CPU Time in Load Profile of STATSPACK

All,
I need a clarification on how CPU time is calculated...I have done few R&D,but i didn't get clear u'standing, but in SPDOC.txt(%ORACLE_HOME%\rdbms\admin\spdoc.txt ) as explained in below text:
===========================================================
Additionally, instead of the percentage calculation being the % Total
Wait Time (which is time for each wait event divided by the total wait
time), the percentage calculation is now the % Total Call Time.
Call Time is the total time spent in database calls (i.e. the total
non-idle time spent within the database either on the CPU, or actively
waiting).
We compute 'Call Time' by adding the time spent on the CPU ('CPU used by
this session' statistic) to the time used by all non-idle wait events.
i.e.
total call time = total CPU time + total wait time for non-idle events
The % Total Call Time shown in the 'Top 5' heading on the summary page
of the report, is the time for each timed event divided by the total call
time (i.e. non-idle time).
i.e.
previously the calculation was:
time for each wait event / total wait time for all events
now the calculation is:
time for each timed event / total call time
MY STATSPACK REPORT:

log file sync 43,220 334 6.53
log file parallel write 86,222 246 4.81
What is "total wait time for non-idle events" in the above definition...
I have good idea on interpreting the Report at basic level...
Please DONOT treat this as assignment or stuff like that...
Any help, would be great...
Regards,
~ORA

The time that you see in this report is a cumulative time for all the sessions that were running on this database, during the snap period.
What is "total wait time for non-idle events" in the above definition...As you know, not all wait events are idle in nature. F.ex. SQL*Net message from client wait event is idle event (to certain extent) but db file sequential read is not (as CPU needs to generate the address and perform other computation. All such events, where the CPU processing is still needed but is not directly servicing the end user request, contribute to the total time for non-idle events.

Hi,
I am using oracle 9.2.0.8 RAC on SUN solaris platform.I am trying to understand my DB statistics using the below statspack report. Can you please coment on the below report
My quetions/thoughts are:
1) CPU time is in the top timed events,Is that eman some need to do with CPU increase. Was CPU bottleneck?
2) Parse CPU to Parse Elapsd %: 80.28 .Is this means I am hard parsing most of the time. How can identify which queries doing more hard parses.what is mean by% Non-Parse CPU: 98.76
3) Memory Usage %: 96.25 96.64.It seems to be there is too much memory usage. Can you elaborate this usage about what could be the reasons for this to happen
4) global cache cr request is coming in the top wait evetns and top timed events. Is there some issue with RAC?
5) can you please explain about 5 CR Blocks Served (RAC) and 5 CU Blocks Served (RAC) and Top 5 ITL Waits per

This statspack taken for 30 minutes interval. We have 16 CPU's.We never got ORA-4031 errors. It means you have 16 * 30 * 60 = 28,800 seconds CPU available during the interval but you only used 10,406. So you don't have a CPU problem.
For Statspack documentation, you can have a look to <ORACLE_HOME>/rdbms/admin/spdoc.txt, Metalink note 228913.1, Jonathan Lewis Scratchpad, books commended by Rajesh Kumar Yogi and also to http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/performance/index.html

Hi
It's the total (on 9iR2 at least). You can calculate the per-execution pretty easily if you need to.

Hi,
it seems that your database experiences a high SQL workload. The section of statspack report called "Top SQLs by Buffer Gets" might give you an idea what SQLs caused this CPU workload.

• Urgt:How to identify TOP 5 SQL using more CPU time without using statspack

How to identify the TOP 5 SQL queries which are consuming more CPU time during the timespan of 24 hours for entire database. There are N number of users who have issued sql queries, out of which few users have disconnected and few user are still connected to the database(I need to consider all sessions). My database version is 9.0.1. I don't want to use statspack. Is there any way to identify TOP 5 SQL consuming more CPU time without affecting the performance of the database. Can any one help me on this? Its urgent!!. I don't want to use statspack becasue it degrades the performance and i cannot afford to run it for 24 hours.

