CQ-56 LAPTOP RANDOMLY SHUTS OFF

I purchased a used CQ-56 laptop, which had to be plugged in when used, previous owner had allegedy spilled water on keyboard rendering mousepad unusable. The laptop said the battery was bad, so I replaced it with one purchased from Amazon. Now, the computer will turn on but randomly shut off out of nowhere (happened with previous battery, but then I had gotten a error about the battery having low "whatever" and needing to be replaced). I would love to fix this laptop. As a college student, however, I need a reliable computer and if none of this troubleshooting works I will need to spend even more money purchasing a new one.

Hello stressedcollege,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand your used computer will randomly shut down, and it appears to be an issue with the battery. I'll go with that, and do my best to help!
Before anything else, please try the steps I provided in this thread, as they will likely resolve the issue: Re: battery charging
If not, please try Testing and Calibrating the Battery. You should be able to find out if the battery has any issues.
If the battery appears to be fine, you can try to improve your battery performance. For more information on improving battery performance, please review the following document: Improving Battery Performance (Windows 8, 7, Vista).
Please let me know the results of your troubleshooting. Thanks!

  • HELP!!! My Satellite Series A215-S7444 Laptop Randomly Shuts Off!!

I own a Satellite A215-S7444 and it will randomly shut off. Sometimes on good days it won't shut off at all while I might run it for many hours, but this is very rare. Most of the time I will be running it and it will shut off out of nowhere, I will turn it back on right away and it will power back on with all I was just doing lost in the process. It will again power down after I restart it after a couple of mins, and each time I restart it the random shutdown takes less and less time to shut off. When it gets to the point where I can't even power it on past the windows logo, I have to let it sit for a couple of hours to a day till I put it on again and it will let me use it for a while till it starts shutting down again. Every time it starts shutting down it's always in steps like (1st shutdown 30 min into use, 2nd shutdown 10min into use, 3rd shutdown 5min into use..... etc.) I downloaded a program to monitor if it's overheating when it shuts off and it's definitely not overheating. I checked the fan and cleaned it out, and it works fine and is clean. The shut off seems to happen mostly when I am trying to download or watch any video or movie files from the web. Usually when I try to watch one it is almost guaranteed to shut off shortly after, and I can be online for hours but as soon as I try to download or watch video it is a knockout punch for the laptop. I can repair myself and anything else that might need to be done or checked I just can't figure this mystery out. I do not want to take this in for repair because it is too expensive for them to tell me "figuratively speaking" that it was a $10 part and I have to pay $300 for labor, diagnostics, and repair when I could have done it myself for just the cost of the part. If I have no other choice then I will bring it in, but that is if there is no other choice. Please someone out there help me!!!!

same here. the only difference is that, it doesn't matter what i do such as just using microsoft word software, or just surfing the internet. It will eventually shut off by itself for only like 1 hour or less than 1 hour sometimes. I noticed that every time it shuts off, it's too hot where the fan is located. I don't know what's wrong with it because i don't have any knowledge about computers. All i know is that  it shuts off out of nowhere. Is this what you call overheating or something else?
It pisses me off because i'm doing my homework or a paper and it will randomly shut off while i'm doing something important for school. And to the fact that i just bought this laptop 2 yrs ago, the problem started when this laptop was almost 1yr. like you, i don't want to spend a lot of money just for labor. And oh, also, it will shut off right away when i use USB ports. anything that i plug in the USB ports or any accessories such as ports from laptop to the tv. it shut offs right away and i couldn't turn it on right away. not unless i wait for like 2 hours or more? after 2 hours, i am able to use it for quite a bit only.  it frustrates me.
is this manufacturer's problem? or what? what should I do? Should i bring it to the computer repairer again? I brought this computer for many times already.

  • Charger randomly stops working, laptop randomly shuts off

5 months after I had this brand new laptop it crashed on me.  I wasn't able to retrieve anything and they ended up not knowing what went wrong and just reformatted my computer for me and gave it back.
About a year later I'm having other issues.  The charger issue has been going on for a while now.  It will randomly just stop working.  It's not the battery because I plug in someone else's charger and it works just fine.  The little charging light will suddenly go off on mine and it will no longer charge - or sometimes when I plug it in to charge, it just does not light up and work.  I usually play around with it - unplug the charger from the outlet, unplut it from the adapter, take off the adapter, etc. wait around, etc. until it will finally work again.  I don't understand why it does that though.  There is no one thing that gets it to work again, it's just luck or whenever it feels like turning back on. (right now it is off and does not want to work)
My other issue is that my laptop starting a month ago has suddenly started to shut down at random moments.  It never does that when it's just sitting in front of me.  It happens when I pick it up and then the hard drive does that little 'click' thing and then boom my screen is black.  It doesn't happen often.  There are plenty of other times I pick it up and it clicks and everything is fine.  It's not even a huge movement with my laptop.  The times when it shuts off were triggered by SMALL normal motions.  I'm simply lifting it up to move it somewhere else.  It's SOOOOO irritating.
The two issues might possibly be related.  I have found that when the laptop just shuts off like that and it has been plugged in, the charger will all of a sudden stop working along with it!  Even if the laptop is shut off, the charger should still keep charging right?  But instead, the light for it also goes off and then I unplug and plug it back in and it doesn't go back on.
I cannot say how annoying this is.  I thought Apple was supposed to be a really reliable brand but I've had so many issues with it.
I will be going to the Apple store soon, but has anyone else experienced these problems??  And if so, I'd like to know what Apple did for you.
    Thanks!

