Crash / Kernel Panic related to Sudden Motion Sensor (SMS)

I have been having frequent kernel panics on my Macbook Pro since replacing the hard drive. I recently realized that this appears to be related to moving or bumping the machine. For example, I was recently working while lying down resting the machine on my abdomen - when I sneezed, a kernel panic occurred (log below). Based on the log, I have decided to disable the SMS for a while (so far I have not been able to cause a panic with SMS disabled). I'm wondering if this is likely (1) a defective SMS, (2) an incompatibility between the hard drive and the SMS system, (3) an OS flaw (or something that could be fixed with an OS tweak, or (4) something else I'm not thinking of.

  • NEW THREAD Sudden Motion Sensor (SMS) after 10.4.4 Update

I can confirm that I too have the same results as others:
Restart, check System Profiler, SMS is there
Cold Boot (from a shut down state), check System Profiler, SMS is NOT there
    You think they tested this?
My question is: Is it active or not, regardless of what the System Profiler states.
    15" PowerBook G4 1.67mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   BTO: 1.5 GB RAM, 100GB HD, 128MB VRAM

    Hi Rob,
If it's not listed in System Profiler then it's not active, or at least the computer doesn't 'see' it as active. You can download some AMS/SMS monitoring tools here to confirm activity of the sensor. If the little PowerBook in the window of the AMS Visualizer does not move when you move the 'book then the sensor is not active. Upon restart run the Visualizer again and you'll see the sensor in action.

  • Sudden Motion Sensor crash in MBP with SSD

Hi.  I replaced my 2011 17" MBP's internal HD with one, then another SSD from OWC, going from 240 to 480.
As indicated in OWC's instructions, the Sudden Motion Sensor no longer applies and should be disabled with this command from the terminal:
    $ sudo pmset -a sms 0
And using this command, we can see that the SMS is off:
    $ sudo pmset -g
    Active Profiles:
    Battery Power                    -1
    AC Power                    -1*
    Currently in use:
    womp                    1
    halfdim          1
    sms                    0
What happens all too often though is that my Mac issues an SMS crash while asleep if I am driving home and hit a bump in my car.  Just Monday, I was driving with my Mac open and on, the car hit a bump and I got to watch the Gray Screen of Death as the Mac issued a kernel panic from the Sudden Motion Sensor.
    But it's off.
FYI, I turned it off to try and stop this behaviour

Download an run memtest to check your RAM.

Don Montalvo was preventing the crashes by turning off SMS.  However, replacing bad RAM was the ultimate solution.

  • Sudden motion sensor - hardware malfunction - beach ball lag related

    Hello,
I have a macbook pro 13" bought in July 2009 with the 160Gb Hitachi 5400 rpm hardrive and 2Gb Ram. I also have the beach ball lag problem and have been reading many posts about it on this and other forums. However, I noticed today that in my System Profiler - Hardware overview, my sudden motion sensor (sms) is indicated as State: Disabled. I look at the state of the sms through the terminal window (sudo pmset -g) and is says sms 1!!! Something is wrong there! Then I executed "sudo dmesg | grep -i error | grep -i sms" to check whether there are any errors about SMS. and I get the following line:
SMS::checkForInvalidInts ERROR: we appear to have a hardware malfunction
SMS::setupInts ERROR bad hardware detected, disabling the interrupts
Then I looked in the Console at the System.log and realized that everytime the beachball lag was occurring, I was getting the same message in the system log:
Aug 23 17:07:28 localhost kernel[0]: SMS::checkForInvalidInts ERROR: we appear to have a hardware malfunction
Aug 23 17:07:28 localhost kernel[0]: SMS::setupInts ERROR bad hardware detected, disabling the interrupts
Although there are many posts on the beach ball lag and on the firmware updates, I don't seem to be able to find any information about this error what it means and how it might be fixed.
I also tried to test the SMS. When I enable SMS through the terminal command, I hear a click if I move my computer up and down through the air. When I disable SMS through the terminal command, I don't hear the click. So I'm very confused!
Has anybody got a similar issue with their sms and have they been able to resolve it?
    Thank you very much.
    Noemi

Hey, have you called Apple? I have the exactly same problem as you. Hope apple will give us a update for fixing this problem.