You don't run statspack for 24 hours, that would infact be pointless...
Run statspack for say a 10 or 15 minute window during a particular "busy" period on your database. If you run it for longer then all the useful data will have been "averaged out". You want a snapshot in time, not an average over the day.

• Statspackの「CPU time」と「DB CPU」の違い

お世話になっております。
Statspackを取得し調査しているのですが、
下記の二つ項目のtime(s)がまったく一致しません。(桁が異なるほど)
①「Top 5 Timed Events」の「CPU time」
②「Time Model System Stats,SQL ordered by CPU」等の「DB CPU」
この二つの項目はSQLに使用したCPU時間だと考えていました。
定義の違いをご存知の方がいらっしゃいましたら、教えていただけないでしょうか。
以上、宜しくお願い致します。

• CPU Time Wait Event

I am running perfstat in Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.4.0. When I create a perfstat report using the standard scripts I see a wait event called "CPU time." I don't understand what this means. The OEM server monitoring tool does not indicate that the CPU is being used more than 50%, often more like 20%. The top 5 wait events is below.
What does "CPU time" time mean?

From my observation I found that it seems CPU is bottneck on this Server. I have gathered few SQLs to find out whether any scope for tuning but still I believe that by reducing the cache size also I can divide the load or can say transfer the load from CPU to I/O. Am I correct or do I need to look over else ?
Thanks

• Performance Degradated Possibly due to CPU Time

Hi Gurus,
There is a utility in our application with which we can upload an excel sheet containing data and schedule the timing of the job, now when the job is executed, each row in the excel sheet leads to dml operations on multiple tables finally leading to generation of a transaction no. Now at the start around 100-120 transaction nos were generated which goes down drastically to around 30-35 after 6-7 hours. AWR report at the two instances shows that CPU time has decreased considerably in the 2nd case.
I would like you experts to check the awr reports and suggest me the probable reason for the decrease in performance.

Hi CKPT,
Thanks for your reply.
The main finding that I have got from addm report (in both the cases i.e when performance was good initially vis a vis when performance deteriorated is the same -
FINDING 1: 100% impact (3234 seconds)
Significant virtual memory paging was detected on the host operating system.
RECOMMENDATION 1: Host Configuration, 100% benefit (3234 seconds)
ACTION: Host operating system was experiencing significant paging but no
particular root cause could be detected. Investigate processes that
do not belong to this instance running on the host that are consuming
significant amount of virtual memory. Also consider adding more
physical memory to the host.
I still am unable to find out the reasons ... pls help.
Thanks

• Uncorrelated GC STW pauses in ParNew + sys cpu time spikes from jvm calls

Hi, JVM experts.
GC is not an easy subject to grab all its subtleties, so I'm looking for some advice with my situation where to dig further.
The overall picture:
1) Linux smp (2.6.5) x86_64 host with 8G memory, 2x2Ghz xeon (HT) CPUs
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 1.6.0_02-b05, mixed mode)
2) Heap: -Xms4500M -Xmx4500M -XX:MaxNewSize=128m -XX:NewSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=128m -XX:PermSize=128m
3) GC: -XX:+UseParNewGC -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:MaxTenuringThreshold=0 -XX:SurvivorRatio=128 -XX:CMSInitiatingOccupancyFraction=60 -XX:+UseCMSInitiatingOccupancyOnly -XX:+CMSParallelRemarkEnabled -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:+PrintGCApplicationStoppedTime -XX:+PrintClassHistogram
4) Application is running under consistent traffic for two weeks.
5) I monitor the system with "sar"
6) Once or twice a week I observe the kernel-space cpu usage spike to ~90% for a duration <10 seconds.
7) I detect the cpu spike and dump a snapshot of the system situation. It's the JVM which consumes the syscpu time. JVM is sent SIGQUIT at the same instant.
There are two points, I'm rather vague about.
1) All cpu load situations have the following similar pattern in GC log file:

