Cracked harddrive?

i got an old powerbook back from apple and i had spilt milk on it
and they told me nothing could be done, but didn't really explain to me why..
anyway they replaced it with a macbook pro
but i turned my old powerbook on and ever so often i hear a churning gears sound
i've been told that , that's because my harddrive is cracked.
is this true?

They gave you a MacBook Pro as a replacement for a MacBook that you spilled milk on/in? That would typically not even be covered under AppleCare... let alone warrant such a drastic free upgrade. So... I guess the saying needs to be upgraded from "No use crying over spilled milk" to "Jump up and down and dance in glee over spilled milk".
I would doubt it's a "cracked" hard drive. I've never heard of such a thing. It sounds more like the sound the optical drive makes when booting or waking from sleep (or when putting in or taking out a disk).
** I would not recommend that anyone pour milk (or anything else) into their notebook and expect the same thing.

  • Satellite A500D-10E - USB sound is cracking/jittery during playback

    Hi!
I'm having some problems with my USB Audio on my Toshiba A500D-10E.
The sound is cracking/jittery during all sound playback. Even system sounds when the computer is otherwise idle.
I have tried two different USB sound devices (Creative Arena USB Headset and Sandberg USB Sound Box 7.1), both with the same crackling sound, both working just fine on two other laptops.
It's not feedback noise, It is only when sound is playing I get the crackling sound.
When no sound is playing, the speakers are quiet.
The Conclusion is that there is some fault with running audio trough my USB ports.
Mouse, harddrive etc works just fine over the USB ports.
Running sound trough my onboard soundcard works just fine, except it does not have analog 5.1 output available, thus I need an external sound device to get analog 5.1 sound output. I am now using the Sandberg USB Soundbox 7.1 to achieve this.
    I have tried the following:
Installing the newest drivers for the USB box
Tried using the windows-provided generic drivers.
    Reinstalled Windows (twice)
Tried all the different usb ports
Tried without any other usb devices plugged in
    Adjusted the output bitrate
    Disabling the onboard soundcard
Disabled all other sound devices, including recording devices
I have the newest BIOS update (1.20)
    I have a Toshiba A500D-10E laptop
    2.3GHz Dual core prossessor
    4GB ram
Radeon HD 4600 series VGA card
    Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit
All USB ports are USB 2.0 compatible.
Could you please help me solve this problem? I've done some research and think there might have
something to do with IRQ sharing, allthough I can not find any good explainations as to how I would go about to fix it.

    >Like I said, I have tried two different USB sound devices (Creative Arena USB headset and Sandberg Soundbox), both work just fine on other laptops I've tested them on, neither works on mine. So I don't think it's the external sound devices.
Did you test this with different installed Windows systems?
How about power saving for USB ports?
    Try to disable this.
Try to connect also the external USB sound card to an external USB hub with an own power supply
Would be interesting if the same happens too.

  • External harddrive (e-sata) keeps freezing under linux...

...and a reboot into windows is required to get it to remount. I have no idea what is causing this behavior and it seems to happen at random. I don't know if this would happen under windows as I hardly even use windows any more. Once it happens I have to boot into windows and then power cycle the external harddrive before either OS will recognize it and remount it. Does anyone here know why this might be happening or how to at least find out what is causing this to happen. Cavalry makes this external harddrive and I'm pretty sure there is a western digital harddrive inside. Let me know if you need any other information. Thanks for any help.

There has been a virtual plethora of other issues attributed to the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT. I don't think anyone has yet really figured out which are truly related and which are not. The GPU is soldered onto the logic board, along with the CPU and other "controllers," so when the GPU overheats and begins cracking solder joints, it seemingly could affect a variety of things.

  • Cracked iPod video screen

I've bought my son iPod video 30G last Christmas. Yesterday he found iPod screen cracked and not working. He said he didn't do anything but keeping it in his backpack. I took it to "Smart" bar at the store where I bought it and got the worst experience. The "Smart" guy in that store kept saying about the limited warranty which does not cover the damage done by abuse and offering best option like recycling the four-month old iPod 30Gig and geting 10% discout for new purchase. He said it even cannot be repaired. Does it make any sense to anybody??
I've searched online and found there are tons of complains about fragile iPod video screen and Apple hasn't done anything about this inherent defect yet. Let me ask Apple company the question. Is it really only the user's fault? Is it fair to blame the customers only and even refusing the repair? I guess you should have clearly posted the statement like "the screen is extremely fragile, so please put it in hard-shell case not to break it" in the user manual.
So, good lesson, everyone. Don't waste your $300 for this poor material.

