Crash when opening tools or comments pane.
I have a mac OS X 10.8.3 and adobe reader 11.0.02 and when I open a file and try to use the tools or comments pane, Adobe Reader crashes!
Any solution?
photocompany,
One thing often tried first is to create a new document and File>Place the corrupted one to see how much may be rescued that way (remember to tick Paste remembers Layers in the Layer palette flyout/dropdown first, and to untick it afterwards).
Here is a website where you can see whether it can rescue the file, and if it can, you may pay for a subscription to have it done,
http://www.recoverytoolbox.com/buy_illustrator.html
and another similar website,
http://markzware.com/adobe-software/fix-illustrator-file-unknown-error-occurred-pdf2dtp-fi le-recovery/
As far as I remember, the former is for Win and the latter for Mac.
Here are a few pages about struggling with it yourself:

Crashes when accessing copy from Comments pane
Using Acrobat 11.0 on a Mac laptop running OSX 10.9.4, when I try to copy text in the Comments pane, it crashes. I just upgraded from previous operating system thinking this was the problem, but it still occurs. I see that on my desktop, my version of Acrobat is 11.0.7, and when I see if there is an update on Creative Cloud for this laptop, it says my Acrobat is up to date. Not sure if this might be the problem.
You should check OS X logs and Windows client logs to have a better understanding of what happened.

