CQ61 restore Bios from USB

I have a CQ61-429us that stopped working. When I power on I get all the lights, the HDD and CD drives spin, and sound like they are fine. I always have a black screen, so I tried hooking up to an external monitor, with no video signal even after function-F4. The lights will flash twice contiunally, from my reading I think that means no BIOS. I tried restoring the BIOS from  the HDD to no avail. Formatted an USB to FAT32 with volume "HP_TOOLS" and downloaded the BIOS unpacked to the usb Pressed the Windows + B button upon startup but no update. Am I missing something?
Thanks

Usually it is the cap lock and number lock keys that give the blink codes. Is this the keys that are blinking? I ask because you said you get 'all' lights after powering on.
Have you tried a hard reset? Have you tried removing 1 stick of memory at a time to see if it will boot?
******Clicking the Thumbs-Up button is a way to say -Thanks!.******

  • After restoring BIOS from USB still HP BIOS Utility starts

Hi guys, after a BIOS update my HP Pavilion 15-e026sl not boot anymore, it does the following scheme:
    I press the power button
Power, Bloc Maiusc and wifi lights and fan on but dark screen
2/3 seconds and everything shut down
The pc automatically reboot with bloc maiusc light flashing
HP Bios update starts with the need to recovery Bios because it's corrupted
Flash the Bios, but when verifying the bios flashed I got error
    Everything restart from point 4
So, I read on this forum and on the HP Support Center how to create the famous "HP_TOOLS" USB stick in order to restore the BIOS image. (With another pc) From the Support Page of my Pavilion 15-026sl I downloaded the latest BIOS update (F.23), I started the .exe file and I created the USB Stick choosing the correct option.
Then I put the USB on the Pavilion and with Win + B + Power combination the pc started to recover BIOS from USB, and this is the log that I extracted from the USB stick:

Download the current BIOS Rompaq on another Windows PC. Double click it to open it. Choose the" create a recovery USB flash drive to use on devices with corrupted BIOS." option
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-134117-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en...
Plug a 2GB or larger capacity flash drive into an available port
Once the recovery usb flash drive has been created, plug it into your pavilion 15 notebook and press the power button to boot to it and write a fresh bios rom file into the CMOS ROM to replace the corrupted one currently there.

  • Booting BIOS from USB doesn't work (890FXA-GD70)

    Hi all,
in case of BIOS crash, recent MSI motherboards should be able to boot using a BIOS provided from an USB pendrive. I have tested this function by calling it directly by BIOS option, but it fails after BIOS is loaded getting a blank screen (debug code: 09) or the monitor off (debug code: 31). Does any of you know whether the problem is fixable or any hints? Is it working to you?
    890FXA-GD70 (either BIOS 1.0 and 1.6)
Verbarim Store'n' go 4GB USB pendrive (tested with FAT32, FAT16 formats, partitions smaller, bigger... nothing)
BIOS save function doesn't work as well. Some bytes are different comparing the saved file to original one.

Quote from: Svet on 28-October-10, 21:37:53
it's probably m-flash issue, what's current bios version installed?
Yes, you can say: "Flash your BIOS to the last version released some days ago, and retry", but that is the last chance for clear reasons. The problem hasn't been fixed flashing from 1.0 to 1.6, and I guess likely this code with the bug is in non flashable part of BIOS.
I wonder whether Boot 2nd BIOS from USB Drive (or Backup BIOS to USB Drive) is working for someone, it looks impossible it is entirely broken...

  • How force load BIOS from USB thumb device

My BIOS firmware memory is damaged, I have all kinds of malfunctions described on this Forum. I have created a BIOS recovery USB device and I wonder if there is a possibility to configure the computer so that to load the BIOS, not Windows!, from the USB device that would be permanently plugged-in.Thanks!

    I use the
Windows USB/DVD Download Tool too to create the usb thumb drive. And I use the tool to copy the iso file there.
And when I use that drive on an older laptop runs windows 7. it works.

