Cpu upgrade and open firmware

I have upgraded the cpu's in my system and OpenFirmware does not correctly identify the new cpu's. Can anyone here guide me in how I can change the open firmware to properly recognize the new cpu's?

he system categorizes the MPC-7448 as a 60? which lists it in the IORegister as a G3.
The same is said for the 7447 processor upgrades.
My 7447A shows as a 60?.
The 7447 is a Powerbook processor, and the 7448 is an update of the 7447A processor.
What I want to know is whether the source code of the Open Firmware is available to add the MPC-7448 to the list of recognizable G4 models?
A hint may be found by examining the Powerbook Open Firmware.

  • Mavericks upgrade and Thunderbolt firmware update?

    Hi Guys,
last week I installed mavericks to an external hard drive and am currently using my early 2011 MBP as a dual boot using Lion and Mavericks. The main reason is because my audio software is no longer being updated in Lion.
My next purchase once I start using Mav full time, will either be a belkin thunderbolt dock or the akitio thunder dock. So I can run my hard drives, tv etc from the thunderbolt port.
Problem is, I'm unsure if I can update my thunderbolt port in my machine, and both docks will only run on thunderbolt two.
in about this mac my information is this:
    Model Identifier:     MacBookPro8,2
    Boot ROM Version:     MBP81.0047.B27
    SMC Version (system):     1.69f4
If I install the firmware updates here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
will I be able to update the firmware for my thunderbolt port from
    Firmware Version:     22.1
    Port Micro Firmware Version:     2.0.7
to whatever the latest one is, because I saw a post saying the latest frimware version is 25.1
    any advice/ideas?
    Cheers Iain.

I emailed Akitio and got this reply.
"The AKiTiO Thunder Dock is using Thunderbolt 1 but it's compatible with  both Thunderbolt 1 and Thunderbolt 2, so you can use it on earlier  machines as well as the latest Thunderbolt 2 machines. However, the  minimum system requirement is Mac OS X 10.9, so you will need to use  Mavericks.
Regarding the EFI and SMC firmware, it's good to use the latest version  and we usually recommend to update it as part of our troubleshooting  process. The page you provided is the one I would have suggested too, so  you can follow the links there and update your machine.
Keep in mind that this will not upgrade your Thunderbolt port as you put it, it only updates the firmware of your system."

  • Monitor refresh rates and Open Firmware

Does anyone know if it's possible to change the default monitor refresh rate of an iMac in Open Firmware and how?
    Thanks.

Thanks but I think the iMac G5 does have a refresh rate or something analogous to one, in this case I believe it is 60 hertz. I want to know how to change it in firmware because I believe it will solve an issue my display suffers from. See here:

  • After update at startup, it opens in a dos look and open firmware...

Just wondering after I updated my wife's computer, it's asking me upon every start up that it's an open firmware and to type in start-up or something like that. Is there a setting to have the computer start normally? On Tiger, do I need to do the hold power after it starts to activate the firmware?

I tried that last night but it didn't fix anything. On the other hand, I noticed that when I took the USB cable out that was connected to my printer, it loaded fine. I wonder why that happens? I dosen't happen on my macbook pro i5. Her computer is running Tiger 10.4.11 and it's a 2001 model. Pretty old.

  • TS2951 after installing snow leopard 10.6.3 from tiger 10.4.11 everything upgraded and opens correctly except the dock. It is still running with the old dock.

help, the original HD (10.5.8 leopard) crashed and i replace it with one a little smaller HD (10.4.11 tiger). It was real jerky and i couldn't play a lot of my games. Since I had always wanted to upgrade to snow leopard anyway I did. Always wanted to get the app store. Still don't have it! what did i do wrong or better yet, how to i fix it?
up graded from 10.4.11 with 10.6.3 - everything is great except it is using the old dock. I don't have the download icon, the utility icon the app store icon in my doc. - and when looking in finder i don't find the app store application - not real sure what else or where else to look.

  • Motherboard/CPU upgrade and Raid/ XP

    Hi
I am thinking of changing my existing 865pe fisr motherboard and P4 2.8 for an AMD64 .nforce4 board.
My existing system has 2*WDS120gb serial raid 0 striped drives. (Intel 82801ER controller)
Will any new motherboards see my existing raid config or will I have to back it all up (yuk)?
As I will be selling my existing mb/CPU/windowsXP on in an old case is Win 64 worth having.
    Kev

Sorry it's a user-to-user forum so no msi technical support are allowed. However i do used the intel rig but using the different chipset. As mine using the via chipset and i've tried it but fails as the raid couldn't detect while amd now using the either Nvidia and Via chipset unless you're using the same chipset but now you're going to get the Nforce4 mobo so it's better for you to create the new raid array. Gd luck.

