Crack in outer case / screen bezel on 20" iMac G5 getting worse by the week

Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem ...?
About a month ago, I noticed a very small crack in the bottom left-hand corner of my iMac's outer casing - at first I thought it was a mould mark that occassionally picked up sunlight coming into the room in the mornings, as in the evenings it was barely noticabable - but more recently I it has increased in length and can be clearly seen in any light ...
Have a look at these photos .... one is with a flash & one without ...
http://tinyurl.com/ejjq6
http://tinyurl.com/hvrpg
My estimate is this crack is now growing by the week but I am not sure exactly why ... also, for the past couple of months - more & more CD's & DVDs are falling out of the 'slot load' without halting after an eject - I have also had a power supply issue recently where my machine keeps switching itself off randomly and without warning (at present I can only use it successfully for lite duties such as checking emails in Entourage & browsing) .... and my hunch is that something inside my machine is getting hot and has warped or buckled the casing.
This machine has been on my desk since new about 9 months ago - the room temparaure is around 22º - 29º celcius (70º - 85º farenheit) on average. It's never been moved or shipped anywhere & is not likely to have been damaged by anything else - as the space is mininal with a bed, desk chair & my Mac - I also live alone and am the only one who has ever used it and that 'direct sunlight' I mentioned earlier is minimal ... so it's a total mystery as to how & why this crack has appeared ...
I would like to know if anyone else has noticed any cracks in the outer casings of your iMacs .... there were a couple of previous threads from late last year, but as these have been archived I could not reply to them so have started a new post ...
you can see previous case-cracking thread here: --> http://tinyurl.com/nr2wx
And - can any of the Mac Daddy's (you know who you are in these forums give me some advice on how best to approach Apple to have it checked ?? My machine still has 3 months left of it's initial 1 year warranty - it goes in for a PSU check and/or replacement in 1 week - but something tells me I might be not be taken too seriously regarding the crack in my machine ...

Boomer ... thanks for your reply ...
Regarding my Apple approach - I went through the iBook logic board fiasco, way back in the early days before it was acknowledged by Apple to be a manufacturing flaw. The company here in Auckland who are the Apple representatives for New Zealand is a company called Renaissance (our official Apple head office is actually in Sydney, Australia) - when I first informed them of my iBook 700 starting up to a garbled start-up screen and then freezing, they told me I must have dropped it and would not consider repairing it under warranty or Apple Care. Many months of conversations, tests by Apple service technicians and eventually, talks with the management at Renaissance, and out of pocket expenses by me, eventually got me nowhere and the final conclusion was that I had misused my machine and it would not be repaired under warranty. After several discouraging months later, I eventually sold it as spare parts for a fraction of what I had paid for it ... 6 months later the iBook Logic Board fault was acknowledged - but for me, it came way too late ...
Fast forward 3 years …
I purchased my iMac G5 last July, which has now developed a serious power supply issue where it randomly shuts down without warning when processing an average size (350MBs) video file in Toast or resizing a medium size image in Photoshop with the internal fans going ballistic on a regular basis whenever a heavy task is laid on the processor - and more recently, the crack in the lower-left hand corner growing larger. Also, the disks falling out of the slot-load - & all this from a machine which apart from the above - looks in minted brand new condition ... because it really hasn't had that much use in it’s short life - if it was new car, it would only have done about 20,000kms ...
My point is. Although the PSU issue is widely acknowledged and the one in my machine is most likely to be checked & replaced by Apple NZ free-of-charge - I feel that I might not be so lucky with the cracked case. The level of service here in New Zealand I would say is but a fraction of the support one might receive in Australia & the States – or at least for me it appears that way ... you would not believe that 'attitude' I have come up against when dealing with managers at Renaissance – and any request to have a speedy check done on my iMac by 3 separate service centres will take more than a week (closer to 2 weeks) to complete as the replacement PSU has to be ordered, then shipped from Australia – there is no such thing as a routine ‘same day or next day’ service or repair! I have lodged the crack complaint with Apple Australasia through our local help-line which diverts automatically to the Apple Customer Liaison desk in Australia but when I spoke to a local service centre, an Apple tech suggested it was unlikely to be replaced if there were no other ‘documented’ accounts of cracks on other 20” G5 iMacs anywhere else. And even without seeing it, he suggested the crack has most likely been caused by ‘blunt force’.
And as I know that is not the case, I sense I am in for another battle with the honchos at Renaissance who will most likely decline the repair or replacement of the casing under warranty.
Hence the reason for this post – I am trying to gather information to help support my case. I am adamant this crack has appeared on it’s own and has not been hit by anything blunt or due to misuse.
You might be asking why I have not just taken it in already to have all 3 things checked at the same time?
Firstly, the fans started acting up about 2-3 months ago – I have performed several maintenance tasks on my machine since then (resetting the power parameters: resetting VRAM & PRAM), & other maintenance tasks (Ethernet/network tweaks & running Yasu to refresh the system) & which combined, reduced the fan noise by about 50%, & that’s something I considered I could live with, considering the amount of others in these forums who are experiencing the same problem. I figured the iMac G5 is always going to be noisy – because no-one in these forums has posted an absolute fix yet - I didn’t see the point in taking it in and being without a machine for 2 weeks, only to be told there was nothing wrong with it. It was also around this time that CDs & DVDs began falling from the slot load & down the back of my desk.
Then the crack came to my attention about a month ago, which I reported immediately to the help line (including the excessive fan noise) and was issued a specific ‘case number’– again, I was told to bring it in to a local service centre but when I called to arrange a time to drop off, I was again told it would take up to 2 weeks for an assessment – that’s when the tech suggested the crack was not a defect but damage caused by a blunt object and was unlikely to be covered under warranty.
My alarm bells starting ringing when I heard that, & I could see myself re-experiencing the long-winded battle with Apple NZ again to be taken seriously.
I was actually in the process of winding down my current assignment, (which is worth $2,000 to me) in preparation of not having a machine for 2 weeks to fix the PSU as I do not have another unit with which to work on - when my iMac started randomly switching itself off without warning last week – as a result, I have had to persevere at a snails pace – saving my work every 2 mins, as I have to get this project finished before I can afford to hire a replacement machine in the interim ….
I am stuck in a catch-22.
My machine will be going in this Monday to have all 4 malfunctions inspected: fans, PSU, cracked casing & the disc eject problem … my expectation is to have all 4 issues repaired under warranty as I have looked after this machine, as with any other machine or appliance I own – with love & with care !!
To round it all up - and I apologise for the drawn-out and rather convoluted explanation, but I am trying to find others who might also be having case/bezel issues with their G5 iMacs, which could hopefully support my claim when I come up against the impending ‘NO’ regarding the cracked casing …

