CPU Usage Seems Very High

Seems my CPU usage is very high.
Right now I've shut down any other users and am only running firefox, activity monitor and some dashboard widgets (that the activity monitor shows are not using any resources) yet my CPU usage is bouncing around with user at about 70%, system at about 15% and Nice about 10%
On the activity monitor something call perl seems to be using all the CPU.
What's going on and what can / should I do?
Thanks
iMac G5 20   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I'm not making much progress.
This morning after startup and with both my wife and me logged in the HP Scanjet manager process seemed to be taking over -- I quit the process and the CPU use calmed down.
Then I rebooted and with only me as the user and only the activity monitor launched the "perl" application consumed around 90% of the CPU.
I unplugged all extra USB stuff (including the scanner) and rebooted and the same is happening -- perl is at about 80% but it seems to split responsiblity between the user and the system (40% user / 60% system with perl at 80%)
The only other thing I have plugged in is an external hard drive connected by firewire -- it takes a back up every morning and houses my iTunes library.
Any thoughts?

  • CPU usage -- changing very frequently after setting Streams

    Hello All,
We implemented Bi-direactional Replication using streams and is working fine.
All of a sudden CPU usage spiked up on one database.
It is changing very frequently sometimes it reaches even 100% .
and this problem is on both the databases.
    Please help ,Production issue
    Thanks and Regards
    Nick

    Hello,
You need to find out which process consumes the CPU (it could be the capture slaves or apply slaves). There are many bugs on this area. Check the metalink Note:4378381. and check if you have applied all the recommended patches on top of your patchset.
It would be always better if you mention the PatchSet level (like 10.2.0.4) and OS Platform (like Solaris SPARC 64bit) for all databases involved in this configuration especially when you raise a thread to address a specific problem (than a consultative one).
    Thanks,

  • Satellite A200 crashing when moved or when CPU usage is too high

Alright so fairly recently my Toshiba Satellite A200 has started crashing whenever I pick up the laptop or run any processes that take the CPU usage up to around 100%.
This essentially means no 3D rendering or games and no running Photoshop and iTunes at the same time etc. Here's the kicker though, it only happens when the laptop is plugged in and not when on battery power alone. I've already tried using a different AC adapter and I cleaned off the hard drive for a fresh install of Windows 7 neither of which fixed the issue. I even went so far as to update the BIOS.
I am not fairly determined that this is solely a hardware issue but I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions as to which part may be acting up on me. Like I said it still works like a dream when running on battery power.

    hi Cyborg771,
it seems to be related to the ac-in jack..
is there any change or symptom when moving the ac-plug?
also the circuit that is managing the power supply could be the "bad guy"
if the contact to the powerboard isnt good, the circuit starts to check the state every 10ms..this will slow down your machine...
    how old is your notebook?
    still got warranty on?
a solution may be to solder/fix/change the jack
    or see a servicepartner

  • CPU temperature seems rather high

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad R61, and my temperature under normal load seems to stagnate around 50 degrees Celcius, which seems kind of high. When put under heavy load (compiling a kernel) it steadily rose to around 66 degrees celcius before I stopped the operation. While under heavy load,  /proc/acpi/ibm/fan reported 3202, and under normal load now it reports 3125. Is it just me, or this CPU temperature kind of high? What can I do about it?
PS: Because it's a thinkpad, I can't use lm_sensors. thinkpad_acpi module takes care of such things.

    Hah, IME laptops = heaters.
Even my dinosaur P2 celeron lappy gets to 70C CPU under load BEFORE the BIOS turns on the fan.
I think the idea is to hold off running the cooling as long as possible so cpuidle/speedstep can allow the chip to cool before using battery to run the fan.
As for the AC adaptor heating up, this smacks of poor design, the PSU should be able to maintain full load + battery charging for at least as long as a full charge from empty takes. Anything else is cutting corners based on 'yeah but how often will THAT happen'.
If your ACPI setup is not doing what it should, power consumption + heat output will be excesive under no/low load but full load power is full load power, as there is nothing to turn off.
My attitude would be, set up acpi and speedstep then ignore the temps. If it cooks under load then the hardware cooling solution is rubbish.
Seriously though, your temps sound quite normal. Look up the specs for your CPU on processorfinder.intel.com (or the AMD equivalent) you will probably be surprised at how high the max temperatures are. As for the AC adaptor - Don't run full speed while the battery is charging? The damn thing should be designed to handle it.
Do try and keep the HDD cool if you can - it is spinning down when not used right? Modern HDDs generate a fair bit of heat themselves when running and there ain't much airflow around the disc in most laptops.
EDIT: your HDD temps look sweet.
    Have you played with laptop_mode?

