Crackling distortion of sound with EQ

Pretty much what the title says.
I got a new iPod Classic, but when I activate the "Rock" EQ (or any EQ for that matter), it distorts any strong bass or treble into just a crackle, which is horrid. It's not the headphones I use, it's not the volume level (it crackles no matter how quiet or loud), and it's not the audio files themselves. It's definitely something in the device.
Is this normal? Do all iPods just have really rubbish soundcards? Or is mine faulty?
Thanks for any help

i have the same issues, and it seems like it's the ipod classic that really have that quality sounds. i can't exchange it since it's a gift. i wish they have a much better sound quality like iphone is already OK for me. *sigh*

• Distorted user sounds with Audigy BETA driv

Not sure where to post this except here - let me know if there's a better place.
I installed the Audigy BETA drivers to use with my Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro and Vista Premium 32 using the 4. output with CMSS.
I found that the system sounds worked fine but the wavs that I added myself - "You've got new mail" etc - distorted heavily.
After spending some time on this I found that the "cause" was that Vista's built-in sounds are all recorded in stereo and the wavs that I was using were mono. Editting the samples to create pseudo-stereo (I used Audacity) solved the problem.
I thought that this might be useful info if anyone else has the same problem.

I have this same problem with the beta drivers and I am using X-Fi Xtrememusic. All my mono desktop wavs are distorted. Even my Xfire "Click" to let me know a friend has signed on is all static (must be a mono sound as well) What gives Why would Mono files cause this static
Just to add a note: These same files will play fine through the Windows Media player.
Another Note: The Text to Speech feature must be in mono, because this is also distorted. People that leave and enter my vent use the TTS and it is all distorted. Any way to make this stereo Or do we know why mono would be distorted

• ITunes 10.5 plays & imports CDs with crackling/distortion

Hi all,
When I try to play or import a CD, I get a horrible crackling/distorted sound, and the music is barely audible underneath it. This started happening since I upgraded to iTunes when I installed iOS 5 on my iPhone. The crackling happens either when listening to the CD, or when listening to a track I have recently imported from the CD.
It seems the new version of iTunes is unable to communicate with my CD drive properly. Apple, what have you changed in the new version?!
Is anyone else having this problem?
At the minute I can get around the problem by importing my tracks into Windows Media Player and then moving them into my iTunes library...
What this is not
It's not a playback/sound drivers issue. All the existing tracks in my libary play just fine, including tracks that I imported with the previous version of iTunes. Other applications and music players are playing audio just fine too.
It's not an issue with my CD being damaged. The CD plays and imports perfectly in Windows Media Player and other players. Also, I've tried CDs which were working just fine with the previous version of iTunes, and they're now playing all crackly.
It's not an issue with my installation. I've tried removing all Apple software from my PC, restarting, and reinstalling it all - to no avail...
My details
Samsung R60 laptop.
Windows Vista (arggh, I know)
iTunes 10.5.0.142
If you've had anything similar please reply!
Thanks

Same problem here with 10.5.1.  I even connected a new cd drive and it's still not working properly.
Here is one work around that appears to temporarily fix the issue:
1) Restart Itunes
2) Change setting to "show cd"
3) Right click to copy
The above worked for me.

• Crackling Sound with Itunes

After giving up with pci-e extreme audio because of latency issues, I bought the pci-e fatalty pro pci-e. One of the problem is, there is a crackling issue when i stop and play another playlist in Itunes. You can fix it by changing modes.(i.e from entertainment mode to audio creation mode) but then again after you change playlists, it does it again.

I am unsure if this will help you or not. Itunes has an add-in setting which in my opinion only, may be similar to our using CMSS3d with our cards, etc.
Disable the Sound Enhancer feature in iTunes:
1. Open iTunes.
2. One the Edit menu, click Preferences.
3. Click the Playback tab.
4. Deselect Sound Enhancer.
and now see if you get the same crackles pops or sound playback problems. I disabled that setting on mine from the beginning, but hopefully you can toggle that setting and see if that helps you.

• Urgent Help! DVD distorted sound with Creative 5.1 External

Hi there
new to this board, i recently purchased the Creative Soundblaster Li've! 24bit 5. External Card and am having difficulties playing a DVD. Whatever program I use, i get some serious distorted 'hiss' sound throughout the movie. Any DVD does this. and its only DVDs, other movie and audio files are fine. If i disconnect the external card and just use my original on-bard card, it works fine too.
Any idea how to fix this?
Thanks

ishiiyuto,
As I understand it, the USB port doesn't have enough badwidth to handle DVDs with AC3 sound. See the post by Jeremy-CL here.

