Crash when power supply is removed

During the last week my computer has been doing something really weird. Sometimes when I disconnect the power supply, my computer will freeze up/get into the window that tels you that you need to restart the computer. I installed a new hard drive about 2 months ago and a new airport card like 2-3 weeks ago so that most likely is not the problem. The problem occurs wether or not I have charge left on my computer.

Hi Pedro,
The first point of call for strange power related problems (or any problem really is to reset the PMU, following the instructions on this page - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
Regarding your other comments, regardless of your skill level (and to consider doing a hard drive swap in a 12 inch powerbook, you obviously have a fair bit) you may find that in re-assembly a cable has shorted somewhere or is not plugged in tightly, or something of that nature, so I would not immediately rule that out as a cause.

  • Satellite Pro S300L-105 - Whistle when power supply is removed

I recently bought a Satellite Pro S300L-105, it works normally except that it produces a slight, pointed whistle, witch can be heard when the power supply is removed. After less than 10 minutes using, I feel pain to my ears and brain and it becomes unusable.
I do not have any hearing problem or so. and I've never had such a problem when using any other computer.
What is it due to, and what can the manufacturer do for me?

    Hi
Very common problem with all sorts of electronic equipment.
The whistle is caused by the high frequencies used by switch mode power supplies. It's a bit like a car where you have a rattle that happens only at certain speeds, and that speed creates a certain frequency that resonates with something in the car that then makes a noise. The same thing happens in the power supply.
When you remove the power the laptop enters a different power mode and starts running things on a lower voltage to save the battery power, and the way the power supply does this is by changing the frequency the power supply runs at. This frequency is just right to cause something to start vibrating within it, and as the frequencies are very high, you get a high frequency squeal. It may be so high in frequency other people can't hear it, which can be a problem when support or the shop are checking are it if you take it back.
Just like a car with a rattle, not every car of the same type will have the problem and the same goes for laptops. Someone may have a squeal only when on mains power for example, or only when the back light is on full or on dim, or they just don't notice it.
The manufacturers do a lot to try and dampen down anything that might vibrate and squeal but are not always successful.
You might find turning off power management settings help as the power supply is then forced to supply more power and so the frequency shifts to one that doesn't cause a squeal, but then you will find battery power doesn't last as long.
It could easily go away after a few weeks or months and never come back, or could get worse.
Mostly the noise isn't any sign of an impending problem or breakdown.
Getting the laptop replaced will most likely get you one that doesn't squeal.
Hope that information helps a bit, I know it can drive you mad when you get a high frequency squeal, and even madder when other people can't hear as their hearing isn't as good.
The same sorts of noise are now used in areas where children hang out causing trouble, a high frequency noise is blasted out at a frequency that most adults can no longer hear but children can as it drives them insane, so if you can here the squeal and others can't that is quite normal and shows if anything you have younger hearing or are indeed younger.

  • MacBook Pro crash when power cord is removed

When the power cord is disconnected the computer shuts off within about 0 to 15 minutes.
The log files do not show any fatal errors that have caused the crashes.
the only error that keeps repeating is: com.apple.launchd: (com.apple.launchd.peruser.32710[614]) getpwuid("32710") failed
However, i do not believe this would cause the crashes.
    Any ideas?

  • Incredibly slow performance in NetBeans 4.0 when power supply is removed

I have a Dell Latitude D810 laptop running at 1.7 GHz with 1 Gig of RAM. NetBeans 4.0 runs just fine when the laptop is plugged in. When running off of the battery, NetBeans 4.0 slows to an unbelievably slow speed. It takes 10 seconds for a menu to be displayed, for example. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to correct it? Dell tecnical support claims it is a software issue.
    Sincerely,
    Scott McCormick

Sounds to me like the machine shifts the CPU to a lower speed to save power.
Most applications won't notice much difference as they spend most of their time waiting for the user but Netbeans (among others) is rather heavy and suffers as a result.
I fear the only solutions are to keep plugged in (which may be impractical) or to keep a lightweight editor as a backup for when you must use battery power.

  • HELP!! my computer shuts down at random ONLY when power supply is attached

I still have the factory power supply. My problem just happens when ever it feels like it. I could be watching something on Quicktime or have Adium running. I have had it happen to me regardless if it was being used a little or a lot. But It ONLY happens when my power supply is attached. If I plug in my power supply to charge my computer it will shut off. I have read some other posts pointing to the problem being the logic board and that a few of the iBook G4's are subject. If this is a common problem with this computer model I think Apple should recall them and fix the problem. Any insight will be great.

