Crackling audio after appying letterbox effect

After letterboxing my clips, audio has crackles in it (irregular small clicks, roughly 3 per second). Other than this problem, the audio is of normal volume and quality.
I've verified that the original clips did not have this problem.
This is my first experience with iMovie. This wouldn't be nearly as frustrating if effects rendering on a 1.5 hour movie weren't an overnight job, but well... it is.
Any ideas?
Thanks
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   iMovie 5.0.2 (111)

Lame, my first foray into Mac (in years), and I find a bug right off the bat.
Anyway, I've still got the original clips, so no need to re-import. I'll try the audio extraction.
Thanks for the tip.

  • Crackling audio after 10.8.5 update

    Hi,
I have a 2013 Macbook Air 11" which ran smoothly up until I updated to 10.8.5.
Now all audio regardless whether it be threw headphones or through the MBA speakers crackles. And I mean all audio, from youtube, spotify and my mp3's.
I haven't been able to find any solutions online I was hoping others knew a possible fix.
    Thanks a lot

I was actually able to solve it. It turned out to be the flash player that was packaged with Google Chrome that was defective.

  • Crackling audio after a few minutes

Hi, I have a problem with audio playback using iTunes on my Thinkpad T40 running WinXP Pro. When I play back music files in iTunes, after a few minutes the audio gets kind of staticky / crackly / jittery. If I pause the audio then then play again, the problem goes away for a few minutes and then comes back. The longer the computer is on, the sooner the problem crops up. Any ideas on what might be causing this?
    Thanks!

Goto control panel>quicktime>audio tab and check "Safemode" hit OK and reboot for the setting to take.
Also goto the PC makers site and look for updates for your model, like sound card/driver updates and things like BIOs and stuff

  • Crackling audio (not sure if this is the "same" problem)

I have been experiencing crackling audio under certain circumstances with my Soundblaster X-Fi XtremeMusic. I am no audio expert, but it seems to me that the problem occurs when multiple?"types" of audio are played at the same time. For example, in a game, when voices are played over pre-existing background music, the audio on the voices will get crackly and staticky. This is recreatable in GTA4; that game uses a third-party interface (Microsoft Li've) to track game progress and post updates inside of the game. The game's internal audio is fine, but any sounds "inserted" into the game by Microsoft Li've will be all crackly because they seem to be "competing" with the existing sound effects from the game. It gets really annoying at times.
The "trigger" for this issue?was when I upgraded to a newer NVidia driver for my 7950GX2 graphics card. My sound was fine for years until I updated the driver to 72.xx and newer. However, I am not just talking about the newest driver. This has been happening since June and continues to happen with every NVidia release since then. This happens with every driver beyond 72.xx and now I am using 80.xx. Reverting drivers back to pre June 2008 is most definitely not an option, because I play current games and I update NVidia drivers on a weekly basis as new ones are released.
When the new X-Fi driver came out, I thought finally this problem would be resolved. However, the new driver did nothing to resolve the problem at all. I have tried all versions of the X-Fi driver from 2004 to the present. Nothing fixes the problem.
    Suggestions are welcome... :smileyindifferent:

FRe: Crackling audio (not sure if this is the "same" problem)? Hi, I used to post in these forums a couple of years ago, after an Audigy 4 literally corrupted my hard disk and nearly killed my motherboard's SATA controller.
Anyway, after a lot of debate etc. it turned out that post-Audigy Sound Blasters, including X-Fis, are extremely sensiti've to PCI timing issues and have horrible bus mastering themselves, something which was NEVER quite fixed and keeps popping up time and again. In the best of cases you will get static, in the worse cases you will get BSODs, corrupted data, or even actual damage to the hardware. Not much you can do, really, than putting up with it, like many other users before you did.
P.S.: I'm sure that shortly after this post, a certain user will chime in and start raving about how most chipsets and RAM modules are garbage, and how he uses a super-duper "golden pick" reliable system with a chipset that does everything "nice and slow" and super-reliably and ofc works wonders with ANY "problematic" CL card to date,? and how it's not really CL's fault but that of the garbage mobos, chipsets, ram etc.

