CPU Speed VS Heating problem

I had the firmware upgrade on my 2.16 MBP and it has performed very well, the CPU speed cuts back and usually runs at 1333 mHz and the CPU temp runs about 50 to 60 degrees C. Recently it began running at 2167 100% of the time and, of course, the CPU temp is running in the 80 degree C region.
Same apps being used, no new software installed. What gives? I certainly would like to have it return to the older cooler running mode.
Thanks for any assistance or suggestions.

No viable options to date although you may want to keep this in mind. Apple has made changes to the firmware and system management control so that you may safely utilize the performance you paid for. You may not notice it now although when Leopard is released, you may appreciate the maximum performance of your Mac with the current updates, as it is now able to run the more robust and demanding operating system of the future.

  • VIA KM4M-V motherboard CPU speed and AGP problem

Hello. Please be patient I am not technical I would say I'm intermediate, so please if anyone is kind enough to help, please don't blind me with jargon! I have 2 problems I believe are motherboard related, I shall go thru them both. Any solutions/suggestions will be very gratefully received! Operating system is Win XP Pro SP 2 running 512 MB RAM (64 used at moment for onboard graphics)
I purchased this mother board: VIA KM4M-V. I also purchased an AMD Sempron PR2600+ which should be showing a speed of 1833 Mhz, but is coming up as 1466 MHz. Does anybody have any info please? I have downloaded and installed all the latest deivers and BIOS for the motherboard, and the MSI live monitor says there are no new updates now. Is there something in BIOS I need to change? Or is this a mistake on the manufactuers part? If so, which one? LOL
2nd problem: The onboards graphics weren't good enough for some games I had - it required an AGP card. So I have purchased an ATI Radeon 9550 256 MB AGP card. OK I installed this card. All OK starting up. installed drivers, restarted computer. Was OK then changed to 32 bit colour and change the resolution of screen. When I clicked apply went into energy saving mode. Rebooted. As soon as it went to boot into windows, the monitor went into energy saving mode. Once it didn't straight away and windows started then the screen went distorted then it went into energy saving mode. I went into safe mode uninstalled the graphics hardware booted into windows again and reinstalled looked OK then I rebooted and it did it again grrrrrrrrr I went and disabled onboard graphics (ATI said might be issue on their site) still won't boot. Something I am doing wrong? Is it the motherboard?
I'm thinking that it is both botherboard ::koff:: I mean motherboard It's OK I mean it's better than what I had, but I know it's not what it should be! I am grateful to you guys for your help. Thanks very much

More on this! I am running win xp pro sp 2 BTW. I have been swapping between the onboard graphics and the ATI radeon 9550 AGP card I just got. I have been disabling onboard graphics, then installing from scratch (all virus and programs off). As to power supply/amperes? I have no idea all I know is it's a 450 watt rating and has ummmm 230 on back (volts?) it's pretty new I got it like 5 months ago
OK I can get it sort of working when I go into the BIOS and set it from 8x to 4x. The graphics advanced setting was showing 4x. The motherboard is SUPPOSED to support 8x but it just won't work at all in that mode. It works for awhile in 4x mode. No specific amount of time I have current drivers on everything! Then the same old thing happens! Monitor goes to energy saving mode or computer restarts. On restart can use it again for a limited time again, and then the mouse pointer kinda goes funny and it freezes. It goes pixalated and if I move it this 'block' goes up and down in a line only. Most of the time has been trying to start AOL (my ISP)  it goes off then. Have tried different rates (went down to 16 bit) and desktop sizes (went down to the one above 800x600) no go. I took the refresh rates to 60, tried everything. I have taken it out again.
I don't know if it a motherboard problem, the graphics card or a combo! I just paid £54.99 for the graphics card, and don't want to waste it! What should I do. It's really frustrating!

  • CPU Speed discrepancy, BIOS problems

My Win7 PC started showing weird behavior a few days ago. Slow performance in all Windows apps, bootup process was slower, monitor cycled through options trying to find the video channel, (HDMI 1) and failing, DVD Rom drive clicking as if trying to find a disc, and (yesterday) failing to boot at all. I cleared CMOS and loaded Optimized Defaults. When Windows started (much faster than before) several icons were missing from the system tray including firewall, Nvidia manager, and network, although they were apparently working. I rebooted again and performance was great, all seemed fine. AMD Overdrive listed my 965 Quad Core at 3000 MHz, each core speed at roughly the same speed. This morning my PC was slow again. AMD OD showed CPU Target speed at 3000 but with each core at a current speed of only 800 Mhz with NB voltage reading (in red) at 1.40. My next plan of attack is to Unplug-N-Play the OS setting in BIOS, uninstall all overclocking software and try again. Having said that I could use some feedback. Have you heard of any scenario like this before and do you have any guidance for me?  I use MSE for AV, MBAM and both show no infection. My system specs are below. • Instalalation Problem - CPU speed

