Crash on waking
I have a new mid-2012 MBP 13 - 2.9GHz/8GB with a 256GB SSD, running OS 10.7.4. When I started off with the supplied version of the OS (10.7.2 or 3?), I could close the cover on the computer to sleep -- or use any other method -- and the computer would wake as expected. Then I updated the software, which rolled me to OS 10.7.4 plus a variety of other updates. Now, I my MBP 13 cannot sleep and wake without crashing. My screen freezes with a spinning pinwheel. My mouse can move that pinwheel, but all other inputs are not recognized. I searched the support discussions, but found no solutions that work for me. The most promising solution was to do a clean reload of the OS with a Time Machine backup. This is how I know that this behavior is related to the updated software. Any ideas?
Linc – Thanks for the suggested actions. I entered the BOOT_TIME command, but no messages were displayed. I have the following text for the period of this event. I checked for messages in the system diagnostic reports, but it was completely empty. Hope that this helps.

Macbook pro 2010 crashes after waking from sleep
Hi,
I upgraded to mountain lion a month or so ago and ever since my MBP often crashes after waking from sleep. I've included the error report below. Any help would be appreciated. After it restarts, it works fine. Problem consistently happens after waking from sleep.
Thank-you

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video -
I've been delighted with my MBA which I've now had for a month. However, I have an intermittent problem where the machine appears to crash when waking from sleep. The log-on password box appears as normal and I enter the password. Then the screen goes black, although the mouse pointer is still there and can be moved. The keyboard appears to be locked because I get a beep when I press any key.
So far, the only way to get out of this is to switch off and then reboot. Everything then continues to work ok for several days until the same problem reoccurs. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a known culprit?I've had this happen a few times too.
Occasionally (1 out of 10-20 times), the MBA (which has otherwise been working great) will crash completely when waking up from Sleep mode. The heart light is pulsating properly, but upon opening the screen, the screen stays blank, the heart light is out and the Air is unresponsive to any keyboard input or mouse button input.
Holding the power button down briefly does not power up the computer either, though once the Air showed a dimmed screen and a small white progress bar mid screen was shown and booted taking about 15 sec (I'm assuming it was reading from /private/var/vm/sleepimage). In all of the other instances holding down the power button for a couple of seconds to initiate a cold boot was required.
This has happened while on battery power and while hooked up to the AC adapter. The computer upon booting has a decent battery level (wasn't below 50%). Seems like the RAM is loosing power upon waking and the computer is trying to restore from the saved RAM contents on the HD, or the computer has completely lost track of being asleep and has to be cold booted.
OS updates and Firmware updates have all been applied and are fully up to date.
Model Name: MacBook Air
Model Identifier: MacBookAir1,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 1.8 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MBA11.00BB.B03
SMC Version: 1.23f9
I can't seem to reliably replicate this behavior, it happens intermittently and is a little annoying. I'm used to my Mac Laptops sleeping and waking quite quickly/reliably.
Hope Apple fixes this soon.
Dave
PS. I did post this to Apple's Feedback page as mentioned above, if anyone else has experienced this, you'll want to do that too.

