  • Which Is the Best App to Show CPU Usage by App?

ActMonitor by Aeonika ($.99) and System Activity Monitor by Recession Applications LLC ($1.99) are the 2 activity monitors with 5 star ratings.  However, the info available for each in the App Store and their websites failed to show whether either measured each open and background apps CPU usage individually.
Knowing that info is the only way we'll get to the bottom of iOS 7.1's higher battery usage.
Does anyone know of a CPU usage monitor that does give us individual app CPU usage?

  • High CPU usage while display is asleep

This is a strange one, and I've noticed it on multiple distros, and Arch is no different.  When my system is sitting idle with the screen on my CPU usage hovers around 5%, which I would consider to be perfectly normal.  However, when the display goes to sleep (no screen saver, just DPMS sleep) the CPU jumps up to about 25% and stays there until I bump the mouse (or do whatever to wake the system up), and then it will drop back down to the normal 5% CPU usage.
I had always thought it had something to do with Firefox, but I had Firefox closed while I was away at work today, and yet when I come home and wake my computer up my CPU usage graph shows that it's been at a solid 25% all day long.
Anyone have any ideas what this might be, or recommend a way to hunt down exactly what process is eating my CPU cycles while the display is off?
Thanks a lot, this has been puzzling me for some time now.
EDIT: I should add that I am running KDE, and have been on the other distros as well (to the best of my recollection).  After realizing this it seems like this thread may be better suited for the Applications & DE forum, but I'm not sure... it could very well be something to do with the kernel or something to do with power saving.  Please move if you see fit.

The CPU usage is not accounted for in the system monitor app.  There's roughly 4% usage accounted for, yet there's a total of 29% being used.
The script doesn't seem to find anything either.  High idle CPU usage kicks in maybe 3/4 of the way through, but the output doesn't seem to change from the beginning at all.

  • Unusually high cpu usage with iMovie 6.0.3

I'm having trouble with very high cpu-usage. Just the open imovie app is taking up about 50%, during playback it sometimes peaks over 100%! The project file is pretty big (about 30 gig), but that is mainly because of the amount of footage imported into it. The movie itself is about 25 minutes in length. There is some audio editing going on: some soundeffects, musicfiles (no drm-protection), audio commentary that i recorded within imovie. I know that imovie has trouble when there is a lot of audio/audio editing involved and this project is probably a little more complex than other stuff i did in imovie, but i never had such problems. i can hardly use playback anymore. I recently updated Quicktime to 7.6.4 and Perian to version 1.2.1. Any ideas what's going on or how to work around the problems? Since the movie is about 80% finished i don't really want to start all over again. Thanks in advance for your input!

    Hi Klaus1
I have several plug-ins by cfx and the slick volumes 4, 6 8 and 10. I can post a list of all of them if you like. Up to now they never made any trouble, but you'll never know...
The edit in the timeline is about 25 minutes long. But the project file contains captured dv-footage of about 2 hours, so that alone adds up to something like 26 GB. Then there are a few rendered effect-clips done with some of the plug-ins like stabilizing or color correction which also add to the 30 GB, as well as some audio-files (some music, my voice-over commentary). I emptied the trash several times while working on the movie. At this moment there are only a few MB of erased audio in it.
It all sounds a bit like this is an insanely huge and complex project, but as i said, i have done projects like this in imovie without the massive cpu-usage. I'd like to continue to use imovie, but if this problem keeps coming up with future projects, i might as well take the step and switch to Final Cut Express.
For now I will try your idea of exporting the movie as it is now and open it in a new project file.
Thanks for your help and input so far!

  • High CPU Usage With 2.6.32

    Hi
Ever since the kernel update my CPU usage has its own will. Would it normally stay under 10%, does it now ad 20% while only moving a window around. (nothing else open) Scrolling up and down got me to 95%! (with firefox 1 tab open/nothing else open) And as you can imagine this is getting annoying. Is there a solution? Someone who could help me?
I have Openbox as a WM. No DE.  /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp uses almost always around 5% with tops to 40%.
The problem occurs with my Acer Extensa 5230.