trust me if ipod screens were really that fragile i'd have broken one by now.
I like have the worst care for electronics ever.
let's see i've had three ipod's. my mom said she'd buy me a new one if i'd let her have my old one. that one still works. the next one suffered a corrupted harddrive. and my third one still works. it had better i only got it christmas.
anyway, at multiple times i have sat on dropped and banged against things each one of these ipods.
trust me if ipod screens were really that fragile i'd have broken one by now.
I did have a theory about this though. the accidental breaking.
this depends on the supposed idea that the front cover of the ipod is a layer of glass and one of plastic.
there may be a thin layer of air or moisture trapped between the two layers and when moved from intense cold to heat. the air or moisture expands and causes the material to break.
note the last science class i took was high school chem and i got a D. so no you can't take this to the bank, probably.
and that class was probably graded on a curve.

  • SATELLITE U845W-S400 Harddrive Failure

    Hi,
My Satellitte U845W-S400 was purchased in Dec 2012. When the screen was replaced (due to crack) in April 2013, the harddrive failed the system tests due to bad sectors. Support tried to get me to pay for it until I pointed out it was still under warrently and the harddrive was replaced. For the last 6 months, Intel Rapid Storage shows warning, "SATA disk on Controller 0, Port 0: Failed". Does this mean I need ANOTHER hard drive?!? Two failed hard drives on a computer 2 years old seems a bit excessive.  All my important data is stored on an external. Thoughts on what to do?
    Thanks!
    Kristen

when in safe mode, can you check the temp of the cpu?  newer Toshiba computers have a program that displays cpu temp, fan speed, etc.  I'm not sure if it will be avail. in safe mode.
I would lean toward possible thermal shutdown due to dust/dirt in the fan, fan housing, heat sink.  This can be cleaned by opening up the computer like this.
    L305-S5955, T9300 Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 60GB SSD, Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit

  • Computer Crashed, Now cracked Screen on Phone, How do I get my songs? Gurus

Ok, heres the deal, have a computer that Windows based I downloaded all my songs over 2000 dollars worth, well that crashed and wouldnt load 3 months ago. In the mean time, I was downloading directly off my 2G Iphone. Well my bro put another harddrive and operating system in. So on my computer I was still able to download Itunes and then Grab that folders from my old hard drive and authorize my new computer. Now I cracked my phone and Im getting a new one. How do I get the songs and apps I bought off my Iphone, so that I have them when I get my new Iphone?
Im going nuts here! THanks to anyone that can help!

With iphone attached, in itunes click File>Transfer Purchases.
This will get your itunes purchased music from iphone to your computer.
The apps should transfer automatically. If not, you should be able to download again for free. You will go through the buy screen, but there should be no charge. You can do a forum search for this as it has been asked and answered before.

  • Case Cracks White MacBook (2006)

I have observed cracks on my white macbook (Late 2006 model) case (both insde & out side). Everytime I take an appointment with the Genius, they say that they are so busy to replace the case and they might need at least 3-5 business days. Since I did not have an alternate computer, I have delayed a bit. Now that I recently got a iMac, I would like to turn in my macbook for repair. Not sure if apple has spares to repair the cracked outer shells. Any idea how long and how much it costs to get it fixed ? Or can I return my laptop to get some store credit and buy a new Macbook ??

Only Apple would know that.  Also, ask Apple.  Not going to happen.  You can't return a 6 year old mac and expect to get a store credit.  Since the repair volume of the store seems to be high, get an estimate and leave it there for repair if you find the price of repair to be acceptable.

  • How do I backup an iTunes library if it is on an external harddrive

    Hi
Like so many I have an iTunes library that is rapidly outgrowing my internal harddrive. (ahh Dr Who why did you have to be so good!!??!)
I have been using timemachine to backup my MacBook's drive.
    I found articles:
How to move iTunes library to external drive (pretty much simple as!!) I even have the perfect portable drive
How to Back up iTunes to an external drive (also simple)
But what I can't find (and maybe I am being stupid?) is how to back up that new iTunes library (in future backups) now that it is on it's own external drive.  Do I need to move it to the MacBook each month and do a manual back up? - pretty sure time machine wont back up the external drive (even though the time machine drive is way big enough)
Not having used external drives too often I am not sure if maybe I can back up the library by following the procedure for backing up to an external drive but just picking the library from where it sits on a second external drive to start it - guess I could just test this before I delete the internal library?
Both of my ideas seem time consuming (and a bit "waving the rubber chicken" to quote Merlin Mann) - any recommendations for a more automated process - the whole reason for me using Time machine is it works without me having to be involved.
    Any help would be appreciated
    My need exceeds my skills
    Thanx
    Cecilia

  • I had my computer replaced but copied my hard drive and now I can't access my firefox bookmarks, how can I go and extract the bookmarks from my copied harddrive?

