Cracks in Macbook case

This has been discussed before....from me actually...anyway, I had the cracks near the wrist "rests" on my black Macbook...brought it to Apple and they replaced it under warranty...that was less than a year ago...now I have it again....am I under warranty still?

If the unit is more that a year old and you don't have AppleCare, I doubt you will get it fixed for free.

  • Flaking black macbook case

My macbook that i have had for around 2 years is starting to have structure issues. Starting 3 weeks ago all of a sudden cracks in the main casing started to form. I don't really move my laptop (ie no wear and tear) its mostly stationary. The first crack was on the left side, top of the frame at the edge where you normally rest your left wrist when typing. The rack was 1mm inset from the edge running 2 inches vertically. This piece ended up flaking off a day later now exposing a small amount of metal i assume from the hd. I attributed this to a oh well issue. Now today in the bottom right of the enclosure where my right wrist sits, the same is happening.
so questions are. 1. is this happening to anyone else?
    2. its obviously happening from the friction my writs are making contacting it. It there any way to repair/ prevent.
    3. Is this covered or would i have to replace the enclosure to have it fixed.

Your image link doesn't work, unfortunately.
However, based on what you mentioned in your initial post, what you're seeing is a fairly common problem that is unofficially acknowledged by Apple, so you have a decent chance of having the part replaced at no cost. These cracks in the case near the trackpad are caused by the bumpers in the display.
Only the folks at the store can say for sure if the replacement is free, so you'll have to make an appointment and bring the computer in.

  • Case Cracks White MacBook (2006)

I have observed cracks on my white macbook (Late 2006 model) case (both insde & out side). Everytime I take an appointment with the Genius, they say that they are so busy to replace the case and they might need at least 3-5 business days. Since I did not have an alternate computer, I have delayed a bit. Now that I recently got a iMac, I would like to turn in my macbook for repair. Not sure if apple has spares to repair the cracked outer shells. Any idea how long and how much it costs to get it fixed ? Or can I return my laptop to get some store credit and buy a new Macbook ??

Only Apple would know that.  Also, ask Apple.  Not going to happen.  You can't return a 6 year old mac and expect to get a store credit.  Since the repair volume of the store seems to be high, get an estimate and leave it there for repair if you find the price of repair to be acceptable.

  • White MacBook case cracked

I have a white macbook in the newest shape. i have a couple of cracks and is quiet dirty from travelling also the apple logo on the back of the screen has come away is the any way of getting the full case replaced

No, your mac should not crack with only 10 months of use as long as you have been careful with it and it was not caused by user carelessness.  2 months left on warranty.  Bring it to Apple or an AASP and see what they say.

  • Advise on fixing/glueing Top Case cracks on Macbook White Unibody 2009 A1342

    Hi Folks!
I have a white unibody 2009 that has a crack on the top case by the ethernet port.
This is probably a stress related crack from picking up the case from the palm rest and the polucarbonate case just couldn't hold the pressure and cracked that area.
It is way out of warranty, but still wanted to check with you all if Apple might be willing to either fix it for free themselves or give me the part (the top case) to replace myself. This looks more like a design or material flaw, since this macbook has been handled just like any other laptop would. Normal use!
If not, I could take it apart and attempt to fix it by glueing it from inside.
Has anyone tried this and what glue would be the strongest fix for this poly material? Any brand you recommend? Something stronger than superglue or gorilla?
Also, not sure yet if there is any space between the ethernet port and the case to maybe add some kind of rigid plastic to the bottom of the case under the crack in order to add support and keep it toghether.
If so, what would you recommend I use as support? It would have to be a very thin plastic, not sure what though.
I'd appreciate "constructive" advise. Thanks a lot!

You’ve run into the main problem with user forums. Since we aren’t trained Mac mechanics and no one from Apple reads or posts to these forums except as users, you’ve got to hope that someone reads your post who has had the exact same problem as yours and has found a solution for the problem.

  • Silicone Macbook Case (Skin) - Where to buy?

I have been searching everywhere for a soft case (like an iPod skin) for my Macbook. I have seen the decals, skintz, silicone keyboard/trackpad covers, skinit, bestskinsever, etc. I even had the new Speck clear hard case, but it was quite uncomfortable on my wrists and scratched the side of my display. All I am looking for is what is found in these two links:
This is the website - in China
    This is a picture
In order to purchase, it appears that you need to be a distributor (minimum purchase of 300-1000!) or you want 1 case with 299 spares...
I have emailed their contact people to no avail. I have checked every site and tried every search I could think of.
Help, please??? Has anyone seen anything like this available for purchase? Thanks so much in advance!!!
(And BTW, my last name is Graham; hence the "Graham Cracker" ID - yes, yes, I know...bad choice...)