  • Slow computer -- High CPU usage

OK here's the specs of my computer:
    G4 933Mhz, 1.5Gb Ram 80Gb internal HD, but booting from a 250Gb external firewire
Now the problem. My CPU usage in Activity monitor gets close to 100% system usage after a few hours even if I don't have more than a couple of programs running. I do notice that pmTool and Kernel_task are eating up the majority of the CPU cycles though. When I boot from the internal it happens as well, but to a much lesser extent.
I did an archive and install of the 10.4 on the firewire and the problem still exists. Current system is 10.4.8.
Any ideas how to stop this? It appears that this problem started about a month ago and the only piece of software that's been updated since then has been Skype and Second Life.
    Eric

I have been looking at applications that might be eating up the processor and the only one that's doing it is the System right now. Restarting seems to help. I've been running for a couple of hours since the last restart and my current stats are 16% User and about 20%-60% System. pmTool seems to be the hog at the moment at 22.5% Kernel_task is only at about 6% though.
Any more information you'd like that could help to diagnose the problem let me know and I'll provide it. here's the current console log if that might help:

  • Odd freezing up and high CPU usage reported

Occasionally, my system will become unstable and freeze up. Finder normally causes the problem and there is the spinning rainbow wheel of death. On a similar note, activity monitor reports 55% system CPU usage, when there is nothing listed that is using that much CPU, and, when this happens I am unable to shutdown, unless I hold down the power key. Any suggestions?

Mostly the output is from errors from google chrome, really meaningless. My system froze 2 times in the past 15 minutes, and i was using a USB drive, brand new. I have had issues with 3 USB drives overall, and what happens is that the system uses 55% CPU on an unregistered single core process, so it uses 100% of one core and the rest spills over to the other core. It is apparently a system process, no records of any issues in console... But when i killall Finder and attempt a manual reboot now command, it's stuck on the blue screen, and I would need to do a hard shutdown by holding down the power key in order to be able to use my computer. Sometimes it freaks out when i am copying something on the disk as well, BUT my entire system passes the Apple Hardware extended test, so i'm confused as to what my next option is to do. Reinstalls tend to be annoying and the problem presents itself even after reinstalling, and using different USB drives, and repartitioning the USB drives. This is all pointing to a software driver bug, or finder just *****

  • Tables too high in safari 3  UPDATE -SOLVED

after I made all the adjustments, everything seems to be
working OK in both IE and Safari 3. Except the tables. They are
always too high.. What can I do, please?

    Update:
I got a message that it also was too high in Mozilla. I

absolutely astonished that neither of your guys, even the 'experts'
and 'seniors'. who were so fast off the mark to voice their

    The SIMPLE solution:
the original line I had, for example:

    SHOULD BE:
    <td bgcolor="#FFFFFF" class="normal_text">Any

How about a CC such as.....

I know it gives a hor scrollbar but I think it looks better

  • Cameras & CPU usage

I'm suffering with similar high cpu usage issues,as others. But, the camera used makes a huge difference. Using iSight, iChat uses from 30-45%, but using the camera I'd like to use, a Canon Optura, the usage rises immediately to 60-90%.
No other apps are running, no Quicktime or iChat add-ons, and the high usage occurs in video preview mode, so no net issues are involved. As others have reported, it starts lower and climbs up after a few minutes. I'm running 10.5.6.
They both enter the Mac using firewire. Obviously, the difference comes down to a difference in the signals, but can anyone enlighten me further?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    There is also this http://b-l-a-c-k-o-p.com/CamCamX.html
It allows some VJ type things and can output that Video to several Apps.

  • Timed loop and CPU usage

Platform is WIN_XP Pro and machine is a P4 at 2.5Ghz with 512 Mb ram.
    LV7.1 + PCI 6229
I am using  50ms Timed loop for running a state machine inside it
and also a  whole lot of other things like reading / writing
DAQMx  functions;  file I/O functions and such. As the
project involves a  main and sub-panlel set up local variables
could not be elimnated fully and there should be something like 150 of
them. But not all are accessed always - maybe about 15 of them at any
given time depending on the SM staus.
    Problem :
Once started the "Finished late"  indication  is off and
the  actual timing  alternates between 49 to 52 ms. The CPU
    usage is around 25%.
But as time goes by,  the system gets unstable : After 15 minutes
or so, the Finished Late indication is always ON and the CPU usage is
gradually tending towards or exceeds 100%.
Obviously the machine control timing now gets affected and things slow
down badly. Closing the application ands restarting repeats the above
    cycle.
I am at a loss  to understand what is happening ?  WIll
breaking down the single Timed Loop to multiple ones help  ? WIll
that be an efficient way of parallel threading ?
I can post the code but its quite large and will do it as a last resort.
    thanks

