Cr2 files problem

Elements 9 will open cr2 files created with my Canon EOS20D but will not open those cr2 files created with my Canon EOS5D mark iii.  The error messages says it "cannot open because it is the wrong type of file."

The "current version".  Does that mean updating Elements 9 or does that mean the newest version of Elements?
No it means you need to download a file from here:
<http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5519>
and to watch this video:

to know what to do.
Good luck and post back.

  • Canon G9 CR2 File Problems

I'm running into some troubles with this combination of CR2 files from the Canon G9 and using Lightroom 1.3 or Photoshop CS3.
When I import the files from the camera using Lightroom's import function (and yes, I have the 4.3 camera raw update installed), Lightroom brings over both the .jpg and the .cr2 files (so far, so good) but then I run into problems.
First problem: The .CR2 files have improper white balance set on them. catastrophically so, as I'm using the camera for infrared shots and without the original white balanace settinsg taken at the time of shooting the shot is useless. The .jpg's are fine, but obviously lack the full details of a raw file, which I would prefer to work with.
Second problme: When I right click on the .cr2 image in Lightroom and choose to edit it in Photoshop, the result is that Photoshop opens the file as a Tiff image and I never get the opportunity to use the Camera Raw loader settings for the raw image in photoshop, which are fairly important to me.
Third Problem: If I open the image directly in photoshop, it will initiate the Camera Raw 4.3.1 loader (a good thing) but still has the color balance issues. And for an instant when the file loads in camera raw 4.3.1, a triangle warning sign shows in the upper right corner of the picture then dissappears. I have tried using the Adobe RGB, Colormatch, ProPhoto and sRGB settinsg, 8 and 16 bit, all to no avail, I still lose the white custom balance as shot.
Any help on this would be very much appreciated, I've thus far been totally unable to work with raw images from the G9 regardless of what versions of the various software and tools I have loaded.

Hi, thanks once again for responding.
My dilemma is that the final results of an artifically induced white balance through channel switching won't give the same results as the false color image produced when the original white balance is done on-site using the non-IT filtered color metering system of the camera. It can give an approximation, but it will lack in a great many nuances.
IR images taken using the Canon G9 produce correct .JPGs, but the processing of the CR2 files by camera raw is flawed in the way that it is handling the white balance settings in the CR2 it seems. Images produced by other camers such as our Nikon D80 or others that use formats other than CR2 come through perfectly. Only the CR2 images are incorrect. This may be linked to the use of custom white balances instead of standard white balance settings, perhaps something in the file contents identifying which white balance (the camera has approximately eight) is being used and should be processed. Or perhaps the file itself is being incorrectly produced by the camera. Who know, eh?
I know the CR2 format in the G9 is relatively new and full support will come in time, but I'd hoped that it was some obscure setting that could get us back on track. In the meantime, we are using the .JPG images from the G9, which come through correctly processed. But this is sub-optimal, and one of the primary reasons for settling on the G9 was to have the raw images. Afetr all, how many 12MP compact cameras out there produce raw image files, eh? :)
If nothing else, perhaps this conversation will prompt some research and eventually correct processing of CR2 will emerge.

  • How do I resolve CR2 files problems in Photoshop CS 5.1 ?

When I try to open or download CR2 files in Photoshop Ce 5.1 or Adobe Bridge it causes the program to shut down.

There's a whole lotta forums for ACR/ PS/ Bridge. Ask there and provide more exact info like where those CR2 files are coming from and on what system you work.

Were you experiencing this message prior to removing Photoshop CS5 Extended?  If not what prompted you to reinstall?  Finally what version of Windows are you using?

  • Import Problem - CR2 Files

In the past I have been able to import CR2 files into Lightroom 3 by having the program convert to a dng and then import.
I can no longer import any files into LR3. The import seems to be happening and then a box comes up at the end stating "some import operations were not performed - the files could not be written." When this happens none of my files are imported into LR3.
I have not changed anything I am doing. This first started in the middle of an import where 7 of my 100 pictures were important and the rest could not be imported. Since then I have not been able to import any files.
I am running LR3 on a Mac and am up to date with the LR3 software updates.
    Suggestions?

