Crackling & distortion problem

Hello folks
I'm having an annoying problem with Logic 7: When I push play button it goes fine until about ten seconds these crackling noises appear and I can't seem to get rid of them...any ideas?

(hehe... you're quick! I posted that reply to the wrong thread >;-)
But since I'm here !
Sounds like you might have an Audio buffer problem, since it plays well for a bit, then "gets ahead of itself"... did you try increasing your buffer size?
(If it's already large, maybe a decrease might help)

  • Can you please help me fix a crackling/distortion problem that i have with AA when recording?

I've read before on the forum that some other users have the same problem and I've tried quite about everything to fix my problem as well, but still no result.
When I record, be it in AA 1 or in AA 3, i sometimes end up with channels being distorted (randomly!).
    Here's my config:
I think it's important to say that I've been having this problem starting only a few months ago, though I haven't reinstalled Windows or anything. I'm working with windows XP SP3. I think (though i'm not sure) the problem occured about the same time I've updated my M-Audio drivers to version 5074. I've also tried disabling C1E as I've read on this forum on another topic and no result.
    Also,
here's a sample of the crackling:
    http://dl.transfer.ro/transfer_ro-26jun-168e94ae4dc5d9.zip
I'll send a bottle of Jack to whoever helps me fix this one Really now, I'm desperate!

I don't hear crackling in that sample, myself, just a split-second rant in another language I can't identify, but anyhoo...
    1. Have you tried rolling back to the 5069 driver?

I see you're having your issue in WinXP SP3.  One guy (see post 43 on page 5) reports it in Win 7 with this driver.  People have reported better success with the 5069 driver but that one has been reported to lock on shutdown in Win7.

Same driver, Win7, different M-Audio card, different sound program, but crackling/sizzling. Fix reported by OP in post 14 by adjusting BIOS settings:
Disabling EIST (Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology) and CPU C state in  the power section of the BIOS made all the crackle sizzle go away!
There's a checkmark in the last window in your screenshots for that one.  Also discussion of suggestions to adjust latency, etc., in soundcard which didn't fix it for him but may have for others.
If those give no joy, please post motherboard brand and model.

  • ITunes 10.5 plays & imports CDs with crackling/distortion

    Hi all,
When I try to play or import a CD, I get a horrible crackling/distorted sound, and the music is barely audible underneath it. This started happening since I upgraded to iTunes when I installed iOS 5 on my iPhone. The crackling happens either when listening to the CD, or when listening to a track I have recently imported from the CD.
It seems the new version of iTunes is unable to communicate with my CD drive properly. Apple, what have you changed in the new version?!
Is anyone else having this problem?
At the minute I can get around the problem by importing my tracks into Windows Media Player and then moving them into my iTunes library...
    What this is not
It's not a playback/sound drivers issue. All the existing tracks in my libary play just fine, including tracks that I imported with the previous version of iTunes. Other applications and music players are playing audio just fine too.
It's not an issue with my CD being damaged. The CD plays and imports perfectly in Windows Media Player and other players. Also, I've tried CDs which were working just fine with the previous version of iTunes, and they're now playing all crackly.
It's not an issue with my installation. I've tried removing all Apple software from my PC, restarting, and reinstalling it all - to no avail...
    My details
    Samsung R60 laptop.
    Windows Vista (arggh, I know)
    iTunes 10.5.0.142
If you've had anything similar please reply!
    Thanks

Same problem here with 10.5.1.  I even connected a new cd drive and it's still not working properly.
Here is one work around that appears to temporarily fix the issue:
    1) Restart Itunes
    2) Change setting to "show cd"
    3) Right click to copy
    The above worked for me.

  • IPhone 4 speaker crackle/distorted

A couple of days ago my iPhone 4's built-in speaker got this real bad crackling/distorted sound, it honestly sounds like the speaker is blown.  The sound doesn't go away as I turn the volume down.  This happened over night, I noticed it when my alarm went off in the morning.  I do listen to music (usually Pandora) and watch YouTube videos, but it's never caused a problem in the year I've had it.  Has anyone had this problem or have any idea about what I should do?  I live about 2hrs from the nearest Apple Store so I can't just make a quick trip.

UPDATE -- Woke up this morning (luckily before my alarm) and there is now no sound coming out of the speaker at all.  When I have my earbuds plugged in, the sound comes through fine.

  • Distortion problems with new iPod Classic

    Hello:
I recently purchased a 160GB iPod Classic to replace a 2-year-old 60GB iPod. I had no problems updating the new one; about a zillion tracks went in very smoothly in about a half-hour. But I have noticed a couple of problems:
First, I always listen to my iPod at work on a Klipsch dock, and even though I keep it set at a fairly low volume (all of the content is classical music), I'm getting crackling and distortion in random spots in music. It doesn't seem to matter if the music was downloaded from iTunes or imported from a CD. It's definitely not the dock, because I tried the old iPod on it and it worked as well as it always did.
Second, when I select a playlist and start playback, I notice that more often than not, the first second or two of music is cut off. I have to press the back arrow on the iPod, and then playback is correct.
That is a minor annoyance, but the the distortion problem is far more serious. I never had either problem on the old iPod, and I was wondering if anyone has experienced similar problems with the iPod Classic. I'd HATE to think I'd have to trash 40GB of music and start all over importing CDs.
Thanks for any input you can give me.

thanks for the suggestion but it did not work.
The iPod came up asking for the password (WEP key) and i entered it. It showed connected with the router but Safari does not work and when i check the DHCP entries in see the following
    IP: 169.254.202.45
    Sub: 255.255.0.0
This means that the connection was made but the router DHCP server did not assign an IP address to the iPod.
This exact problem i have encoutered so far in my office, a cofeeshop and a car dealership. In all cases the wirelles was based on an older linksys router and except in the case of my office the other two were unsecured networks.
I believe it has something to do with the firmware on those linksys routers causing a problem specificaly to iPods and i would guess iPhones too since they have the same OS.
I'm open to any suggestions but i've tried all the ones posted in this and other forums so far with no luck.
When i assign a static IP, the iPod again connects, the router log indicates outgoing traffic from that IP but there is no incomming traffic.

  • Since 10.8 crackle / distortion on external FireWire soundcard when playing music (only when Mail is running)

Since updating to Mountain Lion I have crackles in music playback with Mail app under the following conditions:
    - Mid 2009 MBPro
    - external FireWire soudcard / recording device ESI Durafire is connected
    - a pair of studio monitors connected to audio out on this device
    - Firefox is running
    - Mail app is started
    - music is playing back (with iTunes or Spotify)
    - navigating or clicking with mouse (or trackpad) into Mail or from Mail to another app it produces a short crackle / distortion in the music
    - crazy but true: when the loudness in the song itself (not via the volume-switch) increases or decreases the crackle is getting louder or less louder, too!
    - when closing Mail app, crackling is gone at once
    - when stopping music, crackling is gone at once, too
    - happens with no other app then Mail
    Any ideas?

    JoBautista,
you still have the option (before your warranty expires) of purchasing an AppleCare Protection Plan, which will provide an additional two years of coverage. Once your warranty expires, you will no longer have the option of purchasing AppleCare.

  • A non-solution to the static distortion problem

I don't know if there's any chance of the following "solution" having value to anyone else but I'll submit it to be filed in the "For What It's Worth" folder.
First, by way of preamble, I've upgraded iTunes a number of times now (going back to v. 4.6.0.15) and this is the first time I have had any sort of issue - the static/distortion problem that is presently being much-discussed in these forums.
Following the leads in the early threads on this topic, I played a handful of song files with QuickTime and confirmed that everything sounded fine with that player.
I went back to iTunes and the problem remained, although it struck me that it wasn't as severe as it had been.
I continued playing songs, hoping for some sort of insight into what had gone wrong when it slowly dawned on me that the static/distortion had ended ... and I hadn't done anything - changed settings or anything else - except simply play songs.
iTunes has been playing for a couple of hours now with no further sign of the problem.
One final point of information, I'm guessing it was after having played in the area of 10-15 songs when the problem seems to have solved itself.

I'll also add that I've since re-enabled the options I originally changed to "fix" my problem. I'm no longer getting the distortion, even with the options I changed.
I'm not sure what's going on.. I guess I'm just glad my music is back to normal and that I can browse the Internet AND listen to music!

  • PULSEAUDIO Crackling / Distortion

This distortion is like a crackly echoey distortion. It actually has an echo component to it, When I change the output and it goes normal for a few seonds and tehre is a song playing, then it kicks in, the sound quality goes way down, it has this crackling sound, and very noticeable echo comes on the voices and the drums (which you can barely make out over the crackling). Output is perfect if forced to use ALSA directly, or if I boot into windows Seven. This is all pulse audio (probably), the piece of crap.
When I go "pulseaudio --kill" and then "mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=0.0 <file>" it plays perfectly without distortion. When I go alsamixer -c0 none of the sliders have any gain, they are all at 0db or -1db or so.
To stop the distortion, chanigng from 44100 to 48000 and so on in the /etc/pulse/ whatever file doesnt work. What does work is opening pavucontrol and changing the internal audio on the configuration page. I hav a Barts thing that is turned off and an Internal Audio that can be set to a huge list of things like Analog Surround 5.0 Out, Analog Stereo Duplex, Analog Surround 7.1 Output + Analog Stereo Input, so on and so forth.
Now changing from one to another will randomly make the distortion go away for 30 seconds, until I open a new program, close pavucontrol, or just wait a while, then it will come back on, and I'll have to change it to another, which won't work at first usually but randomly will. There is NO CORRELATION between what is actually chosen and what does and doesnt have distortion straight away.
Basically PulseAudio is $#!+ all the sudden, and I don't know why. I have a fully updated system, hardware is as follows:
    $ lspci | grep udio
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40)
01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc Barts HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6800 Series]
Also plays it fine as testing with mplayer, so this is a pulseaudio thing (i think). WTH????

Also my last message on dmesg is:

But there is only one of these lines in the output and the distortion kicks in several times. This was right after the line:
    chromium-sandbo (2511): /proc/2509/oom_adj is deprecated, please use /proc/2509/oom_score_adj instead.
So it happened after I opened my web browser (I only just booted this pc up I had it turned off over the night). This is a recurring problem over the past couple of days, BTW. It was probably the last update because when I done it I didn't reboot for awhile.

  • Newbie with Distortion Problem, Audigy 2

Hello all you helpful people,?Seams common problem having spent the last 3 hours reading through the many posts on this subject, have to say the most helpful (easy to follow) was Jeremy's "read this before you post". Good man but unfortunatly it didnt help me. Just bought Aud2 ZS, fitted, run the disk that come with it. All working and i have sound, just that its distorted as though the pre-amp of the card has to higher level going into it. my PC is a P4 3Ghz, 52MB mem,?running XP SP2, and has only just been built so can be trusted as a clean install. I have disbled the on board sound in the bios. (thanks to Jeremy's post mentioned)?Calibration noise is dificult to tell if its distorted, the welcome menu "play?dvd-audio sample (24bit)"?demo thing sounds great, loud, clean and crisp, (I'm listening through?monitor audio cable and some?nice HI-Fi, my nakamichi?amp and Mordant Short floorstanders) so i know it can do it!?playing a audio cd is worse than listening to ripped WMA lossless through either creative's mediasource or windows?media player , but both un-listenable. So what's wrong? gain of the pre-amp after the DAC's? but the demo works? therfore it would appear?related to source, what controls gain with different sources? Drivers??Any help or suggesions greatly recieved. Thankyou in anticipation.

    blackadder,
Could you decribe the distortion a little more? Is it crackling and popping? If so, search the Forums for "snap crackle pop," and you'll see it's a common symptom with perhaps more than one cause. I haven't had this problem with my A2ZS, so I'm no expert on the various solutions. However, because you haven't gotten a reply yet, I'll offer some initial, simple steps you can try. Muting any playback sources you aren't using will eliminate/reduce crosstalk/bus-noise. Moving the soundcard to a PCI slot far away from the video card has worked for some. Turn your volume sliders down to ~90% rather than 00%. In Speaker Setup, when you run the channel test, are "Front right, front left" etc clear or distorted? Do you get the same distortion using headphones or other speakers?Message Edited by Katman on 0-30-20070:59 AM

  • Sudden pulsing crackling distortion with AT2020USB microphone.

Just got Logic Pro X, just hooked up my new Audio-Technica AT2020 USB+ microphone on my iMac 3.4 Ghz Intel Core i7 with 20 gb ram. No problems, mic sounded great through Logic. Then I was trying to learn from an online tutorial about recording voiceovers in Logic, must have made a change to some setting and suddenly a pulsing rhythmic hum started and any sound input through the mic became crackling and distorted. Tried restarting the computer, plugging and unplugging the mic, but still the same distortion. I tried another USB mic and Logic was fine. I tried the AT2020 mic with Garage Band and it was fine. Somehow there is a setting amiss in Logic specific to this microphone but I can't figure out what it is. Suggestions welcome!

That was it! I had set it to 32 (too low) and just now reset it to 128, and the distortion went away. Thanks very much for your help.

  • Wav file distortion problem

When putting radio programs together, I'm adding .wav files to .mp3 files in the multitrack view in Audition 3.0 and they sound fine to start with.  When I export the file to mp3 and listen to it in the edit view the .wav spots that I added sound distorted, as if there are 2 or 3 spots playing on top of each other.  I go back to Multitrack view and they also now sound distorted.  The other thing that happens is that sometimes once I export something of say 10mins, it only saves the first 20 seconds or so!  It doesn't happen every time but it is quite often.  If I go to another computer it seems to work fine and nobody else I know seems to get this problem which makes me think it must be my laptop.  Any idea what is causing these issues?  Maybe my Audio hardware or sample rate?  Please help!  Thanks.

    jonnykibbs wrote:
To be honest I'm not sure what the levels are,
Surely you can see on Audition's meters what the signal is peaking at? If levels are peaking very near to '0' then when you encode to  a lossy format like .mp3 you can generate levels above '0' and which lead to clipping and distortion.

I got a new iPod Classic, but when I activate the "Rock" EQ (or any EQ for that matter), it distorts any strong bass or treble into just a crackle, which is horrid. It's not the headphones I use, it's not the volume level (it crackles no matter how quiet or loud), and it's not the audio files themselves. It's definitely something in the device.
Is this normal? Do all iPods just have really rubbish soundcards? Or is mine faulty?
    Thanks for any help

i have the same issues, and it seems like it's the ipod classic that really have that quality sounds. i can't exchange it since it's a gift. i wish they have a much better sound quality like iphone is already OK for me. *sigh*

  • Sound distortion problems, help p

Hi I recently bought the Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme audio but i've been having problems with it. First of all i installed the sound card. Then when turning computer back on i went into bios and disabled the audio function thats in the integrated peripherals then saved and exited. When i got onto my desktop i installed all the drivers and was prompted to restart my computer when i did another driver update came up and i was prompted to install that (even though it says vista at the top and i have xp...) anyways i installed it and restarted my computer again. This time my desktop wouldnt come up. Instead i was brought to a blue screen that said windows has been disabled to prevent any physical damage or sumtin like that. I tried everything but it kept going to that screen. So i took the sound card out, enabled my integrated sound card and started up comp. It worked. So I tried again, installed sound card and disabled integrated sound card when i got to windows i installed drivers and all and now everything works but theres a problem. The sound is a little distorted. Its off and on too, like sometimes when im listening to music the bass is HORRIBLE then other times its ok. Volume doesnt affect it though so i dont know what is changing it. Ventrilo always sounds bad, when i switch channels the robot voice has a crappy echo and sounds terrible. A few other weird things that went on was when i tried installing the sound card a second time i uninstalled the realtek hd audio thing that came on comp and i had on board sound disabled...even still i heard sound (this was before i put my sound card in that second time) So if your still reading this any tips? I think what might be the problem is my on board sound and the sound blaster x-fi are playing at the same time since i couldnt ever figure out how to make my sounds stop. I dont know too too much about comps though so who knows. Tnx for reading.
ALSO im not using a usb headset i've got the plugs going into my sound card...

So this distortion occurs on all songs from any
playlist but didn't use to be present on the same
    songs?
    MB67
    exectly,
every song now has a click click click click sound at the start and during the song and a small hissing sound during the song. Very strange and weird.
    Any suggestions welcome