IMac crashes after waking from sleep
Hi Guys,
Ok I recently updated my intel iMac and since then whenever I put my iMac to sleep using the power button on the back, it crashed after waking it.
The screen shows the cursor on a black background (my desktop is not visible) and I cannot move the mouse or do anything but reset it.
Any ideas how to resolve this?My laptop crashed daily from the first day for about 7 months until I did these. After that no crashes:
1. Reset PRAM:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/26871.html
Check that you hear the Apple beep at reboot.
2. The crash is due to com.apple.ReportCrash.Self who is looking for his plist file in another directory where it is... Basically some app crashes and com.apple.ReportCrash.Self is invoked, but it is not ready and crashes the system ... (symptoms after coming up from sleep: black/white noise display, dead display, app crash followed by system crash, freezing, etc)
The fix is here:
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=192563
or below (the directories may not be exact):
"Tired of seeing this error in your system.log?
com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[80] (com.apple.ReportCrash): Falling back to default Mach exception handler. Could not find: com.apple.ReportCrash.Self
Well here's a quick and simple fix...
Navigate to: System>Library>LaunchAgents>com.apple.ReportCrash.Self.Plist
Copy the file: com.apple.ReportCrash.Self.Plist
Navigate to: Users/Home/Library
Create a new folder in Library titled: LaunchAgents
Paste: com.apple.ReportCrash.Self.Plist in LaunchAgents
Delete the original: System>Library>LaunchAgents>com.apple.ReportCrash.Self.Plist
3. Reboot. -
System crashes after waking; problems with distnoted, graphics chip error
I am running 10.3.9 on a Dual 1 GHz G4, with 1.5 GB SDRAM, a GeForce4 Ti 4600 LCD display, and a LaCie 1394 external drive. I have recently started to put my computer to sleep at night, rather than leaving it running 24 hours a day (I also installed sleepwatcher, to allow me to put my computer to sleep remotely, and anacron, to allow the nightly system maintenance jobs to continue to run). This was working fine for about a week, but for the last two days, when I woke my computer up in the morning, I got kernel panics after a few minutes. First some aspects of the display would start to get mangled (e.g. strange lines appearing, some text that I typed not showing up, icons in the dock looking speckled, etc.), then some applications would stop responding, and then a minute or so later I would get the feared kernel panic message ("You need to restart your computer" in multiple languages).
This problem only seems to occur after the computer has been asleep for a long time (I've only experienced it after it's been asleep for 12 hours or so, and not when it's only been asleep for a few minutes). The only thing I can think of that I've changed in the last few days is an AppleScript that mounts my external LaCie drive (using "do shell script diskutil mountDisk ...") before backing up my files - using FoldersSynchronizer - then putting my computer to sleep (before I was never UNmounting this drive, so I didn't have to mount it in the AppleScript - I was still using the script to back up the files then put the computer to sleep).
I have tried running Apple's Disk Utility (both to repair the permissions, and to repair the disk), DiskWarrior (to rebuild my startup disk), fsck, and TechTool Deluxe. None seemed to reveal any major errors except the "Surface Scan" in TechTool, which failed, presumably because of media defects in the disk (but my understanding is that fixing this would require reformatting my disk, something that I only want to do as a last resort).
My system.log shows the following, from the time I woke my computer to the time I restarted (I've highlighted some suspicious-looking lines). It seems like the problem might either be occurring in distnoted, or with the graphics chip. Any thoughts on how I can determine the cause of the problem?

Yesterday's crash looks similar, except that the Graphics chip error occurs 13 seconds before the distnoted error (rather than after the distnoted error), and rather than a crash of "MouseWorks Background" there was a crash of "WindowServer". The distnoted.crash.log refers to the following exception:

(I can post this whole log if it would be helpful.)
Any thoughts on what might be causing this problem? I will continue to test the effects of changing various aspects of my configuration, but since I can only get the problem to occur once a day (after my computer has been asleep for a while), it might take me a few days or weeks to track the problem down through blind trial-and-error.
Thanks!
Dual 1 GHz G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9) 1.5 GB SDRAM, GeForce4 Ti 4600 LCD display, LaCie 1394 external driveAfter a little experimentation, I've managed to narrow the problem down a little, but still haven't resolved it. My computer still crashes almost every time I wake it up after a long sleep (multiple hours). Things work fine for a few minutes, but then some aspects of the display start to get mangled (e.g. strange lines appearing, text becoming distorted, etc.), then some applications start crashing and the system hangs. Sometimes I get a kernel panic, but not always - but I always need to reboot to solve the problem.
The errors in the system log files differ from crash to crash, but the one thing that seems to be consistent is that I get a "Graphics chip error". Is this usually a hardware problem, or can it be due to a software problem? Sometimes this graphics chip error is the first error to occur, although sometimes an application will crash a few seconds before the graphics chip error is recorded in the system.log.
In my original post, I suggested that the problem might be due to an AppleScript that mounts an external drive. I have since determined that this is NOT the cause of the problem.
Any thoughts on what might be going on?

No difference. Anybody else?

