Crash when rendering

I am running a CS4 9.0.2.42 trial. I successfully rendered my video which is about 4 mins long. Then I needed to make some changes, which I did and tried to render it again. Now if freezes part way through the rendering process. So I tried to break the video into smaller pieces so it does not have to render as much and I get this error and After Effects shuts down:
"After Effects error: Crash in progress. Last logged message was: <3420> <ae.blitpipe> <2> rect t:0.000000 |:0.000000 w:0.000000 h:-71.000000"
"After Effects can't continue sorry, After Effects has crashed. See http://www.adobe.com/support/products/aftereffects/html for known issues. If you still can't resolve the issue, please contact Adobe Technical Support (2).
( 0 :: 42 )"
I checked the link it gave me, but it did not help.
All of the videos I am working with are all wmv files using whatever compression that windows movie maker uses. I have some jpg and bmp in the background. The rendering settings I changed are:
Lossless with Alpha
Xvid compression
Audio to output turned on
Other than that I left the rendering settings alone since it worked for me before.
I am using:
Windows XP Media Center SP 3
2 GB memory
1.86 GHz dual core CPU
NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT video card
I know it isn't the best system for using AE, it does take about 40 mins to render a 4 min video, but in the past it did actually render the video.
Anyone know what is wrong and how to fix it? Please keep in mind, I am very new to AE and I need you to make your answers as detailed as possible, I don't know much about video rendering either, I just know what worked before and am using it again. Thanks.

If I were you, I'd trick that machine out with RAM.  2GB is NOTHING in AE-Land.  Heck, the operating system's using about half of your memory.
Other things to do:
If you're using Open GL  to accelerate renders, turn it off.
If you're trying to use multiprocessing, turn it off and LEAVE it off.  A 32-bit machine can only see 4GB RAM, and that's nowhere near enough to use multiprocessing.
And since we're talking about AE 9, it could be the footage, too.  I'm pretty sure wmv files qualify as problematic, so I'm going to paste in an answer I give a lot on the Creative COW:
Dave's Stock Answer #1:
If the footage you imported into AE is  any  kind of the following -- footage in an HDV acquisition codec, MPEG1, MPEG2, AVCHD, mp4, mts, m2t, H.261 or H.264 -- you need to convert it to a different codec.
These kinds of footage use temporal, or interframe compression. They have keyframes at regular intervals, containing complete frame information.  However, the frames in between do NOT have complete information.  Interframe codecs toss out duplicated information.
In order to maintain peak rendering efficiency, AE needs complete information for each and every frame. But because these kinds of footage contain only partial information, AE freaks out, resulting in a wide variety of problems.
I'm a Mac guy, so I like to convert to Quicktime movies in the Animation or PNG codecs; both are lossless.  I'll use Apple's Compressor, Adobe Media Encoder or Quicktime Pro to do it.
How come things worked okay up until now?  You got lucky.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it, then drag or copy it — do not type — into the Terminal window:
    find . $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Press return. The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "35." Please post it in a reply.

    Hi,
On one of my computers, After Effects Crashes when rendering to H264. It always chrashes when doing the last frame of a clip. I think its when muxxing the m4a and the m4v together...
Does anyone have a solution? maybe there is some odd codec trash going on?
    Thanks in advance!

In every version of AE that has been capable of exporting h.264 the quality has been significantly lower than exporting with an app that gives you the option of multi-pass rendering. This has always been true for MPEG codecs that use inter frame (temporal) compression. You just can't get the same quality without multi pass compression. This goes back to the first use of MPEG streams.
AE CS6 may have H.264 encoding broken internally, but any pro has never used AE to render highly compressed delivery codecs because AE was never designed to be the right tool for the job.

  • Speed Grade Crashes when rendering

SpeedGrade crashes on me when I try to render graded footage to an h.264 file.  I have tried both mts footage from the canon xh-a1 that has been converted to quicktime as well as footage straight out of the 5D Mark 2.  I can grade the footage, but every time I try to render the footage I get, 100% render completion and then SpeedGrade crashes.  Also no file is ever created from the output. Very Frustrating.  Any thoughts on what could be the problem.
    Thanks

I have been using the English version and It crashes all the same.

