Crash, Satellite P505D S8935

Hello Everyone,
After downloading a program and opening a e-mail, my computer starting acting strange.  I thought I had a virus, but after a full scan, no virus was found.
At the same time I was having trouble with my wireless connection, Belkin N Wireless, unable to get a wireless connection with the Belkin as my router.
After trying to find the problem for 2 days, without success I just started to hit the enter key, frustrated.
At that point, the screen went black for a few minutes, than a gray screen opened it said either fatal error or crash, and I could at least recover the factory settings from Toshiba.  Since I had no other choice I started this program.
After a total of 3 days working to recover from this and updating what seemed to be a million updates, its working, but with problems.
Its running very slow with a hesitation when ever moving the cursor or trying to move anything.
I tried to reinstall my Belkin router, but stops just at the end and tells me unable to install.  I loaded AOL from a disc, seems to be OK for right now.
Before it crashed I did a full scan and no virus was reported, but who knows.
At this point I have recovered enough, that I am writing this message on my Laptop.  But I am afraid to try to fix any of the above problems I have mentioned for fear of losing the whole thing again.
Have any suggestions, other than taking it in to be repaired, which I think I will need to do anyway.
I appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks,
Deb

Not sure what happened to you, Deb. But I would restore the hard disk to its original factory-new contents using Toshiba recovery media. That will wipe the disk clean; so be sure to copy any important files to external storage.

Open Services (services.msc). Verify that the Windows Audio and the Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services are Started. If not, come back here.
If so, can't hurt to reinstall the driver. Try them both if necessary.

When I click on a drop down menu, such as one to find properties or to copy/cut, the shadow is left on the desktop.

That's a little more than a shadow! Regardless, let's try to reload your display driver. Given what's happening, go into 'Control Panel - Programs and Features' and uninstall any ATI software you see there. Then, go into Device Manager by clicking on 'Start' and then typing in   devmgmt.msc   and click on that file. Next, click on the arrow beside 'Display adapters', then right click on the 'ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics', and click on 'Uninstall', then click 'OK' to confirm uninstall.
Then download the appropriate driver to your desktop and double click on it to install. If you are still running Vista install the Vista driver, if you are now running Windows 7, install the Win7 driver.

  • Satellite P505D-s3859 random slow down then crash

I got the laptop with Windows Vista, had this problem (along with many other Vista related ones), so I formatted and installed Windows 7 with all the drivers hoping to fix it.  Same problem.  Doesn't seem to affect Ubuntu Linux when I dual boot over into that, but my laptop reliably crashes or has to be rebooted at least once or twice a day.
The problem seems to be random, but let me describe the normal case that I'm in when it occurs.  I will be running Windows 7, multiple browsers, Yammer, Skype, dropbox, winamp and AVG.  The first, most obvious symptom is that any USB pariphials will stop working (I use a usb wireless mouse) and the sound will go into uber-slow motion mode.  At this point, everything on the laptop will be ultra slow to respond, but I can still close my apps down if I do it quickly.  If I'm not using any external usb nor listening to an audio file, and I miss the slow down event, the laptop will eventually crash.
When this happens, I ctrl-alt-del and check task manager, but I don't see anything particular using up all the resources.  I've updated everything I could with the windows 7 drivers from the toshiba site, but still have this problem.  It was affecting me with Windows Vista, and this is the second Windows 7 install I've done on this laptop, with the same symptoms.

I'm not a hardware guru, but the problem seems consistent with a flaky hard drive. It certainly has nothing to do with software. See what chkdsk c: /r has to say.
The entry in Event Viewer occurs when the processor is throttled back to save battery charge.

  • Which kind of DVD writeable discs for my P505D-S8935 Laptop? -R or +R?

Does it matter? I think the drive in my P505D-S8935 is a + and - R drive, so which type of media is best, if either? I have found the +R media slightly cheaper in cost than the -R. If both work, great.

+R discs are supposed to be slightly more compatible.
Try to avoid cheap no name brand discs, some times you get lucky and they work, but they are more prone to errors.

  • Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8935 - Memory Question

I am having a problem with several programs running in the background when I have Firefox running with about three or four tabs open.  It seems as if I don't have enough memory (I think) to run photo-editing software like Photoshop.  How can I increase memory to handle these?  This laptop appeared to be loaded with memory when I first looked at it, but now I'm thinking it can't handle what I need to do.  After re-reading the specs, it says "This elegant laptop computer out performs even the most powerful desktops, thanks to its 2.2-GHz AMD Turion Xs Dual-Core Mobil Processor RM 74 (1MB L2 Cache), 4GB of DDR2 800MHz memor (expandable to 8GB), and a huge 400GB 5400RPM SATA hard drive."
What do I need to purchase to keep my laptop from freezing, lagging videos/audio when view on different websites, inability to control my external mouse (it jumps all over the place) and to run multiple photo-editing software applications at the same time?
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Upping the ram to 8gigs will run you about $400 to $500 bucks (4gig sticks are rather expensive).  If it was me I would look into optimizing the system rather than adding more ram.  Make sure all of your drivers are up to date, run a chkdsk/r on your hard drive to make sure there are any problems there.  Clear out all of the temp files that just waste space.  Also check out BlackViper's website to see what services you can safely run without to increase performance.