Your Lightroom preference file may be corrupt. Try deleting it to see if that cures the problem. Details on where to find the preferences files are provided at http://forums.adobe.com/thread/358041?tstart=0

  • Problem with cr2 files

    Hi,
I have a problem with some cr2 files.
If I download the files from my camera to my computer, preview displays them fine, but if I add some meta-data to the files (GPS coordinates) they result corrupted according to preview, but are being opened by photoshop or photomechanic without any problems. Do you know if there is any workaround for this? I'm planning to upgrade to a MBP and to Aperture, and this might be a huge problem for me.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Problems with opening Canon 1ds III .CR2 files in CS 3

I have just purchased Photoshop CS3 student edition. However, when I try to open .CR2 files from my Canon 1ds III, a message stating that Photoshop "could not complete my request as it is not the right kind of document" appears. Whilst I can get round this by saving from DPP (which does not allow me to transfer the .CR2 files directly to Photoshop) as TIFF, this is quite slow.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Help on finding a cure would be much appreciated.

    Stephen,
Make sure you've got the latest version of Camera Raw. The package you have is probably compiled before the Mk3 was out.

  • Stange whitebalance problem with CR2 files

    Hello
Ive been taking som underwaterphotos with my canon 50D. Now it seems there are some problems with ACR ability to interpreting the CR2 or DNG file.
The pictures have green tint I am unable to get rid off.
If I process the CR2 file in canons DPP converter, everything looks perfect.
I have no idea why this is. Any help would be much appreciated.
Heres a link to a CR2 file for you to have a look at.

    And heres a DNG:

Ive posted this problem in lightroomforums but it seems this is an ACR matter.

    Thanks for ur help

That was a quick and precise advice, Ian
I've tried what's described in tutorial 4 and it works perfectly. Just reference the exported Camera Profile (e.g. "Canon EOS 50D Underwater") in LR and you're able to do the WB adjustment in LR.
BTW: DNG Profile Editor can be downloaded from here.

  • Windows 8 Elements 11 Problem with DNG and CR2 files

Have a Windows 8 machine with Elements 11 which has Camera Raw 7.4 installed and showing correctly in the editor. The Browser shows thumbnails of the DNG and CR2 files, but when an attempt is made to edit them, the editor opens but does not open the file. Same thing happens if I try to open the file using the File Open from the menu.
Also I have been through the help and forums and found an article about opening jpeg files as Camera Raw files (http://blogs.adobe.com/pselements/open-jpeg-files-in-adobe-camera-raw-in-photoshop-element s/) and this does not work either.
    Help please !

Disclaimer:  The following applies to WINDOWS EXPLORER.  I don't use Bridge so I don't know if it's applicable at all to Bridge.
Adobe does not provide a codec for viewing Canon raw files as thumbnails.  Canon has one for free but it only works on a 32 bit Windows system.
Early this year I found a free download for displaying raw file thumbnails that works on an x64 Windows system.  Since that time the author realized there's a real demand for this software and has started charging for it.  In any case, I find it works very well.

  • Problems with converted .CR2 files to .dgn on Mac Snow Leopard

    Hi,
I'm trying to convert .CR2 files from my Canon 70D into .dng files so that I can use them in Adobe Bridge CS5. I have been able to convert them using Adobe DNG converter 8.2 but under the file's info I see "Dimensions 0x0". I don't understand why this is happening or how to change this so that it reflects the correct size of the image. Also, I am not able to see thumbnails of the images once they have been converted, and again can't understand why.
Can anyone suggest what I'm missing here?
I have converted photos previously to .dng and they are visible as thumbnails on my mac and the dimensions are shown in their properties so can't understand why this is happening with this new set of photos.
    Thanks

Are the dimensions those of the embedded preview?  Check to see what size of preview you have set in the DNG Converter options.  Perhaps it is set to None.