  • Audio problem: large avi file / audio out of sync getting worse towards the end

    Hi,
We have an 11 hours avi file (about 500GB) that plays fine in Windows Media Player and is in sync.
When we import it into Premiere Pro CS6 audio and video tracks are of the same length. At the beginning of the video sound is fine and in sync as well. But at the end of the video the audio is out of sync by a couple of frames (but still the same length). We tried different things and the only thing that worked was setting the audio buffer size to maximum. Now the audio is in sync at the beginning, middle and end of video. But of course editing is impossible like this (if you hit pause the audio needs some time to stop).
Any help or suggestions are welcome.
    Cheers

  • HT204216 On my PC I used to having messenger IMs move freely through out my screen. is there any way to get this effect on a mac? Switching screen just to respond to an IM is getting really annoying.

coming from a PC user: Is there any way to Have IMs from messengers be able to "float" freely within the screen Instead of flipping from safari( or whatever is open ) to the messenger? I'm not sure this even makes sense.

Many providers either assign and/or let you set an email address to be used instead of your phone number. All the providers here in Japan do that. It may be possible in the U.S. too.
So while you can send to my phone number (which is only useful if using an app which capable of doing that), you can also send an MMS to a special email address, which makes it possible to send MMS messages from an ordinary email client to my phone. That is very convenient.
On my iPhone 5 there is a setting in Settings > Messages at the bottom that is labeled "MMS Email Address". If I enter the email address there (which has to be registered with my cell phone provider) then people can send me MMS messages from phones or ordinary email clients.

  • Chrome bezel scratching - my results for getting rid of the issues

well, I was nervous as **** about it, but an incase case managed to scratch the bezel and give it blotchy marks.
I had tried cleaning it and using a very very mild polish, but nothing worked.
So I decided to take teh plunge, with the feeling that if it didnt work, id sand the bezel down to a matte finish.
I used Autosol metal polish, very lightly and carefully, followed by meguiars scratch x to clean up the finish and add some resiliancy, followed by a finishing polish, i.e. a foam based one, usually used with the final polishing on a car before shipping.
It worked! PERFECTLY! even worked on the back of the phone, 99.9% of the scratching is gone.
I dont want to go any deeper or harder in fear of stripping it, but it looks ten times better!

