Cracking and popping over FireWire

Audio or videos files played back with QuickTime over my FireWire connection are accompanied by quite a bit of cracking and popping. The crackling is not heard during quiet portions of the file. The format of the file doesn’t seem to matter (.mov, .wav, etc.). I can play back the same files over FireWire with other playback software, like VLC, and the problem disappears.
Interestingly, this problem with QT also disappears when listening with headphones plugged into the jack on my mac. In other words, the problem only occurs when I use QT and pipe the output through FireWire.
My FireWire goes into a mixer, an Onyx-1220i and from there gets piped into my studio speakers using the "Control Room Out" jacks.
Listen closely to the link for a sample recorded directly from my studio speakers using my iPhone: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15366433/Recording.m4a
I have a MacBook Pro Retina (2012 model).

  • Cracking and popping has returned with version 4.3.5

I just updated to 4.3.5 and the popping and cracking is back.  This is so annoying.  A $300 iPod and have crap sound quality when using it in the car.  I didn't have the issue with the cracking and popping when 4.3.4 was on the iPod.  Can I go back to 4.3.4 on my Touch?  This is unexcusable for such a high dollar mp3 player to have the same problem over and over and over.  Hopefully Apple will get this taken care of.

You do see the devices heading on the left sidebar? If you don't see the sidebar, go to View>Show sidebar in the iTunes menu and then check to see if the device appears.
If that isn't the problem, go through the troubleshooting steps. It could be the Apple Mobile Device Service issue.

  • Cracking and popping noise Sound Blaster x-Fi Platinum Running on Windows 7 32 Bit

Hi everyone, I am using a x-fi platinum card and it simply wont work with Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bit. I have been using both windows 7 public beta and release candidate for last 8 months. Let me give you my PC configuration.
    Intel Pentium D 3.4GHz
2GB DDR2 Memory running in Dual Channel Mode
ATI Radeon HD 4670 Video Card With 52MB DDR3
It has a built in sound on mother board (Disabled at the moment)
With the above configuration I tried using my x-fi platinum on both Windows XP and Windows Vista, and it worked perfectly without any problem. When I upgraded to windows 7 beta for the first time with the creative beta driver for windows 7, I noticed that whenever there is any on screen activity, such as minimizing and maximizing windows, switching windows, scrolling, photo or webpage transition, etc. there are cracking and popping noises. And if there are continuous or too much activity on the screen at some times the sound card completely fails and unable to provide any sound. When I took the sound card out and enabled the on board audio chip (Realtek HD Audio), the sound was fine without any cracking or popping issue. I eventually upgraded to Windows 7 RC and also currently using the latest driver for windows 7 and I am still having the same problem. As a reasult I am being forced to use the on board realtek audio solution which provides really crappy sound compared to x-fi platinum.
It appears that the problem exists only when I try to run x-fi platinum on windows 7. I really hope there is a solution for this otherwise I will have to sell my beloved sound card which I have been using for at least 3 years on ebay and stick with low quality Realtek HD sound system.

Not all of them, I have none of those problems with my Xtreme Music. This won't help the guy asking about the Xtreme Audio (search the Sound Blaster section for the one for your card), but using this,

  • Audio cracking and popping

    These are my system specs,
    CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 3.3GHz
    RAM: 4GB Kingston HyperX @ 2000MHz
    GPU: Sapphire HD4890 VaporX 1G
    HDD: Seagate SATA11 500GB
    MOBO: ASUS M4A89TD PRO
    PSU: Corsair TX850W
OS: Windows 7 x64bit Home Edition
So i have an AMD system running windows 7. Now whenever i scroll through my music or playlists in itunes my music suffers severe cracking and popping sounds. It also happens when i am scanning photo's and editing them not sure if that helps. I am at a massive loss in why this is happening i have tried rolling back audio drivers and what not any solutions?

hi i just like to say i had a similar fault though i would be surprised if it causing yours, but you never know,my fault was my laptop lid, [9 months old] it contains the mic ,and when the lid was in a certain angle crackles could be heard worse when i had my external sound card in, it was a faulty membrane [ lid to body] easily missed by engineer because it was the same angle all the time it happened, good luck, PS you English is very good