  • Second Hard Drive, Sudden Motion Sensor

Back in the fall I put a SSD in my 2007 MacBook Pro. It's working perfectly. I found the "OptiBay" product, which basically replaces your optical drive with an adapter for another hard drive. I haven't received it yet, but when I do I plan on installing it with a traditional hard drive. My question regards the sudden motion sensor (SMS). I disabled it because it's not needed for the SSD, but I was planning on re-enabling it for my secondary that I will be installing. I'm still going to boot off the SSD, though. Is there a way, or terminal code, to assign the SMS to a certain disk? I'm assuming it will just disable the root drive in the event of "sudden motion," but would this affect a secondary drive?
I'd love for there to be an option to change the identifier, from disk0s2 to disk0s3, but I have a feeling it isn't possible or would be infinitely more difficult... thanks.

Most drives are available with the equivalent of an internal SMS. You just have to check the specs. Drive manufacturers often offer two versions of their drives... one with and one without a SMS. If you get a drive with the SMS built in, you can just leave the MacBook's internal one disabled.
Here is an example of one of the most popular drives:
    http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/laptops/momentus/momentus5400.6g/
Seagate's SMS technology is referred to as G-Force. Note the product number: 5400.6_g. The "g" denotes the drive has a "G-Force" sensor.

  • Sudden Motion Sensor - Where is it?

I recently bought a PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz 15" (M9677LL/A). Apple specs indicate this model is equipped w/ a "Sudden Motion Sensor" (SMS), however nowhere in its System Profiler can I find any reference to SMS enabled, disabled, or even existing. Do all 15" 1.67 GHz PowerBooks have the SMS feature? How should I investigate further?

  • Sudden Motion Sensor panics

I have been having intermittent kernel panics and finally took the MacBook into the Apple Store.
The Genius took a look at the panic.log and informed me that my Western Digital drive and/or my Sudden Motion Sensor were the cause.

Other World Computing has sold a ton of these drives and has never run into this. The Apple Store kindly swapped in another drive and, after getting the MacBook good and hot (something that seems to trigger the panics), we whacked it around and were unable to replicate it.
They determined that it is the drive.
Does this make sense? Has anyone heard of such a problem? The drive shows no other symptoms.

Got this from Macintouch.com that says that, yes, indeed the Western Digital drives have built in shock protection that is interfering with the Sudden Motion Sensor:
    Upgrading
    Cyrus Bhedwar
"We swapped in a spare Seagate they had at the Apple Store and tried that. No KPs, but this isn't a definitive test as it doesn't always KP on rapid movement. Called OWC, and they had no reports of such an issue so sent me an RMA. Today I installed the new drive. The MacBook KPs when a decent motion is applied."
I recently read somewhere (sorry, no reference) that the WD has its own motion protection that interferes with the MB SMS. I have the Seagate Momentus 120 GB (1 week) and have not had any probs.
    Jim Cowing
Regarding James Ehrler's post on Kernel Panics and Western Digital 120 drives in a macbook - I can confirm. We have a 2.0GHz macbook with a WD120 that KP's on sudden (fairly harsh) motion. Didn't even notice this until I read the post and tried it.
    MacInTouch Reader
You're not the only one who's encountered this:
    MacBook/Pro Owners Beware
A light bulb then went off? we started to associate the panics with movement. Then it hit us like 3 tons of bowling balls, the Scorpio has built-in shock protection. The ShockGuard technology that WD employs is interfering with the Macs own head parking technology. We placed another call into Other World and returned the second Scorpio in exchange for the slightly more expensive Seagate Momentus (which does not have built-in shock protection). After installing the Momentus and cloning over the now tired image, we haven?t had a single kernal panic.
All that said, if you have a MacBook or MacBook Pro, DO NOT upgrade to the WD Scorpio line of hard drives. They are definitely fine drives, just not fine for MacBook/Pro owners.