Ok well as you can see from the pictures above, thats it in it's current state, so I decided to mask up the phone and give it a **** good polish this time.
I used a microfiber cloth and a standard polishing cloth, Autosol Metal polish, Meguiars ScratchX, Masking Tape, and a can of WD40 and some window cleaning spray. All will become clear
So here's the phone and the cloths etc phones been masked up with alot of masking tape.
    http://img17.imageshack.us/my.php?image=phoneclean1.jpg
Heres the masked phone after I've started with the metal polish
    http://img27.imageshack.us/my.php?image=phoneclean2.jpg
Now in the middle of polishing, Look how black the cloth has gotten on that one side alone!
    http://img4.imageshack.us/my.php?image=phoneclean3.jpg
The top bezel after one round of polish, looking alot better with only one or two scratches visible
    http://img4.imageshack.us/my.php?image=phoneclean4.jpg
Now time for the back, I've removed the masking tape, and predictibly, there is some residue which the Meguiars will remove for me, and clean up the back end.
    http://img4.imageshack.us/my.php?image=phoneclean5.jpg
Polish Going On, I should point out that the meguiars is a very gently finishing polish, so i didnt go to heavy here, and I was careful to avoid the camera
    http://img15.imageshack.us/my.php?image=phoneclean6.jpg
Letting the polish dry before buffing off
    http://img518.imageshack.us/my.php?image=phoneclean7.jpg
At this point the phone was clean so to speak, There was some residue on there from the tape and polish, so spraying a little WD40 on the cloth and wiping it over removed all of that, esp in the little bits where it got through the mashing between the bezel and the screen, took a firm touch but it worked perfectly. After that, I wiped it down thoroughly and took a fresh cloth, microfibre in this case and not the one I was polishing on, and cleaned it with window cleaning spray. Before finally rubbing it over thoroughly to remove any excess. I used a little tiny bit of water on another cloth to remove any alcohol that could have been left by the window cleaning spray
    Finished back
    http://img19.imageshack.us/my.php?image=phoneclean8.jpg
Quick Photo of the Size Bezel, now greatly reduced in scratches and no blemishes and still shiny!
    http://img8.imageshack.us/my.php?image=phoneclean9.jpg
And another of the the other side, still shiny though the picture makes it look a little rough, even though it isnt
    http://img8.imageshack.us/my.php?image=phoneclean10.jpg
And another of the back again, different angle
    http://img4.imageshack.us/my.php?image=phoneclean11.jpg
All in all I'm very pleased with how it turned out, despite absolutley bricking it and very nearly not doing it at all in fear of destroying it. It worked with a gently touch. Phone looks and feels like new

  • My S4 was under warranty and they only send out reconditioned phones. They on they sent was worse than the first one.

Not happy. The phone they sent out to replace my S4, that is under warranty ,was reconditioned and it has more problems than my other phone.  They said Samsung will not let them replace it with a new one.  What's the deal?

    stef7 wrote:
A reconditioned or certified device should operate properly.
As should your "NEW" phone, too. Unfortunately, not everything works as it should and therein lies the need for a warranty.
    stef7 wrote:
If they don't (and obviously that is the case here), the OEM is not fulfilling their warranty are they?
Only if they don't offer to replace your phone again if you have another problem. Otherwise they ARE fulfilling their warranty.
    stef7 wrote:
Oh wait, who EXACTLY is doing the reconditioning / re-certification on these devices?
Obviously I have no idea, but I am sure it is simply a conspiracy where they are using untrained 5 year olds.
    stef7 wrote:
What documentation are people getting that shows it passed various tests properly?
I was unaware that the warranty promised this type of documentation.

  • My Macbook air (only 2 months old) has a black screen and I cannot see to get signed on, the keyboard seems to be on as I can see via having put on the Caps key which lights up and also the power cable when connected is at green how do I fix this?

I have been faced with a Black screen this morning when I have gone to sign in/open my Macbook air this morning.  I can see that the keyboard seems to be on as the caps key when pressed is lighting up as is my charger cable link, however have noticed that the apple logo is not lit up.  Any thoughts?

Try resetting SMC and NVRAP and then reboot.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
Try booting the Recovery Partition.  Power off, boot and then hold down the Command and R keys.  Is the screen still black?  If so it is not a software problem so take it in for diagnosis and repairs.  Make a Genius Bar reservation http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ or find an Apple Authorized Service Provider https://locate.apple.com/country .
If you are running Mavericks try upgrading to 10.9.2.  It has a fix for black screen problems.

  • After downloading the update ios7 my moms phone has been locked with a four digit security code that she didn't have before the update. So she is locked out of her phone. How do I get rid of the four digit code

HOw do I unlock the phone if there was never a lock code on there before the update?