Adobe Acrobat pro 9.4.6 crashes when opening multiple files simultaneously.
We have Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 which has been updated to version 9.4.6. we had this problem when the 9.4.5 update was applied also. It is now crashing when we try to open multiple files simultaneously.
Yesterday, I narrowed down the problem to 6 plugins:
IA32
ADBC
eBook
EScript
HLS
PPKLite
SaveAsRTS
However, we discovered that that Comments and markup tool bars weren't loading. So I did a repair install on it.
Now those plugins from yesterday work and Acroform.api is causing it to crash when opening multiple files.
I did try other suggestion that involved using Icacls/cacls on dll files to no avail.
It is running on XP SP3 fully updated with plenty of RAM and HDD space.
Is there a way to fix this without reinstalling?I am not sure what's causing this problem on your machine because everything's working fine for me.
What is the version of Acroform.api on your machine now.
Do a Repair after deleting this file and see if it works.
Enable Windows MSI logging (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314852) before you do a repair, upload that log to some file sharing server, and paste its link here. -
Finder crash when opening any Folder
I am a very experienced mac user and this one has me stumped. Im posting here to see if anyone else has this problem.
Finder crashes when opening a folder on the desktop
Finder crashes when using any option from the Go menu (or key combo) except Airdrop.
Once Finder window is open on Airdrop any navigation to home folder or any other folder using side bar causes Finder to crash.
Using Go To Folder causes crash, even on hidden folder like /var
Finder is OK when opening files on desktop
All other apps can browse file system and open/save OK
Google Drive is not present on system (this used to be an issue a long time a go that caused similar symptoms in other threads)
Drop Box is installed. But issue occurs even when dropbox is not running
Using spotlight to open applications still works normally.
Clicking the Finder icon in the Dock results in a non-functional blank window entitled "Window", all tool buttons are disabled.
Repeatedly opening the same folder over and over results in the message "The last time you open Finder, it unexpectedly quite while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again? If you choose not to reopen windows, you may have to open and position the windows yourself" Two options "Don't Reopen" and "Reopen". Both buttons have no effect except to dismiss the dialog.
Steps Taken to fix:
Booted into recovery mode and performed repair disk and Permissions - Finder Still Crashes
Removed finder preference files using terminal
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Recent changes to system:
iTunes 11.4 Installed with normal Software Update.
Possible Cause of Problem
Found app in iTunes that has File Sharing enabled and has a shared folder. Curious as to what was in the folder i dragged it to my desktop and double clicked. Im not sure if iTunes would have had enough time to copy the contents of the folder before i tried to open the folder. Finder crashed. This was the first time it happened.
iPhone app in iTunes that I picked in was "Ubersense".1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Photoshop 5.1 strange crashes when opening files
Hi there
I'd be grateful for any help with the following scenario:
I'm using Win 7 64bit, and have run Photoshop 64bit CS4 without issue since first owning the computer (2 years or so), along with the rest of CS4 Productions Studio etc; I've now upgraded to CS5.5 Production Studio
Now using Photoshop 5.1 64bit, I'm having trouble with Photoshop crashing when opening certain files - I get the 'Photoshop has stopped responding' windows message.
The problem is intermittent - but when it happens, re-oppening Photoshop and then trying to open the same file causes Photoshop to crash again, in the same way, over and over. The workaround seems to be that if you open several files at once, including the one that Photoshop crashed while openig, the files load ok - but this doesn't always work.
I've disabled openGL drawing in Photoshop, I have no 3rd party plugins installed, I've turned off all scratch disks except the C: drive, and I've tried loading the files from different hard drives, without effect. Once openned, I've re-saved the files in different loactions wih different names, to no effect.
I've also had a 'DDE Server Window:Photoshop.exe Application Error message a couple of times when closing Photoshop
There was also a day a couple of weeks back when workig on a particular file that contained a complex text layout, Photoshop 5.1 would repeatedly crash when trying to use the type tool - I have used a 'font fixer' program to check the fidelity of my fonts, and they're fine
Overall, given the amount I've actually used 5.1 since I installed it, it seems very unstable - not what I've come to expect from Photoshop at all (I've been using it since version 3.0)
If anyone could shed some light on any of this, and how I might get Photoshop stable like CS4 was, that would be really great, otherwise I'm going to have to step back a version
Thanks
JonA good possibility is that the latest version of Photoshop is demanding things of your display driver that it hasn't been asked to do before. Display driver updates do solve a LOT of issues... I suggest you visit the web site of the maker of your video card and see if they offer an updated display driver you can download and install.
Your mention of the type tool issues implies a possibly corrupted or badly formed font. Chris Cox just the other day shared a neat link to a handy font troubleshooting page... http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/843/cpsid_84363.html
Lastly, it never hurts to set all Photoshop preferences back to defaults and then reconfigure only the things you know you need to change... Do this by pressing and holding Control - Shift - Alt when cold-starting Photoshop. You have to be very quick, and if you're quick enough Photoshop will prompt you to confirm the deletion of the current preferences.
Good luck!
-Noel
P.S., At the moment, on my system Photoshop CS5 seems very stable. I had some periods of instability, and display driver updates from ATI seem to have solved that completely. Currently I'm using Catalyst 11.9, which may be interesting to you if you're using an ATI card. -