  • Cracking and popping on Inspire T2900 Speakers

There was a message exactly like this one on the forums about a year ago, perhaps more, and there were no responses...hopefully this proves more fruitful.
Yesterday my Inspire T2900 speakers began to pop and crack. The pops happen at regular intervals of maybe ten seconds or so, and distort sound whenever they occur. Even when there is nothing playing on them, the sound is simply obnoxious. The pops continue even when the speakers are 'off' (aka, the volume on the control is turned all the way down so that it clicks off), though they are quieter. Only when the system is unplugged completely (or the speakers unplugged from the sub unit) do they stop.
I have an audigy 4 sound card purchased this past summer. Even with headphones plugged in, the speakers still crack and pop.
Any help with this problem is greatly appreciated.

Do they still make the cracking if you unplug the leads to the computer at the speaker side? Are all connections (all computer cables, all speaker cables, and the power cable) firmly connected? Finally, it may sound silly and is highly unlikely, but nothing else in the house is being turned on to trigger it.
If none of those help i would assume the problem is with the speakers and your best bet is to contact support.

  • Cracking and popping so

Hey I am running the latest drivers. I have a X-Fi Fataty. and i am running Vista 64 bitAny one else getting VERRY BAD stuttering, cracking, and popping sounds in games?Titan quest for example on the main menu is COMPLETLY HORRIBLEWorld of Warcraft is doing the same issue. I didnt have this issue in XP?for Kicks i have tried moveing the card?to all my differnt PCI slots. and yes i am running ALchemy on TQ and WoW.

I have the same problem but I believe it is a Vista-64 issue not a Creative issue. I tried using my onboard sound instead and same problem. I have an nVidia 7900GTX on a 945P motherboard. The problem only happens in graphically intensi've tasks for me.

  • Cracks and popping sound: A never ending sto

A few years ago i had few cumputers (always custom made) in which i always used the same SB Li've! 3.0 card (Windows 98 SE). Worked like a charm without any problem.
Then i upgraded to Windows XP and the problems started. I still kept using that SB Li've! 3.0 but i had cracks and pops in about every sound environment i used (games, CD playback etc). In the end, i got rid of the SB Li've! 3.0 and started using the onboard sound from the motherboard (ASUS at first). This was a RealTek AC97. All problems gone, no cracks, no pops, just great sound without any problems.
I did upgraded again, now to an MSI motherboard also with integrated sound (RealTek AC97). Just as with the ASUS, not a single problem soundwise.
Then a few days ago, i decided to look for an add-on soundcard again to reduce the CPU workload a bit. Guessing the old SB Li've! 3.0 and XP didn't go along fine, i went for cheap SB Li've! Audigy. Disabled the onboard AC97, removed it's drivers, installed the Audigy without any problems, updated the Creative drivers to the latest version and rebooted my system... guess what... the cracks and the pops in the sound are back in about every sound environment i use.
Today, i reverted back to the AC97... No more cracks and pops!!!!
Since i used a varity of hardware with various chipsets which all worked fine as long as there was no Creative soundcard involved, i can only conclude that your product has some serious problem (and regarding the same remarks made on various forums, i'm far from the only one). I tried about every solution i could find, without succes until this date.
Therefore, i decided that this will be my last Creative product ever bought.

Well, i got it working. I tried about everything i came accros (IRQ settings, PCI latency and stuff like that) but nothing really helped. Forcing IRQ's in the MB's BIOS didn't help and Latency was AOK.
Then i did read here somewhere that you can change your computer setting from ACPI to Standard PC in the device manager and that this helped. So i checked that but i could not change to a Standard PC like mentioned in a previous topic. Since i'm planning a complete re-install when my new Videocard arri'ves this week, i thougt "what the heck", let's do some extra testing. The only thing i could do was uninstall the ACPI driver. I did this, rebooted and i had to set a few settings (video and stuff) back to my settings because they reverted back to default. Also, every hardware on the USB asked for a re-install. Since everthing was still install, this was a piece of cake.
So after removing the ACPI driver (although the device manager says that it's still an ACPI PC), and resetting a few setups + re-installing a bit of hardware, i tried and soundcard and BINGO!, no cracks, no pops, no tics anymore. Sound is just as smooth as a baby's ass now.. :-)
BTW: For those interrested in my setup: MSI K8T Neo motherboard, AMD Athlon 3000+ 64bit, GB Ram, GT6600 256MB DDR3, SB Audigy LS, 200GB SATA Harddisk & a 40 GB HD on IDE as back up, Plextor CD 6x burner, HP printer, Cougar stick and throttle (modded), TrackIR, etc...