  • Audio fluctuating on new Satellite P505D

Can someone tell me how to fix my speakers in my new laptop I have tried redownloading the drivers and it hasnt worked also the dolby control center was missing and I downloaded that file but it hasnt helped the speakers from sounding like the volume is going up and down all the time.

    You aren't alone.
I actually returned my first P505-S8945 to Newegg because of this issue.  I was up and down all the drivers, settings, etc, and could not get the sound to be acceptable. The fluctuatuation is mainly noticable, bady, with music.  Likewise, I tried re-installing drivers as well.  I went through the gauntlet of "tech support" with Toshiba and they basically just re-went through some of the very minor things that I had already done.  We concluded that it was a hardware issue with the speakers.  However, my replacement P505-S8945 has the same problem, although not as bad as the first one did.  I had to accept that this is a driver issue and not a hardware issue.
I have five OS's on my laptop and can offer you this:  there are no problems with the audio in Win XP and Linux.  Under Linux, you only get PCM, but it is acceptable.  Also, under Linux, when you plug your headphones into the headphone jack, the headphones work but you continue to get sound out of the speakers.  The speakers don't mute when headphones are plugged in.  Its a kernel issue that can be fixed my compiling a custom kernel.  There are references to this specific issue on the web.  Another thing on the "to do" list, wish I had discovered it earlier though and would have fixed it at the same time that I fixed the firewire isochronous "out of synch" issue.

    Hi
BSOD can be caused by software or hardware problem.
I think you should firstly check how the notebook would run with a fresh preinstalled system. For that you should use Toshiba recovery disk.
If you will still get the BSOD then you should update the graphic card driver and if necessary the BIOS.
Of course it can be related to hardware malfunction.
In most cases an RAM malfunction can cause BSOD.
So maybe it would be useful to check the memory.
You can remove one module and could try using the notebook with one module only.
You can use also an memory tool like memtest86 or similar

  • Satellite P505d-S8005

I am the frustrated, illiterate owner of the above laptop and recently started experiencing problems with the screen that remained black when I switched it on. I would have to repeatedly turn it off and on before it decided to respond. I tried for about 90 minutes using the prescribed sites on the Quick Tour sheet but to no avail. If anyone out there in the Computer "black hole" has experienced such a problem and can recommend a fix please illuminate me with your brilliance as I am at my wits end and don't even know if I need to replace my laptop. Unfortunately the manufacturer is of no assistance and that isn't surprising in this day and age. HELP!!

From your description, it sounds like your computer has a loose or bad connection that only intermittently connects. But your post leaves out a lot. Do the LEDs in the front light up? Does the hard drive spin up? Can you hear the fan? Ultimately this sounds like a hardware problem. My recommendation would be to take this to a Toshiba computer tech and get it diagnosed. It could be just a loose cable or wire causing this problem.

  • Satellite P505D-S8930 locking up

I have the same problem a dcarhvt2.  My laptop will lock up and I have to do a hard shutdown and open in Safe Mode.  My Event file is full of Critical Error messages.  What should I do?

I disabled the sleep and hibernate settings and now shut down the computer at night and have not had any other lock ups.  A power management issue?  This computer came with Vista which I replaced with 7 and it was happening on both programs.  Anyone else tried this?

  • P505D-S8930 Vista 64x Input device not found

Hello, I have used the voice regognition software on this Toshiba, then one day it came up that it could not find any input device in the Sound section of the control panel, I went to the device manager and it says I have the most up to date drivers. Yet I can hear sound, and it plays music, but the music fades up and down in volumne, and there is no microphone available anymore to input. I did a system restore back quite a bit on the dates, because I could not remember when I first noticed the error coming up, but that did not help either.
    Thanks for any help.

..could not find any input device in the Sound section of the control panel
You're missing the Sound entry in Control Panel? Or you're missing something after you open that?
If the latter, try reinstalling the driver.

  • P505D-S8930 System Freeze and USB Mouse dies windows only

    Hi,
I purchased this laptop in September and have tried several things to solve the problem so let me start at the beginning.  The hardware I love 18.4 inch display, memory, disk space, ports and Keyboard.  OS being Vista Premium 64 bit  no good.
    1.  I loaded windows 7 enterprise and love it but out of no where even just at idle the CPU's pin at 100% and any usb connect pointing device dies.  I hate touchpads.  This can happen on a cool boot, after an hour or several hours.
    2. I load Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit and all worked fine but no wireless (expected) however freeze problem gone ran 36 hours no problem.  But like many people still need to run windows.
    3.  Since some of my window apps will not run under windows 7 I said lets try windows XP 64bit.  Many windows XP drivers not available and problem returned. (not happy)
    4. Try windows XP 32 bit pretty much the same thing as 64bit.
5 New fresh install of windows 7 enterprise used the toshiba installer from support downloads.  Went smooth device manager looks happy but problem returned.
One bad thing I did however is removed the recovery partition from the hard drive.  But I do not want Vista on this laptop anyway.
The Laptop has AMD Turion X2 64 R74 processor, 4Gigs of ram, 320Gig HD, Ati HD3200 Graphics.
In the BIOS changed dynamic to low speed on the processor (no help) Also changed Esata from ACHI to Compatibility (no help)
Not sure what it is and why only windows.  If it was hardware I would expect it to happen under Ubuntu.
Love the machine would love to keep it but I use computers a lot for both my job and hobbies it must work.
Thanks ahead of time for all who can help.
