CPU whistle on 1.83GHz Macbook

My Macbook 1.83GHz has taken to whistling. The noise seems to be coming from the top-right.
After searching Google, I found that Macbook Pro owners have suffered from this problem. Their advice is to install the CHUD tools and use the CPU tool to temporarily disable a CPU core. If I do this, the noise goes away. They also mention switching on the webcam makes it go away. Sure enough, if I turn-on Photo Booth, the noise goes away. The trouble is that this also causes the fans to start spinning up, so one noise is replaced with another.
They also mentioned that Apple isn't doing much about this problem.
What is the current status regarding this problem? If I contact Apple, will they take the problem seriously (I'm in the UK, and my nearest service centre is a substantial distance away)?

It is really hard to say how seriously Apple will take the issue or not. But I recommend NOT using the CHUD tools. Not knowing the cooling controls for the machine, you could seriously jeapordize the life of your machine if the tools are used improperly and the machine overheats.
If your machine's firmware hasn't been updated, check this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303880
Check also the hardware doesn't show any errors on this test:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081
Make sure the back vent is not blocked:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303848
If after doing this, and you have come up with inconclusive results call AppleCare:
http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
If your machine is under an exchange/repair program, call them to get that taken care of:
http://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/
This is a user to user forum, and we can't really guess Apple's policy on such issues.

  • 1.83GHz MacBook Pro

I am the proud owner of a 1.83GHz MacBook Pro. I bought it almost exactly 60 days ago, and despite it's heat issues it's been great. Not only did it work great, it was wonderful knowing that I had one of the best laptops on the market. And while that still may be true, my model is now a bit out of date. Not too long ago, the 1.83GHz model was removed from the line to be updated to a 2GHz CPU. Essentially, it was revised.
While talking to a friend via iChat tonight, he mentioned that when Apple does minor revisions, such as the 1.83GHz jump to 2GHz, Apple will update your system for no charge. Is this true? Would Apple do this for the 1.83GHz MBPs? If so, how should I go to get mine upgraded? Should I simply call my AppleCare, or do I need to drive a province over to the Apple Store? If anyone knows any information on this it would be very helpful...
And if they won't do this, why wouldn't they? Apple seems to update their products very often, a bit too often if you ask me. Not offering an upgrade to those customers who would like it is like a software developer moving his software from version 1.5.2 to 1.5.3 with only minor security fixes, and charging current users over again. If it's not possible that would definatly be a nice thing to have.

Well, sorry but my opinion is that your friend is mistaken. Unfortunately, you can't call up Apple whenever they revise their product line and have them replace the machine that you just bought 1 day/week/month/year ago (unless its within the 14-day return period and you bring it back for a refund and then turn around and buy a revised one), unless its defective and you have it exchanged and luckily receive a newer computer. Buying a computer is just like buying a car or any other type of appliance or any other product for that matter. Technology is constantly evolving and it would be unfair to expect Apple or any other computer manufacturer to constantly exchange old hardware for new hardware (for free) as it is released/revised. Have you ever bought something and then been able to exchange it when its upgrade came along? Besides, the speed jump is ever-so-slight and unless you're doing CPU-intensive tasks, the difference will be negligable.
Just be glad that we're at 1.83GHz clocks and not at 1.67. Remember, the 1.83GHz speed itself was a last-second gift from Apple so we should all be thankful for that!

  • 1.83GHz MacBook & Sims 2?

I am after getting a 1.83GHz MacBook but would like to find out whether Sims 2 will work on it at all, as it requires G4 or G5 and the MacBook has an Intel Core 2 Duo.
I did a quick search to find that it wouldn't but there was a fix on the horizon, any news on that front?
I want to get a macbook but no point if Sims doesn't work on it

This is straight from the back of my box:
Mac OS X 10.3.8 or later
    PowerPC G4/G5 or Intel Chipset
    1.2GHZ or higher
    256MB RAM or higher
    3GB or more free space
    Video Card (ATI) Raedon 9000
    Video Card (nVidia) GeForce FX5200
    32MB VRAM or higher
I think I ordered it online from Apple, possibly Amazon. It was on sale right before Christmas. If I'm not mistaken the online store didn't list the Intel under system requirements. I think I ordered it just planning on playing under Rosetta, but was pleasantly suprised when I opened the box.

  • Anyone one using the 1.83Ghz Macbook ....

