Crash Course?

I recently purchased a copy of the ibook Lonely Planet Guide to Australia. However it continually crashes on opening so I cant read it. I noticed other buyers have had the same experience. Any ideas on what we can do? I went to the Apple store in Dublin today and they said to contact the seller of the ibook as nothing was wrong with the ipad!

OK well I started messing around with options I could think of offhand. First I got QuickTime Pro to try exporting small segments into other similar formats (1080i 720i, messing with the aspect ratio etc). I found that if I exported the files to 720i HD 16:9 format 720x489 dimensions, I ended up with footage that iMovie correctly imported into itself.
I understand that I lowered the quality of the original footage significantly but so long as I keep that original footage I may find out at a later date how to import a higher res version. Perhaps iMove does not support all version of HD (which as we know can mean 3-4 different formats in NTSC alone)? Either way it's a functional solution for the work at hand and, while time consuming it's done.

I am watching a Creative Live Lightroom Crash Course with Jared Platt and Matt Kloskowski.  They mentioned that Lightroom CC was available.  I went to the Adobe site and clicked on it, but the download was for Lightroom 6.  What is going on?  I wanted Lightroom CC.

Yes, it looks like they've screwed up.  Some people have been able to update CC to LR6, some people get half way through the download and it fails, some people (me included don't get any option to upgrade to LR6 in the CC app... It's all very annoying.  I tried the help chat, and I got "log out of the CC and try again in 2-3 hours".  Well, that was half an hour ago, but I'm not holding my breath for getting LR6 today.

  • PPro CS5 Crash Course for Non-Linear Editors

Backstory: I was asked this morning to teach a crash course in Premiere CS5 for the students in the film program at my school in the Introduction to Editing class who have been using FCP. They have to edit several projects using RED footage, and rather than spend a huge amount of time transcoding it to a format which FCP can work with, the prof has just decided to have his students use PPro CS5 (which is also on their editing computers). Since the prof doesn't use PPro, he's asked me to teach the class for him.
I created a very brief crash course powerpoint to assist me in giving them the fundamentals of the program, and supply them with a resource to refer back to as they work on their projects after class is over tomorrow morning. I created this for students who already have done some editing in an NLE, and so don't need to be taught WHAT everything is and HOW to cut footage and put together a timeline. This is just to introduce editors to PPro CS5 who are not already familiar with the PPro workflow.
Anyway, I wondered if some of you gurus would want to take a look at it and give me your feedback on what I've covered well, what I might have missed, and any other thoughts y'all had.
You can view a PDF of the document at www.bryan.edu/pprocs5 The viewer will bring it up embedded in the page at about 40-50%, so you'd be best off to click the download link and open it in Acrobat where you can go full size with it.

    Thanks for the input!
I actually taught hem REDCINE-X last week so that they could use it to export their files to an intermediate codec that FCP would understand, and preserve the new colorspace. Unfortunately these computers are so slow that the export process was gonna take nearly a week for all the files they need to work with, so the prof opted to swtich over to PPro midstream since it can handle the raw 4k and supports the new colorspace.
I didn't mention the saving thing... forgot about it; but the conforming issue did come up and we were able to talk about that in class!
The class went okay, I guess... I don't know what it is about students these days, but most of them (like all but one) weren't really paying very good attention and they were just sorta goofing off, talking amongst themselves, etc... made it really frustrating to teach this platform!
    Oh well.

  • Please help Update me after a 2 year COMA - Crash Course from the experts!

