i cracked the screen on my lumia 820 and can no longer enter my password. is there a way i can access my photos from the device? even when i connect it to my computer it still requests the phone be unlocked which i can no longer do. any suggestions? thanks in advance

You could try hard resetting it as follows. With the phone powered off, press and hold the vol down +power+ camera buttons. When the phone vibrates, release the power button and release the remaining two buttons 5 seconds after that.

Screen Saver Password Protection - Security Flaw

Although I have always felt OS X has been a solid and secure operating system, there continues to remain one painful, and blatant security flaw. I keep thinking that Apple will address the issue, but they certainly haven't done so thus far.
Explanation:
With any good security policy, and in any secure environment, there will always be a need to "lock" (password protect) a system when not in use. That is, after 'X' period of time, the user interface is password protected so as not to allow access to the system while not in use. This is probably the most common and fundamental security measure in any environment. However, Apple's (GUI) password protection falls short in a number of ways. The only current method of password protecting the user interface is through the Screen Saver. Although at a glance it appears functional, it is a poor design and is easy to disable.
The screen saver configuration lies within two files; the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.<variable>.plist. It is especially important to note that both of these files are located in the users home folder, which gives them full access to the configuration files. There is absolutely nothing preventing a user from deleting these files, and thus, disabling the only mechanism to password protect the user interface. Giving the user the ability to disable or remove ANY security related configuration is a poor design.
Now initially we thought we had a solution by setting the user immutable flag on the ByHost screen saver plist using chflags. This would still allow user access, but would prohibit them from deleting the ByHost plist. Well, it sounded good in theory. However, if ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist is deleted, you can say goodbye to your password protected screen saver, despite locking the screen saver plist. So naturally the idea occurred to me to set the user immutable flag on ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist. This works, but makes it impossible to modify the Dock. Needless to say, if the Dock can't be modified, there's no point in even having it.
Now that isn't the only thing wrong with the screen saver password protection. You would expect that an administrator could unlock a users (password protected) screen saver, but you would also assume that the user was logged off as a result. Not in this case... If an admin unlocks a password protected screen saver for a user, they are now logged in as that user and have access to everything the user was doing when it was locked (email, spreadsheets, confidential information... anything). This is not the preferred method. If for some reason an admin needs to unlock a password protected screen saver, it should log off that user, not allow access to the user's session.
Finally, the biggest flaw yet. With a recent update, the password protection doesn't even work, as indicated by several people in the following threads.

I have personally seen this issue while developing our corporate OS X image. Despite any fix or workaround, the simple fact that this has occurred is disturbing. ...As if the design wasn't bad enough, it now has the potential to stop working entirely.
Now don't get me wrong, I love OS X and prefer to work on it over any other operating system. Nonetheless, the current design for the "screen lock" is inadequate at best. For a large enterprise environment with stringent security requirements, it's far from sufficient. My hope in posting this is that someone from Apple acknowledges the design flaw and incorporates a more effective solution into the next OS.

One thing I forgot to mention is that "Workgroup Manager.app" is a part of the "Server Admin Tools" which can be downloaded free from Apple. Although it seems to be primarily intended to be used to configure OS X Server from an OS X Client machine, many of its functions can be used to configure the OS X Client machine itself, in the complete absence of OS X Server. Unfortunately, the 'mcx_settings' aren't really "image friendly" - as far as using them on OS X client is concerned, they are something that seem to need to be applied to user accounts individually (although it is possible to copy all of the settings at once so it isn't necessary to go through the whole configuration process for each setting for each user). I have tried tinkering and applying them to groups, but group members don't seem to automatically be restricted (I may be missing something). The "tools" are available here:

I don't know if it would be any better than the screen saver "hot corner", but there is an option to lock the screen from the "Keychain Access" menu extra, which can normally be enabled through "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Keychain Access.app", from its "Preferences". This setting is then stored in the "com.apple.systemuiserver.plist" file (ie independent of the "Dock"), but could in principle be controlled from 'mcx_settings' as well. The level of control seems to be incomplete - the user can still drag the item off of the menu bar, but it returns during the next login. However, it does provide convenient access to a method to lock the screen and keychains, and has a nice "padlock" icon so that its function is obvious. It is also potentially possible to assign a two-step keyboard shortcut to the "Lock Screen" item, but it would be somewhat less convenient than a direct key combo...
One other note regarding the "admin" user's ability to unlock the screensaver. The configuration file allowing the "admin" user to do this is "/etc/authorization", under 'system.login.screensaver'. Currently, the "rule" is set to 'authenticate-session-owner-or-admin'. Changing it to 'authenticate-session-owner' would be expected to remove the "admin" user's ability to unlock the screensaver, and if "Fast user switching" is available, the "admin", being unable to authenticate, should be able to switch to the "login window" from the authentication dialogue. I haven't tested this at all in "Tiger", but in "Panther", there was apparently a problem with it (which is why it had slipped my mind since at the time it was rejected as a viable option) - the person who posts here as "LittleSaint" had mentioned some problem with user logins when set up that way but I don't remember what it was, and so can't test if it has been fixed in "Tiger" (not very reassuring, and I apologize). And again, this is a setting that an "admin" would be able to reverse for themselves. Also, should "Fast user switching" become disabled for some reason, and the screen saver kicks in and the user isn't available, it might be a hassle to get back into the machine (it might be possible to do something over ssh). Nevertheless, it might be something to look in to.

My screen got cracked of Nokia Lumia 820

I have a Nokia Lumia 820 and its front glass got cracked. My display is alright but my touch is not working on the crack but elsewhere on the screen touch is working fine can someone tell me the problem and its cost. I am living in India.

You will need to contact Nokia Care in your area, they will provide a quote for replacing the screen. It's impossible to say what it will cost because each authorised repairer will provide a quote that includes both the components needed and their labour cost for carrying out the work, so just see the Microsoft web site for your country and you'll find information on how to get the phone fixed in the support pages.

Marks underneath screen of Lumia 820

Ive had my NNokia Lumia 820 approx 4-5 weeks and though Ive got no software problems with the phone, about a week ago, I noticed what looked like smudge marks on the underneath of the screen, at the top under the speaker and in the bottom left corner of the screen, about a third of the way up. I just happened to notice in the daylight today and have noticed that the marks are growing in sixe, especially the one in the bottom left corner, nearly halfway across the screen. I suspect its a build quality issue as Ive never had this issue with a phone before. I was wondering if anyone else has had the same issue?

Here you go. Forgot about my work blackberry, which has a flash which showed it up quite nicely. Perhaps the other guys can confirm if this is the same as their's.
I'm starting to think it's actually an imperfection in the front of the screen, rather than behind. If you scrub quite hard with a cloth you can get rid of it (mostly), but as soon as your finger goes over that area it's back. Like that part of the screen has imperfections that cause it to smudge/stay smudged more than the rest of the surface. Just a hypothesis, probably wrong. Unless it gets worse I'm not too bothered about it.

Can I password protect Sleep mode without protecting the screen saver too?

I don't want to enter a password for the screen saver (I'd have to do it 500 times a day). A password for waking from sleep mode only would be very helpful.

Bit of touch screen not working Lumia 820

Hello!
A couple of months ago I bought a Nokia Lumia 820. And after a while I broke the digitizer. Got a new one and replaced it myself. The problem now is that the digitizer now does not work properly, a bit of it doesnt work, the second line on a keyboard when the phone is positioned upward. I have read somewhere that this could mean a faulty digitizer, but the thing is when I use the nokia search button on the lower rigth corner of the phone that activates the bing search the whole screen works fine and I can even input the pin code.
So my question is this can this be a software problem rather than hardware, because I really dont want to buy a new digitizer and then realize that the new one wont work either. Or could I have made an error when I was replacing the digitizer.

It's a hardware issue, either a faulty digitizer or you damaged something when fitting it.