Alright everyone it has been a week since I replaced my DC board and no problems. But we all know how Murphy's law works BUT I'm calling this one fixed. Thanks for your suggestions and help

  • T540p disconnect when power supply moves

My laptop becomes disconnected when my power supply is jiggled. This causes the laptop to dim and sometimes go into airplane mode. I was wondering if anyone has a similar problem and how they resolved it.
Is it the external power supply or the internal power connector? I don't want to order parts just to find out that I got the wrong one.
    Model: 20BE004EUS
Power Supply Adapter: FRU PN 45N0264

This happens specifically when I move the plug that is connected to the jack from side to side, so I suspect it is the internal hardware of the laptop.
This looks to be the error:
    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T540p-Intermittent-power-supply-connector/...
It's not a big issue, and I can live with this occasional hiccup since I'm usually stationary when it is plugged in. It has not caused my significant problems, and if it is not a known serious issue, I want to avoid being separated from my device because I would have to get a technician fix this for me because it involves invasive disassembly.
Is there any danger in keeping this faulty hardware? Could having the faulty hardware limit the lifespan of my laptop significantly compared to having the faulty hardware swapped?

  • Satellite A200 won't shut down when power supply is connected

The Satellite A200 just shuts down, if the power cable is disconnected before shutting down. Otherwise the notebook shuts down and restarts immediately (max 5 seconds between shut down and restart).
Does anybody got the same strange problem?

    Hi Thomas
You should definitely contact the ASP in your country. Maybe its something wrong with the power supply electronic on the notebooks motherboard.
As John said the replacement should be done for free because the A200 is a new series and the warranty should be valid.
    Good luck

  • MacBook won't start on battery/shuts down when power adapter is removed

    Help & advice needed please.
My MacBook won't start without external power, it gives a whir then a click then nothing. Once started up, if I remove the external power it just shuts off.
The battery shows at 98% & charging. Coconut Battery shows the following:
Current battery charge 4126 (& increasing as I type)
    Maximum battery charge 4200
    Current battery capacity 4200
    Original battery capacity 5200
    80%
    Battery loadcycles 111
Age of your Mac 6 months
    Charger connected yes
    Battery is charging yes
Does anyone have a clue why the Mac won't power itself on the battery when everything else seems like it works?
    Cheers!

As of today, my MacBook and I have been together for 40 days. Yesterday, while I was happily surfing (on battery), it powered down with no warning. Okay, these things happen. I plugged it in, restarted, and all seemed to be fine. Battery was about 70%. I did other things on my other machines and when it was about 90%, unplugged it and everything was good. This morning after using it unplugged for 1.5 hours it did the same thing, but decided to only work with the power adapter, not on battery alone. When trying to boot without AC, it would try to spin the CD and then fall back into off. When on AC, if I pulled the adapter, it would last two seconds and go blank. I made an appt. with the Apple store (Fashion Show Mall, Las Vegas) for 3:20pm. I got there right at 3:20pm and the monitors showed I was 5th in line. Store was fairly packed, at least one patron at every display item. Monitors also said the next MacGenius appt. was "approx. 8:30pm." Glad I made an appt! I was served about 15 min. later, during which time the monitors had changed to "No more MacGenius appts. available today, please try tomorrow." However, one guy came by without an appt. and was told he would be put on standby and to come back in 30 min.
Once I explained my issue with my MacBook battery, my Genius tried one of his batteries. "I just want to make sure it's your battery and not your motherboard." My machine worked fine, so he said "No problem, I'll have you out of here in 10 minutes." He got me a brand new battery, tested it, and put my old one in a box on the rear counter with four others. He pulled the serial number from the "About this Mac" area, didn't need my receipt for purchase date or anything. I had even printed this page: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/ to use as ammunition, but didn't need it. He did approve highly of my dashboard widget "iStat pro", available here: http://islayer.com/.
So the battery issue is a very common problem, and one that Apple has tried to deal with as painlessly as possible for the consumer. My Genius did ask if the battery showed an "X" in the icon bar, and I said no. Just wouldn't run on battery. On the way out of the store, one of the 3 MacBooks, in fact the one closest to the door, had an "X" on the battery icon. When I unplugged the power, it shut down immediately! The moral of the story is to contact Apple immediately with problems and give them a chance to fix them. Hope this helps others.

  • Why does Motion crash when I try to remove rigged parameter?