I basically have been in a COMA for the past 2+ years and in 2006 was part of an Elite group of Tech Support - Research and Review team that also served as "Crash Test Dummies" for Mac and various related software, Quark, Adobe, InDesign. Then I went 'brain dead' and the company I worked for and collegues are scattered.
I was know as an Excel Goddess. I was up on the latest "known issues" related to MAC/PC converted files and could save many others wasted time trying to work around a 'known issue'.
I'm going back to college for an Associates Degree for Computer Information Technology to go along with the 25 years experience I have - I started at NCR in '79 when mainframes were the size of refridgerators. I grew up with computers - the languages - glitches and software pms unknown promlems.
I have a iMac G3 with AppleWorks 6.4 I believe. From what research I have done it seems the brilliant idea of BootCamp/Conversion via parrarells was a waste of time for a lot of IT people.
My Question is this - would I be doing ok purchasing a refurbished Mac [AIR?] with wireless / bluetooth included and should I forget about AppleWorks/MS Office and just get the iWork09 and kinda relearn the tricks and tips from reading?
Thank you so much - I want to update but I feel so far behind. I truly appreciate your opinions.
    Sincerely,
    JDNoble79

iWork is a fairly decent medium power collection of tools. But in the professional and academic worlds the MS Office collection is king of the hill. This will become especially true when exchanging files and data. If Excel is used in classes, then there is no acceptable substitute.
I spent 40 years in business and academia so I'm not mistaken in the recommendation. iWorks is simply not a substitute for Office. Since the OP is planning on returning to college he/she should have the tools that colleges and universities use almost 100%.

  • Crash course in creating spot colour

Apologies if this is a bit basic, but I am new to this sort of thing.
I need to create a spot colour – PMS 233C – for the image attached. Not the brush – but the base of the object.
Can anyone give a quick 1-2-3 step guide.

Here's a quick tutorial. In the Color Picker, you do have access to color libraries including Pantone for your spot colors. Type 2 3 3 quickly to go to that color in the list when you are in the Pantone color library.

  • Crash Course on RAM Please

Okay I think I've learned a lot about motherboards and how to OC them through the FSB. Now I would like to know if someone is willing to tell me how to OC the RAM. I know that raising the voltage wouild give it a little more space for OCing. I don't plan on doing anything with my RAM since I have PC2700.
From what I read the speed of the RAM has something to do with a ration to the speed of the motherboard right? I remmeber someone saying DDR400 would run at 1:1 with an 800FSB processor. Why is that? 200FSB x 4 = 800FSB so what does the equation for the RAM have? like 2 x 200?
I don't think I came across a Ratio setting in the BIOS for my motherboard (865PE Neo2-FIS2R). I plan on buying 2 sticks of Twin 512 Corsair XMS PC3500LL Sometime shortly.
Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    RAILVEN

Hmmm, thanks. So how would I set a 1:1 Ratio using a MSI 865PE Neo2-FIS2R and say PC3500? Would I need to clock the RAM at 400 instead of 433? I've read people had to clock their 400 RAM to 333 to get a good stable system. How does the RAM's clock speed connect to the CPUs clock speed?
For example if I am running my FSB at 233mhz, what would be a decent RAM speed to enable a 1:1 ratio?
    Thanks.

  • CRASH COURSE NEEDED in Authoring, encoding and burning BlueRay...

can, will my G5 running FCS1 Auther, encode and burn blueray with a Lacie 301115u Blu Ray D2 Usb2 Fw Burner?

If you can live with the idea of working outside the +Final Cut Pro+ - +DVD Studio Pro+ environment, you might want to take a look at +Roxio Toast Titanium 9+. This (very affordable) software allows you to encode and burn on Blu-Ray DVDs, provided you meet the minimum system requirements (which shouldn't be a problem, since I could run Toast with my old G4 Quickslver).
However, it seems the authoring possibilities are much more limited than with +DVD Studio Pro+. So if you're into very personalized and/or animated menus, than Toast probably won't be your cup of tea.
I'm currently thinking about using Toast to burn a short film shot in HD on Blu-Ray DVDs. The only thing that got me pondering about this decision is the software's lack of advanced authoring capabilities. This is a family application after all, not a pro software! But its affordable price is more into my wallet's liking, so...
Other than that, and as far as I understand, all you need to do to encode and burn BR DVDs with +Toast 9+ is to take your QuickTime HD (or DVCPRO HD, or else) movie and drop it into the application before choosing the regular options for burning: choosing one of the predesigned menu template, some menu options, the video format, the image size and compression level, etc.
Most Blu-Ray authoring software I checked seems to function roughly the same way: drop in your QT-AVI-whatever-codec movie, select options and burn. The main difference between most softwares seems to be the level of control you have over the encoding and authoring possibilities...
So maybe +Toast Titanium 9+ is worth a look, especially if you need your BR DVD ASAP.

