Crappy photo quality when inserting images, how to improve?

I work extremely hard on the quality of my images and when I use iDVD they don't look to bad, but when I insert images in between video clips in iMovie the quality of the images is degraded something terrible and my professional images look like they were taken on a cheap camera phone. Exporting the videos at the highest quality helps a little, but it seems to be the import quality which is reducing them down - least that is what it appears to me.
How can I improve the photo quality in iMovie?

Hi,
Defcom has listed the main fix.
You could also try the Bandwidth setting in iChat > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit drop down.
We would suggest 500kbps for some ISPs
Using Little Snitch does show that Bonjour Video chats do use the Internet
It is probably done so that the SNATMAP Server that helps connect Video and Audio Only chats knows you are busy.

  • When inserting image how do I force inline CSS not image tags?

When I insert an image to my page layout it always uses html width= and height= tags
    e.g. <img src="images/wordpress.jpg" width="125" height="112">
    This is driving me nuts
(I thought these tags were pretty old fashioned for current doctypes. Why does dreamweaver continue to use them?)
I want inserted images to be shown with inline CSS
    e.g.  <img src="images/wordpress.jpg" style="width:125px; height:112px;">
I can then more easily add more CSS like padding, floats etc as needed.
Any ideas how I set this up as a default or quickly convert?
(I dont really want to add lots of unique image classes to a style sheet)
    many thanks!
    Dreamweaver CS6

Image height & width values are not deprecated.  Unless you're building a responsive web site, it is usually better to have these attributes stated in the HTML.
But when I don't want them, I do the following:
Insert > Image > browse to file...
On the properties panel, I delete the width and height values, hit Enter.

  • Poor photo quality when importing slide show into Elements 10

    Hello,
I'm using Elements and Photoshop Elements 10 on Vista.
What I'm trying to do is import a slide show I made in Photoshop in to a movie I'm making so that the slide show appears as a menu item and I don't have to include a separate disk for the pictures. I've sucessfully imported it, added the menu marker and the disc works, but the photo quality is really crappy. When I play the slide show on its own, the pictures are fine. What am I missing?
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the forum.
    They work on several levels:
A subscriber comes with a problem/question, and then, hopefully, someone will have an answer
A subscriber comes with a problem/question in mind, and then finds other threads, very similar, and hopefully gets the answer
A subscriber comes to read, to pick up ideas, etc.
In your case, it appears that # 2 worked, just as it should.
As for your question, PrE can produce SlideShows for display from DVD-Video, as good as it gets. Where commercial DVD-Videos enter a different realm, is with Video footage, with motion. There, Hollywood uses special Transcoding software, that allows for many, many more passes to identify the areas of motion, to Transcode at just the right Bit-Rate, for best results. PrE does that with but two passes, unlike the US $ 500,000 programs, staffed by highly-trained experts, who do nothing but Transcoding, all day long. PrE is limited in that respect, but with SlideShows, it will be able to apply the highest Bit-Rate (the DVD-specs. are strict here, so, though higher Bit-Rate = higher quality, DVD-Video can ONLY go so far.) Also, Hollywood uses DVD-9's (DL) so that more Duration can be authored to disc, at the highest-allowed Bit-Rate, for each segment of the Video. With a SlideShow, the Bit-Rate will be as high as the DVD-specs. allow, and per the Duration of the SlideShow vs the capacity of the disc.
Now, there are some other considerations, such as the limited Color Gamut (and Gamma) of DVD-Video vs display on a calibrated computer monitor, or a calibrated Broadcast monitor. One needs to study that limited and different Color Gamut, and perhaps adjust the colors first, in Photoshop. PrE is not designed for Broadcast output, so lacks many of the Tools, that PrPro has. Also, very few PrE users have a calibrated Broadcast monitor hooked up for Color Grading. Last, even if one has produced the ultimate output, with full understanding of the Color Gamut, and used a perfectly calibrated Broadcast monitor, there is no telling what the calibration of the client's monitor (computer, or TV) will be. What is perfect on a calibrated Broadcast monitor might look great on the client's setup, or perhaps not. A Broadcast Engineer can only adjust to standards, and hope for the best, when the disc hits the public. Same for Audio. Who knows what "Aunt Marge" has to play back the DVD-Video?
For ultimate results, I would create a Timeline with a few Still Images, but with each adjusted in slightly different ways in Photoshop. Add a Title, like a Lower-Third, with the Color and Gamma settings over each version, maybe 5 variations, that are slightly different. PS allows one to adjust Colors and Gamma in many ways, so explore. Then, author that Timeline to DVD-Video, using high-quality media, and test on their DVD player/TV setup. See which version looks best, and note the specifics from that Title. Use that to process the actual Still Images for the DVD SlideShow.
Also remember, if one has set things up ideally, they will have calibrated their system and Photoshop. As Photoshop is a Color Managed Workspace, things will be, as good as it gets. DVD-Video, and TV's are NOT Color Managed Workspaces, and most consumer TV's are out of general calibration, having just the generic setting from the factory. Nothing can be done about that.
As mentioned above, if the playback is for a computer (not a DVD player and TV), then better Color and Gamma might be achieved by doing an AV file, and then burning that to a DVD-Data disc, for delivery. However, one still has the variables of the client's computer, its monitor and even the software player used. All play a big role in how that AV file will play for them.
Good luck, and I wish there was an "iron-clad" answer, as to how to achieve the ultimate results, but there are so very many variables involved.

