Cq mini shuts down when applying slight pressure to left hand corner, left of the touchpad.

Compaq Mini CQ10-500EO PC, Windowa 7,
As topic says. When I lift the computer holding the left hand corner approx. 1 inch in from the left corner the computer shuts down. No error messages, it just loses power and reboots. What can it be?
//Terry

Have subsequently worked out that the problem vanishes when the mains power is available, so it is clearly a problem with either the battery or the connection to the battery. Gamble is wether buying a new battery would work or not I suppose.
Unfortunately he lives in the West Highlands so a computer retailer of any stripe is very difficult

  • Mac mini shut down when start

    Hi all,
My Mac mini doesn't want to start anymore ... I have run the Apple Hardware Test from the CD and all seems ok (all test are ok) but when I try to start on the hard drive, the mac mini suddenly shut down
Where it can comes from ? hard drive failure ? how can I diagnostic the issue ?
I am afraid to reinstall Mac OS X from the CD because I don't want to lose my date :[
Thanks in advance for your help and advices
    Victor

    Hi,
my Mini has been also suddenly shutting down. Power light goes off. Not at start-up. First it lasts longer, but gradually, as I restart it, it gradually takes less and less time to suddenly shut down. Or yesterday, for example, I tryied starting it up and not touching it. It lasted for hours. Thought it was cured. Then I popped a CD in and opened iTunes. Didn't take to long before it was shutting down all of a sudden. It would seem not to be able to take any activity. Here is a Console Message I run a few days ago:
(in the meanwhile I'll try Safe Mode)

  • Mac mini shut down when i power off my samsumg led smart tv

I'm new to mac mini. In fact Mac at all. I use my samsumg led smart tv as display using hdmi port # 4 in my tv. I have also other devices connect to my tv like my apple tv in hdmi also. I don't know why but when i power off my tv, my mac mini stop to work (like a shut down) and when i power on again my tv i must press the power button on my mac mini in order to use it again, it is no longer list in my listed sources on my tv. My apple tv don't have the same behavior, when my tv is back, I just have to select it again in my source list and it will be back there. Is there something I should change or know in order to have my mac mini always available. I'd like to be able to connect to it from other places using vnc, but right now it's always shutting down and even if I try to power on it after my tv close, it wont when my tv is power off. Somebody can help me? Thank you!

    Hi Linda,
Unplugging it from AC power will drain the PRAM Battery in short order, thereby losing setting, like Monitor resolution.
You can test the Pram Battery by disconnecting from the Internet so Date/Time doesn't update before you see it, shutdown, unplug AC for a bit, startup & check Time.
In Sys Pefs>Displays, can you set the resolution?

  • TS1368 When I am looking at iTunes on my PC, running Windows 7 (updates are complete), and click on the iTunes Store block in the upper left hand corner, I get the message that "iTunes has stopped working".  What can you suggest?

iTunes crashes when I click the iTunes Store block.  What can I do to get the iTunes Store to open on my computer running Window 7 (all updates installed)?  It used to work last fall but some update must have reset something or the newer version of iTunes omitted something that would allow access to the Store from a PC.

  • Mac mini shut down with USB and USB Over Current Notice

I just spent the day dealing with my mini shutting down when I connected my iphone.  If I left it connected at restart, I got the infamous USB Over Current Notice.  I tried all suggestions and finally used an apple connector instead of the one I had been using.  Everything OK again... Other comments?  It was very time consuming and frustrating.

Do you have other devices connected to USB ports ?
Try to connect with a powerde hub in between.