  • Sudden Motion Sensor and WD Scorpio drives

I'm researching the 13-inch MacBook pro. I stumbled on this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=683913 which says that the Sudden Motion Sensor in Apple portables have issues with kernel panics when you use Western Digital's Scorpio line of hard drives. I was wondering:
    - Is there a way you can disable SMS in System Preferences?
    - If I get WD's Scorpio drive without their implementation of SMS ("free-fall sensor"), will Apple's SMS take over without KPs? Or do I have to use a stock drive?
    Thanks!

Also, the application Cocktail can disable SMS by disabling it and without venturing into the Terminal.

  • Sporadic crashes/kernel panics after switching to new mac

Hey everyone I'm really hoping that someone here can help me with a problem I've been having
In late December I accidentally water damaged my 2011 13' MacBook Pro, resulting in loss of keyboard function, however the computer was still workable. And I made do until the beginning  of March when I bought a second hand 2012 13' 2.5GHz MacBook Pro.
I put the ram and harddrive from my old MacBook into the new one, and everything worked fine....for the first 5  days
However I began to experience crashes(kernel panics?) where any number of things would happen...
Most commonly the computer would freeze,  briefly followed by an immediate reboot, followed by a error message saying something like "your computer restarted because of a problem"(after logging in)
It also presents as the computer freezing, with the sudden appearance of scattered purple/blue lines, and I am forced to hard reset. This is followed by the same error message as before.
I have also encountered problems with the computer not responding after being put to sleep(however this may have been fixed when I reset the SMC, hasn't happened for a while).
Does anyone have any suggestions as to things I could check or possible causes of this? Cause I have no clue.....
These problems have happened under all sorts of different conditions different,  work loads, ect.
I Also can't find anything difinitive in the console in regarded to any specific crash, and there's nothing consistent between them.
    Things I have done:
    -Reset PRAM/NVRAM
    -Reset SMC
    -Repaired disk permissions
    -Ran apple diagnostics
-Stress tested processor using "yes" command
    -Tested ram with memtest
Any thought you have would be greatly appreciated!
    ~P

    Hello iPhil,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your new-to-you MacBook Pro. It sounds like you have been on the right track in your troubleshooting. If you continue to have these intermittent but persistent kernel panics, you may find the information and additional troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful (apologies if you have already seen it):

  • Drive Upgrade: Sudden Motion Sensor & SMART

    Greetings,
I have a couple of technical questions regarding a Hitachi HD upgrade I am planning. I purchased the 5K500.B from Other World Computing (OWC) and had some concerns with the Apple Drive Utility when I went to format it.
I also purchased an external enclosure that I can mount my old drive in after I replace it. When I went to format the new drive (in the external enclosure) with Drive Utility, I noticed some differences between the old drive and the new drive. The original drive is a Hitachi 200 GB 7200 RPM which Apple supplied as an option. I will list my MacBook Pro information after this section. My questions are:
    1) SMART status reads "Unsupported" on the new drive and "Verified" on the old drive. OWC said this is because SMART only works on internal drives and SMART will work after I install the new drive. I just want to check the accuracy of this statement.
    2) My MacBook Pro has a Sudden Motion Sensor for drop protection. Is that built into the laptop or the hard drive? Will Apple's drop protection work with the new drive?
    3) Is the 5K500.B really a direct replacement with all the functionality of the original drive.

I read in one of your posts that the sudden motion sensor can be easily disabled. Could you please tell me how?
I can be online, or not, and the crazy spinning colored disc starts to spin, then if I pick it up and set it back down usually it stops and the macbook (4,1) continues with it's work. I guess that it is the sudden motion sensor although I could be wrong...Just seems strange that it normally stops when i pick it up, tap it, gently, etc.
Could you please advise? It shows enabled in 'about this mac' but I can't find anyplace to dis-able it.
It's almost impossible to stream video, although that may be from something else.

  • Sudden Motion sensor active in Boot Camp using Win7 with lid closed

My quesrtion to the community is:

Don Montalvo was preventing the crashes by turning off SMS.  However, replacing bad RAM was the ultimate solution.