Can't activate password-protected screen saver

I use my MacBook for sensitive data, so I always make sure to "lock" my screen with a password-protected screen saver when I walk away from my desk. Normally, there are several ways to do this:
1. Wait for the screen saver to come on due to inactivity.
2. Set a "hot corner" for the screen saver and move the mouse to that corner.
3. Enable the keychain menu bar icon and choose "Lock Screen" from the menu bar. (This is my preferred method.)
Under normal conditions, any of these three methods will activate the screen saver.
However, sometimes when I've been running my computer for a while (several days) without rebooting, all three of these methods simultaneously *stop working*. The "lock screen" menu option does nothing, the screen saver hot corner does nothing, and the computer fails to activate the screen saver on its own after the predefined period of inactivity.
Oddly, I can still activate the screen saver by using the "Test" button in the screen saver preferences pane, but in that case it's not password protected, so that doesn't help.
A reboot solves the problem, but this usually happens when I have a bunch of stuff open and it's not a convenient time to reboot. Plus, after a reboot, the problem still recurs a few days later.

A few of those users found workarounds, but they seemed to be experiencing something different from what I'm describing here. Those who were describing the same symptoms I am still don't seem to have found a solution.
Incidentally, I am not running Spaces or Parallels, nor am I using an external monitor, all of which have been suspected in other threads as the culprit. Quitting all open apps doesn't seem to help either.
The issue seems to be limited to one account at a time; if I switch into another account while having this problem, the other account won't have problems starting its screen saver, but switching back doesn't resolve the issue for the first account. A reboot does.
Can anyone shed some light on this or offer another workaround? Or is this just an ongoing bug?

We are both admin - but I would of assumed each could only unlock it's own user password protected screen saver.

The option to switch to the loginwindow only appears if the "Fast User Switching" GUI is enabled in the "Accounts" pref pane. If that option were to be disabled and eg. a user on a shared computer went home without logging out, in the absence of "admin" access, that computer would be entirely unusable to other users short of pulling the plug, which might interrupt any background operations in progress.
I suppose the behaviour could be alterred depending on the "FUS" status, but really, what would be the point since, as you acknowledge, an "admin" user ultimately has the ability to access an open session anyway?
For reference, note that "admin" users, in addition to the "session owner" are granted the right to unlock the screen in the "/private/etc/authorization" file under the 'system.login.screensaver' key so the behaviour can be adjusted from there.

Lumia 820 Screen Unable to Power Up

Hi,
I'm facing this problem and I've been trying to debug the issue for the past few hours of whereby the screen will not power up but the phone is definitely working(the buttons will lit when I press the power button, the phone will ring and vibrate when I call it, there will be a sound when I take a screenshot, and the phone will vibrate when my phone receives an email).
I was using this app http://www.windowsphone.com/fi-fi/store/app/the-ssh-client/e8aa1299-e011-486c-9f61-3232c892b17b before the screen failed to start(but I've used this app for quite a while before in other days and nothing happened).
Phone Condition:
1. Screen is not turned on(failed to start)
2. Phone is working(read above)
3. My computer(Win 7) can detect the device, but there are no files inside the Lumia 820 drive(there are files inside it before that).
4. Battery was ~50% when it had problems and now its ~29%
Things that I've tried:
1. Soft Reset - Holding Decrease volume button + Power Button
2. Holding all four buttons
3. Holding power button(weird, but this doesn't seem to reboot the device anymore)
Things that I have not tried:
1. Flash it
2. Charge it
Well, any other viable solutions?

Did you try this key combination for your 4 button reset?
Step 1- Make sure the charger is disconnected.1. Switch the power Off.2. Press and hold the Volume down and connect the charger, if succeed an exclamation mark (!) is shown on the screen.
Step 2 - Then input the keys in the following order:1. Volume up2. Volume down3. Power4. Volume down
Step 3 - The phone will reset and boot up automatically. Please note that this may take several minutes.
Please note you will lose all data doing this.
If the above doesn't work then it is likely a hardware issue and you should have it checked out at your local Nokia Care Poibt.

No. The AppleCare extended warranty only doubles to time to a total of two years and extends the time of free telephone support. It still excludes accidental damage like what cases a cracked screen.
