CPU Temp and CPU Fan Speed

I am having a strange problem . One time I will boot the PC and CPU temp is 43 and CPU fan speed is 1308 rpm in Core Center. I do a restart system and the CPU temp is 32 to 36 and CPU fan speed 3308. Not sure if I should trust Core Center . Bios shows CPU temp 48 and fan speed of 3328. I have been reading here that there are a bunch of threads containing some kind of problem with CPU temp or fan speed. My Bios is 1.4. If anbody can give me some ideas that would be great.

Open CoreCenter on deshtop.  Click where it says CoreCenter.  Click Cool&Quite button. Then Click apply.  This drops the fan speed back into the 1400 range and the temp will rise back to the 40s.

I have my card since a few months and I always thought it was normal, until 2 days ago when a friend came over with his card an we did some tests to compare.
When I play most games my card is at about 70-80c and 70-80% fan speed.
We did a simple burn in test with furmark and after 2 minutes my card was at 84C and 78% fan speed while his was in the 60C range while staying quiet.
Of course his card was fresh out of the box and his case is bigger, so more spacing, but mine has more cooling, especially for the gpu.  Could it be the thermal paste?  I see people having way better results with this card than what I am getting...

Since it is a pretty new card I think it's airflow in your case. I read somewhere here someone gave instructions for replacing thermal paste.
My card is about 6 months old.  It's just that I always thought it was normal, even if I was disappointed with how loud the card was, since I bought this one espcially for the good cooling and low noise that I've read in so many reviews and tests before buying.
However, my friend's card is brand new.  He came at my place so I could build his computer.  My case is a full atx tower, while his case is etax.  But, my cooling was done and redone many times, espcially since my card was loud and hot, I decided to change my cooling (which did not even change 1C).  I clean my case really often and my fans are well arranged to get the best airflow possible, while my friend's case has less fans and are not optimzed (intake-outake...) to have the best airflow.
Maybe the spacing really is for something, but 84C in 2 minutes of furmark with almost 80% fan speed is a lot.

  • Axis 700 - CPU Temp and Sys Fan Control Problems

I have just received an Axis 700 barebones. I ordered a 700 Lite with the fanless processor but I received a system with C7-D 1.5GHz processor and a system fan !. The heatsink looks the same as the Titan 700.
The BIOS and PC Alert report a CPU temp of 64C immediately on start-up rising to 70C at idle and 100C under heavy load. System temp is steady at aound 30C. I've measured the heatsink temp with thermometer and it's about half the value reported by PC Alert.
The system fan in the heatsink is running at full speed but BIOS and PC Alert reports 0 rpm. If I slow the fan almost to a stop with a piece of paper, I do get a fan speed of 1000-2000 rpm.
It feels like a BIOS problem but the MSI website only has a single version, v1.00. My board has version v1.1B4.
Does anybody have a similar experience?

It could be something wrong with the CPU FAN, else if you think that its BIOS issue you can ask MSI here: http://ocss.msi.com.tw/

  • Increased fan noise, CPU temp and random fan rpm bursts when using Leopard

I have a 2.2 Ghz Macbook Pro that I purchased in August 2007. I was running OS X Tiger on my mac till about a week ago when I decided to upgrade to OS X Leopard. Ever since the install, I've been facing numerous problems and issues with the general functionality of the computer. Specifically, the biggest issue relates to increased fan noise and random bursts of increased fan rpm (as monitored using iStat). I did not have any of these issues when using OS X Tiger. Further upgrading to 10.5.1 wasn't helpful either as it did not resolve the issue.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It may be worth running the Apple Hardware Test, just in case you have a sensor going out or something like that. Sometimes and upgrade will cause an underlying problem to make itself known.
Did you do an Upgrade as opposed to an Archive and Install or an Erase and Install? If so, there could be some software problem associated with the issues you are having. I tried an Archive and Install, and had so many issues that I went ahead and did an Erase and Install. I've had no problems since.
    Good luck!

  • Latest upgrade - have you noticed a BIG change in CPU temp and fan activity

I have just installed the latest update which included the Mac OS X Update 10.5.7.
Prior to this, the CPU temperature was averaging 100, fan speed approx 2-3k, no matter what I did. Checking the ACtivity Monitor showed no runaway programmes.
Now CPU temp is 56, fan speed 1k.
The battery pack no longer is hot enough to fry an egg.
    Has anyone experienced such changes?
I wonder if this relates to the very poor battery life/usage associated with these MBP originals?

