Cracked screen on mac book pro

I have a macbook pro that I bought new back in 2006. My neice dropped something on the top and cracked the screen. I actually haven't used it much bc I had a work computer but I have recently returned to film school and I need a mac. The point is that they are telling me it will be 800 dollars to have it fixed and I am wanting some mac users opinions as to whether I should have it fixed or get a regular mac book for just a few hundred more. Any opinions?

[PowerBookMedic|http://www.powerbookmedic.com/LCD-Display-Replacements-p-1-c-503 .html] has screen replacements at $300 and $350 for the 15" and 17" MBP's respectively, which you can install yourself if you're handy with tools and want to save. They also have very good How-To guides.

  • Black screen on Mac Book Pro 17(late 2011)

Mac Book Pro 17 (late 2011), Model A1297, MD311LL/A, 2.4 quad.core i7/2x2 GB/750-5400, Running OSX Maverick 10.9.4.  One day OK, next day a black screen.  Tried soft reboot, nothing.  Computer acts like it is on (keyboard lights up), and white light on front pulses as if in hibernation mode, battery is at 95%. all AC plugs ok.  Nothing external to this computer. Can you help?  Linda, [email protected]

    First, I would try:
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If that does not help then try booting the computer from the Recovery HD. If it still does not work then there is a hardware failure. Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • Gray screen on Mac Book Pro 2009

Help I'm having problems with my mac book pro 17" 2009.  I started with the mac behaving unusally cutting off and taking a long time to restart. then it would not restart at all.  I was able to get it to start by resetting the SMC, but after doing that I ended up with a gray screen, athe apple logo, a spinning wheel and a bar at the bottom, I've tries resetting the PRAm, but the same thing happens. also tried starting it by holding down the option key, which took me to disk utility but I'm not sure if I did that cocrrectly.  Any other suggestions.  I have read multilple article on Apple support and other web sites, so links to them aren't much help.

Sounds like a internal Board issue, Take it in to the nearest Apple Store, They will fix it there.

  • Dual flat \screens with mac book pro

does anyone know if it is possible to utilize side by side monitors simultaneously with the intel mac book pro?

    A VTBook may work <http://www.villagetronic.com/vtbook/index.html>
Another option is to use a Mac Pro 7300 PCI-Express graphics board with the Express Card to PCI-Express adapter

  • Frozen on Screen Saver - Mac Book Pro Retina, precursor to something bad?

My Macbook Pro Retina, 10.8.2, went into Screen Saver mode, "Shifting Tiles", while I way away from my computer. Upon my return I was meet with a black screen and where the images for the "shifting tiles" would be were black boxes with an oily rainbow outline around each image box.
The boxes weren't moving at all, not shifting like "Shifting Tiles" would.
Computer wouldn't wake even when I left it alone for a couple minutes. Had to hard shutdown my computer by holding down the power key.
I've turned off Screensavers all together, but am worried this might just be a precursor to something worse. Computers barely 4 months old.
Any helpful advice or thoughts would be a apperciated.
    Thanks.

The answer you accepted as a solution is absolutely false. Not only do you not need to purchase ML, but the App Store version will not install on your computer.
There is no need for you to create a standalone installer. In the very unlikely event that you ever need to reinstall the OS, you can do it by booting into Recovery or Internet Recovery.
OS X: About OS X Recovery
If you insist on creating a standalone installer anyway, follow these instructions:
Create a bootable Lion install drive for newer Macs
The instructions are outdated, but should still work.

  • Screen Problem Mac Book Pro 15 "2 / 3 of the bottom seems to be dead

Hello everyone and thank you in advance for your help.
This week, I opened my laptop and 2 / 3 of the bottom screen were flat charcoal. I was only able to use 1 / 3 of my screen at the top .. I had to restart the computer 4 times before everything returns to normal. I arrive at home in the evening, same thing.
I looked in the 180 pages of MacBook Pro's screen related problems on this forum and nobody seems to have had this problem before me Yesterday morning, I made an appointment with a Mac Genuise at AppleStore.. Just before to leave I tried to open the computer and everything was fine, so the problem seems to be intermitant.... I've restarted it 6 times and everything as OK.. (GRrrrr..) So I did'nt went to see the Mac Genuise.
This morning, I open my computer telling me that the problem was probably left as if magically. Nope, I still have to restart it 3 times before to be able to use the computer ..
Is somebody have an idea of what the problem could be ?
    Thanks
By the way, sorry for my English, I'm French!

    Hi Mathieu,
I am having the same problem.
I initially thought it was the graphics card, however the interesting thing is that the mouse pointer also dies after about a minute. The last time it happened, I attached a second screen to the MBP, and turned on mirroring. Almost immediately theMBP screen came back. This means that it is more likely a driver bug. It took me a while to find this thread, but I figured based on what I found that I couldn't be alone. It also never happened until I upgraded to Leopard....
At least you know you're not alone.

  • Gray screen on mac book pro

So to begin with my Macbook Pros screen is broken so ive been connecting it to my Tv to use it. I recently upgraded my laptop to Yosemite and everything was working just fine. But one of the times I went to turn it on all i see is a gray screen on my Tv. I have a feeling there is a promt onmy laptop screen asking me to do something but there is no way for me to see it since the screen is broken. Does anybody know a way around this or any idea what the promt might be asking so that i can try to click my way around and answer it. Thank you

  • Print Screen on Mac Book Pro running Windows Vista

How do I use the keyboard to capture a screen print? There is a way when in the Apple operating system, but I can't find one while I am in windows

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
on a MacBook keyboard there is no specific key for PrintScreen in Windows.
You can however use InputRemapper http://www.olofsson.info/index.html?inputremapper.html to remap the PrintScreen function to a key-combo (default in InputRemapper for this is fn+eject-key).

  • Rolling screen on mac book pro

My screen has begun rolling from the bottom up.
I occurs just in the open page - not the menu bar. Sometimes it will stop - like when I open my gmail or anothe web page. It will not stop when I try to compose an email or when I have to fill in a form in Ancestry.com. But, interestingly, it's fine filling in this form.
    Any ideas?