    Hello,
It sounds like an interesting problem.  It would be worth some experimentation to figure out what's going wrong - attempting to decouple major "pieces" of the code would be helpful.  For example, you could try breaking your code into multiple loops if that makes sense in your architecture, but perhaps you could even eliminate all but one of the loops to begin with, and see if you can correlate the problem to the code in just one of your loops.
Another concern is that you mention using many local variables.  Variable read operations cause new buffer allocations, so if you're passing arrays around that way, you could be hitting a problem of forcing your machine to perform many allocations and deallocations of memory.  As arrays grow, this can be a bigger and bigger problem.  You can use other techniques for passing data around your block diagram, such as dataflow if possible (just simple wires), or queues where dataflow can't dicatate program flow completely.
Hopefully looking into your code with the above considerations will lead you in the right direction.  In your case, removing code so that you can identify which elements are causing the problem should help significantly.

  • CPU Usage - Generating Word Docs from RoboHelp X5

If you have generated a fair-sized document through RoboHelp,
and you are having problems with your CPU usage pegging out around
100%, bouncing up and down between 50% and 100%, the page
repainting as you scroll through the document, etc., this solution
    is for you!
I am using RoboHelp X5 to generate large Word documents
(2003). This solution worked perfect for me. The problem is with
document corruption, apparently. After you have generated your Word
document and opened the document, be sure to display the paragraph
marks. You will probably see the “]” mark at or near
the end of the document. Select your entire document,
except for the final paragraph mark, making sure to exclude
this symbol, and copy everything else. Open a blank Word document
and paste this content into the new document.
You will now need to reattach your template (.dot) file for
the generated document through Tools/Templates and Addins:
    1. Locate the applicable document template and attach it
(it's typically in the base generated project directory in RoboHelp
    - .dot file). Click the OK button to save.
    2. Return to Tools/Templates and Addins. Click the Organizer
button to display the Styles tab.
    3. In the right-hand list (In Normal.dot), Close the
    Normal.dot file
    4. Open the same RoboHelp .dot template as you selected
    previously.
    4. Select all of the styles once they display in the right
pane and click the <<Copy button to copy them all over to the
document template. Confirm that you want to replace all styles in
    the document.
    5. Close the menu using the Close button. The dialog closes
and your styles should all be updated, if your styles were set up
appropriately via template and style sheet settings.
You may need to also adjust the Page Setup page width
    settings, if necessary.
    Good luck!

