Cracked my 13inch macbook pro screen

The other day, I had a migraine (another story) and due to my unclear vision i stepped on my silver macbook pro 13 inch. Now I remember hearing a crack but being completely delusional and in huge amounts of pain I didnt acknowledge anything. Now later on I go to turn on my laptop and I see a massive crack in the left bottom part with cracks that spread all over the screen. The visuals however are fine and I can see everything perfectly well, (no blotche or lines due to LED damage) However this crack is very annoying and I want it fixed. Due to previous research everyone seems to state that screen rreplacement is ludicrous at APPLE and its almost worth getting a new laptop.
Can I just replace the kind of glass thing or plastic or material in front of the screen or is it as I fear that the WHOLE upper part of my mac is replaced. How much will this cost me and can I get it on any insurance? Equally, will all my information remain on my laptop and stored there so when it's fixed I can go back to using it as per usual AND if i were to get this replacement, how long would it take to be fixed and ready to go because I have approximately 7/8 days in which I can take it to APPLE to be repaired before it needs to be back with me again.
If I dont use apple, are other repair companies an option? Are they safe and will they not damage my laptop more?!

Well if your past warranty, and dont have applecare. Take it to apple store, if they want crazy price to fix, Id take it to somewhere else and see if they can fix it. I mean, even if they did manage to break it, your really not out anything, since itll probably make more sense to buy a new one rather than have apple fix it, if ya know what I mean.
If you have home owners insurance, that may cover it. Depends on your specific policy.

Crack in MacBook Pro Screen

Hello,
I am not entirely sure how it happened, but in the right corner of the glass of my 13" MacBook Pro screen there is a crack stretching down to the bottom of that portion of the screen. There is nothing wrong with any other part of the screen, just the crack in the glass.
I intend to get it fixed before I head back to school in the fall but I was wondering a couple things;
1. I have the Apple Care Extended Warranty, is there any chance repairs would be covered?
2. If repairs aren't covered, around how much should I expect to spend to get it fixed through Apple?

Probably not what you want to hear, but I doubt it would be covered as it was likely caused by some kind of physical trauma. AC doesn't cover that. But there's always a chance, and only Apple can decide, so I'd certainly ask. Sorry, I don't know anything about cost. Good luck to you.

My MacBook Pro screen doesn't turn on when I the open lid.

So I bought my 13inch MacBook Pro Retina two weeks ago. 70% of the time when opening the lid the screen will not turn on but my keyboard backlight will. I then have to either close the lid and open again or press the power to put the system to sleep and wake again. It seems the system is working fine just not the screen.
I have tried the SMC and PRAM reset which seemed to work for half of the day, now the problem is back.
Has anybody got a solution for this or are in fact experiencing the same problem?

You've 90 days of free phone support from date of purchase and - at least - a one year warranty on the computer (free phone support and warranty for three years if you purchased AppleCare). The behavior that you're experiencing is not normal - if I were you, I would get on the phone to Apple and have them make you a 'genius bar' appointment.

Would a crack in the MacBook Pro display cause a similar "fade-to-white" symptom as a bad graphics processor?

A cracked screen (LCD) or the glass that covers the LCD? I'm a little confused what is cracked? Is your LCD operating with the crack?

2.2ghz macbook pro screen

Hi, my macbook pro screen cracked after 8 days. I bought a replacement screen brand new online. I have 2 questions, first my machine is the 2.2ghz macbook pro that was 1999.99 list price. Is the screen I purchased the correct one? its model number M9969LL/A and approximately how much labor time should I expect to pay for to re-install this?
Is it true that apple does not cover these? The machine did not drop or anything and there is no damage to it. There is just a black circle then a spider web of glass on the inside and then all the pixels have turned to colored lines.

I have the Early 2011 2GHz Macbook Pro and I have the same problem too.
I switched out the logicboard a month ago and today the graphics just went distorted.
Any solutions? Now I'm thinking it is the Graphics Card.

Can't decide on 13inch MacBook Pro or 15inch

II'm seeking some advice on whether to go for purchasing a 13inch MacBook Pro retina or 15inch MacBook Pro retina.
A few factors need to be considered:
My preference is for the smaller form factor of the 13inch
My preference for a quad core
My preference for 16gb ram
My preference is for i7
CIrca 80% + of files will be saved on a WD MybookWorld 2Tb external drive
To provide an understanding of intended use thus will be:
General web browsing. 60%
LIghtroom and Photoshop, for DSLR photo editing 20%
ITunes/music 10%
Creating/editing word documents and spreadsheets 10%
Im aware that apple do not do a 13inch quad core, and have concerns that the dual core may not be enough for my usage?
Finally regarding my budget I do not wish to spend anything more that $2499, based on the current cost of a 15-inch: 2.5GHz with Retina display
If the advice from the community is that I can get away with a setup lower than $2499 then that will be a bonus.

The issue of "future proofing" in getting a quad core 15inch is attractive, but I like the 13inch form factor and also want to reduce costs if possible. However no quad core 13inch option is a disappointment.

For video editing I recommend 15". You will be happy you have the extra screen real estate. I also recommend buying with minimum installed ram then upgrade with 3rd party ram to 16GB. If you opt for the retina display order it with 16GB ram.

Translucent impromptu possible "hacker" message interrupts current session, locks MacBook Pro screen and demands that I restart by holding down the power button of my LapTop to turn it off first. Any thought? Could this be another way to mess with us?

