CPU Temp too hot!!

Are these temperature readings normal?

System Load, GAME, ETC = 48 C
I live in Hawaii by the ocean, but it's not that hot here.  I monitored these temperatures at 4PM during a windy, cloudy day.  My temps don't go below 50C on idle unless it's early in the morning, say 4-6AM when I'm doing papers before school.

Hi "dalnap"
Now I presume you are using the stock intel cooler that came with the P4.
Those temps are too high and I would definately not run your processor at load until we fix it just incase.
Now wot u need to do it reseat your heatsink on your processor.
This means you will have to take off the heatsink and clean it with any heatsink cleaner or isoproppyl alcohol till the old thermal pad or paste is removed
Then put a little bit of thermal paste in between the heatsink and the processor (about the size of a grain of rice) and put the heatsink back on top of the processor.
So if you havent got any you will need to buy some thermal paste, Artic Silver III is meant to be good but if you use that it voids your intel warrenty so buy any other descent thermalpaste.
For reference if you are using stock your CPU temps should be about:
Idle 40C
Load 60C (max)
Hopefully this helps otherwise there are many other experienced users that will help you!
Good Luck

  • CPU temp too hot on macMini(mid2011)

CPU temp up to 82°C, fan blowing hard after half an hour use , even with few apps on.
    Know this issue?
    Thanks for helping

This is a known issue, discussed in many places. I find having my mini stand up on its side lowers the temperature considerably.
If I were you, I would have the cpu monitor on to see what app is using the cpu so much. Usually my mini runs cool except when rendering 3d scenes or compiling program code. Even well implemented games like Portal 2 or Trine don't cause much heat.
But the mini does run hotter than you would like, can't help that really

  • Is it normal that my macbook pro cpu runs too hot?

I downloaded the smcfan control since my laptop was running too hot and I only bought it 3 days ago.
It says that my temperature goes up to 90c sometimes and it is too hot to even touch!!
I am a bit worried, I adjusted the fan settigs to higher rpm and it seems to help a lot, but why is it so the fans are not automatically adjusting when the temperature is so high? Is there something wrong with my laptop - I could still get it replaced with a new one since I just bought it..
    My specs are:
    MacBook pro 15" 2011
    i7 proccessor
    4GB or ram
    Thanks in advance!

194º F / 90c is the typical temperature if your doing a lot of heavy CPU load.
Check your Activity Monitor in your Utilities for any runaway processes.
If you first boot your machine and it gets these sort of tempertures with nothing else running, you very well indeed have a problem.
The average temperture using smcFanControl with default Apple fan speeds should be about 120º F cold boot, at idle/light load (just a simple browser window no video) CPU in a 78º F enviroment.
Iv'e bumped my minimum fan speed to 4000 RPM, and thus my smc reported temperture is about 100ºF for those same conditions.
If you way above these typical conditions (others report about the same) then yes I would uninstall smcFanControl and then take the machine in for a evaluation, you could have a dead fan or sensor, etc.

  • Temps too hot?!

    Hello, everyone!
I just finished buidling my first computer. It has a 2.8 Northwood, and a Zalman flower heatsink CNPS7000A-Cu with Artic Silver 5 Thermal grease. From what I have heard people saying there usual temps are with this setup, I feel that mine are too high (?). I have a Wavemaster case with two 80mm sucking in and one 80mm blowing out, and the cpu fan does about 2800rpm max. After gaming for a few hours temps were about 49 for the cpu and high 30 for the case. right now it is idling about 35 in the case and 45 on the cpu. the ambiet temp is 68 F.  The strangest thing happened after i let it sit a whole night off. In the morning when i tunrned it on, i checked the temperatures immediately in the bios. and the cpu was still 45C!, which is about 110F, 40F warmer than the room! I have the newest version of the bios, and i followed the artic silver and zlaman instructions exactly. is it possible i have damaged one or both of these sensors? I really appreciate any input or suggestions you have, and post questions is i need to clarify anything, i'm new
Notes: I was the most concerned with mounting the heat sink. I put the right amount of grease on, but it did squirm around slightly as i tightened it. Also, The copper fins never seem to warm up...

    Thanks again!