The "delay" of the SIGQUIT/Histogram dump can be ~1-2 seconds from the CPU overload detection. I'm curious about the "suspeciously spurious" SWT preceding the cpu spike. What could be the possible reasons?
2) Per thread analysis of the JVM threads hinted me to one thread which sometimes monopolized ~60% of the cpu time in kernel space. This is the native posix thread which "calls back into" JVM on certain events. Could it somehow cause the aforementioned STW?
My attempts to get a gdb stack dump at cpu load event failed (gdb can't resolve the stack in some of the jvm threads and enters infinite loop)
Any advice is greatly appreciated

Just to close my "ticket" with some findings on the way hopefully to be useful for somebody else.
Since the problem manifested itself only on Linux box (have tried two different enterprise production kernels 2.6), I couldn't use dtrace, so my choice was limited to systap and /proc/profile.
The pattern when cpu usage was spiking was the following:
15 get_stack 0.1042
31 unhandled_signal 0.6458
34 stub_rt_sigreturn 0.2297
49 copy_siginfo_to_user 0.1021
70 find_vma 0.6250
94 retint_signal 0.7705
100 do_sigaltstack 0.2604
138 is_prefetch 0.3920
211 __up_read 1.1989
252 system_call 1.9535
292 __down_read 1.9730
552 save_i387 2.8750
1501 do_page_fault 0.9381
2266 do_signal 1.3488
2427 get_signal_to_deliver 1.9700
2452 force_sig_info 11.7885
3715 sys_rt_sigreturn 5.1597
14260 total 0.0057
It has been always the extensive number of signals generated. systap is lacking dtace java probes (as well as any u-level probes for that matter), so I could tap only in the kernel on syscalls:
force_sig_info= 10209 – 10230
0xc043681b : force_sig_info+0x1/0x86
0xc04230d3 : force_sig_info_fault+0x24/0x28
0xc0404670 : sys_rt_sigreturn+0x0/0xff
0xc061e3d8 : kprobe_exceptions_notify+0x164/0x386
0xc061f043 : notifier_call_chain+0x2a/0x47
0xc061f07e : atomic_notifier_call_chain+0x17/0x1a
0xc061f011 : do_page_fault+0x5e7/0x5ef
0xc0400000 : startup_32+0x0/0xb4
sys_rt_sigreturn= 10209 – 10235
0xc0404671 : sys_rt_sigreturn+0x1/0xff
0xc040518a : syscall_call+0x7/0xb
0xc0400000 : startup_32+0x0/0xb4
sys_rt_sigreturn() is tricky (it is designed to return to the kernel from the u-space signal handler), but the force_sig_info() is the result of the do_page_fault(). The swap was disabled and I assumed that page faults were "minor"-s. Looking at the comments in the OpenJDK JVM sources I could see that there are cases for non-mapped regions singal handling (like dynamic stack growth), so I suspected it's something very JVM specific. I could not correlate it precisely to GC events.
The end of the story is that I didn't find out exactly what was the real trigger of this event, but JVM1.6.05 does not produce such CPU spilkes.

• Query taking time to load

Hi:
We are using a common component for generating query screens wherein we just have to pass a query number to the component which in turn return a list view of records.
We have a particular Query which when executed through Toad or any SQL tool returns records within 4-5 seconds but the same one takes almost 3 minutes to load from Front End.
What could be the possible reason for the page to take so much time to load.
We are using WebSphere 6.0.2.17 server. Is there any settings to be done for statement cache size or for any connection timeout or is there anything to be done at Oracle side.
Since the moment we change the query number to some simple query like select * from dual kind the screen loads instantly.
P.S: The query takes almost 4-5 seconds to execute in backend through TOAD.
Avadhoot Sawant

So 45 or 47? Nevertheless ...
This is hardly a heavy calculation, the savings will be dismal. Also anything numeric is very easy on CPU in general.
But
convert( numeric(8,5), (convert( numeric,T3.COl7) / 1000000))
is not optimal.
CONVERT( NUMERIC(8,5),300 / 1000000.00000 )
Is
Now it boils to how to make load faster: do it in parallel. Find how many sockets the machine have and split the table into as many chunks. Also profile to find out where it spends most of the time. I saw sometimes the network is not letting me thru so you
may want to play with buffers, and packet sizes, for example if OLEDB used increase the packet size two times see if works faster, then x2 more and so forth.
To help you further you need to tell more e.g. what is this source, destination, how you configured the load.
Please understand that there is no Silver Bullet anywhere, or a blanket solution, and you need to tell me your desired load time. E.g. if you tell me it needs to load in 5 min I will give your ask a pass.