Thank you for your help.Since I setup my IMac with static local private IP, no crash...
It's strange that DHCP client was the source of my issue, but no crash yet. -
Bluetooth crashing after waking from sleep
I have a Bluetooth mouse (Mac) and Bluetooth keyboard (Mac) that I use with my MacBook Pro. They work fine if the machine has not gone to sleep - however, on waking, they will work for approximately 10 seconds and then fail. The unit still thinks it is connected - it can see battery power in System Preferences for both devices - but neither will work on screen. Eventually Bluetooth Setup and/or System Preferences will crash, but when I try to send a report to Apple, the reporting system hangs as well. When I try to shut down, the whole thing hangs. I installed Leopard about two weeks ago.
Seems like some iMac users are having a similiar problem so I posted there also - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6237303
Curious. What else do you people have plugged into your USB / Firewire ports?
If you have usb/firewire devices - Have you tried unplugging some devices, then trying to sleep?
It seems like my SnowBall USB Mic, if I keep it plugged in while I sleep and wake using my Bluetooth mouse, the mouse and whole bluetooth system will freeze up. I have to eventually hard shutdown by holding the power button down. -
MacBook Crashing after waking from sleep w/ new BT keyboard
After waking my computer from sleep by opening the lid, as soon as I begin to type, my screen goes gray and crashes. This consistently happens.
Anyone else with this problem?I have a strange set of circumstances. First my wireless mighty mouse cursor began skipping. After several restarts, it stopped doing that. However, my apple bluetooth keyboard stopped working and has not worked since.
Even more strange... the bluetooth symbol in the finder is grayed out, although the mouse is connected and works just fine! The bluetooth controls shows that it has "found" the keyboard but cannot connect to it. I have tried everything listed in these forums and nothing works. According to my computer, there is no active bluetooth connection even though the bluetooth mouse works.
Any other ideas? This is really frustrating. -
Anyone else getting crashes on waking?
I am finding Aperture 3 regularly crashes my machine after waking up from sleep. The screen re-appears, but everything is frozen.
Don't know whether this is a Snow Leopard or an Aperture problem.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks!I actually dont use any of my apple addresses. I'm pretty well lodged in the google ecosystem. I wanted icloud for find my phone, contact syncing, and imessage. I had mac.com but never really took advantage of it, so let it lapse (more fool me, lost the address even though thats my appleID) and the same thing happened when I took me.com a couple of years later (and was too late to get my mac.com address switched over.... which I still think is insane, nobody else has it but me, there doesnt seem to be any logical or technical reason not to allow it... but thats a whole nother issue which only meets brick walls).
The upshot is, these emails are going to addresses and IDs which are not in use. Ergo... either there is a big security breach, or the spammers have a much more sophisticated system for sending to random people within a domain. I'm leaning towards the first. I've only been getting these mails this week. Prior to that, nothing.
I dont think moving a message to junk does much more than mark it as spam for you. Its not like in gmail where if you do that, its for the whole system, and x reports means it gets classed as spam for everyone. -
Recently (june 2008) I've had to take my MacBook Pro to an Apple shop in order to fix a malfunctioning screen (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1591913&tstart=0).
After I got it back a week later (with a new logicbaord) everything worked as expected, except 'waking up from sleep' (to clarify, closing the lit of my MBP and opening it "30 mins >" later).
This crashed my MBP 99% of the time. Apart from not responding, the dock, menu bar and windows looked corrupted.
Like this:
Image:
Sometimes 'killall dock' from the Terminal seemed to help, but usually a hard reset was required in order to continue using my Mac.
I've searched the web, and I've tried the following attempts to resolve the problems:
- Reset PRAM cache http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
- Reset the dock by removing the com.apple.dock.plist file http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1304640&tstart=0
- Complete system reinstall using a Time Machine backup (restored my profile)
- Make MBP goto sleep without network shares or any network connections enabled
- Make MBP to sleep without any running apps (like Mail, iTunes etc)
The above items did not fix my problem. I then created a new 'blank' account on my system. When logged in as the 'new' user the system would not crash!
So, it's safe to say smething within my current profile makes my machine crash.
Does anyone out there have any tips or solutions to the problem?
Cheers,
GijsI've downloaded the demo of Leopard cache cleaner and performed 'Light cleaning' of all caches (Local, System and All users).
It rebooted my system and after booting, logging in and checking my mail, I closed the lit.
This morning I opened the lit and expected another crash.
Great news, it didn't crash!!
Conclusion (so far) it's most likely not a hardware error, but somewhere along the line something had gone bad and corrupted a cache file.
Thank you for your time and effort. -

Trusteer software has caused many issues for Mac users with Safari as noted from the results of an ASC Trusteer / Rapport search here > Community Search: Apple Support Communities
Uninstall Rapport (Trusteer) >> Uninstalling Rapport on Mac OS X | Support
Restart your Mac after the Trusteer software is uninstalled.
If the Mac generaes another kernel panic, McAfee is problematic and has also caused kernel panics for Mac users. Check the McAfee site for uninstall instructions.
The ab.k.engine, botht spsys.drivers, logmein, and BlackBerryUSB are problematic, but I'd start with removing Trusteer first.
If you want to have aniti virus sofware installed, download and install ClamXav but best to not install any software at all until the kernel panics stop.
ClamXav is free and Mountain Lion v10.8 compatible.