  • New to Lightroom, problem importing raw CR2 files.

I am new to Lightroom and am having trouble importing my CR2 raw photo files. In the "import" section I select my SD card that contains the raw image files. All .jpeg files on the card show up as thumbnails but the CR2 files show "preview not available for this file." I select one of the CR2 thumbnails anyway, select a destination folder on my external hard drive and click "import." A window pops up that says, "this file is not recognized by the raw support format in Lightroom." I'm using Lightroom 4.4 and am working with a Windows Vista operating system (on an old, junky laptop). My camera is a Canon 70D and am shooting in RAW+JPEG. I also downloaded the Adobe .DNG converter 6.3 to try to convert the files before importing them into Lightroom and it is also not recognizing and importing my CR2 files. Not sure what to do at this point. Any suggestions?

I would recommend downloading DNG Converter 8.2 which is compatible with Vista.
The latest version 8.6 requires W7 or W8

  • Problems with opening Canon T4i CR2 files in elements 10

I have a cannon rebel T41 and Adobe elements ver 10, ive been taking photos in RAW format but cannot open them in the elements software, the files are saved as a CR2 file can anybody help please.

The T4i was first supported by ACR 7.1.  The last ACR version supported by PSE10 is ACR 6.7.
This means you need to update your PSE to 11 or 12 to work with T4i CR2 files.  Or maybe buy Lightroom, which is about the same price as Elements but contains all the raw adjustments not just the few in the Element’s-hosted ACR plug-in.

  • Problems with Canon 7D .cr2 files

Hello, this question may have already been asked but I have been unable to find an answer -- if it is in another discussion, please feel free to direct me there.
I have .cr2 files from a Canon 7D that produce significantly different results in Lightroom 3.3 versus Canon's Digital Photo Professional (3.7.1.1) software -- that is, the LR3.3 results show much poorer quality than DPP, with terrible grain throughout. There is also a significant color shift. These results carry through to output files (e.g. 16-bit TIFF, no compression), rendering Lightroom essentially unusable for developing my RAW .cr2 files, since they are not being rendered at highest quality.
Here is a 1:1 comparison below. This image below is a more extreme example to demonstrate the issue, shot at ISO 3200 f/5.6 1/100 sec.
And, albeit slightly more subtle, the grain is still clearly present in images shot at ISO 100.
I previously used ACR in CS4 to review my .cr2 files when I purchased my 7D fall 2009, but found the grain so distracting that I switched to DPP with much cleaner results. I chalked the grain in ACR up to an early pass at reading the 7D .cr2's. When upgrading to LR3 I expected the render to be better refined, only to find it as bad as ACR CS4.
If the grain is a permanent fixture of .cr2 RAW files in the ACR engine, LR3 is pretty much worthless to me. I had hoped to be able to quickly catalog/review and develop using the LR interface, instead of manually cataloging images, then going to DPP for TIFF output, and then Bridge/ACR for development.
Any insight or advice on a good fix would be much appreciated.

What noise reduction are you applying in LR?
LR's noise reduction in LR 3 is just about the best I have ever seen and certainly far superior to anything in DPP. If you are just looking at the initial preview then only a minimum amount of colour noise reduction and no luminance noise reduction is applied by default, where as DPP applies considerable noise reduction based on in camera settings. LR previews will not match DPP's inital previews of the files, but the tools in LR enable you to produce far better final results.

  • Problems opening CR2 files in CS2

I have CS2 and have always been able to open the RAW files produced by my OlympusC5050. I now have a Canon S95 and photoshop will not open the CR2 files it produces. After some research I downloaded a DNG converter and used this. However, the results are far from good, resulting in a very grainy picture.

