Crash when external HD is connected

I have a Western Digital 500 GB MyBook drive with a folder named "iMovie events" where all of my iMovie 08 clips are stored. There is also another folder named "iM HD" that stores three projects from iMovie 06 on this drive as well.
If I eject and disconnect the Western Digital drive, iMovie 08 will start up just fine, no problems. After it is started, if I connect the Western Digital drive, I get the spinning beach ball and a few minutes later iMovie crashes, quits and asks me to send a report to Apple.
If I mount the Western Digital drive first, and then open iMovie 08, the spinning beach ball comes up right away and after a few minutes iMovie will crash, quit and ask me to send a report to Apple.
I've searched the forum for a similar problem to no avail. Any guesses as to my problem?

Just FYI to anyone who stumbles across this thread in the future who might have a similar situation.
First, the FW ports on my Western Digital external drive crapped out and I read about people who had WD drives fail on them rather quickly. So today (black Friday) I picked up another 500 GB drive and transferred all of my video from the WD using the USB port to the new drive.
After transferring all of the video (thankfully without the WD drive dying), I trashed all of the iMovie Event cache folders and opened iMovie. Again it tried to process all the events and quit before finishing. So, I trashed all of the cache folders again and the next time, I moved half of my event folders outside the iMovie Events folder. The next time I opened iMovie, it was able to get all the way through the processing task and I could see all of the iMovie Events that I left in the folder. I closed and quit iMovie and moved all but the last three event folders back into iMovie Events folder. Re-opened iMovie and it found all the new event folders. Repeated the process one final time with the last three folders and everything is opening and loading as normal.
Now, I just need to try to find out why the iMac isn't seeing the WD on the firewire port. Hopefully I can still RMA the drive if the ports somehow were fried.
Anyhow, I hope this might help anyone who may encounter a similar situation in the future.

  • Option to disable UltraNav (touchpad + trackpoint) when external mouse is connected

I grabbed the 5/2011 drivers for UltraNav from the Lenovo site and it appears that an option 'to disable the integrated pointing devices when an external pointing device is present' does not exist, or at the very least I can't easily find it.  Please please please please tell me I'm simply being dense and this behavior is very easy to enable.
Seriously, the 5-year old Dell drivers I had with my old machine did that, and this is driving me BONKERS.
Alternatively, if what I'm doing here is feature-requesting, I'd be like 50% there if I could Fn+F8 and have an option to kill both the touchpad and the trackpoint - alas, I can disable 1 or the other BUT NOT BOTH WITH THAT OPTION.  Can I really not disable both?
    Lenovo W520, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

Even though it passed some time from first post I'm writing a solution for auto disabling UltraNav touchpad and trackpoint when external mouse is connected.
I have Lenovo L530 that doesn't have shortcut on keyboard to disable Elantech touchpad so after a driver update (from about 20 March 2013) I tried to find a solution again -now with success.
To auto disable touchpad when external mouse is connected you have to set value in registry editor here is procedure (for Windows 7 procedure for other Windows editions is similar or same):
Click Windows type in regedit and run it.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elantech\OtherSetting. (If you can't find Elantech\OtherSetting in HKEY_CURRENT_USER navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Elantech\OtherSetting.)
Find DisableWhenDetectUSBMouse double click it and change value (from 0) to 1, hit OK.
(If you don't have DisableWhenDetectUSBMouse in Elantech\OtherSetting create new DWORD with name DisableWhenDetectUSBMouse and set value to 1.)
    Restart computer.
I hope someone still find this helpful.

  • Macbook Pro crashes when External HD is plugged in

    Hi,
Was wondering if anyone else had experienced their Mac crashing when attaching an external HD or had any suggestions on how to recover the data?
When I attach the drive, the screen freezes for a second and reboots the whole machine. I then get the grey screen which says "Your computer has been restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds before starting up"
Have tried to attach the hard drive to a different Mac Book but had the same issue. Until this happened I had no other issues with the drive, it had been working perfectly.
Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Step one would be to try another cable or connection type, but since you've provided no info on the HD or enclosure, there's no way to provide a viable answer.

  • Windows 8 and Canvio Desk 3TB: System will not boot when external hdd is connected

    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Operating-Systems-e-g/HP-PAVILION-A6109N-amp-windows-8-System-w...
    Hi,
just recently upgraded to Win Pro on my HP PAVILION A6109N.  I also bought a toshiba canvio desk 3TB.  What I notice is that if I reboot my pc with the extermnal HDD connected, my system will not boot.
I have check my BIOS boot settings and the order of the boot.
I have tried disabling USB Legacy Support in the BIOS
I have reformatted the external HDD
but still my desktop will not boot if the external HDD is connected....If I disconnect the external HDD...the system will boot up ....
I am at a loss....*** scratching my head ***

Update:  The only solution for me was to format the drive as ext3 and plug it into one of my Asus RT-N66U USB ports, as most routers don’t yet recognize 3TB drives as NTFS.  It’s not much help to people who don’t have a router with this capability, and it also slows transfer rates to ~12MB/s.
Given the short length of the cable, your only other options are to have the 3TB Canvio sitting right next to you so you can unplug from a front USB port before each boot, or place it towards the rear of your desk and crawl under the desk to disconnect it from your PC prior to each boot.
It's a pity because Toshiba produce great internal HDD's, but my experience when it comes to external drives is they're simply junk.  I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing.