  • Got crackling audio in MainStage 2.2.2? I did, and here's how I fixed it...

A lot of people are talking about an issue in MainStage 2.2.2. where crackling audio gradually builds in the signal and eventually becomes unbearable. I had this issue but none of the solutions I found in the support community worked for me.
The obvious fix is the increase the sample buffer size until the issue goes away (as it's often a matter of the CPU not being able to handle the load, especially on older machines). You can also turn on the Safety Buffer checkbox, which can further reduce the problem. My issue wasn't solved this way, unfortunately; no matter how high I increased the sample buffer, the problem persisted.
It seems the problem was being caused by my USB interface, which is a very good unit (the Focusrite Scarlett 18i6). My first mistake was that I used the Scarlett for input, but used built-in output. I suspect the Mac (2012 non-Retina MPB, 2.3GHz i7, 16 GB RAM, SSD) had trouble synchronizing with the device. I routed the output to the Scarlett as well and that seemed to fix the crackling. I had a problem with the device putting the dry signal Mainstage, which wasn't good. I then downloaded the software mixer (found on the Focusrite site) and, when I tried to run it, it told me the Scarlett needed a firmware update. So that was applied. I then ran the mixer and chose "DAW1" routing preset. After that... no more problems at all.
If you're having this exasperating experience with crackling and the buffer size doesn't fix it, perhaps the steps I took could help you find a solution as well.
    Good luck!

  • Bug: Letterbox effect gives unwanted high brightness and low contrast

When I apply the Letterbox effect, it looks good in the preview, but the result is a barely visible clip, all whited-out, letterboxed but with extremely low contrast and high brightness (applied to the whole screen, including the black letterbox bars). Some other effects, like Fog and Aged Film, produce the same unwanted results.
    What's going on?
I am using iMovie HD 6.0.2 on a MacBook. Any help is appreciated.

Yes my particular issue is not like yours. However, there have been many other laptop users experiencing similar problem to yours after 3.10 kernel. Mostly it seems to be bumblebee users that experience your problem with the blank screen. We do know that nvidia have yet to make their official drivers work with kernel 3.10 and up. The drivers in the Arch repository have been patched to work with 3.10. From what I have seen, this also only seem to be affecting laptops with newer nvidia gpu's. I fear there is not much to do with this problem until nvidia give official 3.10 kernel support.
My suggestion would be to stick with 3.9.9 kernel and the drivers that work with it, and don't upgrade those packages until nvidia has addressed these issues. If you have a look at the nvidia forums you will see quite a number of topics mentioning black screen when starting x on 3.10 kernel, and also a thread for the system dying. Reading some of the threads there may help you keep up to date on whether or not the issue seem to be solved.

  • ATV - 'Crackling' Audio

I recently acquired an ATV with the v1 firmware. After setting it up via HDMI and syncing with my iMac iTunes library everything was dandy and enjoying my music. Yay. I decided to give the 2.0 update a go & after installing I now experience 'crackling' audio. Almost like when to turn something up too loud and it distorts and blows you speakers up. It happens regardless of source(steam/sych'ed) and media(music/podcast/youtube).
I've double checked my cabling, reset user settings & rebooted. Nothings really helping? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!!

I am having the same trouble via the HMDI input to my receiver. It clearly sounds like "Digital Clipping" on the peaks of the audio.
What is rather strange is that I have not encountered this on any Movie (local or rented), YouTube, .Mac galleries.
It seems to be only the Music and even occurs when I listen the song off of the ITunes store. For example "Before He Cheats" clips severely in the loud parts on my local copy or playing the very same song off of iTunes, on my Apple TV. No such problem when listening to the same tune on my Macbook or Macbook Pro.