  • My Laptop randomly shuts off while plugged in

This started about a month ago, has happened maybe 5 times? It will just shut off randomly, while plugged in. Lately the power cord has been really finicky, for instance when the computer shuts off, I'll unplug and restart, try to plug the power back in and it refused to charge. I then change power outlets in my room and it starts working again (sometimes). I'm wondering if this is an issue solely with the power cord, or some sort of issue with the computer itself? My computer is from about August 2011, Macbook pro 11". just about 15 minutes ago i picked up the computer to move it and it shut off. Thanks!

Okay, thank you for the quick response. What can I expect in terms of services/ fees? I'm under the impression it is still under warranty

  • Lenovo u400 laptop randomly shuts off

Occasionally the computer will shutoff randomly with no warnings as if the battery got somehow disconnected I think this might be some sort of hardware problem. is there anything I can do to fix this?

    Hi perrson22,
    Thanks for posting.
Currently there is no BIOS release for the U400 as we have not had any major issues that require a BIOSES to be released. However it you case I would suggest you to update all the drivers listed in the support site and check for the changes. But for starters Update the Intel management firmware Engine first and check for the changes then also update the Lenovo Powermanagement.. Click on the link below to download the IME.

    hope this helps.

  • Macbook Pro running very slowly, randomly shutting off and overheating. No idea what the problem is! Please help!

I got macbook pro about a year and a half ago and up until now it has been running fine.
However, in the last few days, it has been started to run tediously slowly!
It wont allow me to open applications and i have to force quit out of any applications I finally manage to have because they freeze or stop responding.
On Google Chrome, pages become unresponsive every few minutes.
Even writing this post took more than 20 minutes as the laptop kept freezing and the webpage became unresponsive.
It also randomly shuts off and when it restarts, a message comes up saying my Macbook was restarted because of an error.
I haven't downloaded or updated anything that I know of recently that would have caused this.
Ive been reading through some of the fourms on this and I thought it'd be helpfull to post some of the information you may need to help me solve this problem!
Id be very gratefull if any of you could help! Thanks!

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Macbook air randomly shuts off and won't turn back on

I have a 2011 Macbook Air that was given to me by my sister. She told me about a year ago she spilled water on the keyboard and it stopped working for a while. She took it to apple and they told her it was going to cost 700 dollars to replace so she decided not to. After a while the laptop randomly turned back on and started working fine. I ended up getting it as a free gift and it was working perfectly fine for about a month and a half until recently it randomly shut off on me. After it shuts off, it wouldn't turn back on through pressing the power button I left it alone and after a day it randomly turned back on and worked like normal. After about 15 minutes of use it randomly shuts down and won't turn back on. I tried resetting SMC to no avail. It randomly turns on for about 15 minutes before it feels like it gets slightly hot and shuts off. Any help will be great!

Try running an Apple Hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
If you find you can't, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be free and then you should know what the problems are with your MBA.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook pro randomly shutting off

Any suggestions why my laptop would randomly shut off? It's been happening for weeks. Have a fan under it and genius bar tested for hardware issue and said it's not hardware. any ideas?

    lfbtennis,
since you have a 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro with OS X 10.7.5 installed, you have Recovery mode available to you. Hold down a Command key and the R key as you restart to boot into Recovery mode. Eventually a Mac OS X Utilities menu will appear. Select Disk Utility from that menu. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select the icon that corresponds to your boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that it found errors, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to reboot into normal mode. Try using it as you normally would, and see if the random shutdowns still occur.

  • Laptop randomly switches off when on battery power.

When on battery power my HP DV3500EA laptop randomly switches off (this is only a recent problem). This is when there is still significant charge on the battery. This does not happen when on AC power. Once it has switched off, the laptop is able to be switched back on again and run normally until the next time it switches itself off. It doesn't shut down, it just turns off immediately as if the battery has run out. I have checked that it is not overheating - the CPU temp is generally between 40 and 50 degrees Celsius. I know this isn't a software problem because it does this on different operating systems (Windows Vista and Ubuntu Linux). I assume this means it must be a hardware problem, but I can't work out what it is or how to fix it.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

Exact same problem with my Envy 13 running with windows 7... any solution besides bringing the laptop back to the store?

