CR52 disk indicator light

I've just installed a new CR52 CDRW. I used live update to get the latest BIOS. I understood that the indicator is supposed to stay on when a CD is in the drive - this does not work for me. The light works normally when the drive is reading etc.
Model MS-8352M
Firmware v3.70

The white LED is not a disk activity or power indicator.  MacBooks don't have either of these.  The indicator will only light as mentioned by Dave Stowe... when your display is asleep it will come on and when your system is asleep, it will pulsate.  From what you have indicated, it seems to be working correctly.

Hard disc indicator light on right front of laptop lights only periodically at startup or restart.  There appears not to be any performance problems.  Do I have a problem in the making?  Danger in the future?  Need service?  Or did I just choose the wrong option somewhere?

  • Status Indicator Light not working

I've been having a recurring issue with the status indicator light on my 15.4-inch MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz (Mid-2009). I learned recently that it's normal for the status indicator light to be on when the computer starts up, shuts down and goes to sleep. Lately, the status indicator light has not appeared at all when the computer starts up, goes to sleep, and shuts down. I've tried almost everything and still nothing has worked
1.) Checked to see if any of the ports are working: FireWire, Ethernet, MagSafe, SD card, USB, Mini-DisplayPort. These ports are behaving as normal, working fine.
2.) Checked and successfully paired a seven button Apple Remote to test the IR receiver.
3.) Ran an Apple Hardware Test, found nothing wrong, passed the test.
4.) Reinstalled and erased my hard drive, still having issues.
5.) Bluetooth, AirPort Extreme, microphone, audio ports, speakers, and iSight are working.
6.) Battery works and the charger is working.
7.) Backlighting for display and keyboard work.
The computer is only 1 year and 4 months old. The issue began occurring two months ago. Now the computer does sleep, but if the fans are going, it takes a bit longer for the computer to go to sleep when I close the lid.
I haven't replaced the hard drive or installed any new hardware.

My computer's warranty with Apple, including tech support, service, and repair, has expired. However, I do have a remaining two year warranty with Best Buy Geek Squad.
I'm wondering how much would it cost out of pocket to take this computer to an Apple Store for service and repair with a Mac Genius?
So is there anything that could be wrong with this computer and if so, please help!

If you used "Secure erase", you can be certain that there is nothing left on the disk that is causing your problem.
Because you have a long wait for access to an Apple Authorized Service Provider, if you merely clicked "erase" (the one that does not take more than an hour), you could try Secure Erase now if you want to try the final possible fix you can do on your own.
... and installed the combo update recently, the size for that update was over 1GB.
    That is the right one.
I have been regularly doing those permissions. Thanks for the suggestions.
    You're welcome.
I'm taking my Mac to Geek Squad and Mac Genius next month when I visit my dad in Georgia, there's an Apple Store about 45 minutes away from his house and a Best Buy that sells Macs, cause it turns out Geek Squad's coverage for Apple/Mac is only in places where they sell Macs. I used my zip code and turned up 0 results but I typed the zip code for where my dad lives in North Georgia, and a Best Buy in Atlanta is available. So I will definitely go there and visit the Apple Store to at least see what my options are.
If you need help from Apple before you can go to a physical location next month, other Apple Technical Support service option contacts are available here:
      http://www.apple.com/contact/
Best Buy by far has the best warranty for computers from what the sales associate was telling me. Apparently, Best Buy warranty covers spills, drops & breaks, and overall maintenance issues. In fact, they told me if the computer can't be fixed, they'll replace it with a new one.
It should surprise nobody when salesmen tell customers that their own warranty product is best. Because you have apparently already paid for the Best Buy warranty, you can take advantage of their warranty and enjoy the "best" results if you can find a location that honors it.
Thanks for advice and if there's anything else you can think of, let me know.
You're welcome. You have all my suggestions. However, if I think of anything else, I will post back here.
We will watch for your status update. Please let us know what fix works for you.

  • Indicator light failure on G3 iBook after security update

I use a G3 iBook as second choice for occasional work. Last night after installing the latest Tiger security update I noticed that the indicator light at the front of the book no longer functions. When I put the iBook to sleep I saw there was no little breathing light that's usually going in and out.
Is this inevitably a hardware malfunction or could there be something in the system that might be causing this?

    Hi Tom,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
    If no improvement...
Have you done a PRAM reset...

  • Disk Activity Light?

I'm a recent convert to the Mac world. One thing that I've become accustomed to is watching the little flckering light that indicated when Windows was accessing the disk, whether it be to load an application, access disk cache, or paging to disk.
Obviously this is trivial but PowerBooks don't have anything that indicates disk activity other than the Activity Monitor. My question is: Is there a small utility that sits in finder or the menu bar that would simulate a disk activity light?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Joe,
You could try XRG, but why not keeping Activity Monitor in the Dock, and in the Login Items, and choose Dock Icon > Show Disk Activity ?