    Peter:
Thank you for responding to me, as I may not have been clear
enough, and I apologize for that. I was trying to keep it short and
sweet. This problem started when I began using RoboHelp X5 this
    year.
    To clarify...
    - I'm not concerned with CPU usage during document
generation, that is to be expected. The document will need to be
generated originally from a RoboHelp WebHelp project. This does not
change. The problem takes place AFTER you generate a large document
and then open it in MS Word.
    - My documents are large, 140-500 pages. It took forever to
scroll through the Word document (RoboHelp-generated), the screen
kept repainting, and the CPU usage stuck fluctuating frequently
between 50% and 100%, not allowing me to do much else. Editing
those documents was a nightmare. Even if I shut down all other
    programs.
    - Something translates to the Word doc from RoboHelp that
maxes out the CPU usage, and I can't locate the exact culprit.
However, it appears to be tied to the faded "]" symbol at the end
of the document (there is a "[" at the beginning, too). So you have
to omit more than the last paragraph mark; that symbol also needs
    to be left out.
    - The "corruption" information came from Microsoft; it could
be something other than that, but this is what they said. I found
nothing that would help on the RoboHelp forum, so I went to
Microsoft to see if they had a solution. Apparently, this is a
common problem with Word 2003, but the articles didn't mention
RoboHelp in the issues. I tried this solution, adding the omission
of the "[" symbol, with complete success.
    - When you copy the document without the last paragraph mark,
it will still include the headers/footers when you paste it
(although you may need to adjust them slightly). This is not the
    problem.
    - When a document is generated, you can select to use a MS
Word template, which I do. I fully use the style sheets in
RoboHelp, and they match my Word styles (template) to keep things
in sync. Actually, this Word template remains in the project; it is
not moved to the folder that holds your Normal.dot file. So the
link to the template in RoboHelp from your document does in fact
remain intact. However, you can copy that template to another
folder outside the project and link it from there, but it won't
    matter.
    - The Word template (.dot) needs to be reapplied in order to
restore your styles, as the Normal.dot styles are applied when you
copy the content over to a new document. It doesn't matter where
you store the template. I reapply this SAME template after I copy
and paste the content into the new document. This is not the cause
of the problem. Note: The application of a template is not the same
thing as going back to the master copy. This is still a fresh
document, with the content pasted in and the same template applied.
    - I have tried deleting the local copy and starting over. I
have moved the file to another location. I have renamed or created
a 'save-as' copy of the file. I tried editing out any extra
un-necessary merge-tags in Word, looked for macros, etc. All of
these things do not resolve the CPU Usage problem.
I hope this makes more sense. You can try it out if you wish,
but you will need to do this with a large document and use the
Print View when looking at the document in Word. You'll have less
of a problem in Normal View, or with a smaller document (under 50
    pages).
    Good luck!

We have now come to the bottom line I think, because in rare cases we start getting Wait times. We have dropped to 18 DIAs (coming from 27) and think we will be OK at 20 DIAs.
Now, my real question : in reducing the nr of DIAs, we had presumed that the AVG CPU usage on the system would drop. However, on the contrary, we notice that actually CPU usage has increased ???!! Also Pool swaps seem to increase.
Is there any logical explanation to this ? Is it due to the fact that DIA processes need to be rolled out/rolled in more frequently ?

    Hi Jo,
This is interesting, and we have done the opposite by increasing the WPs at times until now we have over 35. Our user population is similar, split over three shifts.
I think swapping and WP usage depends a great deal on the type of programs being run.  I monitor sm50 and have a view defined that floats to the top any active work process.  Many times a single user will run a program such as a settlement job that suddenly shows up on 5 dialog WPs.   This type of event can eat up WPs very fast and slows things down considerably.   I would rather have extra WPs and use some temporary memory than squeeze the users.
But I am interested in seeing greater CPU usage since it never goes very high on our system.  We also have 5 each of update-1 and update-2 WPs, again because some of our programs seem to use the update-2 type more than you would expect.
The best thing is to have lots of main memory unless you are fortunate to have many processors.
So I would agree that the CPU is busy moving user context in and out and that would lead to swapping as well.
    Regards,
    Pat

  • Windows 7 Bootcamp CPU Usage issue

I just newly installed Windows 7 bootcamp on my MacBook Pro (2010). The installtion ran smoothly. But there seems to be a problem for me. The bootup time from being on to off or vice versa is 7 seconds flat.
And when I play games, my CPU usage would shoot up into the 80%-100%s making my screen freeze every 2 minutes, and typing anything onto a screen would take 2 seconds for my computer to compute.
Note: This was not the first time i install windows 7. The first time I did it, everything ran so smooth and fast. the bootup time would be at 2 seconds flat. no freezes when I play games or open anything up. How could I fix this?

    Hi,
I have an update so I thought I would share in case any other users are experiencing a similar problem.
I made an appointment with the Genius Bar at the Apple Store.
I went in and they ran a thorough diagnostic check on my Macbook Air and determined that the sensors were indeed faulty - several were providing no information "No reading" instead of providing a temperature. Thus, the Air was unaware of the temperature across multiple components.
Despite the laptop being outside the 12 Month Manufacturer Warranty, the Apple Store determined that it was covered under warranty through Australian Consumer Law - the laptop is now in for a complete repair under warranty at no cost to myself.
    I couldn't be happier.