Satellite P200D-11R sound and graphics crash after waking up from sleep mode
Hi,
I am wondering if anyone here has had similar experiences to mine (below) or can offer any solutions.
I have upgraded my P200D-11R OS to Vista 64 Ultimate to take advantage of the extra performance. I also add that the BIOS has already been updated to version 1.4.
Well, everything works fine with the standard 2Gig of RAM which the laptop was supplied with originally, however, when I upgrade the RAM to 4Gig (2 x 2GB Samsung 667mHz modules), sound and graphics problems appear every time the machine is brought back from sleep mode.
The sound card makes a very laud fuzzy noise every time it wants to play a sound and the graphics produce lots of horizontal lines on the screen. I then just have to restart the machine which means loosing all my unsaved work.
Everything works fine as long as the machine does not enter sleep mode. I have currently disabled the sleep mode to prevent the machine from entering it but I am finding life very hard without it.
I am very surprised and also disappointed at the fact that Toshiba did not test these machines with Vista 64 Ultimate and 4Gig of RAM!
Extra info:
The memory is the same Samsung type as the 1Gig modules supplied by Toshiba originally with the machine, and the part number Toshiba recommends.
I have tried installing other (more recent) device drivers by Realtek and ATI without any improvements.
The memory modules pass all tests and are not defective. They have also been tested on my friends Dell notebook with no problems even in sleep mode.
I have installed my friends Dell 2Gig memory modules in my P200D and they too produce exactly the same results with post-sleep crashes.
My thoughts are that this must be another BIOS issue unless anyone can shed some light on the issue from another angle.
Please help! Many thanks in advance.Hi Sascha
Since you are running a Vista 32bit version, the upper limit of the memory recocnised by the machine is 3.2gb which is the maximum a 32bit operating system can address and use. The diffrence here is that I also upgraded my OS to Vista Ultimate 64bit to get yet better performance out of the 64bit dual AMD processor.
3.2gb of RAM on 32bit OS does not necessarily increase the performance. However, it keeps the performance stable when you open many more programs at the same time since the machine has more RAM to play with before staring to use the much slower hard drive as operating memory (Page File), to keep all thoes open programs running.
A 64bit OS such as Vista Ultimate 64, recognises the whole 4gb of RAM and much more (for instance, 8gb with 2 x 4gb RAM modules). The 64bit OS itself would generally consume more RAM to start with, however, with 4gb I found the general performance to be much better. Going back to the problem however, my P200D-11R with Ultimate 64 and 4gb RAM refuses to wake up from sleep mode gracefully and the graphics and sound crash every time, forcing me to restart.
My feelings at present is that eventhough your machine may be slightly different, I bet if you upgrade your OS to 64bit, the machine will start recognising all of the 4gb of RAM and post-sleep crashes will start to appear! -
10.8.4 consistent nvidia crash when waking from sleep
On a Mid 2012 Macbook Pro I am getting a crash every time the nvidia card is engaged and the laptop goes to sleep. This only started occuring after ugprading to 10.8.4 and I have since zeroed, formatted and reinstalled with a minimal set of applications. The crash is easily reproducible and I can also verify that it only occurs if the computer goes to sleep while the nvidia card has been activated (using gfxCardStatus) not if it sleeps while the Intel onboard is engaged. Unfortunately I only use OSX to use music software like Ableton Live. Whenever I start Ableton Live 9 the nvidia GPU is engaged (why I have no idea) then if I walk away from the computer for 20 minutes I've crashed.

Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application unistaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Why does Safari Crash after waking from sleep?
I've noticied that Safari consistantly crashes after my MacBook wakes from sleep. This hadn't occured before upgrading to Lion. Any suggestions?

