CPU temperature utilities...

I've used three different utilities to check CPU temperatures (Core 2 E6600, the heatsink is Zalman 9700LED):
pcAlert4
Core Temp v0.94
Intel Thermal Analysis Tool (TAT)
The Orthos Stress Prime provided 100% CPU utilization in addition to TAT. All three of the utilities showed different temperatures under the same load; Intel's TAT showed the highest and MSI's pcAlert4 the lowest temperatures. That's fine, although MSI really should get their own stuff right.
I've also noticed during testing that it doesn't make much of a difference, if the Zalman heatsink's fan runs at low, or high RPM; well, other than noise factor. The differences between the low/high RPMs from the temperature's perspective are 2-3 degree Celsius the most for both idle and 100% CPU utilization. That's hardly a reason to run the fan at high speed, especially when the temperature tops out at 55 degree Celsius with 100% CPU utilization for a prolonged time. At idle time the temperature of the CPU is around 32 degree Celsius, depending on which utility is red.
Is this normal for the Core 2 CPU, or neither of the utilities show the actual temperature of the CPU? I'm leaning toward the latter one.

Well, thanks for the warning; I did close the side panel, after I disconnected the heatsink's fan
I don't use JMicron; the four SATA drives are connected to Intel's controller. Additionally, the drives are in a separate compartment from the motherboard with it's own 120mm case fan to cool them.
The CPU temperature without the heatsink fan is 34/32 degree Celsius for core 1 and 2, which is just couple of degrees higher than with the fan running. Maxing out both cores to 100% with two instances of Ortho Beta running raises the temperature to 52 and 50 respectively. Playing GRAW without the heatsink fan running results in around 48 degree Celsius, which also just couple of degree more than the heatsink fan is running.
My initial suspicion of the two 120mm case fans around the heatsink are the reason why it doesn't really matter at what speed the heatsink fan is running at was correct. Yes, the case panels were in place and the three 120mm case fans and the power supply's fan were moving the air evidently rather well.

Nice experiment, which probably would've been better if you close the side panel.
My machine is still running just fine without the heatsink fan; the Zalman 9700LED is pretty darn good, it can keep the CPU at normal temperature without its fan. The Antec P180 case helps a lot, it has great airflow and not even noisy.
Well, this was fun; time to turn on the heatsink fan. I just feel better if it is running...

    Every time a new model Mac comes out, the temperature monitoring utilities have to be updated. Obviously, the insides of the Intel Mac mini is different from the PowerPC Mac mini. The folks who write those kinds of tools can't see into the future and write a utility that will work on computers that haven't been released yet. Just give them a little while to catch up!

    I'd like to ask how can I get a cpu temperature reading within Windows XP.
    I've tried some utilities like MotherBoard Monitor and MobileMeter but they show nothing. In MobileMeter I get only the cpu Frequency and HDD temp.
    Any ideas?

    after some thinking and observing I found out that the temperature cpucool reads is HDD temperature.. NOT cpu temperature..
    it seems there is no sensor for CPU..
    PC Wizard 2005 confirms that sensor readout is HDD sensor..

  • Abnormal CPU Temperature!?!

    Hi all,
    Recently built a new system based on the specs shown in my signature.  Everthing seems to be installed correctly and when I was in BIOS, the CPU temperature was sitting at about 52 degrees C while system temperature wasn't much over 30.  After installing Windows, I installed some of the MSI utilities on the CD that came with the motherboard, including PC Alert 4.  I also installed my Graphics Card drivers and restarted my pc.  After the restart, PC Alert popped up and I had hardly had a chance to watch the pretty fan animation spinning when I noticed the CPU temp was on 68 degrees C and then suddenly jumped to over 100!!  The next second a dialog box popped up saying there was abnormal cpu temperature and that the pc would shut down.  I left it overnight and then retried in the morning... The exact same thing happened... as soon as Windows had started up.  Obviously I shut down at once, but am baffled as to why this is happening.  I haven't had a chance yet to recheck the BIOS temperature readings, but I'm pretty sure that they will reflect a more normal temperature.
    Any ideas as to what could be wrong?  Is PC Alert 4 compatible with the MSI 975X Platinum PowerUp Edition motherboard?  Could my PSU be too small (even though all the fans appeared to be spinning when trying the above)?  Might it be an actual airflow/temperature issue, or could PC Alert be wrong?  Any help would greatly be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

  • Weird CPU temperature problem

    Hi everyone.
    The first time I run my system in the morning,  I'm having high CPU temp readings by Core Center: 71 C, at around 40% CPU usage, running Norton Antivirus '05, and 67 at iddle. In the same conditions, Motherboard Monitor 5 reads: 67 C for N. Antivirus and 63 C at iddle.
    So, I restart computer and check BIOS's PCHealth Status. It reads 46 C for CPU temp.
    Then I get back to Windows XP (SP2), Core Center reads CPU temp while running N. Antivirus as 53 C, and MBM reads 50 C at 40%-80% CPU usage. At iddle, Core Center reads 49 C, and MBM5 reads 45 C.
    Environment temp is about 30 C.
    What do you guys think is happening? Do I need to worry about it or not?