Adobe Reader 9 crashes when opening approximately 10% to 20% of the pdfs in my collection. The remaining 80% to 90% work without problems. The pdfs are launched by double-clicking the pdf file from Windows Explorer. The crashes occur with both v9.0 and v9.1. The pdfs that crash in v9.x work fine in older versions of Adobe Reader, such as v8.1.3. Furthermore, this behavior also occurs on all 3 virtual machine hosted on the same physical machine, with default Adobe Reader settings, for both v9.0 and v9.1. The virtual machines have little running in memory except standard Windows executables - i.e. they are fairly pristine. The operating systems for the virtual machines are XP SP3, XP SP2, and Windows Server 2003.
Error message info in all cases:
app=acrord32.exe
app version=9.1.0.163
module=jp2klib.dll
module version=2.0.0.2579
offset=0003277d
Operating system for real computer: XP SP3
CPU: 1333 MHz Athlon single core
RAM: 1 GB
To sum up, this problem happens on both a real computer running XP SP3, and also on all 3 virtual machines hosted on the same physical computer. I tried changing the Reader setting to not use hardware rendering, to no avail. I also tried various Data Execution Prevention settings in Windows, to no avail. All operating systems, the real and virtual ones, do not have problems with other programs that I use. I also tried a second machine with Adobe Reader v9.1 and the same exact problem pdfs, and had no issues. Thus, the problem happens on only one of the computers, but on the real and 3 virtual operating systems on that machine. There were no errors reported during any of the Reader installations. The virtual machines had no prior versions of Reader prior to Reader installation.I did further testing of 10 single page pdf files which I created from a single book. All 5 pdf files with images crashed in Reader v9.1. 0 of the 5 pdf files without images crashed in Reader v9.1. Reader v8.1.4 crashes on none of the 10 pdfs. Note that the crash always occurs in jp2klib.dll, which according to the file property description is 'JPEG2000 Core Library', which deals with images. So it seems the issue is in Adobe's jp2klib.dll, in combination with the hardware/software that I have. I used Microsoft's DirectX Diagnostic Tool to test DirectX, including visual tests of DirectDraw and Direct3D - everything worked as expected with no issues detected.<br /><br />Some information about my hardware:<br />Display drivers=Nvidia v84.21<br />Video card=GeForce FX 5200 with 128 MB RAM<br />CPU=AMD Athlon (single core)<br />System RAM=1024 MB in 3 DIMMs<br /><br />Further information about my hardware: (from the program System Information for Windows)<br /><br />Motherboard:<br />Manufacturer=ASUSTeK Computer INC.<br />Model=<A7V133><br />Version=REV 1.xx<br />Chipset Vendor=VIA Technologies Inc<br />Chipset Model=VT8363/5 KT133/KM133 System Controller<br />South Bridge=82C686B PCI to ISA Bridge<br />CPU=AMD Athlon<br />Cpu Socket=Slot A / Socket A [SOCKET A]<br />System Slots=5 PCI, 1 AGP<br />OnBoard devices=<unknown> (Disabled) Promise PDC20265<br /> <br />Memory Summary:<br />Location=System board or motherboard<br />Maximum Capacity=1536 MBytes<br />Memory Slots=3<br />Error Correction=None<br />Use=System memory<br /><br />CPU Info:<br />Number of CPU(s)=One Physical Processor / One Core / One Logical Processor<br />Vendor=AuthenticAMD<br />CPU Full Name=AMD Athlon<br />CPU Name=AMD Athlon(tm) Processor<br />CPU Code Name=Thunderbird<br />Technology=0.18µ<br />Platform Name=Slot A / Socket A<br />Type=Original OEM processor<br />FSB Mode=DDR<br />Type ID=0<br />CPU Clock=1323.68<br />L2 Cache Speed=1323.68 MHz<br />L2 Cache Speed=Full<br />CPU Family / Model / Stepping=6 / 4 / 4<br />L1 I-Cache=64 KB<br />L1 D-Cache=64 KB<br />L2 Cache=256 KB<br />RDMSR=00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000<br />MMX=Yes<br />MMX+=Yes<br />SSE=No<br />SSE2=No<br />SSE3=No<br />SSE4A=No<br />3DNow!=Yes<br />3DNow!+=Yes<br />DualCore=No<br />HyperThreading=No<br />AMD64=No<br />NX=No<br />VT=No<br />PowerNow!=No<br />LongHaul=No<br />LongRun=No<br />Architecture=x86<br /><br />Video:<br />AdapterCompatibility=NVIDIA<br />AdapterDACType=Integrated RAMDAC<br />AdapterRAM=128 MBytes<br />Availability=3<br />Caption=NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200<br />ConfigManagerErrorCode=0<br />ConfigManagerUserConfig=false<br />CurrentBitsPerPixel=32<br />CurrentHorizontalResolution=1280<br />CurrentNumberOfColors=4294967296<br />CurrentNumberOfColumns=0<br />CurrentNumberOfRows=0<br />CurrentRefreshRate=60<br />CurrentScanMode=4<br />CurrentVerticalResolution=1024<br />Description=NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200<br />DeviceID=VideoController1<br />DeviceSpecificPens=-1<br />DriverDate=20060309212900.000000-000<br />DriverVersion=6.14.10.8421<br />InfFilename=oem6.inf<br />InfSection=nv4_NV3x<br />InstalledDisplayDrivers=nv4_disp.dll<br />MaxRefreshRate=75<br />MinRefreshRate=60<br />Monochrome=false<br />Name=NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200<br />NumberOfColorPlanes=1<br />PNPDeviceID=PCI\VEN_10DEDEV_0322SUBSYS_91101462REV_A1\49AEDED500008<br />Status=OK<br />VideoArchitecture=5<br />VideoMemoryType=2<br />VideoModeDescription=1280 x 1024 x 4294967296 colors<br />VideoProcessor=GeForce FX 5200<br />BitsPerPel=32<br />DeviceName=NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200<br />DisplayFlags=0<br />DisplayFrequency=60<br />LogPixels=96<br />PelsHeight=1024<br />PelsWidth=1280<br />SettingID=NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200<br />SpecificationVersion=1025<br />BitsPerPixel=32<br />ColorPlanes=1<br />DeviceEntriesInAColorTable=-1<br />HorizontalResolution=1280<br />RefreshRate=60<br />VerticalResolution=1024<br />VideoMode=1280 by 1024 pixels, True Color, 60 Hertz<br />Video Bios Version=Version 4.34.20.22.00 <br />Video Bios Date=04/28/03<br />Name=GeForce FX 5200<br />Chip Type=GeForce FX 5200<br />DAC Type=Integrated RAMDAC<br />Memory=128 MBytes<br /><br />BIOS:<br />BIOS Version=ASUS - 30303031, Award Medallion BIOS v6.0, Award Plug and Play BIOS Extension v1.0A, Award Modular BIOS v6.0<br />BIOS Date=04/23/02<br />BIOS Web Page=http://www.award.com<br />BIOS Vendor=Award Software, Inc.<br />Version=ASUS A7V-133 ACPI BIOS Revision 1009<br />Release=04/23/2002<br />BIOS Size=256 KB<br /><br />Memory:<br />Location=System board or motherboard<br />Maximum Capacity=1536 MBytes<br />Memory Slots=3<br />Error Correction=None<br />Use=System memory<br />Maximum Memory Module Size=1024 MBytes<br />Device Set=DIMM 1<br />Device Locator=DIMM 1<br />Capacity=256 MBytes<br />Memory Type=Synchronous DRAM<br />Data Width=64 bits<br />Form Factor=DIMM<br />Total Width=72 bits<br />Device Locator=DIMM 2<br />Capacity=256 MBytes<br />Memory Type=Synchronous DRAM<br />Data Width=64 bits<br />Form Factor=DIMM<br />Total Width=72 bits<br />Device Locator=DIMM 3<br />Capacity=512 MBytes<br />Memory Type=Synchronous DRAM<br />Data Width=64 bits<br />Form Factor=DIMM<br />Total Width=72 bits