  • PB Wouldn't start, now no indicator light

all of a sudden I had real problems starting my PB with the button. It took about 10 tries pressing softly, hard, medium, etc. When I'd get it to turn on, the indicator light wan't lit up. I went to Support page on Mac.com and there was an article about "POWERBOOK WONT START: they suggested resetting PRAM.
I think I reset pram, becaus afterward my time had been reset 1970 and 00:00,
Now it startts, but there is never the old indicator light at the front that used to light up: Also, I never get email notifications from I Calendar for events. Any suggestions? I use OnyX to run scripts, clean, etc. Vincent

    Hi, Vincent,
there are two remarks in your post which i find odd:
    a) a 13" PB - probably it's a 12 ".
    b) when my 12"PB is running, the little light in the front-latch is not alight. It starts to blink very slowly (kind of breething) when it sleeps, and when the machine is idle and the screen (not the processor!) is sleeping.
But there is something wring with your PB.
    a) repeatedly pressing the power-button is certainly not normal. could be caused by mechanical or liquid dirt in the contact area of this button, but could also be software or electronics.
    b) when you reset the PRAM, the date is definitively NOT reset.
Question: did you do "maintenance" - i mean Back-Ups (in order to safeguard your files), but also things like "repair permissions", check the hardware via disk utility?
Also: did you check the prefs of iCal? there is a switch to send no alarm, if iCal is off...
please, post back, i'm curious to see whether this is a hardware problem, or a software one.

  • Status Indicator Light permanently off

    Hi there,
I'm hoping someone can help me with this problem. I've set out some of the history too, as I have no idea whether this is hardware or software related. Apolgies for the length!
    1) The immediate issue is that the status indicator light at the front of my black Macbook stopped working today. When I shut the lid or press the sleep option on the Apple logo in the top left corner, it remains off, even though it does appear to go asleep (makes the waking up noise when I open the lid).
2)I have followed the recommended procedures in Apple Help to re-set the PRAM and the SMC settings, and it made no difference.
3)My battery says it's charged at 100%. Here's the profiler report:

    4) I have no idea whether it's related, by my hard drive failed completely 3 days ago and was replaced (mechanical failure - sudden onset of click of death, spinning beachball, turned it off, wouldn't turn on, no data recoverable). When the drive was replaced (by Apple, but not under warranty), I also upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. The light seemed to work until today though.
    5) This is the third time the drive has failed in the same way and been replaced. The computer is 3 1/2 years old, and first failure happened about 7 months in. Second failure a year ago. Third three days ago. Apple say 'drives fail'. I am a very careful and unadventurous user of my MacBook. I do carry it around, but for large amounts of time it sits quietly on a table, using only licensed software to do not very challenging tasks. Does anyone have any ideas as to why 3 failures?
    6) Yesterday I installed Dragon Dictate for Mac 2.0, which seems to be full of bugs and keeps crashing. This morning it was hanging and I tried to force quit but couldn't. I was then able to quit it normally, but the force quit window was still open and I could neither cancel nor make it force quit, and had to shut down the computer and start again.
    7) It was after this that I notice the SIL issue, but can't say whether it was working immediately before. I know it worked initially after the Dragon install.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't seem to be able to edit the post above, hence this update.
I closed the lid and left the machine to sleep overnight, and when I woke up this morning the SIL light was on, and now appears to be working as normal each time I close it.
    So my question now is:
    a) If it happens again, is it something to be worried about?
b)re my point 5): can anyone think what would cause three hard drive failures? In particular, if it's something I'm causing, I'd like to know how not to cause it!
    Thank you.

  • MBP won't start or read from optical drive; steady sleep indicator light

MBP went into sleep mode at some point during the day. Now I cannot wake it up. I had a steady sleep indicator light. I've tried everything in the book (holding down pwr button to shut down, then restarting; reset power manager; tried rebooting with OS disc #1 installed - which now will not eject).
When I press the power button, I can hear the optical drive start to turn, then it stops short. The drive will spin for awhile, then stops automatically. The computer fans come on, but that's about it. I can't reboot so as to run Disk Utility. The screen remains black. Starting with shift key pressed for Safe mode or pressing C also have not worked. Seems as if the computer is not getting passed the initial start up sequence. My wife also has a MBP but I haven't tried reading my computer via Firewire yet. Not sure that will help.
I'm a long way away from any Apple store (Kazakhstan) and would greatly appreciate some help. Thanks! Scott

This problem has been resolved. Problem was a faulty RAM module. I sent my MacBook Pro to an authorized service center; they had it fixed in less than 1 day. Works fine now. No problems since!