Hey Guys,, whts up? Well i am now really confused between both the white models (1.83Ghz and the 2.0Ghz). If you have a 1.83Ghz macbook, why did you choose it? Is it working well enough? Is the difference between the Ghz worth it all? Is the DVDRW worth it? Thx a lot.
    Ash.

    Hi mate,
DON'T BUY IT unless u don't kw what to do with your $$, because it runs slower than my window98 m/c.
Worst, the MacOS alone took-up 1/3 of the standard 60Gb hardisk space in which the Apple salesman never tell me during the purchase. If I knew it, I could have upgrade the m/c or stayed with my window98 notebook.
I'm speaking the truth, I bought this m/c from Singapore as an overseas student under educational purchase. Now studying in Sydney, the Singapore Apple office refused to honour the return of my m/c in Sydney except global warranty despite there're plently of Apple store in Sydney there. Instead, they expected me to incurr my own expenses to have the m/c courier into their Singapore Office.
It's a complete nightmare for me..........i simply get very very ANNOYED & FRUSTRATED everytime i run this MacBook:(

  • 1.83ghz Macbook pro - any issues before buying?

    Hi,
I have the option to buy one of the first Macbook Pro's for a very reasonable price. it is the 1.83ghz model and is an ex display model that has been in a box for some time. The battery is dead but aside from that it looks ok. my question is what should i be looking for? I seem to remeber there being issues with early Macbooks?
    thanks.

    Hi,
I had the Macbook for a full day today and all seemed ok.
I left in on all day and had a good play with it but i couldn't pick any faults with it.
The dead battery is covered under Apples exchange program and a replacement is available to me should i take the Macbook.
I can get this for £500, just a small scratch on the screen right in the bottom corner but other than that it seems good.
I also installed the firmware updates but all in all i think i'll go for it, the illuminated keyboard, 15" screen and aluminum case did it for me over the Macbook.
Thanks for your help, it made it easy to know what to look for.

  • How do I monitor CPU temperature on a 2009 MacBook Air Lion

My beloved 2009 MacBook AIr is freezing up.  I think it is overheating.  How can I monitor the CPU temp to see if this is the problem?
The Apple Store folk thought the SSD drive has gone bad, but they wanted $799.00 to replace it.  I bought a new 2013 MacBook Air, but returned it because the screen had a purplish haze to it and the contrast was poor (to my eyes).  I love my 2009 MacBook Air screen, so I want to fix it.

Download from the Internet iStat pro or Temperature Monitor from the Bresink web site.
    http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
I like IStat pro because it also displays the fan speed.
    Ciao.

  • New Macbook Pros CPU/GPU activity vs old Macbook white

I have a white Macbook C2D with GMA950 and I getting pretty tired of hearing the fans rev up when I use CoverFlow or when I watch Youtube videos. I need some insight on the Macbook Pros (13 inch) with the 9400m. For those who had a white Macbook similar as mine and now have a new Macbook Pro, do you see a big difference in the fan activity and heat dissipation?
I also like to play Warcraft 3 once in a while from OS X, so is the Macbook Pro with 9400m way more quiet than the Macbook with the GMA950?
It's time to move on for me, can't tolerate it anymore that my computer makes so much noise in the middle of a class or in the library as I scroll my documents in CoverFlow or when I use ArcGIS with Windows XP in Parallels.
So is the Macbook Pro quiet quiet quiet?

There is going to be a direct relationship to CPU/GPU usage and the fan speeds. Any virtual machine you run will eat up allot of resources as it works harder. Also while playing games like Warcraft you will need to keep the settings turned down to keep the MacBook quite. Over all I would consider all the current MacBook Pro's quite. But that's just my opinion.

  • The 1.83ghz MacBook will burn cd's right?

I was just wondering if the lower end MacBook will burn cd's since I have never done it before.

Yes, all currently shipping MacBooks come with a CD burner as standard.

  • 1.83ghz Macbook and Adobe/Macromedia ??

I'm a poor student at the moment and I'm considering the Macbook 1.83 because I already have access to a dvd burner if needed so don't want to pay the extra $400 for the 2.0Ghz model.
That being said does anyone know if this MacBook will be adequate enough to run Adobe CS2 (PS and Illustrator mainly for only simple, small tasks) and Dreamweaver/Flash?
Do you think the next version of these will run on this MacBook also?
    I appreciate any opinions here.

