  • Cracked hinged of Macbook mid-2010

The Macbook mid-2010 has an expired warranty, both sides of the hinge has a hairline crack. I called Apple Customer Service this afternoon and said that I can have this fixed but I have to pay for it. Is it possible to just bring this to Apple then just add a little amount in exchange for say an MBA 11" 64gb? I hope Apple will consider a global recall for this product, they could at least give a free repair. Anybody with same problem?

ok, I brought the Macbook to a Genius Bar (2hours drive), they said that they won't replace the Macbook nor give a free repair since it's out of warranty, their charging me $200+ (forgot the exact amount, maybe $280+) for the repair. It's so expensive, so I decided not to push through and the guy from the Genius Bar advised me it is not worth it to pay that amount for a small crack, he also said to use it more often and let the crack get bigger Apple might replace the whole unit for free if the crack is big enough! I hope Apple will recognize the problem so there would be a global recall or replacement of the Macbook mid-2010.
By the way, this is the image of the crack on the right side. There's also a smaller crack on the left side.

  • Why do hinges of Macbook Air break?

I own a MBA 13 inches which I bought sometime in 2008. After tthree years of using, one hinge broke after the other. I had both replaced for almost 200 bucks. This year, the left hinge again broke. I guess, very soon, the right hinge will break. I will definitely replace the hinges. I am thinking of selling this MBA and getting the newer MBA. But I am afraid that I will encounter the same problem with the Hinges. Is it a problem of simple lubrication that apple cannot solve?

The current version of the Air doesn't have hinges like yours so it probably won't break unless you really handle it poorly. As for why it breaks, I guess it's a design flaw because they changed it for the next installment.

  • Movement of hinge on MacBook Air 13 2011

Look at this. Is it ok? Have anybody the same problem? This black piece is a hinge or just a cap?

It is just a plastic cover, not the hinge itself.
This is nothing to be concerned about.

  • Macbook air hinge broken

Hi all, the right hand side hinge of my 2.5 year old macbook air has broken into pieces, and cracked and broken pieces of plastic off the grey plastic tubular hinge interconnecting piece. Does anyone know if this is covered by any kind of warranty for faulty parts? the metal hinge has broken and the screen is literally hanging off, although the computer has suffered no abuse or any kind of hit, just normal and infrequent opening and closing!

As Tony recommended you need to contact AppleCare directly. But hopefully this thread will serve as a reference point - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1893302?start=0&tstart=0
If you go through it all (and it's very long) you'll see that covers over 2 years and more importantly has had mixed results from users. It looks like Apple is handling machines on a case-by-case basis.

  • Macbook air hinge repair question please respond!!!!

Hey everyone, I have a question that hopefully someone can answer I've never sent anything into apple repair so don't know if they're a pain. Anyway in 2008 I bought a macbook air off of a guy I knew, he informed me there was a flaw which was the bottom right hand side of the bezel looked like bent a little toward the user, the computer worked fine and I love it! Anyway after like 8 months I opened it up and the left hinge thing cracked and this little piece came off??? I walked into an apple store while travelling without the air and talked to a genius he said its a common defect and they would fix it. I called tech support told. My story including the bezel thing and they said they would fix it.. should I be worried they will get it see the bezel and say well fix the hinge only somehow? What do you guys think? They can't be as liberal as dell who. Will repair anything...I mean I suppose once they get it they'll have to replace the bezel anyway because it seems to go together. The computer and hinge work 100% but. Would be sweet if repaired.. any thoughts? Sry for typing I'm on my mobile. O and I bought the air for 1000 still loving it..

I would suggest sending it in. I believe they will replace everything. They replaced parts on my MacBook once that I didn't think need replacing. Also, about six months ago, one fan went out in my current MacBook Pro. I called Apple on a Friday. Monday morning FedEx brought a box. The gal helped me pack it quick and she took it along back with her right away. Wednesday morning at 9:10AM she was back with it. Apple had replaced BOTH fans in it.

  • Macbook Air recall on broken hinges

I have the very early version of Macbook Air the one with the flip comparment that expose the usb. Now the problem I have is that after using the device for a few months a crack appear on the right side of the devices. I was **** because i know the price apple might want for repair. After research i heard that it had been recall for faulty design, and apple would fix the problem free of cost. I just wanted to know if they are still doing this service.
    Thanks in advance

If it is the hinge that is cracking below the display then it is likely the hinge cracking issue.
There is a support article that discusses this, it might be worth having a look on the support site.
It also explains that it is covered for three years from original date of purchase, so it is likely that your MacBook air might not be covered for this service.
The repair extension program would almost be ready to expire by now.