  • Poor photo quality when exporting iPhoto slideshow

Does anyone know which setting produces the best quality for an mp4 when creating a DVD using iDVD? I put a slideshow together using iPhoto because I wanted to use the iPhoto scrapbook theme. I exported the iPhoto slideshow using the highest quality (standard display setting) which produces an mp4 1422 x 800 (H.264, 30 fps, 7 Mbps, ~907 MB).
    The iDVD project settings are:
    1) Best Performance
    2) High Quality
    3) Professional Quality
What doesn't make sense to me is that #1 claims to produce a total ~1GB DVD with a 995 MB movie and shows the Quality level as green.
When selecting #2, the claim is a total ~643 DVD with a 575 MB movie with Quality in the red.
When choosing #3, the numbers stay the same as #2 but the Quality goes to yellow.
Why wouldn't the higher quality settings produce a larger DVD with less compression? Which setting really gives the highest quality?
The default is #1 (Best Performance) which clearly produces the lowest quality video when compared to the mp4 export from iPhoto (appeared with a higher quality) and when compared with playing the slideshow directly in iPhoto (appeared with the highest quality).
Would the quality be any higher if I export the iPhoto slideshow using a customized setting? iPhoto custom settings allow the choice of about 10 different compression types from Animation, Apple Intermediate Codec, to DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, to H.264, to MPEG-4 Video, to None (and others not listed here). The frame Rate can also be adjusted from Current (whatever that means), to 8, to 60. The Compressor Quality can be adjusted from Least to Best. Would "None" as the compression type produce the best quality when producing the iDVD?
The ultimate goal is to display the slideshow on the project at my church. The easiest way to do this is to put it on a DVD. But as described above, the quality decrease from iPhoto direct play of the slideshow is noticeable when moving to the .mp4 and extremely noticeable when putting the .mp4 in iDVD and playing the DVD back.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or links to better documentation.

you just cannot export your slideshows in order to burn DVDs, with the same quality
That's an issue with iDVD and the DVD standards. All DVD media is downsized to 640 x 480 or the wide screen 720 x 480. It's the nature of DVDs, not iPhoto. If you use the Ken Burns effect in iPhoto you will need to use the largest 4:3 ratio images possible so the zoom and scan of the KB effect is working on the most number of pixels possible.
I've found that the best final image resolution is obtained by creating the slideshow in iDVD from stills imported from iPhoto at the 4:3 size ratio. The downside to that method is no KB effect and only one transition per slideshow. I play those types of slideshows on a 50" 1020p HD Panasonic plasma TV and the images are quite good. But good is in the eye of the beholder.
See Jim Symon's post in this iDVD topic: Re: High-definition DVDs. Also search his other posts as he was working out a workflow using Photo to Movie to create high def movies and burn them with iDVD. As I recall he found and posted his workflow at one time.

I'm not sure what the correct build number is for Dreamweaver 12.0.2, but it looks as though you have 12.0.1. Try getting the 12.0.2 updater from http://www.adobe.com/support/dreamweaver/downloads_updaters.html.

  • Correct workflow when inserting images into text, InDesign CS4

    Hi,
I am new to InDesign and I have a problem regarding a really basic thing and I would be very grateful for help.
I am writing an article which is about 10 pages long. It consists mostly of text. I have finished writing and now I want to add some illustrations with descriptions. I've already figured out it's best to insert images into the text frame so they behave as "anchored objects" and they move together with text when I add or delete something on previous pages. Now I would like to place TWO OR MORE images, one next to each other, in a line. This is a bit tricky but I created an object style with Position: Custom in "Anchored object options" and it works more or less fine. This works great but now it would be hard to add descriptions to these images that would still be anchored.
So I created something different. I made an empty rectangle frame, a small text frame under it and grouped them. Then I placed it in my master text frame and basically did the same thing as for previously described images. Now I place the newly loaded image in the empty rectangular frame and add text in the empty text frame. BUT now I have problems with frame size for different-size images.
What if I have a REALLY LONG article and want to add LOTS of images with decriptions that would be anchored in the text so I can edit previous pages? I can do this my way, but it's extremely uncomfortable and takes ages. Is there any comfortable, non-destructive workflow for doing such things?
    Sorry for my English.