Each time I try to remove a rigged Mask source drop well Motion crashes.
This video shows the steps I take. Will you please see if you can recreate the crash?
I've tested this on two different Mac computers (Macbook Pro with Lion and Macbook with Snow Leopard) and in both Motion 5.0.6 and 5.0.7 and it crashes everytime.
    Steps
    Create transition
Add image mask to Transition A
    Create Rig
    Add Pop Up widget
    Create a new group
Rig Mask Source and Inver Mask to Pop Up
    Save, Close, Quit Motion
    Reopen file
In Pop Up widget right click on Mask Source and select Remove from widget.
    Did it crash?

Nobody wants to purposely crash Motion? I don't blame you but it's for science!

  • MBP Shuts Down when Power cord is removed

My MBP almost instantly shuts down when the power cord is unplugged. The battery has been fully charged; I've tried restarting the laptop, holding down the power button for 10 seconds, and resetting the SMC.
    What is going on??

I'm having the very same problem, and unless I find something on the discussions, I'm taking it into the Apple store as soon as possible.
This is my third battery, and each one seems to have a lifetime of about three months. This situation is different, though. The first one was bulging and shutting down when the battery was below 25% charged and the max battery capacity was dropping sharply. The second one was part of the exchange program, but I noticed it was starting to bulge and the max capacity was starting to drop (below ~60%).
This time, the max capacity is around 75% and I first noticed that it would shut down from sleep sporadically when on battery power. Then today, when I opened it, it shut down immediately. The battery was ~90% charged, but it wouldn't start up without the AC adapter. Now every time I unplug the adapter, the computer shuts down within 3 seconds. I also reset the SMC, which I think is the same process as resetting the PMU, perhaps they are equivalent terms or analogous devices, but the problem persists. There is no way to calibrate the battery since the computer won't run off it.
Unless there is something else to try, I recommend anyone with these problems should ask for a replacement battery.

What does out of regulation limits means ?
1 red "OUTPUT FAIL," normally is off but illuminates when power supply outputs are out of regulation limits

    Hi,
    Seet this:
    LED
    Meaning
    INPUT OK
    AC-input power supplies:
•Green—Source AC voltage is OK. (Input voltage is 85 VAC or greater.)
•Off—Source AC voltage falls below 70 VAC, is not present, or the PEM is turned off.
    DC-input power supplies:
•Green—Source DC voltage is OK. (-40.5 VDC or greater.)
•Off—Source DC voltage falls below -33 VDC or is not present at the PEM.
    FAN OK
Green—Power supply fan is operating properly.
Off—Power supply fan failure is detected.
    OUTPUT FAIL
Red—Problem with one or more of the DC-output voltages of the power supply is detected.
    Off—DC-output voltages within acceptable margins.
Note For proper operation of the OUTPUT FAIL LED, systems with single power supplies must be configured with a minimum of one fan tray and one supervisor engine. Systems with dual power supplies must have a minimum configuration of one fan tray, one supervisor engine, and one additional module. Failure to meet these minimum configuration requirements can cause a false power supply output fail signal.
This is for 6500 switches but apply to almost all models.

  • Computer crashes when updating to 6.0

I just got a new ipod and had to upgrade to 6.0, but when I try to install it my computer crashes. I make it through much of the installing process until I get to this "Finish" stage, and my computer always crashes when the installer says "Removing Applications". I have disabled all of my firewall protections and have done virus and spyware scans and it still is not working. Also, when I try to uninstall my old itunes, it is not even in the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs list; however, the itunes icon is still on the desktop.
I would greatly appreciate any help anyone might have.
    Thanks.

hmmmm. i haven't seen many 0x8Es showing up under these circumstances. so we're in general-principles-troubleshooting mode here.
the virus and spyware scans were a good first step. if your security software provider(s) offer them, try supplementing that with an online scan. (this can pick up infections that disable the installed software on the PC.)
the MS article cited in the Windows STOP reference i gave you earlier suggests that this can sometimes be caused by device drivers. so let's make sure all your drivers are up to date. (let's make sure that in particular your video drivers and any wireless card drivers are up to date.)
Updating the drivers on your Windows PC
... but let's also capture a minidump of the crash and send it to the Discussions Hosts, so they can throw it over the fence for an Apple Engineer to analyze.
To set up your machine to capture a minidump, right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", select the "Advanced" tab, select the "Startup and Recovery" Settings button, select "small memory dump" from the popup. When it crashes, look for the MiniDump file. It's usually in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Minidump" and is called something like Mini<number>-<number>.dmp.
And then send it to a Discussions Host. It doesn't hurt to put the URL to this discussion thread, so that whoever gets it has some context. Also give as much information about the context of the crash (in the email) as you can.
    love, b