    I was having the same problem as described by the forum user.  Despite my laziness, I even unhooked my CPU fan clean the fan and the CPU and put it back together with Arctic silver.  This helped the idle temperature at START up from 50 degree C down to 43 degree C reading from Core Center.  However, eventually the CPU temp will creep back up to 47 to 50 degrees C.
    My breakthrough came when I read one of the thread which said to uninstalled Core Center, once I done that, my CPU temperature at Cold Start and Warm Start seemed to be consistent at around 36 to 40 degree C (I used SpeedFan 4.18 to verify my temp readings I even crossed check the temp reading with SisSandra 2005 and the two readings are consistent).  
    I then installed CoreCEnter 1.7.1.0 back and during cold start the temperature will creep back up and keep on increasing.  Once I do a warm start everything is back to normal again.  So after cold start I open both SpeedFan and CoreCenter side by side and I notice the following:
    During cold start, CoreCenter never starts the CPU fan at max RPM, it starts around 2200 RPM or so.   Then it would start loading the CPU varying from 1 to 4 to 100% (this happens intermittently so you won't see it if you are not staring at the screen), which would increase the CPU temperature (this is observed in the SpeedFan monitoring screen).    Then it would lower the CPU fan back to 1850 RPM or so and does not increase the fan speed even when temperature goes back up.  The problem does not seem to exist when one does a warm start then CoreCenter lets the fan stays at maximum speed and the temperature is stable.
    I noticed when I downloaded the new CoreCenter version 1.7.1.0 software from the MSI web site, it said "fixing fan speed never reach maximum problem", so I believe this is a CoreCenter software bug.  BTW, I just went back to the MSI tech support web site; it no longer showed this message.  I have a feeling that they removed the message from potential liability with high temperature issue that might have led to many MB returns.  (I know this is sounding awfully like a conspiracy theory)  
    This is my conclusion:
    (1) CPU temp reading from core center is accurate minus about 3 to 4 degree C cross checked again other utilities.  (If you system reaches 60 to 70, I should still be alarmed, do not just let the system idle, because it could be an actual reading minus 3 to 4 degrees).
    (2) CoreCenter never let the fan reaches maximum speed during cold start and will load the system gradually therefore increase CPU temperature even more.
    (3) After warm start, Core Center goes to normal and let the CPU fan goes back to maximum speed.
    I know this is not a very scientific observation, nevertheless it is reproducible on my system.  Please note that I have a Neo Pla set up not Neo Pla 2 therefore results might be different if you have a Neo Pla2 set up.  I really doubt that would be the case since CoreCenter only has one version for both motherboards.
    Please give this a try and see what you find, I am curiously to see what other gets.  If we can all produce the same issue, perhaps MSI will come out with an updated version of CoreCenter again.

  • CPU Temperature of 15" MBP

    When I run football manager, or iPlayer desktop, my MBP constantly runs with a CPU temperature of more than 100C.
    The genius bar have said that the operating temperature is 25-85... and yet tell me that this is too high. Is anyone else having this problem?
    Knowing someone whose MBP actually caught fire has made me reluctant to believe Apple when they say this isn't an issue!
    Also, has anyone with a MBP bought in Sept 07 (ish) also been through 3 batteries due to them being "bad" according to an Apple test rather than "consumed"?