  • Recorded Playback has cracks and pops! Help!

I was recording yesterday using a firewire input with an Alesis MultiMix16, and after i recorded (Only using two tracks) the playback had little random pops and cracks. How do i fix this in time for a pro recording session this friday?

The first thing I'd do is restart the mac and restart the interface. then record some tracks and see if the problem persists.
You might also want to trash GB preferences.
Also, check the driver for the Alesis and make sure it's the latest.

  • CRACKING and PoPping in Music?! HELP!!

What is going on with this?I spend over $300.00 on I pod by the 2 year warranty and still nada! It is not only cd downloads but purchses from the I Tunes store. I have tried tinkering with the settings in Quicktime and it still sounds like fireworks going off in my music. I have spent over 2 hours on the phone with various Apple reps and they all act clueless. I am HIGHLY Irritated at this point and seriously consider dumping my "I Life" and going to a different format. When is Apple going to address this issue?
ANy Advice on what is causing this??
    Thanks, Brian

Will installing an older verison of I tunes help perhaps? I have heard a few others mention that.
No idea whether it would help in your case since we don't know what's causing the problem, sorry.
I am just scraed it will affect my music library.
And yes, it will. Though it shouldn't affect the tracks themselves (though you should be backing up your purchased music as a matter of course), the library file in iTunes 7 is not, to the best of my knowledge, backwards compatible with earlier versions. So you'll probably have to recreate the library file (adding your tracks back in through the Add To Library command). If you intend to try this, search around in this forum or the iTunes for Windows Installing forum and you should find threads on how to downgrade from iTunes 7 to iTunes 6.
    Good luck.

  • Cracks and pops while playing anything "above" stereo

    Hi!
First of all I have read the sticky about this issue but did not find anything that I think applies.
I recently had a misshappen with my old HTPC (the PSU burned, taking with it the mobo, processor and two harddri'ves ?<img alt="Shocked[/img] src="http://ac3filter.net/forum/Smileys/amunet/shocked.gif">) and I had to build a new box. The specs are the following:
    Antec Fusion Remote
    Gigabyte MA78GM-UD2H
    Athlon 64 X2 7850
    2GB Kingston HyperX 066MHz DDR2
    500GB Caviar Blue SATA2
    X-Fi Extreme Audio
Now the problem (which I have tried to research before posting this) is that every now and then the sound will pop and crackle when playing anything "above" stereo. The signal will cut out so to speak, the amp will lose the connection momentarily to recieve it half a second or so later. At first I thought that grounding might be the issue but as I said normal stereo-stuff like mp3's, youtube etc work without any problems.
The soundcard is from my old HTPC and has worked flawlessly and the same thing goes for the cable (analogue to coax from the digital I/O of the X-Fi with SPDIF enabled).
It happens in VLC, MPCHC and XBMC. So both with AC3 Filter and VLC's internal encoder.
The reason I'm using the X-Fi and not the internal Realtek is that I can not for the life of me get it to work hehe. It is disabled from the BIOS.
So, any help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: Using Windows XP SP3 with newest drivers for the X-Fi.

  • Crack in Audio when FireWire LaCie drive plugged

I have a Mac Pro 2.66 with an ATI X1900 XT and 2Gb RAM.
For audio I use the Focusrite Saffire LE (Excellent sound) which is plugged in the FW400 port on the back.
    All well so far.
Except that when I plug a LaCie FW 800 hard drive on the front FW800 port, I get crack and pops in audio, with iTunes for example.
And worse, if I copy a file from an internal hard drive to the LaCie, the audio is completely distorted.
When I eject the LaCie drive, and unplug it from the front port, the audio is completely off. No more audio.
I have to restart to get it back.
Is there known problem with FireWire ports in front or back ?

I have the exact same problem. BUt then it got worse: I could only get blips of audio out. After reading your post I went and unplugged the lacie and the audio will play now but I'm still getting pops.
    I will be experimenting more.