  • Game Programming Crash Course in J2ME

    Hi boys and girls,
I have created a tutorial that walk through every step required to setup an IDE and create a game in J2ME.
The tutorial is available here: http://koderko.dk/J2METutorial/
The tutorial describes how to create a Pong clone. Focus has been on being easy to learn, and not on advanced "tricks".
    Feedback is most welcome!

  • Crash Course in Using an iPod Touch

I just bought a 32GB iPod Touch because my 80GB iPod was stolen. I bought it online and it hasn't arrived in the mail yet, so I'm trying to learn as much as possible before it gets here. For someone with a Dell PC operating through Windows Vista, can anyone give me some simple or some detailed advice on what is in store for me when I get my new Touch?
As far as the WiFi goes, I don't have much knowledge on this subject. I have wireless internet at my home right now, so can I get the internet through my home internet? Also, I'm a college student, so for the most part of the year, I'll be at college where we do have WiFi throughout most of the campus.
    Thanks a lot.

ipod touch features manual here: [Click Here|http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iPod_touch_FeaturesGuide.pdf]
when you get your ipod, you will need to connect it to itunes, and do some setup things. Then, you can put music, videos etc on it.
As to wireless networking, your ipod will connect to any wireless g or b network that you have a password for, or is unsecured. So it will connect to your home network. Have your password ready. You can connect to your campus's wifi, provided you have the security key for it, there is no mac filtering enabled, and it is a b / g network. Also, some collages / schools etc limit wifi access with policies. This may block your touch, so contact your it guy
    hope this helps

  • MacBook Pro randomnly freezes/crashes

I have a client (I'm a local tech just getting crash courses in Macs) who's MacBook Pro randomly freezes/crashes. I have ran a disk repair but the issue still persists. He has sent me quite a few different crash reports which I can't make heads or tails over really. They are really long - should I post them for assistance or is there any usual troubleshooting steps needed to be done?
I will post one, but all seem to vary and don't appear to be the same issue...
Please, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I have read the other solutions to this and have implemented all of them. I disabled hardware acceleration, and updated all media drivers. This slowed down the crashes, but Firefox is still sluggish. I'm running Firefox 36.0.1 on a OSX 10.10.2 multiple addons.

It looks like it was one of my addons. I'm adding them back in one at a time to see which one. I'm guessing Adblock Edge. I found a different adblocker and no crashing or hanging so I'm good for now.

  • HT2534 Can my family use my iTunes music, yet have separate accounts?

So here it is.  I've got my family.  We all have apple devices, each has an iPad, iPhone and then two computers.  Family of 4.  My wife has her account and my daughter shares that.  My son is on my account.  But I want to change that after my son spent $15,000 on in app purchases.  I'm not a computer savvy guy.  Now I'm getting the crash course lesson on the prenatal controls.  FYI all parents, don't think it can't happen to you, use the parental controls.  Is possible to have an account for my son, but he can still have access to music I've purchased over the years thur iTunes?  And then if I have different accounts, can I use the same computer to support the devices?

Use Find My Friends app instead.   Much easier to manage, and you won't need each other's id/pw's to do it.   They only need to accept your invitations and vice versa.

  • Cannot see new SQL 2008 R2 Express instance on Small Business Server 2011!