  • Weired voltage cpu temp and fan speed readings

Built this system last week when i install core center I get no 3.3 v readings. cpu temp plays between 18c to 60c and the fan speed from 800 t0 6000rpm. Check in the bios all voltage readings are fine but cpu temp and fan readins can be way off. Also installed lastest versions of mbm and get the same results. Flashed bios to latest version also. Cool and quiet is not activated. Well sorry to say I solved the problem for good. Contacted MSI support. Only answer I got was Maybe the board was bad. Got it exchanged from the store and got an Asus av8 deluxe rev.2 instead. Everything runs fine. It was my first MSI board and sad to say it gave me a lot of headaches and configeration problems. The new setup ran great on the first try. Don't  think I will buy MSI again in the near future.

  • CPU Temp and Fan Speed

    Hi
According to SMC Fan Control and iStat my CPU is running at 74C currently and often 90C under light load with associated fan speed of 6200 rpm. I have checked activity monitor and very little load on CPU jsut safari and Activity Monitor have any significant usage ( 10% ish). Is this a 'normal' CPU temp and if not are there any ways to check cooling or in crease cooling, ultimately to keep the fan low and noise down, battery life up??
    many thanks

the mobo isnt able to detect the right cpu temperature and cpu fan speed in bios.
    did anyone experienced that problem??
i already updated to the latest bios V1.6 but no change !!
the cpu temp is shown about 6°C/42°F and the fan speed is 0 rpm !!!
but the system temp is shown correctly (21°C/69°F (when i just started the system))

    Hello!
It has been heard of before, yes, but your board is rather new so I don't think it has had an issue yet.
There is normally a sensor on the processor. If it does on your processor I can't say. If there isn't a sensor on the processor, or if it is covered with thermal grease, or otherwise damaged, BIOS and all programs that read BIOS data will be wrong.
Bit off: I'm speculating in that HSF, and I wonder how good and quiet it is. Been recommended by a store nearby.

  • GPU/CPU Temps and Graphics Performance Questions

I am also experiencing some similar oddities with my 15in UMBP. As background on my setup I am running 10.5.7 (the problem began before the update) and I work in an air-conditioned office with a cooling pad for my frequently "toasty" MBP. I have noticed that my temps are significantly higher while running on the NVIDIA 9600M GT vs. the 9400M, and also I use iStat to monitor my system.
Here's the problems. With only Mail, iChat, Safari 4, and iTunes running (87-93% idle) I frequently see temps hit 150-155 F for the GPU 145-150 F for the CPU. While running on the 9400 with the same applications (87-92% idle) I see temps from 90-95 F for both GPU and CPU. When I had first gotten my MBP I used it mostly with Aperture 2 and I thought it was strange that I couldn't tell the difference in performance between the 9600 and the 9400. Later I tried to use it from time to time in Win XP (bootcamp) for gaming, but it would get so hot that i could hardly touch the keyboard and the graphics performance wasn't nearly what i thought it should be. In fact I was only able to run games slightly better than on my company provided Dell Inspiron D620 (old POS). On the Mac side I tried to test out the performance of my GPU by setting the graphics in X-plane just to the point that with the 9600M GT enabled the program wouldn't tell me that I had too many graphics options turned on. After getting that dialed in I switched over to try it with the 9400 and the performance was nearly identical, and maybe even a little better... I'm not a genius when it comes to computers by any means. I don't know very much about what kind of performance I should be seeing from these two cards, but I would think that the 9600 would greatly out perform the 9400.
Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated

I used istat pro to get the temperatures and fan speeds. You can download it free here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
I turned it on a few hours ago and the temperature of one of the cores reached 70 degrees C and the fan speeds all went up to around 3000 rpm. I'm just going to leave it off for now and take it in to get serviced. Only problem is I have to make an appointment and who knows how long it will take to get it in. Hope it works out for you.

  • USB/FireWire usage increases CPU temp and fan speed

    Hi,
I'm curious, does the usage of USB and FireWire ports increase CPU temperature and fan speed...?
I have an M-Audio Fast Track USB interface plugged in and whenever I play any songs from iTunes using that interface as an output, my CPU temp increased and fan speed jumped from 2000 to 3300 rpm. And on separate occasion, an 8GB of file transfer from an external FireWire-based HDD had both fans speed up to 4,400 rpm.
Is this normal...? All these were done with an external display plugged onto the MBP with "clamshell" mode.

USB operations involves quite a bit of CPU action, Elphidieus.
Firewire places less demand on the CPU but, in a situation like the one you describe can involve both increases in power usage and in HD temperatures.
The fan speeds on Macs are not simply responsive to CPU usage. Both HD temps and power usage can also play a part in the equation that ultimately produces the fan speed. As HDs have much lower heat tolerance than CPUs you will find that it is quite common to see the fans ramp up when doing a large file transfer over FW (or USB, for that matter) , especially if the internal HD temp gets to over about 50-55º Celsius.
    Cheers

  • High CPU usage, overheating, and high fan speed on DV4-1125nr

the process igfxsrvc.exe is running in between 30 and 40 of my CPU. my total CPU is about 55% or so while idle. i tried disabling that driver, and it's CPU went down to about 20, but my total CPU was still at the same place, if not a little higher. also, my computor is overheating a lot, and my fan is constantly running on it's highest speed. i do not believe that this is caused by a dirty vent. also, I have checked the version of the graphics driver and the BIOS(both of which i saw the suggestion to update by several people having similar problems) and both are up to date. what is the problem? am i being highjacked/ infested with viruses and i dont know it despite having already ran all my virus protection and anti-malware programs? someone please help before i have to take it to geek squad! thank you in advance!