I was listening to a YouTube video on the history of X15 rocket airplanes. All of sudden, out of the blue a translucent back message drops top down, stops the video, locks up my MacBook Pro screen and demands that I restart my lapTop by first holding down my power switch, then turn the lapTop back on. This has never happened to me before. The message was in black & white, and in about 6 languages: English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese, Chinese. Does any one recognize what this might be?
The Computer turned back on just fine as if nothing had Now I am freeking out that they could be reading my key strokes or something. Could they have used this tactic to install malicious software on my computer by first taking away my ability to do anything about it being that I am not a software engineer? Can any one think of anything simillar? I reported this as a bug to APPLE the regular way, then cleared my Safari cookies, then run software update which returned nothing new as in " your software is up to date at this time."

Cleaning MacBook Pro screens

Does anyone know if it is safe to use Kensington's Screen Guardian to clean a MacBook Pro screen? The product contains: Water, 2-Butoxyethanol and Ethanol. Also can this cleaner be used on an iMac and a iPod Touch screens. Thanks for your help.

Apple recommends against using any cleaner with alcohol or ammonia to clean any LCD screen. Those chemicals may damage the screen coating. The best way to clean a laptop screen is to use a microfiber wipe (such as those sold to clean eyeglasses) or a damp ( not wet) soft lint-free cloth. For more information, see:

Butyl cellusolve, a component of Screen Guardian (according to their material safety data sheet), is neurotoxic among other toxicities, by the way, so I'd avoid it even if it weren't risky on LCDs.

Comparing MacBook Pro screen with Intel iMac

I'm wondering if anyone here that has a MacBook Pro has had a chance to compare its quality to another mac's screen. I've been working on trying to colour-calibrate my MacBook Pro using SuperCal, and I've noticed that the colour on the MacBook Pro is nowhere near as nice as on the intel iMac.
Obviously expecting a laptop screen to look as good as the larger iMacs is a bit much, but I was still very surprised at the difference in quality.
Anyone else noticed this?

The MacBook Pro screen is not as bright or vibrant as any plug-in type LCD I've compared it to.
However, it is much nicer than any of my previous laptops (including an Aluminum Powerbook G4). It is significantly brighter, with somewhat better color.
It would be nice if the laptop had a better backlight that could turn on when plugged in, but that's probably up there with my wish for a 2nd processor that would turn on during plug-in as well...

I would like to install 2*4G which is 8GB RAM with 1333mhz DDR3 on a 13inch MacBook Pro mid 2009 2.26 GHZ and the bus speed is 1067mhz, now how would I install this type of RAM or must I rather spend more money for a 1067mhz DDR3 2*4GB=8GB RAM.

You have to spend money and buy 1066 MHz for your Mid 2009 MacBook Pro. If you try to use 1333 MHz RAM with your Mac, it may not boot and start beeping, showing that you have incompatible RAM.

Macbook pro screen dims after waking from sleep?

Does anyone know why my macbook pro screen dims when waking from sleep or waking from my screen saver? I can't get it to stop doing this. Thanks.

It sounds like I have the same thing happening. It's more like the colors are washed out, like there is less contrast. I have a hot corner set up for my screen saver. Once I activate the screen saver for a second and then deactivate it, the Macbook screen goes back to normal. I have a 30" Samsung 305T monitor set up as a second (main) screen for when I'm working at home, which is most of the time. I haven't had it unplugged from the Macbook since this started, so I don't know if it happens by itself. I do know that the Samsung looks fine when waking up from the screen saver at the same time.
I tried to find others with this problem in this forum, but got tired of looking through all the other posts that had nothing to do with this problem.
Can anyone help us?

Macbook Pro Screen wakes up from sleep without any acitvity

I've set my MacBook Pro screen to turn off after two minutes of activity. I've had this setting for all my Macs and I've never had any problems.
Recently though, my MacBook Pro's screen turns on by itself without me touching the computer or any mouse attached to it. What could be the problem?
It's really annoying when the screen turns on at night.
Any help will be appreciated.

I have the same problem. I brought up console and there is nothing at the same time as the screen turning on. My situation is as follows:
I put on a podcast. The only applications running are firefox and iTunes. I turn the screen brightness all the way down with the F1 key, then mouse over the corner of the screen set to turn the monitor off.
After about 6 minutes, the screen comes back on at brightness level 1. If I touch a button or the trackpad the screen turns back off. It stays off for about 6 more minutes and does it again.
Edit: I just checked the logs with all showing and the only thing I see is a Wake Reason = EC LID0.
Any tips?

You misunderstand the memory management scheme and misinterpret the display you're seeing.
To start with, free memory is wasted memory. Once some disk contents have been brought in, it is wasteful to discard that data just to make the RAM that it occupied "free." Inactive memory is memory that is not currently used, can be given to an application that needs it without doing any disk I/O (or used as a destination for reading disk content) but which currently holds disk data that might be useful in the future. I.e., it's file content of some sort.
To get a better idea of how Mac OS X manages RAM and how to interpret the Activity Monitory dispaly, see this tech note: Mac OS X: Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor.
Rosetta is indeed memory hungry, but it's an interim solution. With 2 GB of RAM installed, you can run a lot of applications with alacrity.
Lastly, your Safari, an Intel-native application, is currently using 2 GB. This is a known issue with Safari, though it seems to me that it has gotten better since 2.0.3 was released in 10.4.6. Still, it's a bit of a memory hog, to be sure. Now that Firefox, Camino and Seamonkey are all available in Universal (Intel native) forms, you have alternatives. Firefox seems a lot more parsimonious when it comes to RAM.