    Hi,
    I would recommend following steps:
    Place one or more images
    Don't anchor them yet.
Arange them (the images) relatively to each other, add a text frame and arrange them correct relatively to the images.
    Group images and text
Copy (or cut) them into the clippboard
Set the curser into the text where it should flow
    Paste it
Adjust the anchored object (the group)
You need to group several objects to anchor them together as one anchor.
    Further recommendation:
For the images I would specify an object style for fitting, stroke, corner optione.
For text frames I would specify an object style for text object options, like text offset, and used paragraph style, no boarder, etc.
For the group I would spcify an object style which leaves above mentioned settings undefined (option field is grea or has a dash). But the anchored position of the whole group and text wrapping should be specified.

  • Capturing Video with FX-5900XT - Poor Quality of Image - How to improve the capture quality ?

    Hello all,
I would to know what is the best sofware to use when you want to capture Video ?
I used MS Movie Maker, and WinDvd Creator but I didn't like very much of the result, the video had noise, the color and the image definition was not good, is there any way to improve it ?
I am using the last drivers from Nvidia. I generated videos in AVI format and MPEG 2.
I have old videos from my JVC VHS, my connection between my cam and the video board is a RCA Cable. When I see the video in my VCR is good but the digital result was not good.
Is there any software filter ?
Is there any tutorial or White Paper about capture using Nvidia driver ?
    Thanks all for your help,
    Regards,
    Mario Augusto Rodrigues

    I can't see a relation between a hardcopy and a analogic movie digitalization ?
    Could you explain me ?
In any case the quality of the image is very good in a hardcopy.
Does the Nvidia Capture Drive have some adjust ? Sensibility ? Noise ? Color ? Sharpness ?

  • Poor photo quality when importing to iMovie

I imported some photos to make a slide show with added soundtrack. When I select a photo and click the "Show photo settings" it looks crisp and clear, just as it was shot. As soon as I deselect the "Show photo settings" button it looks blurred, pixeled and fuzzy, just an ultra low quality photo. The end result of the video slide show it's just a low end work.
I just want to burn some DVD's to show my photographic work, but such a poor photo quality it's not going to help me achieve what I had intended.
    Any clues anyone???

I'd like to follow up on your answer re: resolving poor photo quality. It seems the mere act of bringing photos into iMovie degrades the quality. You look at the photo in the preview window and it looks crisp. But then when you "ADD" it to the timeline, it becomes almost fuzzy. Isn't iMovie rendering the photos then and there as you bring them into the timeline? I cannot seem to make the photos look sharper and it doesn't seem to help doing the slideshow first in iPhoto, which I'd rather not do anyway.
    Any suggestions?

  • Problem with photo quality when exporting interactive pdf

    Hi guys!
I made a simple pdf with before/after retouching samples with photos overlayed, changing on mouse rollover.
When I export it as an interactive pdf (on lossless jpeg quality), the photo quality on the final pdf looks like a jpeg on 40% quality, really bad. Rollover works.
When I export it as a pdf for print on high quality - the photo quality in the final pdf is flawless but rollovers dont work.. (I checked "Interactive Elements: Include Appearance) but still nothing..
Pleeease help cause I can't find a way. I just need the rollovers to work and to have the photos in the best quality possible.
    Thanks,
    Jelena

If you haven't already you need to change the resolution as well.  Like this:
72ppi is the default which in theory should be fine for on screen viewing, but play around and use what works for you.

  • How to get best image quality when inserting PDF into Word?

I am able to insert a PDF as an object into Word, but the image quality is slightly blurry.  Is there anything I can adjust to improve image clarity in Word?

You can try to extract the images using Extract All Images or select the Settings on the save screen that you get when you save to a DOC, but I think the general result is that the image saves with the same resolution as contained in the PDF. It may be that you need to just adjust your screen in WORD. You might want to look at the image in WORD and see if it is being used at 100% or some other resolution. Bitmaps are not very forgiving if the resolution is changed for the document and does not like anything other than low number fractions of resolution display change.