  • TMPIN1 seems very high

Greetings..bare with my ignorance as i have only worked on the x-58 classified from evga..
I am assuming this temperature is the mainboard or north bridge? im use to seeing system temps of 24c and mainboard temps of 25c..this tmpin1 idles at 75c without overclocks..about 85c with them..
Does anyone here know the max thermal limit? this seems way to high and i am a temp freak..right now i only keep my chip on water but now am thinking of aftermarket cooling for the board

    Quote from: HU16E on 10-July-10, 13:23:50
Water cooling on the CPU, that explains a lot. No passive air getting to the IOH.
    Quote
I did and to the dude saying water cooling explains it..i have 4 90cf fans on the side blowing into the case huge fan fron blowing to the case top fans fan..(haf 932) it had nothing to do with air flow
I believe that reference is toward me. To be specific, I said 'explains a lot' not explains 'it'. To say air flow has nothing to do with it is an incorrect assumption. You can have ten fans blowing in from the side & that doesn't necessarily equal good air flow. No need to start an argument over this, make your concerns known to MSI Tech Support. For comparison, the BB X-Pwr I just built for an uncle was 54C at idle, mine was 52C last week & has come down to hovering at 49-50C. Both use Zalman 9900's on the CPU that provides a little bit of passive air, & no additional cooling directed at the IOH has been added. The fact remains, as long as the IOH temp doesn't exceed 95C Tcontrol at sustained full load, there should never be any issues, & that's per Intel. Lifespan & performance according to their specs, is the same at 95C as it is at 50C.

  • HT6065 mavericks battery usage seems disproportionately high

Since the update the battery seems to take ~50% to 60% as long to discharge.  The machine also generates a lot more heat when performing regular activities such as browsing.

I was able to play the video for 6 hours and 30 minutes on my iPhone after the full charge yesterday. I stopped the video about five minutes after I receive the 10% low battery warning because I didn't want to run it to low. Here is the stat:
    Usage: 7 hours 49 minuts
    Standby: 21 hours
Video: 6 hours and 30 minutes (total time based on the six mp4 videos)
I didn't make or receive phone calls, check emails or surf the web. The ATT signal was at full with auto brightness on, but WIFI off, with occasional Yahoo push emails. I can comfortably say that Apple's claim of upto 7 hours of video is pretty close based on my own testing. Who knows how long I could keep the video going after the 10% low battery warning...
By the way, I notice something quite strange about the battery warning. After I got the 15% low battery warning, in less than 3 minutes I received the 10% low battery warning again. How could it drop 5% of battery in less than 3 minutes??? This was kinda odd.

  • High CPU usage, overheating, and high fan speed on DV4-1125nr

the process igfxsrvc.exe is running in between 30 and 40 of my CPU. my total CPU is about 55% or so while idle. i tried disabling that driver, and it's CPU went down to about 20, but my total CPU was still at the same place, if not a little higher. also, my computor is overheating a lot, and my fan is constantly running on it's highest speed. i do not believe that this is caused by a dirty vent. also, I have checked the version of the graphics driver and the BIOS(both of which i saw the suggestion to update by several people having similar problems) and both are up to date. what is the problem? am i being highjacked/ infested with viruses and i dont know it despite having already ran all my virus protection and anti-malware programs? someone please help before i have to take it to geek squad! thank you in advance!

    Hello,
I decided to sacrifice a little bit of performance for the sake of cool temperatures and silent fan. I have HP DV6, with AMD Turion RM-74 and HD4650.
So, Yes, You will loose up to 15 percent Your CPU power, but heyh, this processor is so fast that You will barelly notice the change. You will still watch HD content with 720p and everything else smoothly. Note, that gaming will be harder part but consider Your laptop not as a device created for heavy gaming.
At one point or another, during games, someday Your notebook inevitably colapse. It's just not meant for gaming, no matter what the specs are...
So, how to reduce Your notebook temps:
    (i) Power Options -> More power options,
(ii) Balanced plan -> Change settings,
    (iii) Change advanced power settings
(iv) Processor power management -> Maximum processor state -> On Battery - 50 percent, Plugged in - 85 percent.
    (vi) Save changes and close.
Now, mine temperatures are - idle 48, heavy load - 57, extremelly heavy load (HD 720p content) - 62-63. (At the moment my CPU cores are at 47 celsius).
CPU still works fast, not so fast as it is working on 100 percent, but hey, fan is silent, and if You want gaming - go to Your desktop pc, leave notebook for lighter tasks, even though the notebooks specs are high,
it simply cannot handle the heat.
    Best regards.