    Bejon2000,
On the Bios ver 3.20 and below the error reading is in -12 v but the temp looks fine, but in ver 3.5 corection has been made on -12v reading and the temp seems the same nothing change.
Bios 3.6 the cpu temp is much lower then the previous bios, this can be read on Speed fan and also in CPUZ the Vcore doesn't change in reading compare with the old bios.
Interesting to note bios 3.5 and below CC will read the lowest CPU  temp in my computer is 49 c although the other software read lower. (it seems stuck on the lowest reading CPU temp). In bios 3.6 the CPU temp read lower and the CPU temp reading is change quickly (abruptly) which I thing not supposed to be in the heat transfer.(The bad thing is happen on speed fan also).
Yes you right about new Mobo is started with Bios 3.30 and not found in the web site, you can see the history of this mobo bios on the zip file of Bios ver.3.6.
Regarding the CPU temp. is better to put a real sensor on your cpu which can be read on the front panel so you can get some reference of this matter in relationship with the software reading. It not expensive and you can get it with casing which have this equipment.
The great thing about this Bios is actually on the DOT performance.
    Hope this will help you.

  • CPU goes too hot!!

    hi guys
    i got a huge problem
my cpu temp most time hits the 73c (well that what said the corecenter) and intel said that my top temp for my cpu is 69c
i download speedfan and it said like 68c
all that it is at full load
i heard that it is recomend that supont dont go over 50c full load
    i have stock cooling

yes, that is very hot.  from the intel specs, the p4 max temp is around 76c, i believe.  from stock cooling, i assume you are running the retail heatsink and fan on the processor.  the retail hs and fan have thermal tape on the bottom of the heatsink.  it is not good to use both the thermal compound and the thermal tape.  its either one or the other.  if you have the retail, it is possible to take off the thermal tape and use a good thermal compund instead.  form experience tho, i will tell you that this is a pain.  it took me a few hours with goo-gone, acetone, and isoproyl to get the heatsink really clean.  in the end, i just went back to a new retail box hs and fan.  im glad i was actually able to come accross a store that was even selling it w/o the processor.  please let us know what you have done in terms of thermal tape vs thermal compund and i think we can help you out more.

  • Tecra 8100 CPU gets too hot

Well, some could remember my previous post about fan activation in my Tecra 8100.
This notebook came to me as a gift by a customer, because screen didn't work. After a bit of research, the problem was the internal cold cathode, that was broken. Once replaced: yup! a free notebook for me!! It was a Pentium III 650 Mobile, with 64MB of RAM and a 12GB hard disk. I replaced all those componentes (that are now for sale, btw) and it now has a Pentium III 850 Mobile, 512MB of RAM and a 40GB hard disk. Some one gave me a PCMCIA 11Mbps WiFi card, and now how it is working, with Windows XP Professional and updated Toshiba utilities and drivers downloaded from Toshiba USA.
What's the buzz? SpeedFan, Motherboard Monitor and other monitoring utilities reports temperatures of up to 72?ºC in the CPU. I opened the notebook and put thermal paste instead of the sticker the heatsink has. Temperature keeps high, and Toshiba Utilities even at "high performance cooling" settings doesn't make the fan cool the cpu...
I have not hangs at all, but notebook case and pcmcia cards get too hot even with the system working with no apps running. Lowering the CPU clock or ratio doesn't help at all.
I'm thinking of putting an extra fan somewhere to force air flow and that way cool the cpu, unless that...
...Toshiba could develop an utility that allows to directly control fan speed. I don't know if thermal management is hardware or software driven. If it's software driven, it should be easy to create a utility that access directly to fan and temperature registers. That would be MUCH better that simply let the computer decide when and how long to activate the fan.
I'm sure that Toshiba engineers are busy with more important things that will not allow them to create the utility for us, so...
...what to check or do to cool down the CPU to more appropiate values?
    Thanks all!

    Hi
Like in you previous posting described the Toshiba power saver controls the CPU and fan usage.
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=12585
This software works great and if you use the notebook as prescribed, you shouldn't get any problems and overheating issues.
The problem is that you have changed all devices and parts on you notebook. The new parts are efficient but produce more warmness.
On the notebook you can cool the CPU with one little fan and if it doesn't last out, it's necessary to decrease the CPU performance.
This is a simple fact. All these functions can be set with power saver.
Furthermore it's very important that your cooling module is clear and no dust and debris handicap the fan working.