  • Apple macbook air hinge defect -closing lid is considered accidental damage

    Hi Apple
Is closing the screen normal operations of the macbook air?
my apple air has a defect with the hinge. could apple please change your policy to accept hinge as warrant on apple air models
purchased my air 28/2/2008 from Sydney Broadway apple shop. I think this was the first day they got delivery in Sydney.
Last week when closing the screen, it was about half way down, it made a crack noise, and the hinge moved. (see photo from link below)
I have been to two apple care centres in Saigon, Vietnam this week. Spoke to apple in singapore and usa. They all told me i broke it and the damage is accidental. Offically on paper it was "it might be accidental damage, warranty repair declined"
Many people have had this problem, mostly in USA.
Below is the link to a post i made on the problem. It has a photo of my laptop hinge, it is not as bad as others, because i stopped using the air as soon as it happened

PS. Apple Air is the BEST laptop yet for me personally. light, 13" screen, full size keyboard, multitouch huge touch pad, nice casing, no dvd player and osx
    I have owned these laptops:
    compact portable iii
    dell latitude d600
    toshiba portege 3500 tablet
    fujitsu lifebook p7010
    motion ls800 tablet
    apple macbook air

If I can add my two cents... Mine broke just like the others on this thread, and almost like everybody else, the first genius I consulted with told me that it was accidental damage and that they won't cover it. I left the Apple Store and called Apple customer service, explained the situation, including the fact a 1800 $ computer shouldn't broke without reason, that there was multiple people on the internet with the same problem... a few days later, Apple called me to say that they will cover the display change under warranty. Still, i'm not impressed :
    - The attitude of the first genius was very arrogant, telling me that I shouldn't try to "steal from Apple" by trying to cover accidental damage...
    - When I got my MacBook Air back, the genius told me that they did put a new hinge design in there, which feels much more sturdy indeed. So if Apple changed the hinge design, they know there was a problem with the hinge, but they still won't change your failed hinge unless you complain : what kind of customer service is that ?
I'm feeling a class action over those first gen MacBook Air, really... 1800 $ gets you a computer that doesn't perform (kernel_task problem), with failing hardware (hinge defect).
By the way... mine have also a decoloration of the trackpad that Apple won't cover because they say it's "cosmetic". How ironic from a company who charge big preniums for design not to cover "cosmetic" issues.

  • Macbook Air 13" Screen Crack - Will it break the computer?

Just yesterday I noticed a small crack in the left bottom corner of my Macbook Air 13" (2011). In the last day it has already started to get a bit worse with a small crack that extends a couple vertical and horizontal lines a couple of inches.
My question is, I am about to travel for several months and don't really have time to get it fixed. Can the crack in the screen cause the laptop itself to malfunction? Even if it gets worse, as long as I can still use it I can be patient, but I don't want it to die on me while I am travelling!!!

The damage is likely to remain confined to the display, but the display itself will likely worsen. It could range from just a longer crack, to overall failure of the display.  I've not heard of a cracked display "causing" collateral damage.

  • New Macbook Air 11" 2014 Model Display Hinge Loose and exacerbated by extremely poor service