  • MacBook shuts down when not connected to power supply

Hey everyone, I'm making this topic for an issue that has gotten me edgy lately.
My MacBook (not new) has a habit on shutting down on me instantly for some reason when the MacBook is not plugged into charge. Here is the strange thing though, if I unplug the charger plug and set it still on my desk, I have more of a chance of the laptop not failing on me, but when I carry the MacBook around, it has a 90% (guestimate) chance of shutting down on me.
Even after having the laptop plugged in for 12 hours, the laptop just goes into suspend mode.
I have to wait a couple of seconds before I can turn it back on (by pressing the power button, not any key).
Also, when I shut down more programs at certain times when not plugged in, and having the screen brightness low, the Mac does not shut down so fast.
    Any advice?!
    Thanks

Could be you battery. Mine shuts down when showing 40% charge left and I have to plug it into the power supply to fix it. I found out it was the battery by downloading coconut battery. It's an application that allows you to check the status of your battery (Link at bottom). I suggest you get that and when your macbook shuts down again, plug it into the mains, start it up and run coconut battery. If it shows your nearly out of battery power then that's your problem.
I was showing 40% left when it shut down. Did the above and I had no power left. It happens when the battery is old about 250-400 loadcycles
    Hope this helps.

  • How come everytime my Mac shuts down, when I turn it back on ,Garageband has to Re-Download the program files?

How come every time my Mac shuts down, when Iturn it back on,Garageband has to Re-Download the program files?

Check this article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1547 and this one http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2341?viewlocale=en_US
If it sounds like a RAM issue it could be one of the RAM chips has failed. You could try removing the RAM one at a time and see if it starts with one still installed.

  • Should G5 shut down when it goes to sleep?

I bought this G5 on eBay for a song (and I've been singing ever since) .  It came without a disk, no accesss to the password and they had taken the Airport Card out.  (Specks say it comes with the APCard)  Serves me right I guess.  Anyhow,  It has always shut down right after it goes to sleep.  Is there anything I can do to stop this?  I work between two computers and sometimes I don't get right back to it.  Restarting all the time is a real annoyance.

OK, the answer to the main question is "no" it shouldn't shut down when it goes to sleep.  I would first open the Energy Saver panel in System Preferences and make sure that you have the machine set to never go to sleep.  Here is a Tiger screen shot of that panel:
That should solve your immediate problem.  The particular settings work very well for me, allowing me to put the computer to sleep from the Apple menu when I am not going to be using it for a while.  You might also want to take a look at the "Schedule,,," area in the energy saver panel, as in this picture, to see that nothing is selected there.
Now, if the machine actually shuts down when you command it to sleep, then there are other issues we can work on.

  • Shuts down when unplugged & moved/lifted/pressure applied

This is really weird for me. Just got my macbook a couple of months ago, refurbeished, first generation. Love it. Suddenly, the battery started giving me problems, and the machine would shut down when id unplug the magsafe usually. Sometimes it would stay on for a moment, until I tried to pick it up, open or closed, and it then shuts right down.
I read up on here, did all the software updates and stuff with no results, and took it into Apple. They checked it out, determined bad battery, and gave me a "fresh" one on the spot. Seemed to work fine at the store, they had me take it home. Dandy!
I get home and start charging it up. Seems alright. Next day , on "full charge" I go to take the machine to another room, and after a few seconds walking with it, shuts down. So frustrating. This seems to happen when ti computer is given very slight movement, and allllways when I try to pick it up from the bottom, applying pressure on the bottom of the case and or battery. This however, does not happen when the computer is running off of AC power, i can shake it and wobble it with no problems.
Aside from this, the "new battery" from apple seems quirky. Battery "health" in iStat shows only 86% while my original battery had 100% health even after 2 months use. Also, the machine has been intermittently not recognizing the battery, showing an X'd battery in the menubar, and then showing things like it will take 1423 hours to charge or i'll have 1456 hrs to use battery power, just a lot of quirky stuff that I never saw with my other battery.
I'm just getting concerned that this is potentially a problem with the machine itself, not the batteries. The only thing swaying me away from that thought is that i have no problem using the machine while plugged in.
Quite honestly, I don't always trust the "geniuses". Some seem sharp, some, much less so. I ask you guys first, before I go back tonight, what are your impressions on this problem? What are specific things I should be asking the "geniuses" tonight?
A laptop is useless to me if I can't actually move it around while running, I've gotta get this resolved, and I really dont want to ship my machine out.
Any questions I can answer about th esituation, let me know, and THANK YOU, in advance.