  • Cpu temp running hot

i am useing amd 3200+ cpu on msi k7n2gm-v mbbo my temp kept getting hot 47c to 60c vcore 1.55 i try using arctic silver but can't get the temp down or is this okay. also my next ? i have my fsb set to 200mhz it boot up as 1800 ghz is this right.or should i clear the cmos and re do the paste.what the right for a 3200+ please everyone bare with me i am new and not show what to do.
                                                                                     thanks to all

    OK, then:
1 Reseat the processor: Power off and unplug the power cable, open case, take mobo out, take off the heat sink and take the processor out. Clean the bottom of the heat sink and the processor die with strong alcohol and/or aceton, so there is no thermal grease left. When done, add a small drop of Arctic' on the very die - the metallic rectangular of the processor - and put the heat sink on. Make sure the heat sink fits properly, with the 'heel' in the correct end.
2 Please tell us a bit more about your system. Memory and PSU is very interesting, but also heat sink, and more.
PS When clearing CMOS there must be no el. in the system. You have to pull power cable out. and I sugges you push the power button a couple of times to drain the last el. out. But this you knew, I think. DS
PPS There used to be a LED telling you when there were power on the mobo. Wouldn't it be good to put one back?! DDS

  • Is 95C CPU temperature too high?

I have Intel Core 2 Duo iMac. When I use QuickTime or any other video converting software to convert video for my iPhone CPU temperature hits 95C mark. Is it too high? Should I do something about it. If yes what should I do? It is the only situation when CPU temp is so high usually it is not higher then 70C when loaded.

    Hi,
thats normal that the CPU of an mobile system gets hotter, I mean your much more near the CPU then by an desktop. Thats normal that you could think the CPU gets too hot.
I have an Satellite X200 (Gamer machine) and the thing gets really hot, but thats normal since a powerful CPU is in there.
If I were you I wouldnt make any doubt about it and if youre unsure just ask some of your friends which owns a notebook. Usually they would say "yes, mine gets hot, too.."
The 100 degree means that the CPU can become such hot till it reaches 100 degree and then the machine shuts down to prevent to some damage on the CPU.
So in this case the 70 degree are okay. You (can by the way) prevent overheating when you clean your machine regurarely simply by blasting some compressed air gently through the ventilation holes of the CPU cooling system. If not then the cooling modules will be clogged from dust and start to overheat...

  • Another "my temp is too hot" thread

I've done a lot of searching (both google and here) and I believe that I'm running too hot, but since this is my first experience with OCing I want to make sure so I'm posting here.
Anyway, I made a sig with all the info needed (I think), but I'm running at 2.3Ghz with an idle temp of about 49-51C and even with a medium amount of stress it gets up to 58C. From looking around this seems to be too hot. My guess is the thermal paste I used is crappy - no name crap from a local store. But that would only take it down about  5C, or so I've been told.
My fans: One on the base as an intake at 2300RPM, HSF at 3200, and 2500 for the outake located just below the power supply.
I'm running the cpu at 2.0Ghz with an idle temp of 38C, but that is with the case on its side with the panel off; whereas I was running at 2.3 upright under my desk.
Hmmm... what else. Room temp is low, it is well air conditioned.
I think that is all, fire away if you need more detail to help.
    thanks
p.s. link to a review of my HS http://www.ocworkbench.com/2004/scythe/samurai/p1.htm

I mounted a coolermaster aero 7 (suggested by coolg... thank you man) and works fine
idle temp is about 38 and full load is 43-46. and i used to reach about 60 before with my xp 2800+ barton.
anyway i think that a 2500+ not oc and in normal room temperature conditions (shall we say about 20°C) shouldnt be too hot, even with the boxed amd fan+heatsink.
first check if the cpu cooling is well installed.
i've also found (personal experience) that little details may change a lot of things: case fan position, a "tidy" and well ventilated case, round cables...
    take care

  • E6600 - System/CPU temperature - am I too hot ?!

    Hello there,
Another day and another couple of questions ...
    1. I think my system may be too hot (or BIOS misreporting) ... i've had no problems with any software or crashes, it just looks too high in the BIOS (just a hunch)
It's a E6600 Dual Core chip ... and the BIOS says
    Sys Temp: 37c/98f
    CPU Temp: 63c/145f
Now, I have a good, large akasa case, 2x12inch fans ... it's fairly cool in the room too ... (im in the UK! - it's always cool!) ...
There is one thing that it might be ... I had to replace my original mobo with this MSI one (for crossfire!) and I had to take out the processor/heatsink .. when I put it on the new board, I had to use fairly cheap Heat Sych paste which I got from an electronics shop ... I've heard people talking about silver and hi-quality paste ... does the quality of the paste between the chip and the heatsynch make a huge difference ? Could this be my problem ?
Or, is it all basically OK ?
Does anyone recommend a better/alternative temperature checker ?

