CR 2008 SP1 FAILS !

Question

When I run CR 2008 the Update Manager comes up telling me there CR 2008 SP1 is available.  I download, and attempt to install it.  It runs for quite a while, and then it pops up asking my to provide the location of CrystalReports.msi file.  I do not know where the file is because this is supposed to be an automated update, so then I MUST cancel the update.  The same thing happens every time.  So I have given up on SP1.

Hi Jim,
When it tells you to find the updated MSI do you browse to where you clicked the setup.exe and folders and look for the Crystaleports.msi file? We do have one and I believe it's in the Packages folder. You could also try double clicking the MSI file and not use the setup.exe
Another important part is you must be logged in as a local PC Administrator or have the same rights. ANother option is to right click on the setup.exe or CrsytalReports.MSI and select Run As Administrator.....
I believe what is happening is either you don't have full rights to install or some other windows registry is telling the installer to use some old MSI in some old location which no longer exists. I've seen this happen before and the fix was a windows registry change but I don't recall now where Windows keeps the Programs Installed in their registry tree.
I'm not sure how well you know Windows and the registry but if you are willing, and the USUAL warnings about making any registry changes, you could try searching for that location Windows is saying the msi file cannot be found at and see where in the registry is found.... Then delete the reference to Crystal Reports. But be careful, you should un-install CR so there should not be any left over registry entries. Or as much as the MSIExec ( Microsoft's installer ) will clean up.
There was a few post in forums on others how found "left over" installs that were not cleaned up properly and causing this same type of issue. I don't recall the post or what to search on now, just that I remember seeing something like this. And it may not resolve your problem.
Do you have another PC you could test this on?
Another option is to open a cmd window, CD to the location CR install is and then turn on install logging. Search Microsoft's site on how to enable MSIEXEC install logging.