My HP Touchsmart was sent back in to HP for repairs under warranty. I was advised to make a copy of my harddrive because they may erase my hard drive, which they did, if the problem had to do with a faulty motherboard, which it was. They replaced my HD with a brand new one and now I DO NOT have any of my data installed in the new computer. Luckily I still have an exact replicate of my hard drive on a seperate external HD. However, when I looked in the bookmark.html under the firefox folder, the bookmarks were all blank and none of my bookmarks were there. I checked the properties tabe and it was dated sometime in March of 2011, earlier this year. I have a lot of stuff I wish to pull out from. The Firefox version I was using was the 3.6.16 and the file version was 1.9.2.4095, my OS was use Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I would like to be able to access it again. Please help. Just a heads up but I'm taking a guess you guys already know, that the information under troubleshooting information is of my current computer and not the same as the one that is copied in my hard drive.

Sorry, I don't find a support article for that type of situation. Read these two articles for help, as bookmarks.html isn't the file type you should be looking for.

  • Unable to boot Windows 7 Premium from an external harddrive

I recently gained an interest in playing microsoft based games, and just recently got my late 2013 macbook pro retina 15". I have been trying for several hours for the last two days to get bootcamp to boot Windows 7 Premium from a 500GB external harddrive without re-partiitioning my internal harddrive. I can get to the first screen of the Windows 7 Install asking about language, but neither my keyboard or mousepad respond with the windows installer. I assume this is because Windows 7 premium does not have USB 3.0 capability. Is there a workaround for this that doesn't involve partitioning my internal drive?

That's all fine and good, but I would strongly prefer not to have to use internal drive space for Windows. Even If I were to use the internal drive to install it, I would still run into the same problems of not having a keyboard or trackpad as I've seen other users having issues with. It stands to reason that if I had a working keyboard and mouse that I would be able to install it to an external hard drive, using a workaround method found here:
    http://bleeptobleep.blogspot.fr/2013/02/mac-install-windows-7-or-8-on-external.h tml
If I had to partition my internal drive, what would be the absolute minimum amount of space I would need?

I have an imac 20 in. The old hard drive crapped out on me. i put a new harddrive in and am now trying to install linux. But the imac doesnt recognise any keyboards

Without a bootable backup/clone or a Time Machine backup of your previous Snow Leopard installation or a saved copy of Lion's install app, you'll have to upgrade your Leopard volume to Snow Leopard (10.6.6+) so you can waste another hour or more DLing the Lion thing again.

Restore your library from the Time Machine backup to your Pictures folder as shown here:
Launch iPhoto and have it will open your library.

  • How do I install an OS on a blank harddrive

Hi, I've got a problem with my harddrive, it's on its way out. The Mac will still start, but after a while, the HDD gets stuck and so it's time to replace. I have a full backup on my time machine external hard drive - my question is, how do I get this on the new blank hard drive?
I'm using 10.5.8, but I don't have an installation disk. THe HDD was replaced once before under warranty, and the people in the shop were kind enough to stick on the new system, upgrading me from 10.4, so no disk available. I MIGHT have an installation disk for 10.4, but as far as I understand, I would not be able to restore my system because my backup is on 10.5.
    ANy thoughts?
Also, I'm pondering installing an SSD which would be 125GB (financial reasons prevent me from buying a bigger one).
My current HD is 160GB, i.e. the backup will be bigger than the capacity of the SSD.  I presume if I somehow get to install Leopard (or Lion) on it, I can restore selected folders, thereby circumventing the problem?
THanks for any answers - I really appreciate the help in this forum!
    Veronika

Don't panic - all the people on this board are other users, so there's bound to be times when no-one's around.
You do have a problem. You can't restore from Time Machine until the HD is formatted and you'll need an install disc to do that and initiate the restore. I don't believe 10.4 can do that as TM wasn't available then.
Which leaves you with the choice of obtaining a 10.5 retail install disc which is going to cost $130 and up (and up, and up…), or installing Snow Leopard, which will cost $29 or so from the Apple online store ( http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA )
You do appear to have the minimum hardware requirements for SL, but another 1GB of RAM wouldn't go amiss.
For TM have a read of Pondini's articles; http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
