Crash when opening some e-mails
I've started getting intermittent crashes in Mail (OS 10.4.6) related to certain messages. Most of the problem messages have graphical attachments. As the message starts to preview, Mail will close/crash, and the Apple crash dialog box shows up.
I've tried turning off the auto-preview pane, otherwise just opening the program may crash it -- depending if the first message is one of the "bad" ones. I've also repaired permissions, and copied back in a backup version of the app from an external firewire drive. The problem persists. I've also diabled loading images automatically, to no effect.
I'm using my .Mac account webmail as a workaround until this gets fixed.

I received your Forwarded messages. Neither message caused Mail to crash on either Mac. This is a POP account, and that is why I have asked to see the same forwarded to my .mac address, although I am not sure the experience is the same as a Forward, as for you receiving, originally.
I see nothing unusual about the UKULA message.
The frapper message is a different matter, as it has all sorts of HTML and images embedded in conjunction with links to web pages. I have sent you a screenshot of how it displays for me. The thumbnails are repeated at the bottom, but this may a product of the forwarding. It is said to have 10 attachments, but with the Slideshow button, only one is presented -- the one .gif, but none of the other nine .jpg images.
I am wondering if the crashes could be the result of a font issue, and not purely an attachment issue, since I see nothing that should cause a crash in either message. Have you modified any fonts recently, or turned any off? However, the crash as another User, could be from a font problem, as the font would be common to both users.

Mail crashes when opening some e-mail
Incoming messages all of a sudden make Mail randomly crash. We reinstalled OS 10.2.8 in hopes of clearing the problem, and this helped but did not solve it. Now Mail only crashes most of the time on messages that used make it crash all the time.
We can download and open the same e-mail from our ISP's direct access without problems.
Will a clean install of the OS produce results commensurate with the hassles?

Adobe Reader 9.x crashes when opening some pdf files that work fine with Adobe Reader 8.x
Adobe Reader 9 crashes when opening approximately 10% to 20% of the pdfs in my collection. The remaining 80% to 90% work without problems. The pdfs are launched by double-clicking the pdf file from Windows Explorer. The crashes occur with both v9.0 and v9.1. The pdfs that crash in v9.x work fine in older versions of Adobe Reader, such as v8.1.3. Furthermore, this behavior also occurs on all 3 virtual machine hosted on the same physical machine, with default Adobe Reader settings, for both v9.0 and v9.1. The virtual machines have little running in memory except standard Windows executables - i.e. they are fairly pristine. The operating systems for the virtual machines are XP SP3, XP SP2, and Windows Server 2003.

To sum up, this problem happens on both a real computer running XP SP3, and also on all 3 virtual machines hosted on the same physical computer. I tried changing the Reader setting to not use hardware rendering, to no avail. I also tried various Data Execution Prevention settings in Windows, to no avail. All operating systems, the real and virtual ones, do not have problems with other programs that I use. I also tried a second machine with Adobe Reader v9.1 and the same exact problem pdfs, and had no issues. Thus, the problem happens on only one of the computers, but on the real and 3 virtual operating systems on that machine. There were no errors reported during any of the Reader installations. The virtual machines had no prior versions of Reader prior to Reader installation.I did further testing of 10 single page pdf files which I created from a single book. All 5 pdf files with images crashed in Reader v9.1. 0 of the 5 pdf files without images crashed in Reader v9.1. Reader v8.1.4 crashes on none of the 10 pdfs. Note that the crash always occurs in jp2klib.dll, which according to the file property description is 'JPEG2000 Core Library', which deals with images. So it seems the issue is in Adobe's jp2klib.dll, in combination with the hardware/software that I have. Illustrator crashes when opening some PDFs
When opening some PDFs in Illustrator, Illustrator "Quits Unexpectedly"
It only occurs on one out of 15 of our Macs
I am running on all the latest updates both OS and Adobe
It is very intermittent
It only seems to do it across a SMB network share
If the file is copied to the desktop it works fine
If the file is outlined and accessed from the network share it works fine
If the file is moved to another folder on the same network share it seems to work fine
I have repaired all fonts and cleared all font caches
This has recently had a full clean (using adobe's clean script) and re-install of Illustrator because of updating issues, but we have other Macs which have had to go through this also.
I have a crash log also but it is too big to post here
Any ideas before I wipe the lot and start again?It is not nonsense.
A pdf is supposed to be an end-format, not to be edited. Edits should always be done in the originating application, not in Illustrator. A native AI-file is not the same thing as a pdf. Editing pdfs in Illustrator can be a recipe for disaster and damage of the file-content.
The following is from Dov Isaacs at Adobe in teh Indesign mailinglist at Lassosoft:
"Adobe Illustrator is NOT, repeat NOT, repeat yet again NOT a general
purpose PDF (or EPS) editor. It cannot fully and properly edit PDF
(or EPS) files created any than by "save as" operations from the
equivalent or later version of Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator only
"knows" about PDF constructs that it itself generates. Other PDF
constructs may be modified or deleted without notice. Furthermore,
Illustrator does NOT support mixed color-space PDF files. And finally,
Illustrator does NOT make use of any fonts embedded in a PDF file. If
you "edit" a page of a PDF file in Illustrator, you must have the
same version of the same font on the Illustrator system as you have
on the system that creates the PDF.
We constant hear of problems in prepress due to misuse of Adobe
Illustrator as a PDF fixup program. You use Illustrator at your own
risk for this purpose which is absolutely not supported by
Adobe Systems Incorporated!