I use Adobe CS2 and Macromedia Studio MX 2004 on my Mac mini Core Duo 1.66GHz and I do find that the Adobe applications do run a little sluggish. Acceptable for the moment but ultimately not special. Macromedia Studio applications run better. Be sure to get more RAM as the standard 512MB is not enough.
As for Adobe CS3, while I do expect it to run on all Intel Macs when it is released it's not for certain. Like Apple, Adobe may start to use the GPU to assist with floating point calculations in their applications. It just comes down to how they want to position their products and whether they will care for the lower end of the market. Let's face it, how many people do you know who actually owns the copy of Photoshop they're using on either a personal or professional level?

  • 1.83Ghz Macbook Model Number A1181 Maximum RAM Question

The box for the laptop states my macbook can only handle up to 2ghz of RAM (2x1gb sticks), but I was wondering what would happen if I put 2x2gb stick in it, would the computer freak out and not handle it? It can only help right?

A combination of of A1181 (applies to several different machines?) on the case and 1.83 GHz means that you've got the earliest base model. Yeah - it'll probably freak out. Some have tried it and ended up with nothing working until a recommended memory configuration was inserted.

  • Can i upgrade cpu of my late 2009 macbook from intel core 2 duo to intel i5 for i7?

My macbook is a late 2009 macbook with 2.26GHz Intel core 2 duo processor with 2GB DDR3 memory. Can I upgrade its processor to latest dual-core intel i7 processors?

However drop an SSD in that puppy and bump the RAM to 8 GB and you'll never miss the i5 or i7 processor.

I only deal w/ OWC. Done 6 Macs so far: Mini, MBP MB Unibody 2009 like yours and not a hint of a problem w/ any of the installs.

  • PKR crashing - high CPU usage (windows XP, bootcamp, Macbook Pro 2.5GHz)

The PKR (3D online poker) client is crashing - often half way through a game, frustratingly. I'm running Windows XP via Bootcamp and have updated to the latest Apple Bootcamp drivers. I notice very high CPU usage (consistently maxing out a core) at all times when running PKR. Anyone else having trouble with this software?

I've also been getting Kernel panics in OS X, so I took my MBP to the Apple Store in Regent St, London. They tested it and found a problem with the memory controller. After a logic board replacement the laptop is performing very well - no crashes so far in Windows or OS X. Fingers crossed.

  • Should I send my whining MacBook to repair or exchange it?

I have a week 12 MacBook Pro 1.83 that has the horrible whine other people on this forum have described. It only happens when running on battery power, and goes away either by opening PhotoBooth, the Mirror widget, or plugging into AC power. Changing the screen brightness does not seem to affect the whine at all. The whine goes away if I leave the laptop idle. It immediately starts whining again if I move the cursor or type on the keyboard.
I picked this computer up at the Apple Store at Northpoint in Alpharetta last Wednesday (two days ago). I've already called Apple Support about the problem, and they are sending me a box and issued me a Dispatch Number. Seeing as this laptop is only two days old, I'm wondering if that's entirely fair. Maybe I should go back to the Apple Store (even if it is a two hour drive) and exchange for another new laptop. I guess my question is, how likely is it that after driving all the way back to Atlanta, and all the way back home, I'll get a new laptop that doesn't have the same problem?
And my biggest concern is that if/when I do get to the Apple Store, they'll insist that the whine is normal, and won't exchange it.
So what do you think? Should I go ahead and send off the MacBook Pro I already have for repair, or exchange it for a different one and hope for the best?
    Kinda depressed...

MacBook Pro 1.83 and iMac Core Duo 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Sure :
    Download the widget from :
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/webcams/mirror.html
Install it. When you hear the whine, hit the F12 key, if the mirror widget does not appear click on + to find it and launch. This will immediatly stop the CPU whistle, and switch on the green web cam light.
Then close the mirror widget (x on the left top of the windows) and rehit the F12.
You should be done with the whine unless you restart your machine

  • CPU clicking noise?

I don't know if this is significant, but if I move my laptop around too much like moving it from one room to another, after I put it down and start using it, the CPU (at least I think it's the CPU) makes a clicking sound for about 5 seconds then goes away. Any idea what it means? Who knows if it's a bad thing, just wanting to find out, thanks!

That sounds like it is the HD trying to park it's head, possibly because of the SMS sensor coming into play? I don't think it is a problem, but if it worries you, just take it into a Genius, or give AppleCare a call.
    Hope this helps.
