CQ62-220US Laptop PC with Short DST Failed and hard drive replacement availability...

I posted this on the lockup/freeze forum and got absolutely no response so I am hoping I might get a little advice on this forum.
Got the following error...
FailureID  M4W4GF-55G5S1-XD003G-60T003
ProductID  WQ850UA#ABA
Short DST Failed
...and cant get it to boot up any more. From other similar posts I have read they all seem to indicate I
need a new hard drive but when looking at the HP replacement part numbers for this I got...
Part 599055-001 is no longer supplied. Please order the replacement, 603783-001
...and then I got...
The following part(s) you entered were not found or not orderable:
603783-001 (Part Not Orderable)
Does any 2.5" SATA drive work in this laptop or are there particular models or brands I need to avoid.  HP parts don't
seem to be an option.

Hi,
You are not restricted in any way to a particular HDD manufacturer, so for example, the drive on the link below is an of one that would be fine for your notebook.
500Gb Hard Drive
The procedure to replace the Hard Drive starts on Page 47 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.
Once done, simply use your Recovery DVDs to reinstall the Operating System on the new drive.
If you don't have your Recovery Discs, you can order a replacement set using the link below.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00810334&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en
If you have any problem with this link, order them directly from HP.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.

    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012)
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
    I've used 192.8 GB
Operating System: 10.10.1 (14B25) YOSEMITE UPDATE
I've been experiencing problems with my Macbook Pro shortly after the two year mark of when I've purchased it. There are a few things that are going on. I recently verified my Macintosh HD disk through disk utility and it stated in red that there was an incorrect number of file hard links & then error: This disk needs to be repaired and to restart and then press "R". However, everything before that seemed to have passed. I have everything backed up on an external hard drive and use the time machine frequently. Another thing that has been happening, usually when I'm opening one my adobe programs, is that my screen will go white for a minute along with unidentifiable pink glitchy shapes that don't move. My computer has not been running like it used to and is running slow, freezing, and periodically going white --- as I just mentioned before. I just know that something isn't it right. I've been having to restart my computer by manually pressing the power button more than I've ever had over the past two years. I always work on my computer on a hard surface in a cool area & my fans seem to behaving okay. I also recently installed the Yosemite update for the mac sometime during this past November too and noticed slower running speed, more freezing, and longer times to boot up afterwards. Please speak up if you're experiencing problems with your 2012 Macbook pro too and especially after downloading the Yosemite upgrade. I don't see how it's in any way acceptable that I should have to deal with issues pertaining to my graphics card. Sorry for this post being a little all over the place.

    Hello brousch,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I see that your Mac is spontaneously restarting whenever you see a certain animation on your screen.  This indicates your Mac is getting a kernel panic caused by that animation.  If you'd like to learn more about kernel panics, including how to troublshoot them, please take a look at the information in the link below.

  • Using iDVD 6 with an external burner and hard drive

Last year I bought a 12" iBook which, of course, didn't come with a Superdrive. It also came with a 40 gig hard drive.
I'm down to 10 gigs but have an external drive with plenty of space on it.
I just recently bought a camcorder and due to the lack of a superdrive I've been using a very mediocre third party app on my Windows laptop to create DVDs.
I would like to use iMovie and iDVD to create my DVDs and am wondering if it is possible to daisy chain an external firewire hd and an external firewire DVD burner to accomplish this?
Alternatively, how much below 10 gigs can I go on my internal drive before I start running into virtual memory problems as some of these projects get kinda of large.

I have a setup similar to the one you are
contemplating: IBook with external LaCie DVD burner
and a LaCie external HDD connected to that.......
Note: do not burn directly from iDVD with this setup.
Instead use iDVD's "Save as Disc Image" option (File
    Save as Disk image).
    hope this helps
    mish
I'm guessing you haven't been able to do a DL disc image either. (Assuming you've tried.)

  • Has anyone had trouble with safari after having their hard drive replaced?

I received an email about the recall on hard drives for the iMacs and took it to my local apple store to have it replaced.  I brought it home today and started it up to find safari will not open.  Whenever I try to use safari it brings up a prompt saying safari quit unexpectedly and I can either click "ok" or "reopen". When I click "reopen" it only brings back the same prompt.
I called the apple store and they redirected me to the apple phone support number.  Apple phone support would not let me speak with someone without paying twenty dollars.  I am not about to pay for problems caused by apple's faulty parts.  I called the store back and I am currently waiting to hear back from a manager.
Any trouble shooting ideas would be much appreciated!!!