Everything on my system looks like it is running in a slideshow at 3 or 4 frames per second. Pretty much everything is being software-rendered, I guess. I know that my ATi card cannot accelerate OpenGL untill kernel 2.6.32 comes out (at least not out-of-the-box) but I *know* it is capable of EXA, Xv, and Xrender. On both my Ubuntu 9.04 install and my previous Arch install, Xorg stayed at ~5% CPU usage. I'd kindly like some assistance in why nothing is being accelerated.
Thanks.

• SSRS Reports taking long time to load

Hello,
Problem : SSRS Reports taking long time to load
My System environment : Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and SQL Server 2008 R2
Production Environment : Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and SQL Server 2008 R2
I have created a Parameterized report (6 parameters), it will fetch data from 1 table. table has 1 year and 6 months data, I am selecting parameters for only 1 month (about 2500 records). It is taking almost 2 minutes and 30 seconds
to load the report.
This report running efficiently in my system (report load takes only 5 to 6 seconds) but in
production it is taking 2 minutes 30 seconds.
I have checked the Execution log from production so I found the timing for
Data retrieval (approx~) Processing (approx~) Rendering (approx~)
10 second 15 sec
2 mins and 5 sec.
But Confusing point is that , if I run the same report at different time overall output time is same (approx) 2 min 30 sec but
Data retrieval (approx~) Processing (approx~) Rendering (approx~)
more than 1 min 15 sec
more than 1 min
so 1 question why timings are different ?
My doubts are
1) If query(procedure to retrieve the data) is the problem then it should take more time always,
2) If Report structure is problem then rendering will also take same time (long time)
for this (2nd point) I checked on blog that Rendering depends on environment structure e.g. Network bandwidth, RAM, CPU Usage , Number of users accessing same report at a time.
So I did testing of report when no other user working on any report But failed (same result output is 2 min 30 sec)
From network team I got the result is that there is no issue or overload in CPU usage or RAM also No issue in Network bandwidth.
Production Database Server and Report server are different (but in same network).
I checked that database server the SQL Server is using almost Full RAM (23 GB out of 24 GB)
I tried to allocate the memory to less amount up to 2GB (Trial solution I got from Blogs) but this on also failed.
one hint I got from colleague that , change the allocated memory setting from static memory to dynamic to SQL Server
(I guess above point is the same) I could not find that option Static and Dynamic memory setting.
I did below steps
Connected to SQL Server Instance
Right click on Instance go to properties, Go to Memory Tab
I found three options 1) Server Memory 2) Other memory 3) Section for "Configured values and Running values"
Then I tried to reduce Maximum Server memory up to 2 GB (As mentioned above)
All trials failed, this issue I could not find the roots for this issue.
Can anyone please help (it's bit urgent).

Hi UdayKGR,
According to your description, your report takes too long to load on your production environment. Right?
In this scenario, since the report runs quickly in developing environment, we initially think it supposed to be the issue on data retrieval. However, based on the information in execution log, it takes longest time on rendering part. So we suggest you optimize
the report itself to reduce the time for rendering. Please refer to the link below:
My report takes too long to render
Here is another article about overall performance optimization for Reporting Services:

If you have any question, please feel free to ask.

• Desktop is taking too time to load icons, start menu, taskbar etc

Lot of users facing this issue, it is taking too much time to load their desktop items. it takes near to 10-15 minutes.
Can someone please let me know which type of changes are responsible for this?

Hi,
This is cause by these Possible reasons:
More Startup programs.
Any startup antivirus scan.
User profile corruption
ShellIconCache file may be corrupted