    Hi,
As it is stated on the subject line, I'm having a problem after I did a new install of SQL 2008 R2 Express and put a new instance on SBS 2011.
I'm developing a new program using SQL 2008 in C# and VB.Net. I have SQL 2008 R2 Express installed on my computer called "MSQL8R2EDATA" on my PC. Now I need to deploy it on SBS 2011 so I can do some testing on other workstations.
I'm currently running Windows 7, 64 bit, and it's named STEVE-PC. The SBS 2011 is named SERVER1, and it's 64 bit as well.
After installation on SERVER1 (SBS 2011), I then fired up SQL Server Configuration Manager and enabled Named Pipes, TCP/IP, and VIA.
After I've completed the SQL Configuration on SERVER1, I went back on my PC (STEVE-PC) and I tried to use Management Studio to connect to the  new instance MSQL8R2EDATA on SBS 2011, only problem is, I only see the computer name, not the new instance
    I've installed.
Back on SBS 2011 (SERVER1), I've verified that all the protocols are enabled, and the SQL Server Browser is automatically loaded and currently running, as well the MSQL8R2EDATA instance is automatically loaded and running, yet I still cannot see
it from my PC (STEVE-PC). I even switched from dynamic ports to a static port of 64719 (that was what the MSQL8R2EDATA was listening on that port when it was dynamic), and then added new rules to the Windows Firewall for program of the SQLSERVR.EXE, and
for UDP and TCP for port 64719 to "Allow All Connections" for Domain, Private, and Public; yet I still cannot connect SERVER1\MSQL8R2EDATA. I even disabled the firewall and then trying to connect once again to SBS 2001 and it still fails.
In case you're wondering, I left it on port 64719 since there are other active SQL Servers on SBS 2011 (SharePoint, SBSMonitoring, and ACT7).
Interestingly, when I run Management Studio on SBS 2011, I can see STEVE-PC\MSQL8R2EDATA and I'm able to log in and connect to it.
So what's going on here?!? Why am I able to connect to STEVE-PC which is Windows 7 64 from SBS 2011 (SERVER1), but I cannot connect from my computer to that instance on SBS 2011??
I really could use some big time help on this.
EDIT: Sorry for the confusion, but on the Windows Firewall (WF.msc), I did add new rules for incoming connections on:
    Program incoming connections to SQLSERVR.EXE
    TCP Port 64719
    UDP Port 64719
EDIT: To further assist, I have Management Studio installed on the SBS 2011, and I can locally log in and connect to the MSQL8R2DATA on SERVER1 with success. I even tried tcp:SERVER1\MSQL8R2DATA and again it is successful log-in and connection.
    Thanks in advance!
    Steve

    Hi,
Thanks for the response, but I have a question:
Installing SQL Express or SQL Server is not recommended on SBS
2011 because it is a DC, however technically it will work.
I'm a newbie when it comes to SBS 2011 and I'm taking a crash course on the subject. Can you explain to me what you mean by "DC"? Also, why
isn't recommended to install a new instance on SBS 2011?
As I also stated, I've added "New Rules" to the Windows Firewall to allow incoming connections on port 64719 for both TCP and UDP, and I also allowed incoming connections for SQLSERVR.EXE but no joy to connect to the SERVER1\MSQL8R2EDATA.
And yes, I can log-in and connect locally on SERVER1 using Management Studio with success. I even used tcp:SERVER1\MSQL8R2EDATA with the same success. It's my workstation STEVE-PC that fails. If that fails, then the rest of the workstations are going to fail.
Are you suggesting that I put the SQL Server 2008 Express on another workstation and just allow to to be
    accessed that way?

  • A (hopefully) short list of things I'm looking to get to working.