Silicone is a more or less an insulator. The macbook uses fans as well as the bottom of the case to dissipate heat. My main concern would be heat dissipation - as the silicone covers the entire bottom area of the macbook. Further more - as Bricks322 mentioned - the macbook draws air in throught the keyboard area. Combine the two factors and you got a macbook that's hotter than it already is.
It looks wonderfull - but if you're going to make your notebook suffer from heat - it kinda defeats the purpose. You may end up with scratch free toaster

  • Is the frame around the screen (where the bezel is located) included in the Macbook case replacement program?

I have had to have the top case on my macbook (white) replaced may times as I'm sure most of the owner of that paticular macbook have had to do. In the past I have experienced cracks on the handrest/keyboard portion of the case, but this time I have a crack where the bezel is right above the screen. Will Apple replace that frame for free also?

  • Applecare Repair Turns Into a Broken Macbook Case

I'm from Texas, but this past Wednesday I made the trip up to New York City to check the sites. When I managed to get to the hotel, I got on my Macbook and checked out how to get to the nice ol' 5th Avenue store. All was well, we checked out the place, etc. I get back to the hotel and, to my amazement, my hard drive had completely died on me. The click was loud enough to hear across the room while the TV was blaring.
Luckily, I have an Applecare warranty, so I decided to bring it down to the store. Needless to say, they repaired everything. The new hard drive was installed and they replaced the chipped palm rests, but I now noticed that they apparently banged the bottom of the case on something. There is now a crack on the bottom of the case.
It is strictly cosmetic, it doesn't alter functionality at all. To be quite honest, I'm not all that worried about it. Though, what I am concerned about is the fact that the crack could continue to spread or, in the long wrong, cause another problem. I would just bring it back up to the store, but I leave tomorrow morning at 8AM to make my voyage back to Texas. To make matters worse, the nearest Apple store to my home is about 120 miles away.
Is there a way that I can contact Applecare and just make a note of the occurrence that way, if it does happen, they won't try and say it's my wrong doing. It doesn't seem like it was dropped, but it seems like it got a nice little whack against a table or something. The bottom of the case is also scratched beyond belief. I always set my Macbook on it's cloth case, so they weren't there before hand.
I'm simply happy it's functional, but it is more than frustrating that it comes back with additional problems.
Any input will be highly appreciated!

When you call AppleCare, have your paperwork from the 5th Ave store and give them the case number. Also, request a case number for your reporting this incident.
    Good Luck
    Adam

  • Is the Apple Store still fixing chipped MacBook cases?

I have a case that has chipped, split, cracked, peeled - whatever you want to call it - on the right corner palm rest and the screen bezel. I have jus learned that this is a known issue (where have i been, right?); but, the Apple Care has expired for this machine. Will the Apple Store be able to repair or replace these parts? If so and if not covered, how much will this typically cost?
This is an old MacBook (2008?).
    Anyone have a similar situation?
    Thanks,
    Brandon

    Thanks for the info/inspiration.
I am all fixed, and here's what happened (for future searchers):
I called the apple Store and spoke to a Genius. He, understandably, couldn't tell me anything about wether it would be "free" or "covered" because he'd have to see it first. So i made an appointment for that very day over my lunch break.
I walked in, checked in by saying "I have an appointment at the Genius Bar". They took a look and took it to the back room to be fixed. I asked about the charge and got a very friendly "oh no, it's on us." They were finished in less than 15 minutes - plenty of time to wander about and daydream.
Overall, this was a very pleasant experience.
For reference, My MacBook is the late 2007 white model.
    Take care,
    Brandon

  • Whoops - broken macbook case

    Hello all,
Recently my Macbook has cracked at the bottom left hand corner of the case/shell which is now exposing some of the internals of the laptop. I'm a little worried about electric shocks when this is plugged in, as my left hand naturally sits over the cracked area.
It's also very sharp and hurts my wrist when using the laptop.
I was wondering if it's possible to get a replacement body for the Macbook or if it's cheaper getting a replacement model all together?
It's the November 2006 model, 2Ghz Intel Core Duo
Also, the plastic has broken where the screen 'ridges' touch the bottom of the case - this seems to be a common problem as I have read several posts saying the quality of the plastic on first gen Macbooks ain't all that!
Due to accidental damage, this might end up being an insurance claim so I'm interested to know what options I have before going down this path...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

You're talking about the area near the trackpad, right? Are you near an Apple store?
If the damage is what I'm thinking it is, repeatedly closing the computer has caused the plastic to crack away in that area. The bumpers on the display can put a lot of pressure on the plastic near the trackpad and it eventually cracks apart.
Sounds to me like you need the topcase replaced. If possible, head to an Apple store and talk to the folks there. You may be able to get it replaced for free (even if you're not under warranty), since this is a fairly common issue with the polycarbonate MacBooks.
If you can't get a free replacement, you can replace the topcase yourself fairly easily. The part costs about $40 on eBay.