I had my HD replaced under the recall program. I am running 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.7 on a 2.8GHz iMac.
I haven't noticed any significantly different behavior of Safari since having my HD replaced and using Time Machine to restore my data. The only thing I've run across in about 2 weeks is that Safari's Preferences panel takes a bit longer to load than I remember.
One thing you can try is launching Safari from your computer's main Applications folder. If it still crashes, you can also try downloadng a fresh copy here: http://www.apple.com/support/safari/
Have you ever checked out Firefox? I personally like it better than Safari because it offers more security options, such as greater control over cookies, and supports many useful privacy and security plugins.

  • I get a "Short DST" failed error when running test. Laptop will not boot up. Any ideas?

I get a Short DST failed error when I ran a test.  The laptop won't bootup. All I get is a black screen

    Hi,
Certainly, the error code will be a Smart or Disk Self Test failure - in either case, it would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with the start-up issue.
One possible way to try and retrieve your files from a non-booting drive is to follow the process detailed in the link below.  The Ubuntu operating system CD you create can run from the CD alone ( ie it doesn't have to install on the Hard Drive ) and I've often found it to be successful in retrieving data even from a failing Hard Drive.  When you've created the CD, follow the instructions and see if you can back up your existing files.

Hard  Disk can't be read anymore.
    Failure ID: MC05BK-6KP7H9-MFPWW1-60VN03
What does this ID exactly mean?
I know so far that the hard disk has to be replaced. But as usual there is unsaved data to be rescued ...
One year warranty by HP has expired but there still ist two years German "Gewährleistung"

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails with a 24 Digit Error Code "MC05BK-6KP7H9-MFPWW1-60VN03" that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue
This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc..
HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby
Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive
Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:
Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power Adapter
Step 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 Seconds
Step 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)
Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal
If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook
If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media)
Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. • HP Pavilion g6-2230ew Start-Up Test and Hard Disk Short DST: Failed

    Hello community,
As you can see, my notebook model is HP Pavilion g6-2230ew.
I bought it one year ago, and it keeps freezing and hangs for about few months.
I've searched what i could do and I did a Start-Up Test to check if its the hard disk problem.
The result was that everything passed, but hard disk short DST failed.
I saw replies for similiar problem with other HP notebooks and solution was a new hard disk.
My warranty is still actual, but I want to ask if there is any other solution than exchanging my hard disk, and if that's what I should do - how long I would have to wait for such service.
    Looking for reply.

Well the hard drive has to be replaced and it sounds like it is overdue. The ordinary means to do that under warranty is to send the laptop to a Service Center. We have heard that, sometimes, when the moon is full and the Call Center rep is in a good mood, they will send you a hard drive, charge your credit card 2 or 3 times what it is worth at retail and refund when you return the defective drive. But that is purely a matter of grace and they do not have to do that. Turn around time varies all over the map from 3 working days to a couple weeks or more and there is no way to predict. A hard drive replacement should fall at the low end of that range since they should always have hard drives for replacement and it is a very easy fix.
On hard drive replacement under warranty, given that a new hard drive is well less than $100, I might be tempted not to lose 4 or 5 days' use of my laptop and come out of pocket myself but that's me and your cost/benefit analysis could be different and likely is.
They will return it to you restored to factory specs and will make no effort to preserve any of your data. When I do send them in for repair I always try to image the drive, if it is not too dead.

  • Short DST: Failed

    Hello,
    I have a HP laptop with windows 7 (64-bit):
    Model: HP G62 Notebook PC
    System ID: 1444
    Product ID:  XA505UA#ABC
Procceser Type: AMD Athlon(tm) II P320 Dual-Core Procceser
    Memory Size: 3072 MB RAM
    So here is my story:
A month ago I turned on my laptop and in the middle of my work the screen will go white and make an eerie sound constantly until I turned it off. A month later I turned my computer on and it went to a black screen and said: Error with Hard Disk. I shut my computer off, hopping it was just a glitch and the next day I turned it on it shut off without warning at the HP symbol when starting it up. Now I have to continusly turn it on like at least 20 times for me to get to the disk error reading so i quikly press F2 and did some tests.
I did a HARD DISK TEST and it is saying :
    Testing Drive: 1
    SMART Check: PASSED
    Short DST: FAILED
    FAILURE ID: MC44RW-OO07JT-XD003G-60U203
    PRODUCT ID: XA505UA#ABC
I went to BIOS management and did a BIOS Rollback to F.00 hopping it would fix it but it did not do anything. I did battery test and it said: Primary - Replace (40) Secondary - NOT INSTALLED (60) and displayed same faliure id and product id
Can you plz help me without buying a new HARD DISK

    Hi,
Sadly to say: most of the time the 24 char failure id indicates the HDD is failing and need to be replaced. Is it still under warranry ? If Yes, please call HP for a replacement.