  • OS X Tiger and CPU Upgrades

I have a 400 MHz G4. I primarily use it for FCP 2 and music but have been having problems seeing my Que Fire firewire cdrw. I have thought about a CPU upgrade and want to add a DVD+-RW to copy projects out to DVD's instead of tapes. With the trouble of having to hack a driver in 9.2 to get a DVD unit to work - would it be easier to upgrade to OS X Tiger to get around the DVD issues and get new features but am I only going to have more issues because of the upgraded CPU. The Apple specs say OS X is not compatible with upgrades but the manufacturers of the cpu upgrades say they are. Several of the new OS X DVD units I've looked at require at least 500MHz. (I posted earlier on the OS 9 forum - my old cdrw works on a new FW equipped laptop with Tiger.) I'm trying to get some more life out of my old G4 because I can't afford to buy a new G5. Any suggestions???? Thanks

You will triple the stated clock speed, but in no way
will the machine run 3 times as fast. You'll be lucky
to notice much change at all.
Yes you're right, in real world terms the machine won't be 3 times as fast, as you're still stuck with the same 100MHz system bus and memory etc, but I think that saying you'll be lucky to notice much change at all is a little unfair.
I recently upgraded the processor in one of my Macs and the difference was very noticeable, from reduced boot/rendering/encoding times to greater all round responsiveness.
If you're moving from OS 9 to OS X and you don't upgrade the processor, I expect OS X will feel pretty sluggish in comparison, although like you say more RAM will help.

  • CPU upgrade on Satellite L30-101

Hi, I have a Toshiba Satellite L30-101. I've upgraded the RAM successfully to 2GB (2x 1GB) but I'm finding it incredibly hard to get information on processor replacements.
The laptop has the latest BIOS on it (3.10-WIN - 19/02/08) but when trying to find information regarding whats in it I'm hitting brick walls. Firstly the site > http://www.toshiba-tro.de/biosinfo/ < doesn't have my laptop on it,
    Product Type: Notebook
    Family: Satellite
    Product Series: Satellite L Series
    Model: ? unknown
    Short Model No: ? unknown
I did hope I could stick an Intel Duo in but with the ATI chipset, I'm pretty sure it wont work but again without knowing whats within BIOS, compatible.. I'm lost. The only processor I can find which may work, same package, FSB, socket is an Intel Core Solo Processor T1350 which kicks out 1.86 GHz, not a massive difference and I'm sure it can't be the only replacement option.
Could someone and staff please help me with getting hold of BIOS info and compatible processors for my laptop. The current Intel Celeron M Processor 410 kicking out 1.46 GHz isn't good enough for Vista (cert on laptop) and basic multi tasking. Its lagging way too much even after a good tune up, ram upgrade, HD upgrade to 7200RPM. I'm in need of a processor upgrade but as mention finding it incredibly hard to obtain information of which would be compatible.
    Sincerely,
    Gourcuff

    Hello
In my opinion your attempt to replace CPU is wrong. Why? Satellite L30 is not designed to offer some fabulous performance and it is designed for everyday usage. Best evidence for this was the price. It was not so expensive.
Can you please tell us why do you want to have new CPU? Do you use some special software?
Back to CPU replacement. As you probably know mobile computers have limited upgrade options and it is related to RAM and HDD upgrade. It is definitely unprovided for CPU upgrade and it is not supported. Specific design, especially cooling system is designed for certain CPU.
Due to all this you will not be able to find any relevant info about CPU replacement.
Check please this Toshiba document - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB9401AX0001R01.htm

  • Satellite M40x will not boot up after CPU upgrade test

I have an M40x Laptop. I took the CPU out of it to replace it with another to test the computer booted up fine so I shut down and took it out and put it's original CPU back in, and it would not boot. Now it will not boot up at all with either of the CPU's all. When I turn on the power all I get is a white screen for a few seconds and the laptop shuts itself back down. Both the CPU's are good because I have since tested them in other computers to make sure that was not the problem.
Anyone have any ideas on what is causing this??