Very interesting. When I upgraded my RAM I had a load of trouble with that outer slot. The little "eject" bar swayed both ways and didn't really kick the card out, I eventually used a swall tweezer to help get it out. (I'd probably want to put the original Apple RAM back in there before bringing back to store huh?)
Anyway... it is infact right around that area where my fingers push up when I try to pick up the computer....this is all kind of making sense now. Being a refurb, also noticed a tiny screw was installed crooked behind the L bar, leading me to belive someone has already gone somewhat deep in there before I ever got the machine.... ****, I hope I didn't get a lemon macbook. discounteggroll, I'm in Westchester, NY. I have two Apple stores around me that I can get to fairly easily... we're you implying they might do it there?
Also, side question: If I did have to send my comp out for an extended period, would it be crazy to want to swap out my HD? I'm not really interested in people potentially going through all my personal stuff, y'know?
And again, it brings me back to the AC cord... would/could it really be a logic board issue, even if th ecomputer is fine while plugged in?
Thanks again for all your help

  • My new mac Mini (Feb, 2013) shuts down when we are listening to iTunes or Pandora.  Any thoughts?

After listing to iTunes or Pandora, our mini shuts down and requires us to log in again.  The mini was purchased in Feb of this year.  Any thoughts?

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Advanced... ▹ Log out after … minutes of inactivity: Off
If there's a closed padlock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane, you may need to click it to unlock the settings. Enter your login password when prompted.
Also check the Energy Saver preference pane for scheduled logouts or shutdowns.

  • Sound does'nt shut down when earphones are plugged in. Ipad Mini.

Sound doesn't shut down when earphones are plugged in. Same earphones used with other ipad or iphone give no problem.

might be a hardware issue with the headphone jack. Try cleaning it with a dry soft toothbrush to remove lint and dust.
    If that doesn't help:
Try doing a hard reset for the iPad: Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/wake button simultaneously for about 15 seconds and release when the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't solve the issue, you could also try backing up the device and restoring the device as new.
In that case, follow the steps in: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
NB: set up as a NEW device because a software issue will be in the backup. If the issue persists after restoring as new, you should offer the device for service.
If you get specific error messages/codes in iTunes when updating/restoring, check this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
If you're not able to restore the device, this one might help: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
Using that last article will erase everything on the device, so make sure you have a backup!
    Good luck

  • Why does Macbook Pro have gray "curtain"and msg to shut down when playing video online?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard v 10.6.8 and have put on all the security updates.
I bought this machine just days after the newest MBP's were released with Lion because I wanted to stay with Snow Leopard
From the very beginning I would have occasional "gray screens" with a message that I'd encounterd a problem and needed to shut down.  It always occured while I was watching a streaming video online (Flash?) but it didn't always happen.  I updated my Flash plugin and that seemed to help.  I use both Safari and FireFox and both are now updated to the latest versions.
I had also noticed via iCleanMemory that my memory availability was very low .....I always have many tabs open in my browsers and have backup software that backs up to online storage running and when I watched a video, it dropped to almost 0 and everything ran slow.  I had 4 GB Ram.
So, I ordered new ram and put that in and now have 8 GB.  Machine runs fast. Love it....except it keeps giving me that veil of gray and the message to shut down.  It happens several times a day now and while usually in conjunction with watching a video clip, it's not always the case.  But I have lots of available memory.  That wasn't the issue.
I found an Apple Support paper relative to needing a video update on some mid 2010 MBP's and downloaded it.  It won't install and says it won't run on my system so that didn't help.
I'm at my wits' end trying to keep this thing running.  Everytime I have to shut it down it means a minimum of 8 min...sometimes more.....before it will restart.  If I try to restart sooner than that, it begins to boot and then just has lines and lines of numbers and code running across it....and often continuous beeping sounds and I have to hold the button down to shut it off again.  If I wait long enough, it does boot back up and sometimes runs fine as long as I'm not watching video clips, a streaming tv show or clicking on a lot of links in web pages.
I don't believe it has shut down when I was doing anything that wasn't web related....i.e. on a browser. And, when I was running with only 4 gb ram, it rarely shut down, just ran very, very slowly.  Now with 8 gb ram it is speedy but doesn't seem to want to keep working!
Anyone have any ideas what I should try next?
    Thanks
    Paula

