CR 8.5 to CR2008 migration problem

Question

I want to move from CR8.5 to CR2008.   I downloaded the trial and some reports will not work.  I get the following error:
Failed to retrieve data from the database.  Details:  42000[TopSpeed Corp,][TopSpeed ODBC Driver] Expected lexical element not found: <identifier> [Database Vendor Code: 1015]
This only occurs on some reports and it appears to be the reports with more tables.  
One one report I got a similar error "Unexpected extra token".  I changed my join from INNER to LEFT OUTER and it cured the problem.   The same action does not cure the reports with the other error.
I read and performed SAP note 1212698 - How to resolve join syntax errors in Crystal Reports to no avail.
Any help would be appreciated.   For someone wanting to give SAP money you would think they would have actual support.   I am not impressed.

Cause
This message occurs for one of the following reasons:
u2022 The data source required by the report is unavailable or improperly configured on the machine that is
processing the report.
u2022 The database server required by the report is unavailable.
u2022 The database client is installed but improperly configured on the machine
that is processing the report. For example a DB2 database alias, Oracle
tnsnames entry, or Sybase DSEDIT entry is missing or improperly configured.

Ensure these scenarios are true:
u2022 The data source required by the report is available and properly configured
on all machines where the report can be run. For example, the ODBC
data source or JNDI data source exists and connectivity can be proven
from a client test tool.

can be proven from a client test tool on all machines where the report
can be run.
Failed to retrieve data from the database.

Cause
The report SQL queries that have been sent to the server cannot be executed,
because an error was returned by the database server after it processed the
queries. For example, a field/table/procedure required by the report is missing,
or the queries contain syntax errors.
Action
Ensure the report is using the correct connection information. For example,
the data source name, server name, database name, and user name are
correct.
In a database-client test tool, ensure that the fields, tables, and procedures
used by the report exist and that SQL queries can be executed against them.
In the Crystal Reports designer, verify that the SQL query, as shown under
the Database menu Show SQL Query option, does not contain syntax errors.
If the SQL query shown in Crystal Reports is valid, execute the same SQL
query through a database-client test tool.