    Im not surprised.
As far as I know Toshiba does not support any CPU upgrades and it's not advisable to do something like that.
Its a fact that the CPU replacement on the notebooks is not easy and mostly not recommended.
The processors used in portables are connected to the system board using a process called TCP (Tape Carrier Package). This is a permanent connection method and is used in the interests of miniaturization and heat dissipation.
Did you assign the new heat paste? Its necessary and important if you want to connect the CPU again.
So possibly this is a reason for the no booting.
I think more details you will get from the service guys in your country

  • IPhoto 9.3 stalls out during photo upgrade and won't upgrade photos.

After upgrading to Lion and updating iPhoto (9.3), I started to upgrade my photo library. It stalls during step 5 at 94%. I have let this go over night (8 hours) and it never completed the upgrade of photos. How do I fix this so I can use iPhoto and not lose my photos?

*** NEW UPDATE TODAY ***  I have had the same problem - tried to upgrade library, got caught at step 5 of 9 and never could get past it.  Have been wrestling w/ various workarounds for 2 weeks.  Apple released an update today that resolves the issue. I just installed it from software update in system preferences. After the install/update I restarted my Mac (though it wasn't required). Then, 1) hold down option key while starting iPhoto; 2) select the library you want to upgrade; 3) iPhoto went through the library upgrade and opened without hanging up as it had in the past. Note, I used a library which had previously hung up forcing me to force-quit. It still worked fine. Good luck all.

  • IMac G3 won't boot - starts in Open Firmware

Hi there, I tried to install Debian PPC Linux on my iMac G3, it didn't install properly and now the machine only boots to Open Firmware.  I would like to re-install Mac OS 9, I have the system software disc.  Please could someone advise on how best to do?  Thank you!!

Is this a tray or slot loading iMac?
    I'll assume slot.
I forget what booting into open firmware signifies. :-(
It does seem like a reset situation.
Sometimes if volumes don't appear in Startup Manager (what you get when you hold down the Option key at startup), you need to reset the Mac's PRAM, NVRAM, and Open Firmware. Shut down the Mac, then power it up, and before the screen lights up, quickly hold down the Command, Option, P, and R keys, until the Mac has chimed twice more after the powerup chime. Then, before the screen lights up, hold down Command-Option-O-F until the Open Firmware screen appears. Then enter these lines, pressing Return after each one:
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
"The reset-all command should restart your Mac. If so, you have successfully reset the Open Firmware settings."

How to eject a cd from the internal cd drive:

  • Open Firmware Password; not on Snowy Upgrade DVD; how do I get hold of it?

    hey;
my MBP15 came with 10.5 & i got the snowy upgrade dvd from apple; there's no Open Firmware Password utility on the upgrade DVD (i even searched using pacifist) and it cannot be downloaded from apple's downloads. this seems a serious omission since i protect my mac (somewhat) with it.
does anyone know how i can get it, since i think it's pretty product specific; if it's actually different from the version on the original 10.5 disk that shipped with the machine or would some kind soul with the same machine (MacBookPro5,1 MBP51.007E.B05) have to share it with me?

actually, don't trust me; i'm wrong.
thank you so much, roam! you do indeed have to boot from the dvd!
what had me fooled is that pacifist didn't find it, and it used to be a discrete file which you could simply drag from the utilities folder of the install disk on to your mac.
i have now enabled the firmware password!
    thanks again!

  • Long tone on start up and then goes into open firmware

I stumbled upon the older posts here and thought I'd add a solution.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6115258
It was about an emac starting up with a long tone and the led flashes a few times and then goes into Open firmware, and when doing "mac-boot" in open firmware, it attempts to start, shows the apple symbol, the screen goes dim and crashes.
It could be a bad power switch. To confirm - you can remove the emac case, be careful not to touch the motitor's picture tube. Find the cable to the power switch; with a small wire just touch together the black and red wires on the power switch cable (or it might be red and green). This will start the emac. If it boots up and runs OK then the power switch was bad. Not sure where to buy a new switch. I soldered and glued my switch together.
    <Edited by Moderator>

Or, you'll find both the short pigtail-cabled nVidia graphics driven power switch and the version with a longer cable used with the AIT graphics driven models here* for a good deal less.
Note that the later ATI version can actually be used with either product generation.