  • High CPU Usage On client application when upgrade remote SQL database

    Hi,
Is anyone here encountered very high CPU usage after upgraded the database from SQL 2005 to SQL 2012? Following describes my issue.
I have my client application running on Windows 7 that access to central database (SQL 2005) on Windows server 2003 using ODBC connection, this client application basically query data and perform data insert and update. There are a number of this similar
    clients connected to the database.
Due to slowness of the database server, company decided to upgrade the database server to SQL 2012 and also new hardware runing Windows Server 2012. There is no change on the client application and client hardware and the client application still using the
same ODBC connection to query, insert or update the new database server.
The problem I am now experiencing now is that my client PC where my client application running the CPU usage is very high almost hitting 100% when accessing to the central database. I am also noticed this program lsass.exe that utilized almost 40-50% of
the CPU time when client application accessing the central database.
Is anyone here know, why client PC CPU usage 100% when access to upgraded SQL 2012 database? What is lsass.exe program doing, it only appear when accessing to database server. How to reduce the CPU usage on client?
    Thanks.

  • IMac Air High CPU Usage while Idle / Kernel Issues

    Hello,
I am attempting to repair an MacBook Air that a customer spilled a small amount of orange juice into. I have completely taken the unit apart and thoroughly cleaned the motherboard and all components. There doesn't appear to be any physical damage done from the liquid. The problem is that the customer claims that since the spill happened the computer runs "very slow" and the CPU usage is very high even while completely idle (Bounces between 60%-80%). Being versed primarily in Windows PC Repair I am looking to post some diagnostic logs on here and maybe get some help from someone who knows what they are looking at. The customer took the machine to the Apple Store and they told them it had a "kernel problem" and would need a new Logic Board. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I just need to know what diagnostic reports I need to post to get this ball rolling... Thank you for your time.

When I am in e-mail, I sometimes get the spinning color wheel, which lock up everything. when it doesn't go away, I see on the activity monitor, that CPU usage is very high (99%), for a process calles " Safari web content'. When I click on the proccess and quite, the CPUusage goes way down. Problem is that I have to then log back in to e-mail. What can I do to eliminate this proble.  thanks

How much FREE RAM do you have when this occurs. It's easy to tell, when it beach balls open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) click the System Memory tab and note how much FREE RAM is listed. If it's 500MB or less it's time for a RAM upgrade.

  • High CPU Usage - Satellite Pro L450 EZ-1510

Hello and thanks for reading. I am having a problem with my laptop that started a bit over a week ago. The CPU usage is very high, most of the time. I have tried a variety of things from updates to Windows and drivers, to security scans from various programs, yet the problem remains.
    Basic info:
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, 32 bit
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6570 @ 2.10GHz, x64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10
    Processor Count: 2
    RAM: 1912 Mb
Graphics Card: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family, 828 Mb
    Hard Drives: C: Total - 230364 MB, Free - 114501 MB;
I installed Process Explorer to have a better idea of the cause. A large part that takes up much of the CPU is the svchost.exe-taskeng.exe-NDSTray.exe-CFSwMgr.exe process.
I can easily post a HiJack this log or screen caps of Task Manager or Process Explorer, if this helps you analyze the issue.

    Satellite Pro L450-EZ1510
    Good detective work.
CFSwMgr.exe is the portion of your ConfigFree that resides in memory.
So it may be sufficient to uninstall and reinstall that utility.

Please check whether you configure Search service in your SharePoint.
And please use Taskmgr on the server to check which process may be cause this issue.

    Hi all,
Now i develop a project with VideoDisplay, my problem is when i play f4v file, my CPU usage is very high.., I also play the same file with Adobe Media Player, the problem is still exist.
Can anybody help me ~? thanks~,and sorry for my poor english~

I'm pretty sure one reason is that Flash "watches" the video so it can sync up the frames with other animations you might want to overlay.

  • Reduce CPU usage with RTMFT video chatting

    Hi,
We are using the FMS4 for 1-1 real time video chatting. it is fine but the CPU usage are very high.
(not P2P but use UDP based RTMFP) currently connection to server as " rtmfp://1.2.3.4:80/live"
we use the :80 I guess it helps to deal with the firewall with HTTP tunneling? (seems if it is true, it will this degrade performance?)
with 320*240; it is using 30~50 % CPU;  with 480*360: 40-60% CPU at the clients.  so high... decent client machine: Intel i5 650. Quad 3.3Ghz  8G RAM. win7 64
Any idea on reducing cpu usage?

RTMFP is a UDP-based protocol and does not currently tunnel over HTTP.  when you specify port 80 with RTMFP, you're using UDP port 80, not TCP port 80.  also, that port 80 is the fmsedge port; you will be redirected to a different port (19350+ by default) for the true client-server connection.
RTMFP has significantly higher overhead than RTMP for two main reasons: 1) RTMFP is a complete network transport protocol of similar complexity to TCP, but implemented entirely in user space instead of in the operating system kernel, so every packet sent on the network requires special processing and at least one context switch to kernel mode for transmission or reception; 2) every byte of every packet in RTMFP is encrypted with AES-128-CBC, a non-trivial cipher requiring a not-insubstantial amount of CPU.  there is no unencrypted form of RTMFP.