7.6 Win crashes when opening some files that open on Mac
On XP SP3, I can play Apple movie previews without problem in Firefox.
I can also view certain 3rd party tutorials in quicktime in Firefox without any problems.
If I download the same files I was viewing without problem, quite often QuickTime 7.6 will crash when opening the file.
It's not a corrupt file, as if I try a few times, it will finally open.
These same files have zero problem if I open them in QT 7.6 on the Mac.
I'm running a server motherboard with ECC memory from a RAID with ECC memory, and I have NO crashes with my other software (SQL Server, Visual Studio, etc.)
How can I resolve this crashing issue?I should have mentioned, to get it to crash, I double click on the file when Quicktime is NOT running (I don't have Quicktime set to always run either).
I found that if I open Quicktime 1st, THEN I can double click on the file and have it open (the one I could not get to open at all). -
Mail crashes when opening some email
Hi all.
I'm having a problem with Mail and I don't know enough to understand the Console readout.
Basically, Mail is crashing when I open certain email's, always the same email(s) but most work fine.
It also kept crashing the other day when I tried to view the Junk Mail folder, the only way around that was to delete all junk mail from the menubar.
Is anyone able to help?

Message was edited by: Glyn SealHmm. It didn't crash in Safe Mode and now it is working fine normally as well.
Well the only email I hadn't deleted now opens without crashing Mail, although it isn't displaying properly.
And the other problem I had been having (didn't think to mention before) where some emails would display in a really odd font has also fixed since the restart in Safe Mode.
Thanks heaps for that.... I feel like such a newbie with troubleshooting in Mac OS X, sometimes I should remember old tips from when I used to service old Macs!

InDesign CS5.5 crashing when opening some files
I have been trying solutions posted for a week and haven't found one that works. Would appreciate any help anyone has.
A single page InDesign file will makes it to the window where it is attempting to load fonts, then crashes. However, file will open on a different comuter running same software, same versions and updates.
I removed all fonts from the document and it will open, which seems to point to a font problem. Odd thing is, other documents can be opened that are using the same fonts.
Have tried:
Upgrading to os 10.8
Running ID icons update
Removing and re-installing fonts
Removing and re-installing font manager software (font agent pro v4)
Restarting InDesign and trashing prefs
Running smasher
Running font nuke
Reparing permissions on computer
Removing SING files
And probably a few other things
This issue is affecting some but not all computers in a 30 computer environment.
All computers are on the same os version (10.7.4) , same InDesign version (5.5), some are using Font Agent 4 and some are on 5.