I am trying to install BAM 10.1.3.1.0 on WinXP Professional OS with 1.7 GHz CPU. But the installer says "CPU at least 1 GHz : Failed" and it stops, though the CPU is 1.7 GHz. (I have installed XE database on the same machine)
Earlier also I was trying to intstall, it was passing all such minimum requirements, though it was failing at some other subsequent point. But now its stopping at the minimum system requirements.
Could anyone please throw some light why its not able to read the CPU speed properly?

    Pls ignore this thread.
There was some problem with my BIOS.
    The prob is solved now

  • K8T Neo-FIS2R V1.0, CPU Speed Problem

    Hi, I got a Athlon64 3500+ (NewCastle) and K8T Neo-FIS2R V1.0 MotherBoard
Just downgrade my bios from 9.2 to 3.3 since the 9.2 bios does not show the correct +3v voltage in the core center and the website is recommending that old version of Athlon should use 3.xx bios.
But the problem occurs, the core center now shows the cpu speed is 1xx rpm and keep sending alarm. I use other software to check the fan speed and it is 2xxx rpm. The temp of the cpu is between 33 to 43 'C.The temp of the case stays at 42 'C. The voltage of the CPU is 1.52-1.53V. One time, somehow the temp of the cpu went up to 50'C but the fan is not turning faster to cool down the CPU. No matter what models (Cool&Quiet or User) I choose in the core center, it just did not go faster. Finally, I have set full speed of the fan in the core center to increase the speed of the fan.
My PSU is Enermax 450W, and I used 5V for my three case fans since they are really noise.
Any problems with my system or computer, or any recommemdation?
Sorry for my English, but I am doing my best.

Everest just has no readings that work for us. They never supported our board. None of the software gets a correct read on our 3.3v so no there is no answer. I have tried them all as have others. If reading the 3.3v is that important to you use a meter.
I have yet to ever trust Core Center. It lies. Keep in mind just how many MSI products it is used in. So far it has yet to be that accurate in any Via Based MSI product. Search the forum here for it. No one seems overjoyed with CC.

  • How to get statistics (or precise data) about cpu speed and RAM

My problem is I want to determine the CPU speed of the computer is running the applet.
I know there's no way to obtain in a simply (and standar) way this property, so I've thinked about generating statistic methods for do it (something like executing a loop a defined iterations)
My doubt is what to put inside this loop, beacuse I would like to know just not CPU speed (or satistics about it), I need also free RAM statistics, so I've thinked there would be some specific java instructions to give a relationship of these data I need.
My question is if someone has done (or has thinked about) this kind of classes before me, and can tell me what is the best way to make the same.

  • Program taking up all of CPU Speed

    Hello,
I have been lucky not to have to use the forum, until now. I recently installed a program called Garage Sale. I decided not to use it and deleted it (drug it over to trash from the finder window). Well,(now at least a week later) I turned on my computer this morning and it was running really really slow. I was finally able to get into the activity monitor and was able to find the problem. A piece of Garage Sale was still running (Garagesalehelper) and it was taking up to 65 - 80% of my CPU Speed. How to do I get rid of this thing? Thanks for any and all help.
    Imac G5 Isight 512MB 180GB HD 10.4.9   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, JoeCat24
To stop the offending process immediately, you can highlight "Garagesalehelper" in the main Activity Monitor window and then click the red "Stop Process" button. However, this fix is only effective until you restart your Mac or the application.
To get permanent relief, you must properly uninstall Garage Sale.. I do not use Garage Sale, so I cannot give you specific, step-by-step instructions. You will need to find the proper uninstall instructions. Some applications come with an uninstaller. Others list all the files that must be removed along with their locations
If you still have the Garage Sale installer or Readme files, check there to see how to properly uninstall. If you do not have this information, you may need to download the installer again to see if uninstall instructions are available there. Sometimes it is simpler to reinstall the application and then use the Help files to find out how to properly uninstall.
If none of those things work, I suggest that you contact the software developer and ask him for instructions on how to uninstall his app.
If this GarageSale is the app causing your problems, the developer offers email support via his "Contact & Support" link.

  • Macbook Pro Core Duo, Normal heat problems???