One or more of the Safari extensions is not compatible with Lion.
Go to ~/Library/Safari/Extensions
Move the extensions you see in bold print above to the Desktop.
Try Safari. If it doesn't crash, move one extension back to the Extensions folder at a time, launch Safari to test.
Process of elimination.
You also need to delete the cache.db file.
Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
Move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.
Same goes for icons. Go to ~/Library/Safari. Move the WebpageIcons.db file from the Safari folder to the Trash. -
Ibook won't wake up or crashes after waking from sleep mode
I have now had this problem for the last year with my new ibook g4 and I can confirm that the problem is present at OS X version 10.3.0 - 10.3.9 and 10.4.0-10.4.5 . I'd manage to solve it but once in a while it shows up again and i have to solve it all over again. Apple doesn't seem to care although it makes your iBook totally unusable if you can't put it to sleep mode, because of the fact that you can't leave your iBook ON while the lid is closed. Ok as I said I have this problem once in a while but I allways manages to solve it, here are my observations:
Leting the computer go into sleep mode by itself (not by closing the lid) will not result in a crash.
Before a crash the following allways occour:
1) The system gets highly unstable. Programs (mostly safari, mail and itunes) will crash without warning. The mouse reacts very slowly and lags behind. The mouse lag is a shure indication that the system will crash during the next seconds or minuts.
2) While set to automaticly connect to favorite network, the airport won't connect imidiatly, but it will take a few seconds more than usual before it connects.
3) The system sometimes crashes before it can activate the backlight resulting in the situation where people think that the system can't wake up from sleep mode and won't react.
Only forcing the computer to sleep mode can cause this failure (by pressing "sleep mode" or by closing the lid).
What i did to rule out some sources resulting in this error:
1) Something like this problem can happen when having a bad memory socket or bad memory, so I'd ran Apples Hardware test and memtest OSX, but no failure was indicated.
2) Ran the usual repair of disk permissions (like 10^6 times ), without any changes.
3) Tried to reset the PMU (Power managing unit), without any changes.
4) Also tried to make a clean installation with panther 10.3 and tiger 10.4, without changes. Before installing anything (no prgrams or updates) the system still crashes. Even after updating to. 10.3.9 and 10.4.5 the problem is still present
The solution:
Well I found out that the problem has to do with to power options. That would normally mean that reseting the PMU would help, but as I already said this didn't change anything. Apparently the system is not able to wake up the Harddisk from sleep mode, and that's basicly the problem. I don't understand why it doesn't crash when going to sleep mode all by itself, but aparently there's something diffrent by forcing the system to sleep mode. Fourthermore it's not so "happy" to change those settings for the harddisk (I will explain later).
Solution:
1) Basicly just UNCHECK the option "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment. And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never" , do this for Battery and AC Power settings.
2) And put CPU usage to "Automatic", do this for Battery and AC Power settings
3) Restart the ibook. When it plays it's startup sound reset PVRAM by holding the following keys down before the backlight turns ON: OptionCommand+PR , when you hear the startup sound again release the buttons and start OSX normally.
Now as I said this problems comes once in a while and that has to do with the fact that repairing my disk permissions can change/reset the above changes. Even if it isn't beeing displayed graphicly repairing the disk permission have reseted those changes, resulting in the fact that the system is crashing again.
So to solve this do the following for Battery and AC power settings:
1) CHECK/MARK the "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment and put CPU usage option the low or high. And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never"
2) Restart the ibook.
3) UNCHECK the option "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment". Put CPU usage option back to "Automatic". And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never"
4) Restart the ibook again. When it plays it's startup sound reset PVRAM by holding the following keys down before the backlight turns ON: OptionCommand+PR , when you hear the startup sound again release the buttons and start OSX normally.
So now it doesn't crash again.
I've read all the threads of people having this problem and apparently it has been present since OSX 10.0.0 and when calling apple support they tell you to reset PMU and repair the usual disk permissions, which of cause doesn' work. And there are aparently a lot of really angree costumers, because this problem makes the computer COMPLETLY unusable, but apple has done nothing to help those people because of the the fact there there has been released ZERO patches or changes in OSX to resolve this issue. I can't say that there is something wrong with the iBooks as the several hardware test's indicate no malfunctioning but there is some bug in Mac OSX wich specificly makes the system incable to tell some ibook's how to wake the harddisk from sleep mode.
To the fine folks working on this forum: No I will not send this to apple, they already know about this, and have done nothing (just think of the millions of crash reports they recieve from those hundreds of crashes everybody is geting from this problem). That is why I put this on the forum so that people can actually solve this problem by themselves. If you think it's worth sending to apple, so that this problem can finally be fixed after 4-5 years you are more than welcome to send it directly to somebody who will actually do something about this. And i really hope that giving people the opportunity to make ther computer work, doesn't violated the usual rule "that we are not allowed to write anything that is agains apples interests", wich often results in a removal of threads and ANY chance in SOLVING critical errors.
ibook g4 12", 512, 32 VRAM, 1.2 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.5)sdad sdsdds:
Your observations and solution are right on the money!!
I just was working on an iBook that my father is giving to my sister. I must have started the problem by changing the sleep setting for battery to let HD sleep. After that the fun began! Instability, restart after restart, running Disk Warrior, fixing permissions over and over, etc. I finally zeroed out the HD and installed 10.4. Nothing worked until I read your post.
Thanks a lot. I understand how you feel about posting here, but please be aware that you are helping many people who would be completely without a clue otherwise. Thanks again for your efforts.
Now I can ship my sister her iBook!