  • Hp dv3 "short DST: failed"

    Hi.
I have a pavillion dv3-4050ea laptop which has recently died.
I have tried to use the system restore function, but that fails mid way through.
Another posting on here led me to press f2 on startup and run the startup test which concludes with a short DST failed message.
Does this mean that the HDD is dead?
Can i replace it with any HDD? or does it have to be a HP HDD?
In the meantime I have ordered the restore disks from HP, which I'm currently trying to install, but i'm keen to know what the significance of the short DST failed message is.
Thank you in advance for your time.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    H,
The full message may be a set of letters. Anyway:
    1. Most likely the HDD is dead (over 90%),
    2. You can buy HDD from other vendor(s), HP also use HDD's from other vendors such as WD, Hitachi, Seagate ... for many laptops and desktops.
    Good luck.

  • Hard drive failure message, and Short DST fail

    Hello, and thanks
alright, this is the first time i have had this issue.
only thing on the computer that was changed recently was a windows update yesterday, it came up automatically, shut the computer down, and restarted automatically. Java has wanted to update for a couple days
if its worth anything, the error came up when i was watching instant streaming on netflix.
half a year old (maybe) Pavilion dm1
    windows 7 64 bit
    AMD E-350 precessor
    product ID 00359-OEM-8992687-00010
gave me a warning message that hard disk drive failure was eminant, and adviced me to back up everything. computer seems to be functioning normal other than the error/warning message.
when i restarted the computer and ran the test that comes up i ended up with this, it says it may take over an hour, but this comes up after about a minute.
    testing drive : 1
    SMART Check: Passed
    Short DST: Failed
    Failure ID: 9LNF2M-5K55RT-MFH14J-60WA03
    Product ID: XY961UA#ABA
    Hard Disk 1
not sure where to go from here with it.
only other thing i have had happen with it is video driver crashes when i have a stale youtube video left in a tab. i assume that is unrelated, and i just trained myself to avoid that.
    thanks! i appreciate the help.
    matthew

    Hello Frederic45.
You need to replace your hard drive.  You should be able to purchase the parts on the notebook's HP Parts Surfer Page.
Had you previously created any Recovery Media such as a thumbdrive?  Without this you'll be unable to reinstall the operating system when you replace your hard drive.  You'll need to contact HP Support in order to get one of these kits.  The number for US/Canadian customers is 1-800-474-6836.  If you're in another part of the world you'll need to visit HP Support Worldwide to get your region's contact information.
Please click the white star under my name to give me Kudos as a way to say "Thanks!"
Click the "Accept as Solution" button if I resolve your issue.

  • My late 2009 iMac 27 inch hard drive just failed and is being replaced. It did not qualify for call back but I am wondering if there is others with similar issue

As I stated my late 2009 iMac 27 inch hard drive failed and is being replaced.. I am being charged as machine does not qualify for the call back program..call backs are on 2011 machines.. However i am in shock that my segate internal iMac hard drive failed in less than two years.. are there others with similar issue? Also when I get machine back will new hard drive be stable .. How do I make sure my working environment is reliable.. I have all my data and work backed up and will be able to rebuild my system but I really do not want to have to go through this down the line again.

Just to update everyone and maybe help people down the road .... It has been a week of **** .... I may have finally solved a problem that I have seen a ton of people in all different types of discussions around the world having trouble with ...... I am going to upload some pictures of what I was getting in the beginning and it came out of no where .... I had the random pixel problem with my display and to make a long story short I came across an article two days ago regarding internal temperatures and fan speed ...... I kept reading about apples approach which is not the point  .....  More importantly I dug deeper into temperature control and fan settings .... I discovered all kinds of software and there is only one in my eyes that can help anyone dealing with this display problem .... I will be honest,  I do not have the money right now for anything extra and am barely getting by and that is why I kept at it ... I figured keep trying different things because  a repair is out of the question ... http://www.crystalidea.com/macs-fan-control   -   This program has solved my problem - I get to adjust three internal temperatures inside my Imac and slowly but surely as the temperatures remained constant the display is fine .... Like new again .... I cant believe it ..... Turns out the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB graphics card gets very hot causing it to not do what it is supposed to   ..... Anyone that has any questions do not hesitate to contact me ...... I am going to upload some pics .... They are not that clear but if you are going through this you will recognize the images for sure - There was   so many more variations but this should help out - Thanks to everyone that takes the time out to help people on this support site .... • How to access my website created with iWeb after hard drive replacement

I recently had my hardrive fail and it was replace with a new one. It just happened to be the only computer I used to create and update my website. I lost some photos that are on my website, but there are 1 or 2 photo pages that I can't download them back to my computer from. Is there another way to get them from the .mac server to my computer? I hesitate to create a new iWebsite for fear of losing the one that has the photos I want. Thanks

You should be able to access any of the files on the Idisk.
You will need to construct a new site and in the future you should backup the "domain" file located in your user library/application support/iweb.
If you had that file you would not have lost anything.