    Welcome!
    The general temp numbers posted here by experts more knowledgeable than I point to ~100°C (±5° or so depending on MBP variant) as being the point where the MBP does a safety shutdown to prevent heat damage to the CPU. Fire is not the issue; the kindling point of the internal components is far higher than the boiling point of water.
    There are several things you can do to mitigate heat issues:
    1) See if any background processes are eating up CPU cycles. Quit all running user applications so the computer is at normal idle. Find Activity Monitor in Applications > Utilities and launch it. If you've not run it before, change the "Show" pulldown at the top of the AM window from its default of "User Processes" to "All Processes." There is a column for "%CPU." Click that column header to sort by CPU usage.
    If any process is using more than about 25 percent of the CPU cycles while the computer is idling, post the names of the processes and we can see if they can be eliminated.
    2) Make certain your physical arrangement of the computer and your usage patterns are not contributing to overheating. Apple recommends against using the MBP on your lap or any surface that contacts the case bottom. The case bottom is part of the heat dissipation system and needs need air. If you need to use the computer in your lap, make a simple lap board from scrap plywood. The height of the rubber feet is usually enough to let the air move but, if you are playing graphics-intensive games, you may want to insert some 1/2-inch (13mm) spacers.
    The main exhaust vent is under the display hinge on the back panel of the case. It must not be obstructed.

    3) Run Apple Hardware Test (AHT) on your install/restore disk that came with the computer. This can see if a fan or temp sensor is not working. If you get an error code, post it here and someone can translate it.
    As for the battery on a late 2007 MBP, I'm on my second. Mine started throwing out highly variable "remaining capacity" numbers at about 11 months and ~25 cycles. It turned out the battery was starting to leak and it was judged "defective" and replaced under warranty. Inspect the edges of the battery at the seam that join the cover to the case. I found a spot that looked like grey-blue papier maché stuck to the seam. It was the goop from inside the battery.

  • K9N Platinum - Wrong CPU Temperature in BIOS

    Hi, I have a K9N Platinum (7250-020) with the latest 1.3 BIOS and an AMD X2 3800+. The CPU Temperature in the BIOS has a negative sign in front of it, and it seems to always report -48*C. I tried the latest nVidia nTune and it was reporting the CPU temperature to be 208*C, which is absolutely impossible...
    Does anyone have the same problem? I searched around and it seems I'm not the only one, but I still cannot understand if it affects only some K9N Platinums or all...

    I've checked with both and software is a little out from what a multimeter state's. Only check with a multimeter if your happy to do so. http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?t=137886 offer good advise if using a multimeter .....
    The only issue I see is the AUX connector for 3.3v with ATX2.0 spec (Modular cables etc)

    I have a Dell Precision M6400 17" laptop. It runs really well on Arch, but is a bit noisy. It has always been noisy, btw, but I recently noticed that the CPU fan was blowing a lot of air even though the CPU temperature is lower than 70°C. I also have a macbook air, and its CPU runs at 70°C all the time, which seems to be normal. I would like my m6400 to behave similarly, and I'm sure someone here know how to change that

    When I start the laptop, its CPU fan stays at its minimal speed only for 1 or 2 minutes, then increases its rotation speed to a second level. It reaches it maximal speed only under heavy load, when the CPU reaches >80-95°C. I would rather let the CPU run a bit hotter before the fan starts to blow: let's say the fan could enter its intermediary speed between 70°C and 85°C instead of 55-80°C, and blow at is its maximum speed beyond that.
    I checked the Fan Speed Control wiki page, but lm-sensors is not able to show me the status of the fans. Any idea ?

    PS: the temperature of the GPU is not reported by sensors, and nvidia-settings reports around 60°C. Its dedicated fan is very quiet.

    I'm in the same situation from at least 1 month ( INTEL CORE 2 EXTREME X9100, 3.06GHz with 8GB ram, one solid state disk 128 GB, and one sata disk 500GB)
    My dell M6400 has dual boot: ubuntu and windows7. The fan works a lot and continuosly in both environment and this is the reason because I have doubt that the origin of the problem is in hardware problem?

    I'm using macbook pro retina 13inch 2013 late version.
    my macbook has NO external graphic card, just iris graphic.
    when i was playing diablo3 or watching movie by using bypass ip address, my cpu temperature was maintained 90~100 celcius degrees.
    And at the same time, my cooling fan was maintained 5800~6000 rpm.
    There are two questions.
    One, is my macbook temperature too high or normal level ?
    Two, i know that 6200rpm is maximum speed of cooling fan. Why  did fan run 5800~6000rpm, not maximum?

  • CPU temperature is too high in Solaris 10 sun fire v890 machine

    Hi,
    I just installed Solaris 10 on a sun fire v890 machine. I used the prtdiag -v command to check the system.
    However, It appears to me that the CPU temperatures is higher than the temperature range specified in the technical specification. The server is a standalone node that does not connect to the network or process anything.
    Is it a problem? Thank you.