Hi guys. I have a First Generation Macbook Pro, i bought it like 8 months ago from ebay. The guy that sold me this mac told me that it doesn't have any heat problems at all, but im just, im sorry, i can't say the same right now.
Since i receive, when it turns on, It's ALWAYS 45 (Centigrees), ok, even if i don't start any app, it heats up to 50-55. Well. Then, when im doing normal stuff (Like, You know, using Adium, Firefox, just web browsing and hearing some music with itunes) it heats up to 60-65... The worst come when i use photoshop and Dreamweaver. Gets to 68 to 78, and then i must start using 3rd party Apps for control the Fans of the computer (im using SmcFanControl) moving the fans to 4000 rpm... But the problem get's when im trying to play Starcrat or use any other app that runs with rosseta, Easy can get to 90...
The Macbook Pro never shut down because a heat problem, but im just worried about it, this is normal?, here is the normal Specs of my computer.
    Model Name: MacBook Pro 15"
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Other problem i have, is that the Battery of the macbook pro, when i unplug the power cable it just turn off, without any advice that my battery is getting out of power. Is this normal? The battery have been changed before, like a year ago (again, from the words of my ebay seller)...
There's anything can i do?. I have applecare and i still have coverage until March 2009.

The temperature ranges you report are "normal" and nothing to be concerned about.
Battery: Reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and re-calibrate the Battery every couple of months.

  • MacBook Pro 2GHz heat problems

    Hello!
I just bought a MacBook Pro 15" 2GHz non multi-touch (before 1 week). I was so frustrated for not being able to buy it easy from my country but the pain was worthy I thought. Now after some work with it I notice it is very hot. I downloaded iStatPro I looked at the temperatures.
The processor usually stays at 55 to 60 celsius. When I do normal work it sometimes came up to 80!?!
When I am at my desk browsing I notice that the wood (or other stuff I don't know the english word) of my desk is being deformed because of the temperature.
I tried contacting the services via email but no one answered me in a couple of days.
So I have these questions I like being answered.
What is the normal idle temperature?
What is the normal operating temperature?
Is there a way to fix the problem in service or other way?
And is there a way to notify Apple that the local re-sales are making not a good name for Apple by being incompetent and slow?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are a couple of things that you can check if you are concerned. If the surface of your desk is being deformed by the heat, it sounds to me that your mac is running too hot. I have mine on my lap now, and it is just mildly warm.
Run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test. This is on Install Disc #1 of the gray discs that came with your computer. You hold down "D" to boot to the test--instructions are on the disc and the screen that comes up. This will test several things including the fans and the thermal sensors. If there is anything wrong, you will get an error code, which is indicative of a hardware problem.
The other thing that can happen is that some process will run amok in the background and hog the CPU and generate heat. The way to look for this is to open Activity Monitor, in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder. Set the top box to show "All Processes" and the lower bar on "CPU". Then look at the CPU column and see if you can find some process running that shouldn't be that is using 50% or more of the CPU. If you do, highlight it and quit it. One example of a process that often causes problems is a printer process, but it could be just about anything. If you find such a rogue process, quitting it should bring down the temperature.
Also look at the two boxes showing CPU Usage. Under light use, these boxes should be mostly black. If you see a lot of green or red, something is going on.
Here are the temperatures for my MBP with 5 applications open:
    CPU A 52℃
    GPU Diode 58℃
    GPU Heatsink 51℃
    Heatsink A 52℃
    Heatsink B 41℃
    Enclosure Base 32℃
    Mem Controller 43℃
    Airport Card 53℃
    Left Fan 2000 RPM
    Right Fan 1995 RPM
One more thing to check--is the battery very hot? Mine is warm, but not hot--I can easily hold my hand on it. If yours is very warm, it might have a problem. As it happens, there were a number of defective batteries shipped.
I am not familiar with how to contact Apple in your part of the world. If you are unhappy with the service you are receiving, you could always write Apple at their corporate office:

    Good luck!