Ae crashing when opening project
Since of yesterday AE started crashing when opening a project which i worked on a few weeks ago.
We opened it on a PC, saved, with a new name. and it would open just fine. When reconnecting the files (AI-drawing) it crashed again. Renamed the drawing and replaced the originals with the new ones, layer by layer. Everything worked ok.
Just now, same thing, can't open any of the versions of the project. And it gives a warning saying that it crashed when opening windows. Do you want to open those windows again? Some versions of the project, i can open when clicking no. other crash anyway. What the heck is going on?
Others open fine, but this not. It involves some puppet tools scripts that i bought from aescripts...
I'm running a new Mac Pro, with the latest version of Mavericks, and latest version of AE.
tried to open with preview off, tried trashing the prefs etc. nothing seems to help.

Switched to another hardrive at some point, though. But no software updates.
Hid the ai-files, and opened up the project. Worked fine.
Replaced the ai-layers with an jpeg. Seems to work.
But, did the same thing a few days ago already. Opened up the project without the original ai-file.
Renamed the ai-file and replaced all the layers with the layers from the new one.
Worked well for a day or two, then started crashing again. -
Acrobat 8 Standard crashes when opening PDFs created from Microsoft Project 2007
Issue: Acrobat 8 Standard crashes when opening PDFs created from Microsoft Project 2007.
OS: Win XP Pro SP3
Error Message(s): None
Details: This issue happens with multiple Microsoft Project files (including new files), multiple PDF creators (included Acrobat 8 Standard) and on multiple computers. We also tried opening the PDFs in Adobe Reader 8 instead of Acrobat Standard 8. There is no record in the event log on the computers of the application crashes.I may have a resolution now...
I clicked Tools -> Options -> View and turned off Bars and shapes in Gantt views in 3-D" on the advice of someone on a Microsoft Forum. I made three PDFs from three Microsoft Project files (that were having trouble previously) and was not able to get these PDFs to crash when zooming or changing pages. So far so good!