  • Restore SSD from USB Flash Drive Clone

    Hi,
My sister bought me a 512gb Samsung 830 SSD which I wanted to format using a 32gb USB flash drive which I'm using as a boot disk (Clone of my orginal hard disk using Carbon Copy). However, When I open up the Disk Utility and go to restore the SSD using the USB Flash drive I get an error "The startup disk can't be used as a restore source: To use this disk as a source, restart your computer using the recover system, and open the Disk Utility again." I've restarted several times but always get the same response. What am I doing wrong?

I figured it out, I actually needed 3 things:
    1) Carbon Copy Cloner
    2) 32GB San Disk Cruzer USB drive
    3) Plugable USB 3.0 HDD Docking Station
Step 1: Cloned my old hard drive and created image unto my desktop
Step 2: Format USB drive and restore USB flash drive using Carbon Copy cloner
Step 3: Shut down compter, remove usb drive and install ssd drive into computer               (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook-Pro-17-Inch-Unibody-Hard-Drive-Replacement/3 401/1)
Step 4: Install old hard drive into Plugable USB 3.0 HDD Docking Station
Step 5: Connect Plugable USB 3.0 HDD Docking Station with your old hd installed in it to USB port
Step 6: Start PC....allow the computer to book from the Plugable USB 3.0 HDD Docking Station
Step 7: Connect USB Flash drive to Macbook
Step 8: Open Carbon Copy Clone and restore the USB flash drive onto the ssd drive
Step 9: Once complete....shutdown macbook pro and disconnect both the USB flash drive and the Plugable USB             3.0 HDD Docking Station
Step 10: Turn on macbook pro, it should boot from ssd now (It's so freaking FAST!)

  • R & R problem restoring files from usb hard drive

First, I am new to the forum so forgive me ahead of time if I violate any rules...
    My probelem involves:
    Rescue and Recovery 4,21
    Thinkpad x61 Tablet
Vista Business 32 bit, Service pack 2
    USB hard drive
Here are the details - I restored my system from a backup (on a usb hard drive) using R & R. I chose the option to save the files that were created or changed since the backup to the usb hard drive. The restoration was successful (mostly - so far). However, I have been unable to restore individual files from the usb hard drive that I saved as part of the restoration process. I can see the files on the usb hard drive, but they do not appear when I attempt to restore them using R & R. How can I restore these individual files? Thanks in advance.

Mmm ok thanks I'll look I to that then. To be honest, HFSExplorer has been pretty good but sometimes doesn't work. So I'll check out what you suggested.
    Thx

  • Satellite A100 PSAA8E: Cannot boot from USB after Bios update

    Hi
I downloaded the latest bios (v6) for my satellite a100 (psaa8e) and after updating the old bios, I noticed I can't boot from USB. Is there a way to restore the old bios or will this problem be solved?
    Cheers
    mo

I used to press F12 after restart and choose from USB. After downloading the bios, the system refuses to boot from the USB (external CD drive). However, if I place the same CD into the unit's CD drive, and choose boot from CD after pressing F12, the unit boots fine. This only happened after the bios update.
    Thanx

  • System Restore from USB - problems

I just switched HDD with another macbook (a 2,1) and it works fine, now my HDD is in the 3,1 body. There was freezing from the off so I decided to restore (from USB - Snow Leopard) the system from time machine to nip any problems early on. The restore finished correctly, i reset, and it hasn't booted since. All I see is the Apple logo and the circular rotating 'busy' icon.
I checked my external HD on a different system to see if it had been corrupted - it hadn't.
SO I don't know what to do now. I think trying to restore again would make sense, but i'm not sure, and I cannot find how to access the restore USB either.
    Any advice or suggestions?