My iPhone 3Gs randomly shutting off at any given moment. I could be in the middle of a text, a call, or doing some games and it'll just shut off.
Now here's the unique part. When I go to turn it back on, the apple loading screen pops up but it takes somewhere from 3-5 minutes for it to boot up. Then the lock screen with the time and whatnot shows up. From this point on, my iPhone has a chance to shut itself back down and I have to repeat the process over and over again. Most of the time the lock screen flashes and then goes straight to black (shut down) but sometimes I can make it a few menus before it shuts itself down.
The only way to keep the iPhone on is to plug it into a charger of any sort. I'm fairly certain it isn't a battery charge issue because this happens at any % of power and sometimes my iPhone can use up all of its charge and not have this happen while other times I can be at 90-100% and it could randomly shut itself down. What can I do in this situation if some has some solution to this problem please let me know on [email protected] Thanks!

Not sure if this Term is Relevant towards an iPhone but, my iPhone won't Post unless if it's plugged into a Charger.

  • My 13inch MacBook Pro randomly shut off and won't turn on

My 13 inch MacBook Pro will not turn on at all. It randomly shut off while I was using it and now it won't come back on. The light on the charger is faintly blinking... But it is no longer charging. I tried a different outlet, and a different MacBook charger... Nothing. The screen is completely black and none of buttons or keys are responsive. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but it seems that it shut off not even one second after I connected my iPhone to it via USB. I guess I should include that this was the first time my iPhone was connected to my MacBook since upgrading to ios 6.0. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you..

    jc1122,
by “boot” I mean “use as the disk from which OS X will be run”. At the moment, all that is known is that your computer won’t start from its internal hard disk; my suggestion is to see whether it is able to start from your grey Mac OS X Install DVD, which is bootable (i.e. able to be used a disk from which OS X can be run).

  • My iPhone 5s keeps randomly shutting off and restarting. It can either be in use or just sitting there and it will turn off. I can't figure out what is wrong.

My phone randomly shuts off. I will be in the middle of using it and it will completely turn off. I can also not have used it all night and I will pick it up and click the home button and then it will flash the apple restart screen. I'm not sure what is causing this as I have only had the phone for about two weeks. It's a little concerning and just wanted to see if anyone knew what it could be without me having to go into the Apple store.
    Thanks!

  • Machine randomly shuts off and then comes back on.

Hello! Basically whats happening is my computer randomly shuts off (No blue screen just powers off) and then immediately comes back on.
I am running three monitors and a single GPU.  This has happened in two different cities (I moved) I have the same surge protector - however, other things on the protector do not reset / go off (alarm clock no battery).
Here are the crash dumps that microsoft said happened. (I uploaded three different ones)

I'm a pretty avid builder but I'm a bit stumped with this issue. The machine will, at random, shut off completely (including lights) and then come back on, during normal activities and gameplay.
The temps do not appear to be reaching astronomic levels, maxing out at around 60-65c (cpu) and 45c for the GPU.
    Parts:
    cpu - i7 3960x (turbo enabled normal at 3.3, w/ turbo at 3.9ghz)
mobo -  MSI X79A-GD45 /// Intel DX79SI (have tried both, it still happens with either, MSI is a new board.
psu - 750 Antec Gold High Current Pro
gpu - MSI Lightning 680 (no OC)
    sdd - samsung 840 pro
    hdd - Black 1TB
    case - HAF 942-x
    cooler - x40 kraken
    ram - G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 32GB (DDR1600)
    Here's what I tried
    1. Bought a new motherboard (MSI $260) to see if the issue would go away. - Failed.
    2. Was able to reproduce the issue VERY quickly when using the OC Genie2 on the MSI board, with teh button pressed, I could boot up OCCT and have it reproduce the issue with the power-off in around 2 minutes of the test. - Failed
    3. Attempted PSU and GPU stress test with stock BIOS, tests ran 1 hr+ each with no issues.  Shut down my machine and restarted it this morning and the issue came back within 5 minutes of use just sitting at the Windows Desktop. - Failed.
    4. Turned the 32 GB of ram to 1600 and enabled XMP, crashed after 3-5 days.
    5. Attempting to test each DIMM individually.
    6. Issue happened again after about two weeks of not happening.
I've run OCCT for an hour with the "stock" bios and it didn't crash for an entire hour.  I've also attempted to use the "OC genie2" overclock function and that triggered a crash within 2 minutes of the run.
Can anyone give me some more things to try? I'm thinking its possible it could be the PSU, but after running OCCT PSU test for 30+ minutes it had no issues.