    Hi Jane,
Your asked about why the Canon S95 is noisier than the Olympus C5050.   There seem to be several factors:
First, there are more pixels on the S95 sensor, so each pixel is a little smaller, and a single stray electron of noise is a higher percentage of the maximum pixel value so each extra electron of noise will show up a little more prominently; however, I think there are more important differences between your green-water Olympus shots and your blue-water Canon shots:
Because the eye is most sensitive to green, camera sensors are designed to have twice as many green pixels as red or blue, so your green shots will have much finer detail that will obscure noise.  Furthermore, when you white-balance from a mostly blue shot to one that has more red, there is very little red to begin with so any noise in the red is magnified by several times, and likewise with the blue, although maybe not quite as much.
If you have a blue shot or a green shot with both cameras, then it would be easier to tell how much of the increase in noise is due to the color of the light and how much is something else.
Anyway, I did test to see if the DNG Conversion using ACR 2.4 compatiblity had anything to do with anything, and it does not appear to change how the image looks, so that is not a factor.
The main issue is that you're using CS2 and ACR 3.x which has the original (and worst) Adobe raw-conversion algorithm, now known as Process Version 2003.  There have been two Process Version since then:  Process Version 2010 increased the resolution of the raw conversions significantly as well as changing how sharpening and noise-reduction work in general and Process Version 2012 added a new way of toning (lighten/darken/contrast/etc) the images that is easier to use once you get used to it.
To demonstrate the difference, here is a side-by-side that shows the way CS2 does things at the left and the way the newer ACR 7/8 or LR 4/5 way on the right, where you'll see a coarser texture and more noise using the CS2 way and a finer texture and less noise using the newer methods---click on the embedded image to see it larger:
In my opinion, the noise in the lefthand image is too much, still, and the noise in the righthand image is suppressed too much, but I wanted to show what 50% slider values would do in each case.
Regarding your computer and version of LR.  From Googling the brand and model number you gave and finding a 2011 used-computer-for-sale listing with system specs, it seems like your computer is a Core2Duo with a 1.8GHz processor and 1 or 2 GB of memory, and you said it has Vista.  The newest version of LR you can run on Vista is LR 4.x that might still be available on Amazon (in the US at least), but you'd be much happer with a much newer computer and either LR 4 or LR 5 on it.  Like some sort of i5 or i7 quad-core with at least 8GB of memory.  It'd be a few hundred dollars and a bit extra if its a laptop instead of a desktop with the same abilities.  Make sure you get one with a screen size of at least 768 or maybe it's 800 or 900 pixels high, so you can see all the buttons along the bottom.
While you're thinking about that, if you want to test how your current computer would work with the most recent LR that will run on it, you can download the LR 4.4.1 update and run it in trial mode for 30 days, by which point you'd either need to buy it or abandon it.  Here are the LR download links for Windows -- click on the LR 4.4.1 one:

  • Problem Converting Canon CR2 Files to DNG

I am currently on holiday, shooting photos with my Canon 70D in raw (CR2), and I have my Macbook Air with me, with Lightroom 5.4 installed on it.  After each day's shooting, I have been putting the flash card from the camera into the laptop, and downloading the photos using Lightroom, converting the CR2 files to DNG in the process.  This was working fine until a couple of days ago when suddenly, Lightroom has decided that it can no longer do the conversion.  It displays the photos on the card, it allows me to choose the ones I want to download, and then it tells me that it cannot convert/download them because it cannot read the files.  Well, if it cannot read the files, how can it display them so that I can make my choices?  And why, after working successfully for weeks, am I suddenly getting this error message ... nothing has changed in my hardware or software in either the camera or computer.  Any and all help would be most appreciated.  Thank you!!

Thanks very much for the answer, but I'm afraid it is not very enlightening ... at least to someone like me.  I do not understand where I would look for a write permission issue ... especially since nothing has changed (as far as I know).  Can you give me any further help?  Thanks!