    mjf123098 wrote:
I restored from a liveUSB which I made,
    How did you make it?
thinking that it would have the same functionality as my original DVD however I don't know how to boot direct from USB so thats a problem.
See [Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1310].
When I restored I did did a full system restore from my last time machine backup - however I realised yesterday that this final backup was made on the system after I switched the HDDs so would just have compounded any errors already there. I should have restored from the last fully working backup, which was the one before that.
However this was onto a new machine, so you could be onto something there. I would like to re-format the HDD and then try to install from the last working backup however as the macbook does not now boot, and I have no CD to hand (waiting for that to get sent over here) looks like I am stuck for the time being.
    Is this a fair assessment?
    Maybe.
Both macbooks were running 10.6.6 the only differnce between being one is a 2,1 and the other a 3,1 version.
If they were both on 10.6.6, unless one was brand new (and might have been on a different build of 10.6.6), the problem isn't the wrong version of OSX.
It may be that a different Mac's backups were restored, but that usually doesn't cause such severe problems, especially on similar Macs. See [Mac OS X v10.6: Issues after restoring a Mac from a Time Machine backup made with a different Mac|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3243]. As noted there, the fix is to simply reinstall OSX from the correct disc, but you can't do that yet, either.

  • HP G72 - BIOS bricked - USB restore problems

    Hello!
I disabled "Virtualization" in my BIOS of my HP G72-a05SG. But after saving, it rebooted and the NUMLOCK and CAPSLOCK lights are blinking 2 times, so, according to this site, the BIOS is corrupt. And my HP_TOOLS partition doesn't exist on my hard drive.
So I've prepared my USB drive with "HP BIOS-Update (UEFI)" and "HP System Diagnostics (UEFI)" and followed the instructions of this. It doesn't recover from there, but the notebook's accessing the hard drive, the USB drive's beeing accessed all the time, but nothing happenes, no beep, no video output.
Is my notebook completely bricked, or did I something wrong?
Can somebody upload his/her HP_TOOLS partition from the hard drive so that I can try to recover the BIOS from there?
    I appreciate any help!

Fixed it myself using this wonderful guide (maybe this file naming tips are also useful). HP BIOS Update appeared and recovered the BIOS image from the stick. Yay!

  • K7T Turbo2 - how do I tell BIOS to boot from USB?

I have an old K7T Turbo2 system, and I'm trying to install Windows 7 on it.  I guess that's my first question - am I going to run into any nasty problems running W7 on this board, other than RAM limitations?  I have a version of "Tiny7" (which installs from CD-ROM) installed already and it seems fine, but I'd rather run a fuller non-pirated OS, and that means installing from a DVD/iso.  I don't have a DVD drive installed and it would be a bit of a pain to acquire one, so I'm hoping to boot from USB to winstall W7.
I have a PCI USB2.0 card installed in the system, which seems to work fine.  I've set the BIOS to boot from USB-FDD (but I've also tried USB-CDROM and USB-ZIP).  I have BIOS 3.6.  I've tried booting from the PCI USB2.0 hub (will that ever work or does the BIOS not recognize it?) and from the regular USB1 port on the mobo (but my USB flash drive is USB2).
Is there something else I need to do in the BIOS to get this to work?  Will it never work no matter what I do?
I read somewhere about a BIOS setting to "enable legacy USB support" but can't see anything like that in my BIOS settings.
    Any suggestions?  (thanks in advance)

If there is no option to boot from USB-HDD then it may never work.
Long shot I know, but what if you connect your USB drive, then power on your system, and press F11 when the logo/POST screen appears, does the drive show in the Boot Menu that appears?

Really? DVD drives are very common, and cheap as chips! You can pick up a brand new DVD writer, for the price of a (good) DVD movie.

  • Cannot Restore Image From External USB

    Hello,
I am trying to restore an image I made from a Surface Pro 2, a Windows 8, and a Windows 8.1 computer and I get the same results from all 3 computers.  The backup is successful on all 3 computers, but I am not able to restore the image.  When I
try to restore, Windows says it cannot find an image.  I tried it on an external Seagate 500 GB HD, an Hitachi 3TB external HD, a blank HD in a USB enclosure, and a Seagate 3TB external HD.   The only time Windows was able to see the image
was when I copied it to the Seagate 3TB drive.  Does there have to be something configured on the drive before Windows 8 can see the image?