  • FireWire Audio Heat Problem (Macbook Pro, Late 2008) VIDEO proof

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYHnX3CGUoo
After a lot of hours of trying to figure out WHY my macbook pro heats up (a lot) when i connect my newly bought Apogee Duet firewire audio interface, i found out that actually what was happening is that there are CPU spikes of extremely short period (so short that Activity Monitor and iStat could not catch) constantly spiking the CPU frequency from 1596Mhz (Idle) to 2572Mhz (Maximum). Apart from the frequency spike there is also a VOLTAGE spike from 1.0v to 1.15.
I know that this is normal due to speedstep technologies and such BUT the rapid spiking and alterations of frequency and voltage ALWAYS happening when i have my Firewire audio plugged is not normal to me. There is nothing else running, everything's idle and i only plug the firewire interface.
Also this is not happening when i restrict OSX from loading AppleFWAudio.kext (either by deleting, moving, renaming it). I connect the firewire audio interface, the leds are illuminating but no heat problem (thats to show you that is not because the interface is self-powered)
Whats going on seems to be similar with the problems occurred after Mac Pro Audio Update to users that was using FW audio devices. They were hearing a sine noise coming from their macpro and propably that was because the same thing was happening. Constant spikes of voltage to the CPU. I dont have a macpro thought so i cant apply the update Apple released for that issue.
Also, my macbook is using Lucent / Agere (LSI) firewire chipset (the particular and known revision 6) but i dont think that this is the cause since Apogee didnt have any problems with the chipset
Info: The app im using to monitor the Frequency and Voltage is CoolBook, can be found here: http://www.coolbook.se/CoolBook.html

Firewire Audio disconnected / or AppleFWAudio.kext unloaded = Idle temp arround 50 celcius (iStat)
Firewire Audio Connected with AppleFWAudio.kext loaded = Idle temp arround 60 celcius (iStat)
If theres a possibility that this is due to bus powered firewire device (cause i have an external FW hard drive that is self-powered and temps are not rising when i connect it) then AppleFWAudio.kext maybe manages something with bus powered firewire.
Maybe when i have the interface connected but the kext not loaded the mA sucked by the interface are too little for causing a temp rise but by the time the kext is loaded and the interface is converting audio the mA required tops up so the temp rise comes from the mA load on the firewire bus and not the cpu itself.
*Even if that's the case, the rapid spikes of throttling on the cpu by the time the Firewire Audio interface is connected bothers me. This isn't something that should normaly happen on an idling machine.*

  • Practical solution for the Heat problem?

    Dear fellow Mac users,
I got my MacBook last friday. Yes, it's very Hot (temperature). I realised that you guys must be facing the same problem. I love this computer. But the heat is too much, i can't put it on my lap to work, when i travel...
Even typing on the keyboard for a long time in the library, i feel the heat coming out from the keyboard! so fustrating..
Are they any practical solution on how to reduce the heat? I dont want to dismantle the machine.
    Thank you very much!
    moses

Thanks for the recommendation of the pad. I guess it
will deplete the battery life quicker.
I am wonder, the heat problem, is it a APPLE's fault?
No, as Guitaristguy313 stated, the heat problem exist in most (or all?) Core Duo laptops, whether they are Apple branded or Sony branded or Dell branded. The MacBook is not running warmer than another Core Duo based laptop.
So it's apparently the normal operating temperature of Core Duo laptops.
That's not too surprising considering that Intel document its Core Duo to be in normal operating temperature if the cores of the CPU don't run higher than 100°C, and 100°C is a very high temperature.
Hopefully MacBooks Core Duo's cores generally don't run higher than 85°C, but while within specs according to Intel, it's still very high so it's not surprising that the notebook shell temperature is high also (according to a test on a website, the shell can reach 50°C when the Macbook is used intensively).
So if you really want to have a culprit for the high temperature of the Macbook (and in fact also other Core Duo notebooks), it would be Intel.

  • Dv6-3123tx - is facing over heating problem?

    Hi All,
I am planning to buy another LPTP
    my main requriment is :  intel  i5  ,  4 GB RAM ,  atlist 2.66GHZ cpu , 15" monitor.
So that I have chk hp following model :  dv6-3123tx its cost is  Rs.50,000/- INR
I have chked some review of  (dv6-3123tx) and some post is saying it is having over heating problem and hp is stoped to supply it in to the market.
can any one will me guide me in this case. or pls suggest some model.
    I m from India
my budget is up to Rs. 50,000/- INR =  $ 1050/- USD
    niranjan

i have bought the dv6-3123tx about 2 months back and i wouldnot recommend it to anyone too.
All i do i browse and sometime not even that. Leaving it on the table switched on make its go hot, so hot that you cant even type on the keyboard. And the sound the fan makes is annoying.
The touchpad is also one big disadvantage. it makes a sound each time you click. So you cannot work unless you have a mouse. Right now its so heated up that i can barely type (mostly on the left hand side of the laptop.
Also i was checking for remedies when I relaised that this laptop 3123 is not even listed in the HP products list:
    http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Nav?h_pagetype=s-001&h_lang=en&h_cc=in&h_product=4247579&h_client=s-s...

    Welcome to the forum!
Your T22 is behaving normally, what you're seeing is SpeedStep in action. This can be disabled in BIOS under power management.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    George