  • Problems with audio after playback

So sorry in advance if this has been asked before but im not 100% sure on how to describe the problem im having with my audio after export. heres a link to the video- https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Byffs2-9EE3bdDdWcDNVNGVaMnc/edit?usp=sharing . ***PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LYRICS ARE EXPLICIT AND WHILE THE VIDEO MAY BE OF A VIDEO GAME IT IS GRAPHIC*** So the audio sounds fine while editing and when i export the level is around -18db but when playing it back in quicktime it almost sounds like its crackling and popping and im unsure why. if it makes a difference im playing it back through some monitors connected through my UA Apollo Quad interface. thanks to anyone who can help me figure out whats wrong.

    Hi fox5urf3r,
Welcome to the forum. I would suggest that you try listening on other speakers. Sounds OK to me.
    Thanks,

  • Synchronizing audio AFTER in the timeline

Is there any way to sync audio to a clip AFTER it is in the timeline?
Here's what happened in my case.
I have video clips with embedded audio on them. As I was editing with them, I noticed that the audio levels were low.
I now have the stand alone audio from the recorder that has MUCH better levels recorded on it, but I cannot find a way to sync it to the clips I already have in my timeline. Is there any way short of syncing them, and manually finding the in and out points again on the newly created "synchronized clip" and doing a replace edit? Seems like a lot of work and not very precise. Can I in any way replace the audio married to the clip with the new audio and have it sync without creating a new clip?
Another question for the audio guys. Would adjusting the "Loudness" setting on the original clips to increase their levels lose me quality over replacing them with the audio files from the recorder?
(Our setup on set, btw was a Fostex recorder and boom mic recording to CF cards, and audio was feeding out of that into our F900 camera (so all of the clips have sync sound as well. The audio that hit the camera though, is significantly quieter than the individual sound wav files off of the Fostex)
Hope this makes sense, and thanks!

I will let the other guys address the syncing of a standalone audio track to your video.  There are many ways to do that, and I do that all the time just by aligning the waveform features then pulling the video audio part down to -96dB. You could take all that into a compound clip afterward ... But ...
Regarding the question you asked above.  You Fostex will usally record much better audio than any camera audio circuitry.  I use standalone Tascams to record audio then marry it to the video afterward ... makes a much better experience for the viewer. Your audio level on the Fostex, being much higher in level, will help things, but I still use Loudness on dialog clips.  I don't do anything with commercial music tracks because they have already been maximized for loudness and mixed for proper dynamic range and limiting and compression, etc.
In general you will probably like your audio if you (1) apply loudness, (2) change the volume level slider in inspector to make your timeline audio waveform to where it just rarely touches red peaks ... this usually means the level is around +1dB on the volume level.  Then, make sure you have only the channel selected in your Dual Mono settings under the audio tab, which has an actual audio waveform.  Uncheck the one that does not have a waveform if this applies to you then recheck your volume levels.
Finally, (3) pull over the Adaptive Limiter form the audio section of the effects browser onto your clip ... use it's default settings.  This will add a soft-knee roll off to your louder peaks while leaving the lower features untouched.  I prefer this method to compression because limiters to not boost the noise levels as much as compressors do.  Then, to end up, simply check the volume levels for the whole thing again to make sure you are not above 0dB to +1dB.
If you have special requirements for voices and dialogue, you can use the audio enhancements section and the little EQ icon on the right to open up an EQ feature.  Select 31 band instead of the default 10 band setting then do the following: Increase 3,100Hz by about 6dB to add a degree of excitement to the speaker's voice.  Roll off every frequency below 100Hz by about 3 to 4 dB to reduce the "mud" and rumble.  For a male speaker, boost 250Hz by about 3dB ... for a female voice boost 350dB instead.  Then boost 20KHz to add presence to the audio.
This is probably a lot more than you need, but you will end up making your audio almost as good as it can be by following these basic principles.  Your mileage may vary
    Best wishes.