Photoshop CS crashes when opening some files
Occasionally, I run into an image file where Photoshop CS "unexpectedly quits" when I try to open that file. What could be causing this? I load the file from a CD, composed of images I've scanned and burned on the CD. Only one or two files (so far) have caused this problem. Can anyone explain what's going on? I work with files of around 250 MB. But, I close all other apps to free up max memory. No problem with the majority of my files. All these files are in TIFF format. Any ideas?
My Safari also "unexpectedly quits" when accessing a particular Website, but in another topic, I've learned that's a Web issue & I don't think that these "unexpected quits" are related. It's weird that both problems turned up, today.Hi, David. Does the unexpected PS quit occur only when you open the affected file(s) directly from a CD, or does it still happen if you copy the same file from the CD to a hard drive before opening it? In the latter case, I would guess the copied file is corrupt, perhaps because of an error in reading it from the CD. Have you inspected the CD(s) very carefully for fingerprints, surface damage or data layer defects (pinholes)? Are you using high-quality CD-R media? Is your optical drive clean?
Is there plenty of available space (at least 5GB, preferably 10GB) on your startup volume? Is that the volume you've designated as the scratch disk for PS, or are you using space on another volume as the scratch disk? -
IPhoto 11 crashes when opening some thumbnail in viewer

I'm using an iMac 27" 2011 with Lion. Photo 11 worked fine until suddenly some photo's can be opened by clicking on the thumbnails anymore. However, these files can be pre-viewed in the OS-x viewer.
I've moved the programme to the bin and downloaded/reinstalled iPhoto, no effect.
I've downloaded and used the latest photo manager and tried to create an new library, however this software uses Photo 11 for creating and importing to an new lib.
The corrupt files can be opened on a Windows machine.
Will it help to upgrade to Aperture 3?

SjoerdTry this: launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If the problem is not experienced in the test library your library is damages.
If that's the case make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Numbers 3 crashes when opening some previous version files
I upgraded to Mavericks and Numbers 3 a week or so ago. Most of my old numbers spreadsheets open fine. A few do not. I tried the restore standard fonts fix, but that didn't work. The files that are not opening are large, with lots of charts. Is there any way I can reinstall or revert back to the earlier version of Numbers, or preferably run both versions at the same time? I could then clean up the file and see if I can get it to load in the new version.

Mail crashes when opening mail with attachments (10.5.6 problem?)
Hello, and thanks in advance.
My Mail program is crashing when opening email that is "larger" in size or has attachments embedded in the messages. I think this problem began only after I installed the 10.5.6 update. I don't have any third party plug ins, and I ran Mail Update 10.5.6 without improvement.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can fix this?

Yours indicates thread 25 crashed and it's all about Helium so you can try searching the Motion forum for HELIUM and you can even use Google to search for some of those text strings. There are some people out there who try to decode Apple's useless and insanely unfriendly crash reporting syntax.
How many graphics cards do you have in your machine?
Do you perhaps have any CMYK graphics in the project?

Adobe Acrobat pro 9.4.6 crashes when opening multiple files simultaneously.
We have Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 which has been updated to version 9.4.6. we had this problem when the 9.4.5 update was applied also. It is now crashing when we try to open multiple files simultaneously.
Yesterday, I narrowed down the problem to 6 plugins:
IA32
ADBC
eBook
EScript
HLS
PPKLite
SaveAsRTS
However, we discovered that that Comments and markup tool bars weren't loading. So I did a repair install on it.
Now those plugins from yesterday work and Acroform.api is causing it to crash when opening multiple files.
I did try other suggestion that involved using Icacls/cacls on dll files to no avail.
It is running on XP SP3 fully updated with plenty of RAM and HDD space.
Is there a way to fix this without reinstalling?I am not sure what's causing this problem on your machine because everything's working fine for me.
What is the version of Acroform.api on your machine now.
Do a Repair after deleting this file and see if it works.
Enable Windows MSI logging (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314852) before you do a repair, upload that log to some file sharing server, and paste its link here. -
Acrobat 11.01.10 Mac OS 10.8.5 Crashes when opening preferences or making annotations
I noticed my MacBook Air (2 GHz Intel Core i7 8 GB Memory) was opening Acrobat Pro 8 rather than Acrobat Pro 11 -- I had installed the latter but at some point had starting defaulting to the former.
So I deleted Acrobat Pro 8 and began using just XI. I'm using the latest update: Acrobat Pro 11.01.10
I lost my custom tools, so I recreated them after trying to restore them from Time Machine.
Anyway, the program runs fine for a bit, then crashes. It will crash when using some annotation tools, always when trying to enter a text comment or copy and paste one. Another predictable way to make it crash is to try and open Preferences.
I am still using Mac OS 10.8.5. I will upgrade the Mac OS as soon as some problems with other programs I use are resolved so I can upgrade.
According to the release notes, Acrobat 11 should run fine on this and later versions of Mac OS.