Hi! I'm a relatively new person to Arch Linux. I come from Debian/Ubuntu and was looking for a distro that was simple to use, but still very powerful. Customization is another thing that I value; Debian and Ubuntu didn't quite give me that sort of functionality without a server installation, which still ended up just feeling weird. I also found that Ubuntu's package updating wasn't as fast as I'd like. Arch has so far met and exceeded my expectations, but like any newbie I have a few quirks with my system that I'd like to figure out. Before I begin, though, I'd like to quickly explain my goals with my Arch installation:
    * I'd like to get a better grasp of Linux.
    * Instead of relying on large packages and suites like GNOME and KDE, I'd prefer to focus on small, lightweight applications to do my bidding. For example, I use Fluxbox as my window manager and mpd (with Sonata) as my music player.
    * As another software "requirement", I'd like suggestions for software to be very customizable so I can tweak it to how I want/need it. This is Linux though, so most software fits the bill.
Setting up the Compose and media Key
One of my favorites features in Linux is the Compose key, and obviously GNOME set that up for me in Ubuntu. I have a very loose understanding of how things work with the Xmodmap, and I've tried to use the method before in order to make my compose key, but it ended up reacting very weirdly. If someone could help me understand the process behind enabling the compose key and setting up my media keys from the inside, I'd be very grateful. It's an aspect of the system that I think is powerful and useful.
SOLVED: .Xmodmap works well, but you have to put 'xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap' in your .xinitrc if you want your settings to stick. If someone could point me in the direction of a cheatsheet for compose key characters, I'd appreciate it.
A File Manager and Desktop Environment
Currently, I use an .xinitrc in order to go straight into Fluxbox. I haven't installed any file managers or desktop managers yet because I'm unsure of what's out there. I've used nautilus with GNOME and Thunar with XFCE in the past, but they belong to their respective suites. I've heard some pretty good things about rox(-filer), but nobody's been able to give me a pro/con list. I'd love to hear some suggestions for a lightweight and easy-to-use file manager and an equally light desktop manager. If I could get two for the price of one, that'd be even better. Again, I value customizability. One pet peeve I have is scaling wallpapers. Fluxbox can use Eterm, feh, etc to set the background, but I haven't found a wallpaper setter that can support the '-a' flag from fbsetbg (setting a wallpaper while preserving aspect ratio) _and_ a background color for the parts that the wallpaper doesn't cover. If what I'm asking for is too unreasonable then I'm willing to listen to some suggestions that don't quite fit the bill. In this department, I'm looking for more exposure.
SOLVED: rox suits my needs very well! With a little tweaking it works just as nicely, or even better than Thunar.
    Wacom Tablets
I have a Wacom Graphire 4 and was able to set it up in Ubuntu with only a few problems. If I recall correctly, the wacom module is a part of the Linux kernel or something similar, so the process to get it to work in Arch would be similar, no? If someone could give me a quick crash course/refresher on it, I'd be grateful.
SOLVED: Thanks for the xorg.conf snippet!
    GTK theming/skinning, icons, etc
Which packages do I need in order to start changing the look of GTK and install icon packs? I'm unfamiliar with installing either type of theme... unfortunately the transparency of GNOME ended up hindering my understanding. Any guides that could offer insight to creating themes/icon and cursor packs, etc would be great, too.
    Databasing
When I was still using Ubuntu, I used MySQL to store various sorts of data. Since my Arch installation is focusing on lightweight and effective, are there any database packages that are lean and still support .sql files? I have a MySQL backup in such a file and would rather my data not be made obsolete. If MySQL ends up being the best option, then that's fine. Again, my ignorance plays a lot in my questioning.
ANSWERED: MySQL will be my database, just as before.
Despite being a newbie, I'm more than willing to learn about anything outlined above, or any other concern that comes my way. Any good reads or resources/references that you could offer would be much appreciated. I believe Arch may end up becoming my distro of choice. Thanks for reading through this mess of a big "hi I'm new" post.

This is my setup for a graphire 3 tablet which may get you started, don't know the
differences between a graphire 3 & 4. I'm not using the latest driver as I was getting some
cursor movement issues which I never managed to correct.
Install linuxwacom from community  pacman -S linuxwacom
Add wacom to the MODULES section of rc.conf
To prevent devices getting reordered on bootup create a udev rule called