• Distorted / choppy recorded sound with Audigy 2 ZS and Vista 64-bit

Hi, I wonder if anybody has any idea of why this issue is happening. First let me give you my PC specs:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 940 @ 3.0 GHz
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 rev. 2.0
Graphics: 2 x BFG GeForce 8800 GT 52MB
RAM: 4 x GB G.Skill PC6400 @ 800 MHz
Sound: Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS
TV Tuner:? Hauppauge WinTV PVC PCI II (26xxx)
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP
?So here's the deal. I have no problems whatsoever with audio playback with this sound card. The issue I am having is while recording sound with it. When I record my voice via a Microphone with the Windows Sound Recorder and then play it back, my voice sounds very choppy. It sounds as if I was talking in front of a fan. The same happens with any program I try to use. If I use Audacity to record sound, the playback is also distorted / choppy. The main problem is with Skype, as I cannot use it to talk to people because they cannot understand what I'm saying because of the issue. Does anybody has any ideas why this happens? My PC is a dual boot PC with Vista 64-bit and XP 32-bit, and this issue only happens with Vista. Sound recorded plays back fine under Windows XP.
I am using the latest drivers available for this card from the Creative site.
I'd appreciate your help,
Daniel

A little bit off topic here, but 64bit does not mean more performance at all lol.
Sure, but there are in some cases drastic performence diferences. Under a fresh installed Vista X64 i have less CPU usage, as under 32 bit. But of course X64 uses more RAM (some tasks are double 32 and 64 bit). But the main reason I have more performence is, that the games I often play, get almost a boost. Dont ask me why, but under 64 bit EAW and FOC have the same FPS as under 32 bit. But under X64 I use a bit more Details and a higher resolution. (both are 32 bit games, so its a bit funy )?______________________?Sure there are other ways to install the drivers. But if some Setup dosent work, the first thing I try is to get it via Divice Management. And as this worked for me, I dont waste time to try other methods (Had bad experience, you can break the driver faster than install it *G*)?______________________?Some Questions I have left (after a few hours undr X64 with Creative Drivers):?Could it be, that the driver causes sometimes havy CPU usage?Could it also be, that the driver causes some lags, after you copy a file (the end sound, copy is finihed, but takes more time for "final finish", than without the drivers) - I know that Vista has some problems, on some PCs with copy, and that MS has an inoficial Patch (but dosent help for my PC so far)

• Distorted sound with more bass equalizer preset

Hello,
My Problem is that my iphone has either no bass or too much. If i activate the equaizer preset more bass - it sounds like completely distorted (but not with all songs). If i turn it off the sound is weak and just not "nice". I testet the same tracks wich i downloaded from the music store with the same earphones - sennheiser mx 55 with my macbook and my ipod - it was much much better. So the haedphones are okay - it has to do with the iphone. Can u please help me - and please don´t tell me to not use the equalizer - this is no option because it sounds lame like... If there is no way to solve this problem i will try to return the music ibought and maybe use a different player from the appstore?? Greetings from germany. Simon p.s. i think this is a huge quality issue wich apple isnt able to solve right now.

i wish it would be this easy but - i only have downloaded music from the itunes store on my iphone - not much but completely downloaded from the itunes store. I found out that these songs have different "sound" one is clear and the other is very dark with much bass. But if i transfer them to my ipod they are much better and not distorted. What can i do with my iphone to get this probelm solved or what can i do to give the music back?

• Distorted sound with mountain lion.Is there any solution?

i have distorted sound with a usb soundcard since i upgrade mountain lion.. Any idea?

Once you get straightened out consider backing up via a bootable clone. It can solve a lot of problems.

• Crackling sound with Alsa after update.

Hi all !
After my last upgrade I noticed a crackle in the sound but only on the left channel when I plug in my headphones. I don't know if this crackle is present with the laptop's speakers since they are very crappy (Macbook white falling-apart-body 1st gen); at least I can't head it.
The funny thing, is that if I have the headphones plugged during booting, there is no crackle once the system is running ! My system is fully up-to-date, here is the kernel version and alsaversion:
kernel26 2.6.30-5
alsa-lib 1.0.20-1
I have to add, I just brought this pair of headphones and they are very good, maybe the problem has been here for ages but I've never noticed it !
Any suggestions ?
Thanks for reading !