I have bought a new MacBook Air 11 from Ezone on the 3rd of October.  When I opened the product, I realised that the hinge seemed to be loose and would fall back on its own when tilted. That's when my troubles started.
I went to the Maple Apple Authorised Service Center at Santa Cruz, Mumbai and was told that the product was fine and that the screen tilt was 'normal'.
I then happened to visit some other stores and noticed that the MacBooks on display didn't swing back the same way.
I returned to the Service Center again and was told again that it was 'normal'. When I demanded to see the manager, I was told he had left for the day. I rang him and was told that I should come and see him the next day and he would provide a speedy resolution to the problem.
I rang the store that I'd purchased it from and they told me that they would be happy to replace the product provided the service center gave a certificate called DOA.
The next day was an even more harrowing experience. When I reached the manager's office, he tried telling me again that the product was 'normal'. When I explained to him that none of the in store models were like that, he said that to give the certificate, he would need at least 2 days as there was a 'process' to be followed. The 'process' is to merely record how the display flips back when tilted back.
I tried to call Apple Customer Care and spoke to Nishant and then Ravi (who told me that he usually never spoke to customers directly but as a special case was speaking to me since I'd had a bad experience!).
Ravi, assured me of a ideal resolution within 24 hours.
And so today, I received a call from Nishant, who informed me that because of the nature of the inconvenience, Apple had decided to offer 2 solutions: 1. They would ship a new machine from Singapore directly to my home address but that would take 4-5 business weeks. I was fine with that solution although I didn't understand the merit of sending a new laptop from Singapore. However, he then told me that I would FIRST have to submit the laptop and ONLY THEN would they ship it out to me. So essentially, I would be without a laptop for next month and a half! In short, a ridiculous solution. 2. The second solution was that I would have to give my BRAND NEW laptop (less than 2 weeks old!) to the service centre, they would repair it and return it in a few days. So we were back to square one. When I tried to understand the escalation process, I was curtly told that there was no escalation and this was Apple's response and resolution to my problem.
So, I, the unhappy customer, was given no choice except to turn  in my machine to the service centre whereas, GLOBALLY, Apple would have replaced the machine if it was less than 2 weeks old!
Absolutely pathetic experience with no keenness to help except have longwinded calls that provided no solution whatsoever.
And this to a customer who's just bought a brand new machine and is expecting a spectacular experience! Even Lenovo or Sony offer onsite support, so the Apple experience is a terrible, terrible letdown.
I feel cheated and downright stupid for having paid such a premium for a product with manufacturing defect followed with such extraordinarily poor service!

  • MacBook Air hinges broken

Anyone have any suggestions on repairing the broken hinges on a MacBook Air?  The cheap plastic hinges on mine have broken and the monitor is about to fall off.  Does anyone know why this obvious design flaw is not being covered under a warranty and have any suggestions of what to do?  Everything else about the computer runs great so I don't need or want to buy a new computer because of a design flaw.  Thanks for your help.

Ask Apple why it isn't covered. We as fellow users can not give you a definitive answer.

  • 2008 Macbook Air Screen Hinge Problem

Hi all, so my 2008 Macbook Air's hinge got a little loose, and I was told Apple would replace it for free, so I took it to them. HUGE MISTAKE. After the hinge was replaced the screen didn't fully line up when the laptop was closed and the screen started going out like once every 2 weeks, but only for like a tenth of a second so I never really thought it was a problem. It never did this before Apple fixed the loose hinge. About 6 months after the hinge was replaced, it started doing it daily, and shortly after that it did it every time I open the laptop, so now it officially is a problem for me. I brought it back to Apple and they told me that I would have to pay for an expensive new repair or buy a new laptop, even after I explained to them that the laptop was perfectly fine before they replaced the hinge. They said I should have come within 3 months, but I was back at school and it was not a problem at all then, nor did I think it would be. I brought it to a 3rd party repair shop and they did not open the laptop but they said it looks like the screen cable is being pinched by the new hinge since it is not lined up perfectly. Is there anything that can be done or do I have to buy a new laptop?

I'm a college student with no car or Apple store nearby and the laptop was shipped back to me because of that. If I had to go another week without a laptop that would have been disasterous, but more importantly I had no way of knowing it would stop working or that the slight misalignment was anything other than cosmetic, I'm no tech genius and I clearly wasn't the one who put the laptop together wrong. It wasn't even my fault the hinge got loose in the first place! Sigh, I suppose if they can't make this right I hope I can learn to use Windows.

  • Crack sound Macbook Air 2013

    Hello,
i've got a problem(if we can call it) with my Macbook Air 2013(bought on july 2013).
when i type,i usually put my hands on the surface right next to the pad.
i do not apply any forces or put all the weight on the surface but it sounds like a crack or something similar.
and i also see that the surface goes down for a few mm.
    thanks
    Alberto

your touchpad is probably cracked... get it repaired by the guys at apple.

  • Macbook Air hinges question

just got the Decoded leather cover for my Macbook Air (which is just beautiful with no covers!)
it got a leather and elastic straps that won't let the lid close completely (few mm gaps)
asy idea if this would harm or loosen the lid hinges over time?

A: it wont let the lid close , I can tell that by looking without you telling me that that is so.
it can keep the unit from going into sleep because the magnetic reed switch isnt making contact with the magnet in the display to activate it.
if there is any hinge torque when close due to the gap from squeezing it while closed at the opening point, there could be an issue, but that requires firsthand examination, which I cannot see.