  • White MacBook cases/covers

Anyone able to recommend a good case/cover/skin for a white MacBook (mid 2009), ideally one which covers the top edge of the keyboard area. Was looking at something like this, currently sold via Apple Store
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/TQ933LL/A?n=13inchmacbook&fnode=MTY1NDA2Ng&mco=MTA4MjU0Mzc&s=topSellers
but would appreciate any recommendations based on experiences you might have had.

    Hi Martin_UK,
I don't know of any cases that cover the top case as well, but I've always liked the Speck cases:

You can add something like this as well:

  • Hairline-crack in Macbook Pro display-- what to do?

    Hi all,
I have a MacBook Pro 13" that was bought in early February, and a few days ago I noticed a hairline crack (not a scratch) on the top left of my screen. it's met the centre left side of my display now. It's very thin and shallow, I initially thought it was actually a hair on my screen. Anyways, what's my best course of action? I've haven't taken my laptop around with me for a while, it's been sitting next to my bed for about a month, so nothing I can think of could have warranted the scratch except the cold weather that's been going through the country. Anyways, I'm a student, I can't afford to repair the display from Apple or by myself (unless I got Applecare, would it cover that?), what is my best course of action? I'm going back to school soon, so I'll be carrying around my laptop and want to avoid more damage. I was considering buying some Displex and a screen protector, but would that do anything? I scared that the crack would get larger and ruin the integrity of my display (even more so), and eventually I would like to get it fixed.

Only if they determine it's a manufacturing defect. Your only shot here is if it's within the original 1 year warranty. Which by the way, you have to buy Applecare within if you want it. As a student, you get a discount on Applecare and it's definitely worth having even if it doesn't cover this.

  • Crack sound Macbook Air 2013

    Hello,
i've got a problem(if we can call it) with my Macbook Air 2013(bought on july 2013).
when i type,i usually put my hands on the surface right next to the pad.
i do not apply any forces or put all the weight on the surface but it sounds like a crack or something similar.
and i also see that the surface goes down for a few mm.
    thanks

your touchpad is probably cracked... get it repaired by the guys at apple.

  • Odd crack in aluminum case under 27" glass?

    Hello!
So I bought a brand new i3 27" iMac last night at Bestbuy here in Columbus. After getting it home, unboxing, and setting it up I noticed two cracks in the aluminum case right beneath the glass (not under the glass, below it on the case). One on each side. Being on both sides it led me to believe that it was suppose to be there. But then I thought, hey, this is an apple product, if they needed a bigger ledge there for the glass they would have put it in! This thing is too beautiful for that to have been a design. Once I saw the cracks, I inspected it further and found a clump of dead pixels in the bottom left of the screen.
Now I'm obviously taking this back and getting an exchange for the pixels, but I'd like to know if this is or is not an issue with the case as well. And if so, I couldn't find anyone else with this problem here or elsewhere online, so I thought I'd share.
Notice the red line. It's identical on both sides. I was under the impression that the entire case was milled out of one solid piece of aluminum. It's a very thin crack, but it's just about as long as the red line is, on both sides.

I wanted to give everyone an update before they do what I did.
I went into Bestbuy to exchange my iMac. Both of their displays had those cracks. We opened up their entire stock of 27" i3 iMacs. They all had it. I ended up going to the closest Apple Store and found out that the front piece with the logo on it is in fact a seperate piece. Those aren't cracks, they are seams. Often the fit is so perfect is doesn't look like a seam.
    Anyways, thought I'd share. Lol

  • Tiny crack in Macbook Pro 13 inch screen?

There's this tiny v-shaped crack in my macbook pro 13 inch screen. Inside the v shaped crack it's cloudy and i can't see the screen clearly through the v shape. The crack itself is rainbow colored and at first I thought it was water or something. But it didn't come off. This is about a three week old macbook pro and I haven't dropped it, slammed the cover, or anything. I've been so careful. I just noticed it a few minutes ago. I was doing stuff on my laptop, and my eyes wandered.. To the little crack. What could it be? Will Apple Care cover this? I swear I didn't do anything to it.
    Julia

Apple may class this as accidental damage, whether it was or not as it could be hard to prove. However, it won't hurt you to take it into Apple or phone them up to see if they can do anything, especially if you've only had it a week.