I would suggest trying another pair of headphones just to see if it does the same thing.  I am not saying buy a new pair but use someones elses or such.  that at least should start narrowing down the problem

• Whenever I call my home phone, I hear a lot of snap crackle pop sounds with 3G active.

whenever I call my home phone, I hear a lot of snap crackle pop sounds with 3G active. If I turn off 3G, this stops. How do I fix this?

there is no fix. It's a GSM 3G thing. I used to be able to go to the movies and put my phone next to a movie theatre speaker and it do the same thing....
i just figured the newest 3G technologies did away with it

• Surround sound with Astro A40 headset

%Surround sound with Astro A40 headset? I've been having problems getting surround sound to work with my A40 headset to work with my computer.
I have an X-Fi Titanium and I'm running Win 7, although I also had this issue on XP and Vista.
Originally when the A40 was connected by optical cable the audio was distorted and would crackle heavily. Installing the <a rel="nofollow" href="http://forums.creative.com/t5/Sound-Blaster/SB-X-Fi-Series-Support-Pack-2-0-05-5-2009/m-p/527485]DanielK support pack fixed the distortion and crackle issues.
Next, someone suggested I get the <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://buy.soundblaster.com/_creativelabsstore/cgi-bin/pd.cgi?page=product_detail&category=Software&pid=F 2222DDN6Z2H2ADDEZD">DDL pack. I tried installing it but I get an errorhttp://i.imgur.com/qag0X.png
Any ideas?

for the DTS Connect Pack, try right clicking it and choosing properties and then choose compatibility and then Vista SP2 or XP (as a last result), and be sure to run it as administrator.

• Scratchy, distorted, garbled sound from MP3s files

I'm having really horrible scratchy, distorted, garbled sound from MP3 files. AAC encoded files play extremely clearly on iTunes 10.5

After reviewing all comments, it appears that this issue is squarely with the 10.5 upgrade that Apple did on I tunes. I have done all the uninstall and re-install that you can do.  Songs play fine on some, terrible on others, but yet they all will play on Windows Media Player. I can't believe it is the chipset for those that AMD processors, because everything was fine on the 10.4.  So,  Apple please fix this or offer us a way to uninstall from the 10.5 to the 10.4 where everything should be okay.   Awaiting your reply with thousands of others!

• Crackling & loss of sound

2 weeks ago (just as my ipod went out of warranty) it developed crackling distortion and loss of sound. Initially thinking this was a headphone problem I tried different headphones but to no avail. Although I have had the ipod mini for 12 months I have only been regularly using it in the last 3 months. I calculate that I have had about 100 listening hours (a poor return on investment!) As I see that other people have also experienced this problem it suggests a design fault! What do I do now?

I have the same problem! It is intermittent, but extremely annoying. I first noticed it while using a Belkin adapter in my car... was convinced it was the adapter, tried another and got the same results. It now does the cracking when using the clickwheel as well as when connecting anything to the bottom of the unit. I can only use the iPod now if I hold it very carefully.. even then it sometimes does this and drops the signal. My unit is older, almost a year... but I am very disappointed, after blathering on to everyone about how great my iPod mini was for so long. Of course I am long out of warranty. Anyone have any suggestions?

• Distroted sound with laptop expresscard soundcard

So I'm on a dell XPS 530m (about 2 years old) and I finally gave up on the internal sound (the buzz drove me crazy) and now I'm using a creative extreme audio notebook soundcard though my laptop's expresscard slot. Normally it runs just fine, sounds a lot better too, but sometimes it starts producing with distorted sound. ?
The sound problem normally happens when I'm playing a flash game in firefox, but I've had it happen with itunes before as well. It plays the right sounds (so it plays music of sound effects from the game) but it's badly distorted, it sounds like a really crappy recording and has a nasty metallic ring to it. Weird thing is that it goes away after a while and appears to only effect one program at a time. I've had times where the flash game sounds terrible but with itunes playing at the same time it sounds fine, and if I paly the game long enough the sound goes back to being normal. ?
The soundcard drivers are all updated, I have disabled the onboard sound card of my laptop though the device manager and disabled all other inputs and outputs on the soundcard that I'm not using (so I only have the single headphone jack enabled). Any ideas what the problem could be? From my research it could be a ground loop, but I'm not sure that fits, any ideas? Thanks!

Hi,
I'm a newbie on Arch. I have almost in the same situation of hecateluna (mine is a X61 tablet). The same commands give the same outputs. No error messages but no sound. Using the mute, vol-up, vol-down, didn't work and I have searched the web for a solution. The most specific post about sound (for Ubuntu) is this:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Installin … blet#Sound
But I have all the packages already installed and modules loaded. I really didn't know what can be wrong. Any help or pointer to a solution is really appreciated.
Cheers,