  • Sudden Motion Sensor

    Hey all,
I'm contemplating upgrading my HD in my MBP and am wondering if the Sudden Motion Sensor is a Hard Drive feature, or a MBP feature.
In other words, do I need a "special" hd for the SMS to keep working?
    Thanks,
    Blue

It's functionality that's provided by your MBP. There's nothing to choose from in particular, however, do NOT use a Western Digital Scorpio. There's similar functionality in these drives that causes crashing or hanging.

  • Sudden Motion Sensor DISABLED?!!?

I am not sure what has caused this, but recently my sudden motion sensor in my 1 month old Macbook Pro has stopped functioning. I first noticed it being disabled under the system profiler. I looked how to re-enable it through console, but that did not work.
Anyone else having problems? I fear it may be related to high temperatures (80 deg Celsius playing Halo...
I will be calling apple tuesday about this, but worry that it may be a hardware repair issue.
    Responses appreciated

No on the dropping. Definately would have mentioned that if I had...
Totally came out of the blue. Called the phone line and they referre me to my local service retailer...
They're looking at it and doing some tests I assume... I'll hear back when I hear back...
    VERY dissapointed in this.

  • Sudden Motion Sensor disabled constantly after Leopard install and upgrade

    Hello,
After I upgraded Tiger to Leopard my Sudden Motion Sensor is constantly disabled. I have tried alot now, including a complete reinstall of Leopard (which now looks like a waste of time, since it didnt help at all).
I called Apple support yesterday and the guy i talked to had me doin alot of stuff - botting with a key combination, creating a new account, and now after his advise doing a hardware test and if that didnt work I should try reinstalling Leopard.
    All done, nothing changed. It still shows;
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
Status: Slået fra (danish, properly says disabled in english)
AMSTracker and all other software that uses SMS doesn't react on anything.
I haven't tried installing Tiger again since I have to use this laptop on work by Monday and haven't got the time tomorrow to install it again.
Has anyone experienced this, and anyone that knows a way to get SMS working again?
I use my laptop a lot when I ride with trains, but with SMS not working I feel kinda unsecure - dont wanna have a headcrash on the harddrive or something like that :-/

I contacted Apple today. My last call was apperently not registered in the system (sometimes the calls gets removed I was told... Ehm, what?).
The lady I talked to had to contact a technical department (and wait in a queue... Exactly as I had in 40 minuttes just to get through to her). After waiting on that, she returned to me and said that it apparently is a hardware failure so I have to bring my MB into a Service Provider (Humac here in Denmark).
I got a case number from her and is able to call Humac and ask them to get the spare parts home for that case number. When they get the spare parts, they should then call me and tell me. Afterwards I can bring the MB into the store when ever I got the time (as I use it work related, so I can't be without it for a day).
That is pretty much my 'fix'. Haven't contacted Humac yet, but will do that tomorrow. Gotta get some sleep now.
And yes, SeisMac and Neverball too is fun

  • Sudden Motion Sensor - Anyone else hearing it?

Recently got a new 15" Macbook Pro with the 320gb 7200 rpm hard drive.
Something that's a bit worrying is that I can hear the sudden motion sensor activating. In my previous MBP, which is about 2 years old, I couldn't hear it activate at all.
Also, I've got the new MBP on a stand to raise it up. However almost every time I knock the desk it's on, the SMS activates. Sometimes it doesn't need much force to activate at all.
I'm wondering if this is likely to decrease the life of the hard drive as it's parking the head unnecessarily so often?
    Thanks
    Chris

My MacBook Pro's Hitachi 320GB 7200 rpm drive also clicks when it parks. I don't worry about it. Hitachi's web site claims a MTBF of 600,000 load/unload cycles (or over 160 load/unload cycles per day, every day, for 10 years).
The noise itself doesn't bug me at all - my old G4 powerbook used to cycle the optical drive every time it woke up, but it never failed (4.5 years of near daily use). So a servo or some do-hicky clicks when it does what it's supposed to do?
If it fails, I'll have AppleCare replace the drive for me, and I'll simply restore from my TimeMachine backup or from one of my SuperDuper clones. I'd rather have the motion sensor parking the drives when the machine moves then NOT doing so and having a HD head crash when I carry the machine from one room to another.