    Hi Allan,
    Thanks for your reply.
I have been closing iCleanMemory but the shut down (kernel panic) was still happening.  Not sure how to go about uninstalling it as it's one that runs at start-up and dragging it to the trash might not get rid of it completely.  I"ll find it's web site and see if they have any info.
Haven't checked your web link yet (it's late and gotta get to bed) but will do so tomorrow.
I also run Backblaze and DropBox that begin at startup and are constantly updating in the background, iStatMenus and Sharpshooter.
The kernel panics were happening....tho much less frequently.....before i put iClean Memory on.  If I remember right, I installed it just because I had those periodic shut downs and wondered if it was a lack of memory.  Because I then saw that memory was very low all the time, I decided I must need to put more memory in.  And that seems to have made the issue worse while also making the machine work faster for the time it is running.
Now, I've been working on here for a couple of hours and had no problem at all......but I haven't asked it to play any kind of video.  Before I quit for the night, I'll try to watch the last one I tried that caused it to shut down and see if it does it again.
I do appreciate your help as I have just enough knowledge about these things to be dangerous.

  • Computer shuts down when I click on the list or grid display button

I've uninstalled an reinstalled 3 times and instead of the computer shutting down when I start itunes as it was doing, it only does it when I click on the display as a list, grid or cover display button. However it seems to unistall some parts at the same time as I can't open it all afterwards (error message says its not installed). This started to occur after a couple of weeks of non use and when I last used it I purchased songs from itunes. I now have current version but didn't when it first statred to happen. Help!!

Okay ... we'd better have a closer look at the minidumps the PC has been producing to see if they can turn up any additional information on what we're dealling with here.
Open "My Computer", and see if you can find a directory called C:\Windows\Minidump. (That's where minidumps usually go on a PC, so long as the Systemroot hasn't been set to some other folder.)
If it's been collecting minidumps, there should be files in there with names like "Mini(number-numbers).dmp"
(If you have "Hide filename extensions for known file types" enabled in Windows, the ".dmp" extension may not appear on the dump files. The numbers in the file name will be different for each minidump, if minidumps are present.)
Once we've tracked down some minidumps, we can have a go at analysing them.
    1. Download and install the Windows debugging tools from here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspx
    2. Go to Start, All Programs, Debugging Tools For Windows, Windbg
Once you open Windbg, you will presented with a blank screen.
    3. Click on "File > Symbol File Path". Here you will enter the symbols
path. Symbols are needed to effectively debug.
    The path will be:
    SRVc:symbolshttp://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
    4. Enter in this path and click OK. Now, go to "File > Save Workspace"
so that your symbols path is saved for future use.
    5. Go to "File > Open Crash Dump" and load the file.
(An "Open Crash Dump" screen will appear ... doubleclick "My Computer", doubleclick "Local Disk", doubleclick "Windows", doubleclick "Minidump", and doubleclick on one of the minidumps in there.)
You will/should get a message to save base workspace information. Choose no.
Now you will get a debugging screen. It takes a little bit to run it,
as the symbols have to be downloaded as they are needed.
After the "bugcheck analysis" part of the screen comes up, look for the component that seems to be causing the crash. (It'll say "Probably caused by" ...)
Let us know the precise name of the component. (Include any file name extensions like .dll or .sys.)
If you can, have a look at several of your crash dumps. Are all the crashes being caused by the same component? If not, could you let us know the names of the various components being cited in the various crash dumps?