  • Macbook Pro Won't Do Lion Restore From USB

    Hi Users,
I am exhausted. Graduate school is starting again. I have been to way too many forums and I am about to throw this piece of junk called a MacBook Pro in the trash and call it a lost. I will tell you why I am so frustrated:
    1. Wanted to reload Mac OSX + bootcamp to install W7. Did a bunch of things on another forum that just made things worse.
    2. Now my mac is so jacked up I am trying to do a OSX restore on my USB.
    Problem Description:
My macbook lion will not restore from the app store. I put the USB in the computer. I get to the restore Lion window and then it tells me that it will take 99
hours to reload. I do not believe it is even contacting the store. I don't want a bunch of nonsense about how my wifi isn't working or something like that.
I would like to know how to get into the terminal and just freaking reset everything so that even the lion restore on my USB would freaking work.
I am going to take this piece of crap into the store tomorrow, but I have to say, as a computer science major. This is a piece of ####. I can't believe I even
used to be a mac fan boy. This diskless stuff was a great idea, but makes doing major restores a pain. Also, I tried doing a disk DVD restore and even that is jacked up. Sigh...
Frustrated Geek. Thanks for your patience all. I am frustrated at the machine, but not you all.

Can you give some specifics about your situation.
Which MacBook Pro do you have? Did it ship with Lion or is it a pre-Lion model? Do you have the Lion installer on a USB key? Do you have a backup of your MacBook Pro data in case you need to reformat your drive? Do you have a fast internet connection?
What have you attempted so far to restore your OSX Lion partition?
Have you started up from the Recovery Partition? If so, did you have any success downloading Lion from the App store?
Users here are generally helpful if you can provide a little more information.

  • BIOS doesnt recognize SATA connected Hard Drive- need help flashing bios from bootable USB

    hi
I have an envy laptop running InsydeH20 bios rev f14.
the bios doesn't recognize the internally connected hdd/ssd.
I have heard that with insyde bios', sometimes you have to unlock 'secret capabilities' to recognize hardware incl internal hdd.
but I am just trying to reflash my bios.
the problem is that I cant get into windows because it doesn't recognize my hard drive and windows doesn't allow insallation to usb connected drives.
I downloaded the patch from hp.com for my product and it actually has an option for making a bootable USB for use on the actual system, and I did this. the instructions are to just restart my computer with the bootable usb. I have tried Legacy support on and off, neither updates bios.
I highly doubt it has anything to do with the physical sata connector.
basically I need to flash my bios from bootable usb. I have done some research about making a bootable dos usb etc etc but I don't know what program to even run and how..

    Thanks!!

    hi
I need to flash the bios of my system. the bios is not recognizing hardware and cannot boot into windows to run the bios flash for windows.
on my other comp I ran the bios update patch and chose ' install to bootable usb ' so that I could use it on my system.
cannot run on my laptop. tried booting from the media. tried allowing 'legacy' compatibility.
im running insydeH2O rev f14 right now.

  • BIOS FLASH HELP! (No option to boot from USB)

    All,
Before I get experimental (i.e. break everything), I was hoping to see if someone else has faced this problem yet.  I have one of the earliest to market nettop winds when Newegg put them on sale... so old, in fact, that the bios is 1.08 (zero, eight!).  As such, I realized I was running in USB1.1 and not high speed.  Turns out the bios from 1.2 - 1.7 support usb2.0 which would help me greatly with my external drives.
I followed the how-to and created a bootable flash drive, but I have no option in the bios right now to boot to USB.  Is there any other way (i.e. in Win7) to flash the Bios?
    Please help.
    Thanks.

Before you do anything, please check the BIOS Release Date and the BIOS ID String (e.g. A7418IMS). We have to be entirely sure we are talking about the right nettop and that proper BIOS Version.

Are you absolutely sure about this?  The data transfer rate does not exceed 1.43MB/s?  And this "slowness" never was a problem for you?
Please note that you have to load "Optimized Defaults" in BIOS Setup to make sure that the USB 2.0 controller is enabled.  It will not be enabled when "Failsafe Defaults" are loaded.