How do I get Firefox to stop crashing when opening?
I've been using Firefox for years but now it keeps crashing when opening and all I get is the Crash Report Dialog Box. I'm using version 3.6.12. Downloading it again does not help. Most important is getting back in to save my bookmarks. Some of the FAQ's mentioned creating a a new profile to get around the crash problem, but doesn't that mean Firefox has to be running to get to the Profile Manager?
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
Firefox doesn't need to be running to access the Profile Manager to create a new profile.<br />
So if you didn't manage to start Firefox in Safe mode then you can try the other suggestions in these articles.
* [[Firefox crashes]]

Firefox crashes when opening "Extras Add-ons"
Firefox crashes when opening "Extras>Add-ons" (German user interface - I don't know what the according menu points are labeled in English).
The crash seems to be so severe that no crash ID is created. On every restart after a crash Firefox 4 is in offline mode and has to be switched back to online mode. If needed I could provide a screenshot of the error message shown when firefox crashes.
There were no problems on this machine running firefox 3.xx. The problems occurred after upgrading from firefox 3.6x to firefox 4.Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).<br />
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]<br />
<br />
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.<br />
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.<br />
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") -
PSE 6 on Mac Book Pro Crashes when opening a picture
Whenever I try to open a picture PSE crashes. This is similar to another post but I should not be having RAM or generation issues. I have removed and downloaded from different DMGs all to no avail. Please advise.
ThanksThanks for the comment but I wasn't asking about viruses. The thread I asked on solved the other user's issue because of the Norton incompatibility. I was referring to the original question which had nothing to do with viruses. I open elements and try to open a picture from iphoto to work on and elements quits. Since I don't have Norton or any other anti virus program, I was hoping there was another explanation which would apply to my situation. Any ideas?

Subject: PSE 6 on Mac Book Pro Crashes when opening a picture
There's really no need for Norton on the Mac - because there is no such thing as a Mac virus. I realize that this could change tomorrow, but as of today, there is no such thing as a Mac virus. There hasn't been for about a decade.
You can remove Norton. I removed it from my Macs about a decade ago.
To prevent any future viruses from getting in, set up a new sub-user account on your Mac, and start using it. Don't run your Mac as the Administrator.
When you run as a lowly user, your Mac keeps an eye over what you do, and demands the Administrator's name and password whenever you do something suspicious. That won't be a problem 99.9% of the time. It's only a problem when you try to install an application or a utility.
Keep that limitation in mind, and use it to your advantage. A virus is an application that pretends to be something else. It lures you into installing that virus onto your computer. Let's say in the future you download what you think is a photo. It's really a virus. You double-click on it to launch Photoshop Elements. Instead, you launch the virus, which starts to install itself on your Mac.
At that point, everything comes to a screeching halt when the Mac operating system stops the installation, and puts a message on the screen. That message will say something like, "Please type the Administrator's name and password to INSTALL THIS APPLICATION into the Applications Folder." That is your tipoff that you aren't dealing with a photo. You are dealing with an application.
At this point, you should ask yourself, "Why is a photo trying to install anything?" Whenever the Mac operating system asks for the Administrator's name and password, you should ask yourself if you know exactly what is being installed.
If you were running your Mac as the Administrator, then you wouldn't get this warning messages. The Mac would say, "Well, I guess he knows what he's doing, so I'll install this application." And the still-to-be-written virus would be installed on your Mac. It's a lot easier to keep viruses off your computer than to try to remove them once they get in.
This is why you don't need anti-virus software on the Mac - if you have an intelligent user operating the computer as a sub-user.

Premiere Pro & Premiere Elements Crash When Open Together?
Anyone have a problem with Premiere Pro & Premiere Elements crashing when open together?
I have PE10 and am doing a trial of Premiere Pro CS6.
Both crash fairly quickly when open together.
i7 2600K
Windows 7 64 Bit
16GB RAM
GTX 470
Corsair AT 850 Watt PSU
Thanks! The first thiing that comes to my mind is a resources issue. As you have a stout computer, with more than adequate RAM, unless something is failing (like a stick of RAM), or perhaps the GPU, I would not expect to see what you observe. On a much less powerful machine, I have no problem running PrPro, Encore, Photoshop, Illustrator, and a word processor, all at the same time.
I would look into this ARTICLE, which starts with some general tips on setting up one's computer for running PrE, and then goes into system and OS tune-up tips (this is probably where I would start, if the intitial checklist looks OK), and then goes into troubleshooting. I would definitely look here, and especially using Event Viewer to try and track down what is happening, when the crashes occur, and also the one on tools to test RAM, GPU's, etc.).
Good luck,

Dreamweaver 12.0.1 Crashes when Opening Complex HTML5
I'm getting a consistent crash when opening HTML5 documents with the latest general release and patched version of Dreamweaver.
I open a document, switch to the split code and design view... bam. Immediate crash.
If I'm in Code view, it's fine. Switch to design and it crashes.
Any ideas?