I see that you are having an issue with the light on the printer staying on solid.  One thing that you can try is to make sure you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip.  Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general.
Please click on the link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
Once you have the power cable in a wall outlet, power cycle the printer with the use of the ON/OFF button.
If you are still having issue or if you have any other questions, please feel free to write me back.
Hope you have a great Tuesday.

  • Battery Charging Indicator Light Is Out

I own a tangerine iBook, OS X 10.4 operating system.
For a year or so charging the battery while the power cord in has been a "fussy" project -- sometimes it wouldn't charge until I moved the "plug-in-to-the-computer" end of the cord out ever so slightly. I bought a new power cord, but that didn't change things.
I don't have internet at hom, so most days I take my laptop and power cord to the public library and use the library's WiFi to look for work. Yesterday I came home, plugged in the power cord, and no battery charging light. I "jiggled" the cord, got out the old power cord and tried that one, then I tried a different electrical outlet. No battery charging indicator light, and the battery is discharging while I use it with the power cord.
I'm assuming this is an electrical problem that I can't fix, but can anyone fix it? When the battery runs out, will the iBook keep running when plugged into an electircal outlet, or is the electricity not getting to where it need to be?
I've had problems with the battery not charging before, and once I was advised to reset something, but I've alway had the indicator light on, so now I don't know if power is getting to my computer.
I went to About This Computer, clicked on Power and saw this:
    AC Charger Information:
      AC Charger (Watts):    0
      Connected:    No
      Charging:    No
which looks like it doesn't think I'm connected to any power source.

Yes, if resetting the PMU doesn't work, it does sound like the DC-in board has failed.
It is not an easy repair (especially for someone who describes herself as "NonTech."

  • After upgrading to Mac OS 10.6.8, sleep indicator light remains off when I start my MB Pro

After upgrading to Mac OS 10.6.8, sleep indicator light remains off when I start my 15" MB Pro, but the computer works, and when I put it to sleep, the light flashes as normally. Any suggestions?

    Hi j,
An SMC Reset can fix some SIL issues. If everything is working fine . . . ? Anyway, it shouldn't hurt anything to try it if you want: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • Sleep indicator light not working

This isn't really that huge of an issue, but I've noticed that the sleep indicator light on my 366MHz Firewire iBook, which I recently bought on eBay and installed a few upgrades in, seems to not be flashing when the computer is asleep. At first I suspected a bad LED, so I swapped it out with a known-good indicator light from my previous 300MHz iBook. That hasn't seemed to work, and both display cables going into the motherboard appear to be securely attached. Oddly enough, I do recall one time when I put the computer to sleep and the indicator light worked (this was somewhere in the middle of my trying to get it to work), but I haven't been able to replicate it.

Have you tried to reset the Power Management Unit (PMU)?

  • G5 Froze & No Longer Able To Start Up - Indicator Light Flashes 3 Times

I was using Logic while my PowerMac G5 DP 1.8 froze completely. I wasn't able to escape the program or do anything else for that matter so I manually powered down and then when I turned my G5 on again the computer would not start up while the indicator light on the front panel flashed 3 times and then paused and then repeated again indefinitely. Over time the fan starts softly and then gets very loud.
I have been reading alot of reports, here and elsewhere, that this has been happening to alot of G5's after about 3 years time (which is approximately the same age as my computer). I also tried a bunch of stuff like the PMU reset, pulling out some of the memory and trying to restart the computer but nothing has worked.
From my web research of other people's experiences, it appears that the logic board or the CPU or both need to be replaced. I have an appointment to take the G5 to my local Apple store but I was wondering what to expect. The G5 is obviously no longer under warranty but are they going to expect me to pay for a new board or CPU? I also read somewhere that in one case the Apple store just fixed the computer with no charge for parts or labor.
Has anybody had this experience recently and know what to expect? I'm really disappointed and frustrated and this couldn't have happened at a worse time for me! Any advice or insight would def be appreciated...

    Thanks for your response DP...
I went to my Apple store appointment last night and was informed that 3 blinking lights means either that there is a problem with RAM or that the Logic Board needs to be replaced. They tried to start the machine with their RAM with no success which leaves only the Logic Board as the culprit.
Once again I am extremely disappointed that my computer which is only 4 years old needs a major repair! And I was quoted ~ $800 from the Apple Store to get it fixed!!!
FAO DP: Which UPS do you recommend? And do you think that a UPS would have saved my Logic Board? Is there a connection between the use of a UPS and the longevity of the Logic Board in your experience? What hurts the Logic Board - spikes or surges or is it drop-off's too? And just to check, regarding the symptoms I described above, does it seem like my power supply is still working ok?
