Recently, my computer has been frequently freezing while playing back video on Final Cut Express 4.0.1. This has been going on for probably 2 weeks now (and today, it happened twice in 30 minutes). I am playing video (fully rendered), then the screen greys out, and any sound loops about .2 seconds of whatever was last playing.
Sometimes the computer shuts itself off and restarts (like a kernel panic), other times I have to force the computer off. Sometimes the screen has small vertical stripes when crashing/freezing.
This MAY have also happened while playing back 1080i video in QuickTime as well, but I'm not sure. I've been using 1080i videos for over 2 years, so I'm not sure what the issue is. This is why I think it's a Mac Pro problem and not a FCE problem.
I put in a new graphics card a year ago, but I haven't had any issues with it in that time.
I've included the crash report. I see "panic" in there, and this time the computer restarted itself. If anyone can help what might the issue be, I'd be very grateful.

Try removing the Soundflower driver first then restart your Mac.
If that doesn't help, remove the PaefireStudio software, restart your Mac to test.
FireStudio Family - How do I Uninstall & Reinstall my FireStudio drivers on a Mac computer?
Beyond that try a different mouse and keyboard. If that helps, remove the Microsoft drivers.

I am using final cut express 4. It seems that any clip over a certain length, say 5 min, does not fully transfer! All shorter clips are perfectly fine. Is there some reason why longer clips are not fully transferred? (a half blue circle shows up on the transfer list, indicating that the clip was not fully transferred. When I check in the capture scratch folder, sure enough the whole clip is not there!
Is there some glitch in final cut express that only allows short clips to be transferred in full?Thanks for the reply. I'll try to answer all the questions (I am a relative novice). Your help is appreciated.

I did this and it was already unchecked. So this is not the answer...
The strange thing is, I have been logging and transferring with FCE for 2 yrs without any problems at all with shorter clips, but have come up against the problem with long clips (over 5 or so min) the whole time. I got around it by simply making sure I stopped recording after less than 5 min while shooting footage. OR if I accidentally got a long clip, I import into imovie and then import into FCE. Not very streamline and I worry about compressions altering quality!
I am now trying to import a 20 min and a 17 min clip and it only transfers around 3 minutes of each, I have re-tried several times and it happens repeatedly. The blue circle in the transfer list shows up as a half blue circle instead of full. Clip cuts off after 3 or so minutes.

Do I need a blu ray burner to burn HD using Final Cut Express?
I just wanted to ask a question. I am new to burning after editing is complete. I am using Final Cut Express and have recorded my footage in HD. After trying to burn a disc using IDVD I realized it does not burn HD. So to be clear, in order for me to burn my HD finished sequences and have them be HD I need to purchase a blu-ray player?....also everyone keeps talking about Toast, what is this and do I need it to burn HD. Any advice would be much appreciated.
ThankANY DVD player cannot play HD content no matter what media it is on. HD content needs HD decoder and other circuitry and S/W which is not present on standard DVD player, just like standard definition TV cannot play HD programing. HD content has to be down converted with application such as iDVD to play on ANY DVD player, at which time it is no longer HD of course. In order to play high definition disc, you'll need HD content on HD media, blu-ray player and HDTV.

My current os x is 10.9.5, using final cut express vers. 4.0.1. I have imported .mov clips created on a older mac os x (lion) and when I wanted to import them into fce, a quicktime conversion window opened up and converted them (I haven't experienced this in the past). I then imported the converted quicktime clips into my fce project. After doing this I took selected clips and put those edited clips on the fce timeline. When playing the video back in the fce timeline,I noticed
1) the video wasn't playing back smoothly like the original content
2) when looking at the timecode reading of the timeline, the timecode was sputtering as well as the video and audio. I exported to quicktime just to see if that was consistent, it was.
When I play the converted quicktime content independently of fce, it plays normally (no sputtering of timecode, video and audio. Need help to resolve the sputtering playback of converted video content in the fce timeline. I've never experienced this before. Any suggestions?When you say you converted the clips before importing them into FCE, did you convert to AIC or DV and do the converted clips match your FCE Sequence settings exactly? If not, go back and convert the original files again, using the intended Sequence settings as a guide.