  • Noise after adding visual effects or tranisition

    Hi there!
I recently edited a movie with iMovie. After adding some effects or transitions I noticed a strange noise (some kind of crackling).
    Here are my questions:
How can I restore the original clips? I saved and closed that project before I noticed that crackling.
How can I avoid that noise when adding effects or transitions?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hello,
After adding some effects or transitions I noticed a strange noise (some kind of crackling). How can I avoid that noise when adding effects or transitions?
Unfotunately, that is a known problem with iMovie sometimes. See this:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107945
How can I restore the original clips?
Remove any transitions on either side of the clip you wish to restore. Click on the clip. Under 'Advanced' you should see the option to 'restore original clip.' Just select that and the entire clip from which that part came will replace it.

Welcome to the  discussion forums.
Try going to synching in the sources menu on your tv and selecting 'change itunes library', when it gives you the passcode check itunes to see if the tv is showing up as a new device, if so try entering the pass code. It may be that your tv is seeing itunes as a different library because of a recent upgrade.

  • Full Screen Mode has letterbox effect

Hopefully this is an easy one and I am just missing something, but when I open a photo in full screen mode it does not fill the entire screen. Instead, there is a title bar on top, an editing bar on the bottom and a fairly large blank area on either side that frames the photo like a letterbox effect on TV.
What am I doing wrong? (In case it matters, the camera used was a Nikon D40.) In the past with iPhoto 09 these photos would fill the entire screen of my MacBook Pro, now, not so much. (My desktop wallpaper, for example, is a photo taken with the same camera, and it fills the entire area of my MBP's screen; how can I get that same effect when I open a photo in iPhoto '11?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Sony DCR SX65 has no audio after import

hey there William & welcome to Discussions.
is the VHS tape old or the MiniDV tape? if VHS, it could be that the signal has just deteriorated over time--it can happen w/ poor storage(heat, laying tapes on flat, not re-wound, etc...) & just age. have you tried not recording to MiniDV & just sending the VHS signals through the Sony w/ out a tape in it? it could be that one or more of you audio cables has gone bad, you may have dirty heads in either the VHS VCR &/or the MiniDV or have audio in problems w/ the Sony &/or audio out problems on the VHS VCR or maybe you have a FW issue on the Sony or w/ your FW cable. if you have access to another cam &/or VCR as well as FW & A-V cables, start swapping/troubleshooting & see if your results improve.
    good luck.

  • MacBook OSX 10.6.5 No audio after update

Hello, My aluminum 13" MacBook has been fine up until a few weeks ago. The internal speakers do not work after Mac OSX 10.6.5 boots up. I hear the 'gong' on initial start up... but no audio after OSX boots. I have tried plugging in headphones, using a toothpick- nothing works. The sound preferences show 'Internal Speakers' and Built in.
Another interesting fact is iTunes reports "an unknown error occurred -200". Very helpful message.
If I boot into Windows Vista using BootCamp.. audio works just fine. So, the speakers and audio hardware are not malfunctioning. It's clearly an OSX configuration problem.
Any ideas on what I can do to get my audio back? The only thing that has changed was I let Apple Updater install a few patches.

If you have not already done so, run Disk Utility's "Verify Disk" & "Repair Permissions" routines on your startup drive (in that order). If the verify disk step finds any problems, you must correct them before continuing.
Try creating a new, temporary user account. Restart your Mac, logging into that account only. If the speakers now work then something associated with your normal user account is the problem, such as a login item or bad preference file.
If the speakers still don't work with this account, you can delete it. Then try starting up in Safe Mode. If the speakers now work something that Safe Mode disables is the culprit, such as a third party or non-essential extension, an add-on system modifier, startup item, etc.
If none of the above help, try downloading & installing the 10.5.6 combo update. If that doesn't help then you may need to reinstall the OS & update it to the current version.