  • Ipod G3 no longer syncs over FireWire

My older Ipod G3 (the one with four buttons above scroll wheel) no longer syncs to iTunes over FireWire. In fact the iPod will not show up at all over FireWire any longer?
It syncs over USB tough. But being G3 it cannot charge over USB and my battery is almost dead so I really need FireWire to work.
    * It will charge over FireWire
    * I have to differnet FW cables both showing same problem (and they have worked before)
    * It sync over USB
    * I have reset iPod
    * It has worked before... (it's been sitting in the dock connected to my stereo in the living room)
I'm now thinking that either 10.5.3 or 10.5.2 update may have changed something in OS X to get this behaviour?
That is the only thing that has changed since I last tried to update this ipod (that I can think of)
    /Roger

I know someone with a Power Mac G5 and a third gen iPod, and it works as expected under Leopard 10.5.3. We were messing around with it last week (iPod was sitting idle for a while and we got it working). So if it's a problem caused by OS upgrades, it is not a universal problem. If you have an alternate boot drive (or partition), you can see if a fresh install of Leopard (plus updates) makes a difference.
If it syncs over USB and charges over FireWire, you can continues to use it, although you will not be able to charge and sync at the same time with the standard cables. I don't think you will be able Restore from iTunes either, without the FireWire connection.
If you find that this problem is a hardware problem on the iPod's logic board, this special cable with two ends (FireWire and USB) may allow you to charge and sync at the same time.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9688G/A
It's meant for Windows PC users without FireWire (only USB) who want to use the 3G iPod, so they can charge (through FireWire connected to wall adapter) and sync (through USB) at the same time, and use Restore in iTunes.

  • Random Audio Crackling and Popping on playback in FCP and Pro Tools

    Hello All,
In both Pro Tools LE through an original MBox (with latest firmware), via USB and Final Cut Pro using an Edirol USB audio interface, I get random cracks and pops in different places that aren't in the actual audio files. They are not in the waveforms, and they never happen in the same spot twice...just random. There's no telling when they will be heard, but they are very loud and sharp, and I'm afraid of damaging my powered monitors, not to mention my nerves as I'm in the middle of an intense sound design for a film.
I've tried looking up this topic, and I've seen some topics mentioning sync/clock....like it's a problem with sync being generated internally, as opposed to using an external word clock generator. I never had this problem before on my older dual 2.0 PowerMac (PPC), and I really can't spring for a word clock generator right now...anyone else experience this with their Intel Mac Pro? I've looked for new firmware updates et al, but everything on the computer is up to date. This is really driving me nuts right now.
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Dual 1.8
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Dual 3.0

Interesting point about the winter/static. The only thing is that I never had those problems before with the same setup on my older dual 1.8 PPC G5 PowerMac, through several winters.
My current setup is a dual 3.0Ghz Intel Mac Pro with 3Gb of RAM. the RAM is the right kind and it has checked out as a-okay via numerous tests. The video card is the stock NVidea 7300 GT. For Final Cut Pro and general audio playback, I use an Edirol UA-1EX usb interface http://www.roland.com/products/en/UA-1EX/index.html (w/ updated drivers and all) hooked up through one USB port. For Pro Tools LE 7.3.1, I use an original Mbox, also updated with the latest firmware and all (got rid of the distorted noise problem with firmware update v22), also hooked up to a USB port. I used this exact same setup on my previous Dual 1.8 PPC G5 PowerMac with no such issues for several years. Both interfaces are routed to a Mixer, and onto my monitors. I don't think it's the mixer that's doing it because it didn't ever crackle/pop with my older G5, and still doesn't, which I still use for other things, but routed through the same sound system. I can understand the use of an external clock generator and such, but for many years, I never had this problem with random crackle/pop on playback with other computers that did not use an external sync/clock device. I would think that a computer as new and 'advanced' as the Intel Mac Pro would offer even better results than previous models. Again, the noises aren't printed onto the actual sound files, they come up randomly, but most often after adding a fade/volume change/effect and playing back.
I have just installed a PCI-Express USB 2.0 card for use with both the Edirol and MBox, just in case it was an issue with the built-in MAC USB ports. I will see if that helps.