  • MacBook Air is getting hot when external monitor is connected - restart solves the problem

I have a two weeks old Mac Book Air 11" (128GB / 4GB / i5). Sometimes when I connect it to my external monitor, the FAN is getting loud and the MacBook becomes very warm on the surface near the "F3 button". The activity monitor says CPU is at 0-1% and there's no process that causes any CPU load (I switched to "show all processes" of course). Nevertheless something makes the Mac becoming hot. A simple restart while the external monitor is connected solves the issue completely, temperature and fan speed are instantly decreasing. Is this a issue related to the graphics driver? For me it seems the behavior is caused by the graphics processor rather than by the i5 CPU as activity monitor does not show any process causing high CPU load.
    Known issue?
    Thanks!

I was runnig into the same problem. Plugging in to the apple 23" display at work worked well, but when I plugged in my Dell 23" at home the fan started being noisy...
ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION: it seems to me that putting the air to into SLEEP MODE and back solves it as well!!
    I will confirm later on.

  • Fcpx 10.1.4 crashes when iPhone 4s is connected to iMac

When I connect my iPhone 4S running the latest iOS 8.3 is connected to my 2014 iMac 27 running Yosemite 10.10.2 Final Cut Pro X 10.1.4 crashes. If I do successfully connect the phone, FCPX crashes when I attempt to import video from the iPhone. I have never successfully imported anything from my iPhone to FCPX. It's kind of a drag to shut down FCPX to import or download video direct to the iMac HDD and then import to FCPX, but it does work. Any suggestions?

I still have the trial 10.0.3 download, but unforunately can't run it because it's expired.
There's another guy here that seems to be having similar issues importing AVCHD (same as my GH2).
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18147371#18147371
I removed the problem media and was able to continue for awhile without it on my macbook air while I was away.  Now that I'm back home on my 2009 era mac mini I have since imported more footage and encoutering the same thing on this system (also, unfortunately updated to 10.0.4).  It was at a point where it'd crash everytime it opened.  After a few times it wouldn't crash on opening, but I found that if I scrolled up through the clips in the event viewer, as soon as one particular one started to appear it would crash.  The problem clips seem to probably be higher bit rate because they have more motion like steadicam or slider in front of moving trees.
There's stuff related to AVCHD in my crash reports.  I looked inside the app package and saw this file.  I compared it to the files inside the package from the trial and it's definately been updated.  I haven't experimented yet, but I thought about trying to copy the old AVCHD plugin to the new version and see if it can handle my footage better, but I don't know what else breaks if it's expecting access to new features or something.

I've got several saved, I can post the full thing, but I know nobody likes scrolling through it all.

  • Itunes keeps crashing when I try to connect to Stores

I removed and re-installed Itunes, everything works fine but when I try to connect to stores, Itunes crashes.

it seems restoring it and then updating can be the exit.
too bad you certainly will lose all your songs and videos plus podcasts. no problem if you can copy them all back again.

  • Hi, Adobe Reader XI crashes when I try to connect to a pdf online.

Hi, Can anyone help, please? Adobe reader XI crashes when I connect to a pdf online. Pre-saved ones still read correctly. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Reader, and reset google chrome, but the problem is still there! What can I try next???

Chrome uses its own PDF viewer, not the Adobe Reader plugin; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-browser-plugin-configuration.html

  • IMovie doesn't recognize camera when external hd is connected

I can't import a movie from my camera into iMovie6 when a external hd is connected. That is,a 400gb LaCie tripple interface or a freecom classic sl hard drive400gb.
When a LaCie Mini 80gb is connected there is no problem.
When one of the above is connected with firewire iM doesn't recognize the camera at all.
When connected with usb2 it does see the camera, but only imports for about two seconds and that quits.
    Any suggestions?
    Jacqo

    Thanks Karsten.
Yes, my camera is a Canon, but not one of the models mentioned in that tech note.
    I've solved it now.
Reading your reply gave me a bright idea.
If that is true why can I import with the smaller LaCie hd connected?
Look at the type of firewire cable Jacqo.
Yes,that is a different type of cable;connected the 400g with the cable that came with the 80g hd and eureka,it works.
So it was just a matter of the right type of firewire cable.
Why didn't I think of that earlier.
    Again ,Thanks Karsten.

  • Itunes 9 crashes when ipod touch is connected

I'm having a problem with my ipod I've got ox s 10.4.11 and itunes 9.2.1 and an ipod touch third gen. 32 gb after having my ipod for a while i plugged it into my computer (a powerbook g4) and itunes crashes every time its connected, i reset my ipod and tried to restore it, which updated it to 4.1, and it will not let me restore my ipod and itunes still crashes when i plug my ipod in unless i put it into recovery mode, I've reset, and restored my ipod many times and i don't know what to do. currently my ipod is useless. and it seems that i have to buy ox s 10.5 so i can up grade to itunes 10 so i can use my ipod again...? is there any other way? to fix this?

More info: iTunes generates a standard WinXP Send Error Report/Don't Send error message.
    The Error Signature is:
    AppName: itunes.exe
    AppVer: 8.0.2.20
    ModName: quicktime.qts
    ModVer: 7.55.90.70
    Offset: 009fd1a7
I tried on another PC. Same crash. It seems either the problem is on the iPod Touch side, or some more general problem with iTunes.

  • Applications crash when external screen connected

When you connect an external screen (i.e. BENQ FP731) on a MacBook Pro 15" applications like Word (11.2) or NetBarrier X4 crash unexpectedly. Has anybody the same problem?

Problem seems to be resolved in Leopard.

  • Wifi dropping and slow when external USB hdd connected

    Hi,
I have a problem with Wifi connection in my Macbook Air 2014 running Yosemie 10.10.1. I have USB hub, which is plugged to power and I have connected external sound card, Apple keyboard and my external HDD (I used it as Time Machine) to it. Sometimes my Wifi starts dropping and internet is extremely slow, but when i unplugged external HDD, everything seems to be fine. I've tried 3 USB hubs, but still the same problem.
    Does anyone have similar problem?
    Thanks for any advice.

go into system prefs -> startup disk and select the disk with os x on it. that should solve the problem

  • Potential "crash" when external HD is on?

SO recently, I've been experiencing this "crash", where everytime I turn off the laptop (bought just recently, not even a month old), it puts me at a screen where it says something to the likes of:
"Experienced some problem, please press the power button until it turns off, then turn it back on"
Just now, I could not restart my laptop with all my USBs connected, and I thought it was very strange, since it wouldn't even allow me to do a PRAM reset. But when I took off all of the USB cables, along with the power cord, I was able to do it.
I was just wondering what's going on, since I really do NOT want to experience this again. Is this my fault, or would Mac release some kind of patch (let alone, am I in the right forum?)

Sounds like a kernel panic. Many possible causes; here's some reading:

If you just bought your MacBook, you likely have the white polycarbonate kind. This forum is technically for the aluminum unibody ones. For future reference, the right forum is here:

And for OS questions (Mac OS X 10.6.x, Snow Leopard), you can post here:

  • Error Message -6753 when External Drive/Printers Connected

I downloaded Airport Utility 5.3.2 (532.8) and am now having problems with my Airport Extreme. I have a green light and internet access, but I am no longer able to access the external drive or the 2 printers connected to the Airport (all connected USB through a hub).
When I open Airport Utility and try to update the settings or check on the status of the drive or printers, I get the -6753 Message that prompts me to check my connections. So far, I have repaired permissions, unplugged and disconnected the Airport and even reset it, but when I hook the drive and printers up, it always reverts to this situation.
Has anyone found a fix for this problem or knows how I could install an earlier version of the utility? Thanks in advance.
    Grant

You have a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store for diagnosis. It's a free service.

  • Jdeveloper Crashing When Opening MDB Database Connection

    Hello,
I created a database connection to one of the local access mdb file using jdbc-odbc connection type.
When I tried to view the tables or when I try to create a toplink connection using the same connection I created to access mdb file, my Jdeveloper is crashing.
Any what could be the reason.
    My Jdeveloper version:

Time marches forward and I have no disagreement with any of the Weblogic decisions. The reality is though that we still do not have a clear answer from Oracle (although our clients sales folks are working on it) as to whether the client will have to pay to "upgrade" their Oracle Application Server (Enterprise) licenses to get the WebLogic server necessary to run the applications created by the final Production JDeveloper11g. If it costs money then it requires budgeting and that all takes a lot of time.
We have a fairly rich application already developed and we cannot port it to Weblogic until the licensing issues are resolved. Until that happens it will have to continue to run on the OC4J container.
BUT ... I consider this "not a problem" with respect to TP4 not running on Vista 64-bit as long as the final release JDeveloper 11g does. I'll just have to work in my VPC hosted XP Client until our clients get their licensing issues sorted out with Oracle.