  • Satellite M100 - I can't analyse the CPU temperature

    I'm an owner of Toshiba Satellite M100 series (Core Duo T2300, X1400, etc.). The problem is that I can't analyse the CPU temperature changes in such popular application like Everest or Notebook Hardware Control. Also any other software provided by Toshiba and already installed on my HDD doesn't include some CPU diagnostics including the temperature changes!
    The only software which seems to be working is the HWiNFO32 so there is some thermal sensor inside which reads this temperature of Centrino Duo processor, but this software is not very user-friendly :(
    There is a request for Toshiba to do something with this... I've upgraded BIOS in my model to a version 1.70 but it didn't change anything I could easily notice (or is there any?) :(

    Like Mike said the BIOS update has nothing to do with the CPU temperature monitoring.
    The fact is that Toshiba doesnt support any 3rd party applications.
    However, all the temperature programs are not precise and dont get exactly information about the temperature. Only the programs with a physical temperature sensor will give you a exactly temperature.
    I dont understand why its so important for you to know the temperature. The Toshiba notebooks support an overheating protection and if the temperature increases to the critical level so the unit shuts down automatically.

  • Why the CPU temperature is so high?

    My NB Model #MB466, the CPU temperature is 40-50C under normal running and the fan is 2000rpm (I use iStat). When the CPU usage is about 80%, the temperature goes up to 70 or 80C, I can feel it, especially the bottom area of the screen, and the fan goes up to 4000rpm.
    Is this normal?

    My new Aluminum MacBook can get pretty hot when I play Spore or use an iTunes visualizer. The hottest I've seen (according to iStat Menus) is 194 degrees fahrenheit and 5637 rpm. I think they won't go too much farther. If something meets the system requirements, it should be fine.

  • Mac Pro 8-core X5365 CPU temperature

    I've got an 8-core Mac Pro which is crunching SETI@home 24/7, with Hardware Monitor monitoring the CPU temperatures and other vital stats. After reading the Intel Quad-Core Xeon Proc datasheet, I'm a little edgy about the operating temperature of these X5365 CPUs, currently registering at 65 - 70ºC on load for each temperature diode, and fail-safe temperature set to 73ºC to disable SETI@home via Hardware Monitor. I also have smcFanControl speeding up the fans because my ambient temperature varies thanks to myself being in a tropical region, my ambient temperature can reach 33ºC at times, but down to 28ºC when air-conditioned.
    My question is, what is the maximum temperature for these CPUs before they run into the risk of being fried/permanently damaged..?
    Inputs from the Mac Pro-DC/grid community are also welcomed here.

    my 8-core is running seti 24/7 since may without any problem, although my ambient temps dont rise above 30 degrees centigrade...and that's using the optimised apps which make the processor run hotter
    the fans on the machine run 600-2000 rpm all day and all night, i dont expect it to lessen the life of the machine whatsoever. it should be capable of running flat out all its life, that is, after all why we spend so much on these machines in the first place !
    if you only use 4 cores perhaps you should buy a 4-core mac ? he heh just joking...
    as mentioned earlier, when things get really too hot the OS will shut the system down, and if that doesnt happen then the cpus themselves will shut down...
    the heatsinks and fans on these machines are fully capable of coping if your macine is running withing the specified ambient temp range which for the mac pro is 10° to 35° if your seeing ambient over 35 then smc fan control is probably a good idea otherwise it should be fine

  • CPU temperature under Bootcamp with Windows 7

    Hello,
    In Windows 7 on Bootcamp (version 4.0), while watching youtube/flash or installing software (e.g. Adobe Acrobat updates), the CPU temperature on my new MBA (MacBookAir4,2 (13") - 1.7/4/256GB) goes pretty high, but ironically the fan speed does not increase to take care of that.
    Attached is a screenshot I took using speccy, where we see that the CPU temperature is 94 C, but the fan speed is only 2001 RPM.
    However, when I run OS X (Lion), the fan behaves normally and speeds up as necessary to accommodate the increase in CPU temperature.
    Has anyone else experienced something like this while using Windows 7 under Bootcamp? And does this behavior seem normal?

    when you first run it immediately decrease the max fan speed to less than 3000. it's default value is crazy 6000 rpm.

    I just want to ask a question about "standard" CPU temperatures because my laptop (a Dell Vostro 3700) is permanently hot with the fans on even when I am not doing anything special.
    I have CPU freq scaling active with the conservative governor, and I use Gnome Shell 3.2 with an nVidia using the nouveau driver.
    Here are "stable" temperatures while writing this post:
