Crackling sound from iTunes (iMac/10.7)

I've seen some reports of crackling with audio in iTunes from Windows users.  I've noticed in the last few months (pre Lion and post Lion) that my iTunes occasionally but not always has a crackling sound with the music being played.  This doesn't happen with other apps (Spotify/EyeTV).  I can hear the crackling, play a different app with no crackling (same song on Spotify shows no issues) but iTunes persists.
Anyone else?

I've noticed over the last two months the same thing. I've been using iTunes for many many years and never had a problem. I am running Mac OS 10.7.2 on a 2010 27inch iMac and have ripped all my CDs which there are over 10000 songs in different bit rates. 256/320 and Apple Lossless. I only appear to have the crackling at 320 bit rate which is odd and its not every CD. I have tried re-ripping but the same issue persists. What rate are yours at?

If a simple reboot doesn't fix it, try resetting the SMU.
Depending on which iMac you have, one of these links will explain how.

  • How do I get 5.1 sound from iTunes on my computer connected to Bose T20?

I have my computer connected to a Bose T20 with an HDMI cable. I can get surround sound with movies, but not with iTunes. I only get stereo instead of 5.1.
I also have Apple TV connected to Bose and can get surround sound from iTunes when piped through Apple TV. Bose has told me to check the sound settings on my computer which I have done. The sound settings have 5.1 enabled.

  • I don't have a sound from iTunes !!!!

HI, Since the last upgrade, iTunes don't have a sound !!
I mean there's no sound anymore from iTunes. Other softwares, as FCP or Audacity work proprely. What can i do to re-find a sound from Itunes ?

  • Cant stream video sound from ITunes to stereo via Airport Express

I'm using a PC with wireless (Centrino 802.11g) with Itunes (Latest release 7.0.0.70) and for some reason the sound from Itunes video will not stream wirelessly to my stereo connected to my AirPort Express.
When the video is embedded in an Itunes playlist of MP3s, the sound will work fine through the AirPort Express with the MP3 tracks, but will toggle over to the PC speakers for the video.
    Any ideas gratefully received?

Airtunes actually only support MP3/AAC audio streaming from iTunes. That's too bad for video.
The things is, even with other Airtunes streaming software, the streaming delay is such that the song will be off by a few second from the video. I guess Apple have choose to do not stream video sound until this may be resolve.
Therefore, I'm not aware of any solution to this issue.

  • 'Thin' sound from itunes & ipod

I seem to be getting a 'thin' sound from itunes & my ipod either after upgrading to itunes 7.1.1.5 or after loading some music software for my SonyEricsson mobile phone. Anyone else found this?
I've played with the manual equalizer, pre-amp and sound enhancer settings until I'm dizzy, but the sound I'm getting through the same headphones or speaker set-up still makes the itunes/ipod sound like they're playing through a tin can compared to when I plug my mobile phone in and play exactly the same track (both at 320kbps). The latter sounds much richer. I'm buffled quite frankly! Either something has happened with itunes 7 or it's a conspiracy by SonyEricsson to make any other music software you have loaded to sound terrible in comparison!!

  • No sound from iTunes

I suddenly lost sound from iTunes. My volume is up and my speakers are working properly, but even though iTunes shows a song is playing, there is no sound. How do I fix this?

  • EFI firmware update - I can't get any sound from ITunes now.

I just installed the firmware update with no problems except I-Tunes won't output any sound. It is playing, but no sound comes out through speakers or through the headphone outlet.
I reinstalled ITunes latest version, still no sound output. Checked my sound preferences, still no sound from ITunes.
I do get systems sounds (the beeps and stuff), just not from ITunes.
Anyone had this problem? Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Try trashing iTunes preference file (com.apple.iTunes.plist) and repair permissions.