Can anyone suggest any help getting Acrobat Pro XI not to crash? I'm tempted to delete and reinstall the program but I downloaded it, I believe, so I will need to figure out how to do that. I normally order a backup CD but I'm not sure those exist anymore.

P.S. I tried updating Adobe Applications Manager, which led me to sign into a free Creative Cloud membership. I have signed out of it, as suggested in another post.
I have also observed that I can copy a text box. The program only crashes when I try and type any character in the text box.The solution was to remove all versions of Acrobat Pro and reinstall Acrobat Pro XI. I still had the download file in my Time Machine backup. That's a good thing, since the download link from the order listing on the Adobe website under my account would not work.
The problems don't occur with version 11.0.0. I got the work done, now I'm updating to 11.1.0 and will report if they came back. -
Photoshop 5.1 strange crashes when opening files
Hi there
I'd be grateful for any help with the following scenario:
I'm using Win 7 64bit, and have run Photoshop 64bit CS4 without issue since first owning the computer (2 years or so), along with the rest of CS4 Productions Studio etc; I've now upgraded to CS5.5 Production Studio
Now using Photoshop 5.1 64bit, I'm having trouble with Photoshop crashing when opening certain files - I get the 'Photoshop has stopped responding' windows message.
The problem is intermittent - but when it happens, re-oppening Photoshop and then trying to open the same file causes Photoshop to crash again, in the same way, over and over. The workaround seems to be that if you open several files at once, including the one that Photoshop crashed while openig, the files load ok - but this doesn't always work.
I've disabled openGL drawing in Photoshop, I have no 3rd party plugins installed, I've turned off all scratch disks except the C: drive, and I've tried loading the files from different hard drives, without effect. Once openned, I've re-saved the files in different loactions wih different names, to no effect.
I've also had a 'DDE Server Window:Photoshop.exe Application Error message a couple of times when closing Photoshop
There was also a day a couple of weeks back when workig on a particular file that contained a complex text layout, Photoshop 5.1 would repeatedly crash when trying to use the type tool - I have used a 'font fixer' program to check the fidelity of my fonts, and they're fine
Overall, given the amount I've actually used 5.1 since I installed it, it seems very unstable - not what I've come to expect from Photoshop at all (I've been using it since version 3.0)
If anyone could shed some light on any of this, and how I might get Photoshop stable like CS4 was, that would be really great, otherwise I'm going to have to step back a version

JonA good possibility is that the latest version of Photoshop is demanding things of your display driver that it hasn't been asked to do before. Display driver updates do solve a LOT of issues... I suggest you visit the web site of the maker of your video card and see if they offer an updated display driver you can download and install.
Your mention of the type tool issues implies a possibly corrupted or badly formed font. Chris Cox just the other day shared a neat link to a handy font troubleshooting page... http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/843/cpsid_84363.html
Lastly, it never hurts to set all Photoshop preferences back to defaults and then reconfigure only the things you know you need to change... Do this by pressing and holding Control - Shift - Alt when cold-starting Photoshop. You have to be very quick, and if you're quick enough Photoshop will prompt you to confirm the deletion of the current preferences.

P.S., At the moment, on my system Photoshop CS5 seems very stable. I had some periods of instability, and display driver updates from ATI seem to have solved that completely. Currently I'm using Catalyst 11.9, which may be interesting to you if you're using an ATI card.