That's pretty hot.  Even at my OC level my CPU is usually 39C idile and never gets about 49-50C.  Although I'm sure it will run hotter, just not sure how well.

  • Is Satellite L40 CPU too hot?

I have just bought a Satellite L40 with a intel T2370 processor and I have the feeling that its temperature is rather high.
Everest ultimate sensors show a temperature around 70C when operating.
    Is this temperature normal?
Do other users have a similar temperature?
    Thanks.

    Hi
Your notebooks temperature is definitely not too high!
    You should know some important facts;
First of all some 3rd party tools dont provide always the 100% right temperature values!
Secondly the internal temperature changes permanently.
Running some games, videos or other high performance programs would lead to higher heat dissipation and to a higher temperature level
This is a common notebook behavior so dont be worried that something is wrong with your notebook ;)
By the way; the notebook supports an overheating protection; it would shut down automatically if the temperature would be too high.
If the notebook doesnt shut down automatically, your CPU temp is ok.

  • 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7 CPU TEMP 90c Too high?

Hi I have a mac mini (mid 2011)  spec:
Processor  2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6630M 256 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)
    22" + 17" monitors
and my CPU temp is around the 85c to 90c degree. Is this normal? Currently just surfing the net, and i think its making my mouse loss connections sometimes.
    thanks for your help guys,

If you are in fact only surfing web and don't have a myriad
of background apps running, then 85 to 90C is in fact to
    hot.
I have a new Mac Mini Server connected to a Thunderbolt
Display and have been surfing for a couple of hours and
have a CPU temp of 47C and fan at ~2300 RPM.
    (Note: room temp is 21C)
If your Mini is running that hot, the fans should be roaring!
    What is your fan speed?
BTW, the only time I hit temps like that is when I am using
Handbrake to do video conversions, which will max out all
cores available.  The fan gets up to ~4500-4800 RPM.
The only time the Mini should get that hot is if you have
something running that will max out CPU usage.  Check
activity monitor to see if there is some process that is
"running away" and forcing CPU to max out.
If the fan is not working properly, you may need to do
an SMC reset.  If it is not working at all, get it fixed.
So, in conclusion, light CPU usage should not make the
    Mini that hot!

  • New user; CPU too hot...

    Hi y'all,
i just installed Arch onto my Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro V2045 laptop with Pentium M processor. It was fairly easy, although i ran into few problems afterwards (bad locale, wrong /tmp permissions...). Now i've got wifi working and X running smoothly with Xfce on top of it. Yay!
The thing that puzzles me right now is the high CPU temp and fans constantly on, even when the computer is idle. I also have Ubuntu installed and i've got no such problems back there. Is it possible that the ACPI and stuff isn't configured correctly? TIA for any advice.

in Arch few things are configured by default. You have to do it by hand.

  • How hot is too hot for CPU's?

Melting through the bottom of the case like a runaway nuclear reactor is obviously bad...
BUT!  What temperature ranges should be be looking at for standard air cooling with a quality heatsink and fan?  I am running the intel provided retail heatsink and fan atm as the much more expensive unit I bought (the SP-94) wouldnt fit in my case at all.
So!  Currently at idle my CPU temp is 36c, but it is also a little cold in my house.  I have seen temps as high as 55c under load.  Anything I should be concerned about as I am overclocking a bit?  I am running 220x16 so running my 3.2 at 3.52ghz.
    Thanks!

Increasing the FSB provides for better system throughput, but just increasing the multiplier of the cpu does not, therefore, you might want to try decreasing the multiplier when you increase FSB.
The formula is pretty easy. Take the max stable CPU Mhz setting you have, 3600(=225x16), and then divide 3600 by the new FSB value you want to try. The result will be what you should set the CPU multiplier to. Doing this repeatedly will eventually give you the max stable FSB value you can run @ your stock voltages, and then you can try to tweak up your multiplier again. You might have to up both memory and CPU voltages to get past the 3600Mhz total, but only do this one step at a time. You're looking for the MINIMUM voltage increase to achieve stability.
HOWEVER, I don't recommend radical OC'ing to anyone who has only stock cooling, or who has a big heatsink on the CPU only. The whole system needs to be cooled as evenly as possible: CPU, RAM, chipset, motherboard, video card, and should be done BEFORE OC'ing. Otherwise, unless you have deep pockets, you might go broke buying a whole buttload of replacement parts.