  • Super weird crackling sounds from speaker

Hello .. I have just been sent an LG S1 laptop and I have installed arch on it successfully. Only thing is, main speaker doesnt work. I know its functionnal, cause I had heard it from the initial vista install. Now, the headphones jack does work. And also, I use to own a very similiar but somewhat lower end model, the LG T1, which uses basically the same drivers and all, but the sound did work on that one.
Now what worries me a bit is that from time to time ill hear odd crackling sounds from the speaker. At one point, when I was trying to make XGL work with KDM, it did it to the point I thought my laptop was gonna explode.
Anyway, the fact that the speaker doesnt play sounds I can kinda live with, might just be a configuration issue; the crackling sounds howevevr, even though they rarely happen are like nothing ive ever heard or seen or whatever and they kinda worry me. ..
    any ideas guys ?
(the best way I can describe it would be like what an "explosion" sound on an old nintendo or other 1980 game console sounded like.. like a broken up saw wave .. very odd)

again if it means anything, I had an LG T1 not so long ago with relatively the same hardware for audio and I don't recall kernel 2.6.22 causing any problems. Only booboo with that one was that pluggin in headphones did not shut off the "external" speaker.
Now, since then I have gotten this new S1 model because the T1 had an unresolvable LCD screen issue and I got screwed by the vendor and its long story but they sent me this much higher end model, and the sound doesnt work on that one - but I cant compare with previous kernels because none other have ever run on this one, and I cant compare also because its not the same machine.
But like I said, the T1 and S1 probably have very different main boards, but the sound "hardware" is supposed to be the same - and one the T1, Im pretty sure that 2.6.22 gave me the sound I wanted.
Guess ill try downgrading later see if it works ... right now im planning a move to 64 bits anyway, and am waiting for the newer ati fglrx with AIGLX support to be released to do so ..

  • Buzzing/Crackling Sound from iMac...

    Arghh!!
My iMac is making noises at me once more. Facing the screen, the noise is coming from the very top left. Ive not opened up the mac in months...
...is that where the hard drive is??
    *nathan

This topic is really reflective of the general attitudes of a multitude of mac owners/users who seem obsessed with noises from the iMacs. This forum is filled to capacity with complaints/queries/opinionspanics, etc. pertaining to sqeeks, whooses and swooshes, buzzes, hummings, cracklings, chirps, peeps, etc.from their iMacs. Actually, it's kinda farcical. I mean, when we owned PCs, were we all consumed with the various and sundry noises emanating from our towers? Nah. But we all get to fretting about our macs like they are live and breathing beings.
It reminds me when I had my first child. I would very much like to beleive that our pediatrician was used to getting all kinds of frantic calls from new parents about their baby's "dire" symptoms whenever the little bundles of joy made strange sounds or looked kinda funny. In most cases it wasn't anything and all that was lost was a good night's sleep by the doc after being awakened at 3:00 a.m..
Perhaps we all have come to believe that Apple builds such bullet-proof machines that anything (and I mean anything) unexpected is cause for alarm. In the end it's a machine, a very good machine which beats PCs hands-down, but an amalgam of mechanical parts onetheless which provides us a service and a tool.
I gotta give nathan a big thumbs-up for admitting that his beverage was burping, not his computer. But it is so in sync with the whole persona of our expectations of our macs.

  • I can't get any sound from ITunes. The computer's internal speakers are fine (they play utube sound, for example). And the sound bar on itunes is all the way to the right. Still no sound from the music library. Any insights?

I can't get any sound from my ITunes library. The IMac is set to internal speakers, the volume bar on ITunes itself is all the way to the right, there seems to be no problem with the speakers themselves (they play sound from internet videos, for example), but I can't play music from the ITunes library on the IMac. Please help!

Is it possible that you have iTunes set to send audio through AirPlay to an AirPort Express, Apple TV, or other AirPlay device (which is itself not turned up so you can hear it)?

  • Can I watch a rented movie from Itunes (iMac) on my Apple TV 3 without airplay and home sharing?

I recently download a rented movie from itunes store in my iMac. My question is, if I can watch my rented movie in my apple tv without Airplay or Home sharing? The reason is because I don't want to turn on my iMac every time that I want to watch a movie.

  • No sound from iTunes movie download, while playing on appletv, iPad, or other

    Downloaded a movie from iTunes.
The video is fine; it displays on all iOS devices.
However there is no sound while being played on any iOS device, appletv, iPad, iPad mini, iPhone, etc.
How do I request another download that contains audio?
    Thanks,

    Howdy, ashkimber!
It sounds like the iPad may have been muted.
The following explains how to determine if it has, and also how to un-mute it.
For what it's worth, this setting does only affect certain applications, and having it 'muted' will not mute ALL output from the iPad.
    iPad: Understanding the side switch

    Mute
When you mute your iPad, only certain sounds are muted.
Sounds such as alerts, notifications, sound effects, and game audio are muted.
Media playback (such as music, podcasts, movies, videos, and TV shows) are not muted.
    Best regards,