    Hello,
I decided to sacrifice a little bit of performance for the sake of cool temperatures and silent fan. I have HP DV6, with AMD Turion RM-74 and HD4650.
So, Yes, You will loose up to 15 percent Your CPU power, but heyh, this processor is so fast that You will barelly notice the change. You will still watch HD content with 720p and everything else smoothly. Note, that gaming will be harder part but consider Your laptop not as a device created for heavy gaming.
At one point or another, during games, someday Your notebook inevitably colapse. It's just not meant for gaming, no matter what the specs are...
So, how to reduce Your notebook temps:
    (i) Power Options -> More power options,
(ii) Balanced plan -> Change settings,
    (iii) Change advanced power settings
(iv) Processor power management -> Maximum processor state -> On Battery - 50 percent, Plugged in - 85 percent.
    (vi) Save changes and close.
Now, mine temperatures are - idle 48, heavy load - 57, extremelly heavy load (HD 720p content) - 62-63. (At the moment my CPU cores are at 47 celsius).
CPU still works fast, not so fast as it is working on 100 percent, but hey, fan is silent, and if You want gaming - go to Your desktop pc, leave notebook for lighter tasks, even though the notebooks specs are high,
it simply cannot handle the heat.
    Best regards.

  • Uneven CPU useage and revving fans...according to iStat?

    Hello All,
As with others, I've had the revving fan issues on my G5 for as long as I can remember. The other day, I installed the iStat Pro widget, which tells you information on what's being used in your computer, which fans are going what speed, temperatures, RAM useage, and such. According to iStat, whenever the fans are revving and I check, it's the fan and intake fan on 'CPU A' that's revving up to 1500-3000 rpm, whereas the ones on CPU B stay in the 300-500 range...and in terms of temperatures, CPU A is always at least 10 degrees higher than CPU B in farenhite. Is this unevenness normal in an dual processor G5? Does the second one kick in only when it's needed for heavy computing? Is GPU A being overtaxed, leading to the revving fans? And again, those randomly revving fans only seem to be the ones on CPU A. The drive bay fan seems to hover constantly at around 1000 rpm.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Dual 1.8

Hi. You could try installing Hardware Monitor
    http://www.bresink.com/osx/HardwareMonitor.html
which will give a more comprehensive picture of temps and fan speeds, etc. - and how they vary over time, and according to CPU loading. You can create probes/sensors for processor load and check that everything varies in (fairly) logical unison, at least.
Some fans and temps will be either almost unvarying or show steady progressive change, e.g. Drive Bay Fan; PCI Slot Fan (names may vary slightly in HM on your G5)
Most dual processor G5s will show some variation between processors - there are some, fairly historical, examples here
    http://macosg.com/group/viewtopic.php?t=1314&highlight=temperatures
some of which are greater than 10deg F. If, after observing the readings in HM for a while, you are still concerned, you could run the Apple Hardware Test, explained here
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/aht.html
or, if you still have AppleCare, download TechTool
    https://support.apple.com/techtooldeluxe/main?id=dl
or contact AppleCare, when you have some numbers, and see what they say.
Probably also worth checking that there is no fluff build-up in the cooling fins of the CPU heat-sinks.
No doubt you have tried changing Processor Performance to 'Highest' in System Preferences > Energy Saver > Options to reduce the Random Pointless Revving.
If you note the CPU loads in HM or use the 'Floating CPU Window' in the Window menu in Utilities > Activity Monitor, the algorithm for allocation of CPU load appears to be more sophisticated than it was in some earlier Applications that pushed one task to one specific processor.
Please post again if any of this isn't clear. Good Luck.

  • Question regarding CPU temps and latest bios (1.8)

Hi, just build my first system using an MSI board. The K8N Neo2 Platinum with an A64 3500+ Venice. It came with bios version 1.5 and everything went smooth. Been running stable for a few days now. Cpu temps were anywhere from 38 (idle) to 50-54 under load. Though most of the time they were in the mid 40's. Which are acceptable temps.
Anyway, I just installed the latest bios tonight (1.8) and the reported temps have drooped significantly. Around 27c (idle), which is actually lower than the reported system temp (28c). One of the listed fixes for Bios 1.8 are cpu temps, but can these be correct? They seem very low. Which temps should I believe?
    Thanks

I'd believe the first bios's temps more than the second...