Yep.  Same here.  There's a NEW feature in iOS7 for Find my iPhone.  It requires a passcode.  My wife never had a passcode and doesn't have her computer to restore the backup.
Spent an hour on the phone with customer service last night trying to restore the phone to factory settings but it didn't allow us access.
Right now we have a 9-month old brick sitting on the table.
Who in their right mind decided to release this feature that requires a passcode without checking first to see if the user has a passcode?
I was not really polite to the support staff last night on the call but the person was very professional.  Kudos to how he handled my call but this is just stupid.  So Microsoft-like, so un-Apple-like.
This feature with this iOS rollout is a big failure and my wife, who didn't want an iPhone until she got (and loved it) but is now out looking for an Android device.  Apple has lost a customer that they had only recently won over.

  • Is it possible to put an iMac G5 screen into a intel iMac of the same size?

my white 17" intel imac screen is about 60% covered with the vertical line problem, ive tried openeing it
and blowing air through it, in hopes it was just some crazy dust accumulation, and smc fan control, but its getting worse by the week.
i have a g5 imac 17" with a perfect screen, but a dead HD so i dont use it,
can i get my G5  screen taken out and put into my intel?
id think it would be possible since their the same same size screen for the same type of imac
unless the the inner connections, placement etc. is different between the two.
    thanks
    -shane
heres a picture of my intel screen

    Shane B,
I have the same model iMac with the same problem screen.
It's the LCD panel that is defective,(at least in my case).
You can validate this by getting a mini DVI adapter to connect the iMac to an external screen and test it on your HDTV or on any external screen.
Get the proper adapter from Mini DVI to what you have on the external screen or TV (HDMI, DVI, VGA)
and a cable to connect it and see if the image on the external screen or TV is OK.
In my case, my iMac was sitting on a shelf for two years before I thought of trying this.
I am now using it as a media server linked to my HDTV.
I ended up opening the iMac case to disconnect the LCD so I would not have to look at the ugly defective display sitting right next to my HDTV.

  • Crack in inner LCD screen of iPhone 4 or not?

Yesterday, I suddenly realized that there was a small clump of red, green and black lines appearing on the top left hand corner of my iPhone screen (near to the receptioon signal). When I went to the Apple Service Centre, I was told that there was a crack in the inner LCD screen which led to it. He even pointed that the fine green line is an indication of a cracked LCD and it will only get worse in the long run. However, over yesterday's night and today, this "clump" has started to slowly disappeared and now it is totally gone. I am totally confused? Is it a cracked LCD or some weird problem? Is there anyone who can shed some light on what is going on? Although I'm happy that it is gone and things seems to return to normal.

I think that it would be impossible for anyone on this forum to render an intelligent opinion without seeing your phone.

    Have you tried:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.

  • Odd crack in aluminum case under 27" glass?

    Hello!
So I bought a brand new i3 27" iMac last night at Bestbuy here in Columbus. After getting it home, unboxing, and setting it up I noticed two cracks in the aluminum case right beneath the glass (not under the glass, below it on the case). One on each side. Being on both sides it led me to believe that it was suppose to be there. But then I thought, hey, this is an apple product, if they needed a bigger ledge there for the glass they would have put it in! This thing is too beautiful for that to have been a design. Once I saw the cracks, I inspected it further and found a clump of dead pixels in the bottom left of the screen.
Now I'm obviously taking this back and getting an exchange for the pixels, but I'd like to know if this is or is not an issue with the case as well. And if so, I couldn't find anyone else with this problem here or elsewhere online, so I thought I'd share.
Notice the red line. It's identical on both sides. I was under the impression that the entire case was milled out of one solid piece of aluminum. It's a very thin crack, but it's just about as long as the red line is, on both sides.

I wanted to give everyone an update before they do what I did.
I went into Bestbuy to exchange my iMac. Both of their displays had those cracks. We opened up their entire stock of 27" i3 iMacs. They all had it. I ended up going to the closest Apple Store and found out that the front piece with the logo on it is in fact a seperate piece. Those aren't cracks, they are seams. Often the fit is so perfect is doesn't look like a seam.
    Anyways, thought I'd share. Lol

Both. My 20" iMac at work has the same problem. It is common on the ALU 20" iMacs and yes I would say it's defective. Apple may not agree though.

    Hi Kiran,
Here is the sample code.If you are using reuse_alv_grid_display, no need to write code in PBO.
Just double click the 'TEST' which is written in code. Then create a GUI Status. In Application toolbar, type the name of the button you want(say BUTTON).Then double click that name. Then enter the ICON name and function text.Activate it.This itself will work.If you want all the functionalities, then try to do as Vinod told.