I do video productions for a small local TV station. I use Final Cut Express to edit. I need a new video camera but am at a loss as to what to buy. I know I will get a digital camera but do not know the difference between just digital and digital HD. Also, I can not afford an expensive camera and need some advice on which of the available cameras would be best and also work well with a Mac. One last issue, I currently use a Panasonic #CCD camera that takes a tape. When I load video to Final Cut the audio and video are out of sinc. Go figure. Can anyone help with these questions. Karen
Hello Karen,
If you are using Final Cut Express, then look for camcorders that are AVCHD camcorders. Look especially for the AVCHD logo and specific mention of AVCHD in the specs. Most of the major manufacturers produce good quality camdcorders - Canon, Sony, etc.
Also, be aware that there are a lot of "not quite AVCHD" camcorders on the market (sometimes they say they record video as MPEG4-H.264/AVC) - buyer beware!
Most everything you are going to find on the market today is HD, which stands for "high-def".
Regarding your question about the Panasonic camcorder, it's best if you post that as a separate question, and please identify the specific model camcorder and the Easy Setup you are using in FCE. -

Try outputting it as a MP4 or M4V
If Final Cut won't output it, Mpegstreamclip will convert it. So will Quicktime if you have the pro version. -
Dallas Opening using Final Cut Express
Can anyone tell this novice how to create the opening credits to Dallas using Final Cut Express. The main area is the part 6 seconds into the opening where images go by in a box sections with black bars between each section. I understand the section showing the cast is using a spilt screen so hopefully I will be able to figure out how to do that.

Backup AVCHD Camcorder using Final Cut Express
I have previously used Final Cut Express to create a backup copy of all the video on my AVCHD Hard Drive Camcorder. However, since that time, I had to reinstall Final Cut Express. I can no longer remember or find how to do this again. Can someone please help? Did apple remove this functionality?
I just purchased FCE 4 with a new iMac but haven't used it yet. But I do know that iMovie '09 has an Archive feature that will do what you are looking for. It copies the contents of the camera in it's original Full HD format to the hard drive. I do this then import the video to iMovie using the compressed file type. With the original on the hard drive, you can always re-import to iMovie '09 (and FCE 4, I presume) if you want to use the Full HD original format at a later date.

I have been using final cut express for years and now want to switch to final cut studio 3. do I have to remove final cut express before installing final cut studio 3 or can I have them both installed at the same time on one computer?You can have them both on the same computer as I and many others have done for years.
Just go ahead and install FCS 3 normally.

Can you explain when using keywords and addding them to various clips pressing ctrl and a number eg. 1 or 2 it simply closes down FCPX. Just to the dock as would the yellow -sign. I am new to this program having only used Final Cut Express 4 previously.

Re: Why don't my arrows on the time line operate and allow me to move to the start and end of the timeline. Iam using the trial versionCheck System Preferences. I think Control-1 is used by something in the OS now. Switch it off. It's a major p[ain the way the OS is taking over more and more of the keyboard, allowing less options for application use.

Using Final Cut Express for Ipod Touch

DeanSo - I don't need to edit it, simply compile a bunch of videos together. The problem I have with iMovie 09 is that I need to see the list of video files by name. iMovie 09 won't present listings of video files by name, only by thumbnail.
To be honest - I'd rather use iMovie 09 as it seems to compile my files MUCH faster. I have a MacPro 2.33Mhz with 8 GB Ram, and a 24 hour video is taking up to 24 hours to compile. -
Can't use Final Cut Express Export Using Quick Time Conversion with iDVD.
I am using iDVD 08v 7.0.4 and until 3 days ago I could import and create iDVD's using Final Cut Express export using Quick Time Conversion. There was an update that downloaded for iDVD. Since then, I can only use Final Cut Express Exports that is a self contained Quick Time Movie.
I have never had this kind of apple and apple problem. I am disappointed that I'm having apple issues like this.Are you on latest 10.5.x release and latest FCE updates? Your info line says 10.5.1 and you didn't list FCE version. Not saying that will fix problem, but might help. You also might want to explain how you did your Quicktime conversion.

I have 8mm films transferred to .avi files at 18fps. Can I use Final Cut Express to convert to standard DVDs to play on a US TV?

Select type of project You want to do
I guess - NTSC 29.97fps - Select that from FCE menu / Easy Set-up
Start a new Sequence
DROP A PHOTO in TimeLine - at beginning.
Now project is locked to 29.97 fps
Now import and drop the 18fps clip in TimeLine.
Select to convert it to match the setting of TimeLine.
IF THIS IS A GOOD WAY - I hesitate to say - It works - but if quality is OK or not - I don't know
I DO : use JES_Deinterlacer (free from Internet) to convert the frame rate in my clips (usually 25fps) to 29.97 fps - Then and first then I import the converted clip into FinalCut to be used in my NTSC projects.
The quality done in this way - is very good and the program is free - so I can not want any better.

FR Reports developed with Admin ID
Hi All, The FR Reports developed using Planning connection with Admin User ID will have issues when a regular user ID tries to access report.... any id other than admin cannot see data at the top of Entity, Scenario, or Version.....IS it correct.....