Thank you for sending the crash report. This is a known issue and only affects Italian builds. We have isolated this and working on a fix. Please stay tuned and use an English version of SpeedGrade in the meantime. Thanks

  • Lightroom crashes when rendering Develop preview under Vista 64-bit

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit and Lightroom 1.1 crashes every time I click the "Develop" pane. My images are DNG files without the original RAW embedded.
Lightroom ONLY crashes when I load an image in Develop. If I open Develop without any image selected, it's fine (no image is displayed). I can zoom in to 100% in Library and it works fine. Exporting images to JPG works fine. Editing photos in the Library pane is fine. The crash data is:
    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
    Application Name: lightroom.exe
    Application Version: 1.1.0.0
    Application Timestamp: 4677e8e1
    Fault Module Name: MFC80U.DLL
    Fault Module Version: 8.0.50727.163
    Fault Module Timestamp: 4484afec
    Exception Code: c0000005
    Exception Offset: 0002511c
    OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
    Locale ID: 1033
I've uninstalled LR 1.1 and reinstalled and it does the same thing. When I uninstall LR 1.1 and the install LR 1.0 (the previous version) Develop does open, but it doesn't render the images correctly - it looks like it misinterprets the white balance by about 1,500k degrees (very ugly), but Library shows the correct image/white-balance.
I've updated my nVidia 7900 graphics drivers to the latest version, appropriate to my OS and architecture. I've disabled XMP creation and Adobe Photo Downloader, as well as all other running applications (Antivirus, spyware, itunes, etc).
This USED to work fine in Vista and I did not make any significant changes, but I expect it's an issue with WindowsUpdate causing an incompatibility. I can't roll-back to my Vista state when it worked a month ago (that's another Vista frustration).
Anyway advice or comments would be GREATLY appreciated since this is an integral part of my professional workflow. I own a legitimate, licensed copy of both Lightroom and Vista, yet neither company is willing to talk to me unless I pay them money, which I think is complete extortion, but I digress.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Has anyone got a resolution on this? I have the same issue. Lightroom crashes when I click develop and the develop module begins to render the image. Clicking develop with no image selected allows the develop module to load however selecting develop on the menu bar and choosing either previous photo or next photo causes lightroom to crash while rendering an image.
I have a 64 bit capable HP XW8400 workstation with 2 dual core Xeon processors, 4 GB RAM, and a nVidia FX 4400 graphics card. This video card was put in as a test. the original video card was an nVidia quadra NVS something. When I ran the NVS card I used the drivers certified for Adobe CS2. I am running 32 bit Windows XP SP2 with all current updates. I do not have any MS office components installed on this system.
I read of some troubles around the Realtek HD audio driver and some Adobe applications (not Lightroom). Since I have this sound device I disabled it and removed the drivers...still crashes.
I also disabled the Intel VT in the system bios (I believe this is required to run 64 bit XP or Vista)... no change. Also disabled the NX feature...no change.
I also loaded VMware workstation 6.0 and installed Lightroom in a 32bit Windows XP SP2 VM. In the VM Lightroom works perfectly on the same machine...just not as snappy...
This stinks...Lightroom works perfectly on my poky laptop.

  • After Effects: Windows 7: QT32 Server.exe Crashing When Rendering H264

    Hi,
I am encountering After Effects on Windows 7 SP1 outputting an "Output Module Failed" when rendering any comp to the desktop as a QT H264(even a new project w/ a comp w/ just a single solid & no effects) in both After Effects 12.1/2 and Media Encoder(of a AE comp). I have already done the following:
    Removed Preferences
    Cleared Cache
    Turned Off Firewall
    Reinstalled QT 7
    Restarted Machine
Other discussions/posts regarding QT32 Server and AE seem to be focused on OS X. I've checked QT's component folders to find no components. Not sure if I should be looking elsewhere. There are no third party codecs installed. I have encountered this at two different studios I do IT for. Beyond uninstalling CC and running the Cleaner, is there anything I can do?
    Thanks,
    Anthony

Do you have a computer with a lot of processor cores? The Apple H.264 encoder used for QuickTime has a severe bug when used on a system with 24 or more processor cores (so, a 12-core computer with hyperthreading enabled).
Why are you creating a QuickTime movie with H.264? QuickTime is generally a good container, and H.264 is a good codec, but H.264 in QuickTime is a mess. What, exactly, are you going to do with this file? How are you determining your delivery specifications?

  • PreP crashes when rendering preview on timeline

    Hi,
I'm using CS3. PrePro crashes when I try to render a preview on the timeline. It was working fine, then a few days ago it started doing what I described. I was almost done with the project when this started happening. I'm still able to make an AVI of the sequences,...but of course that is not a solution. Any suggestions on how to fix?

  • SpeedGrade is crashing when rendering 60fps footage to 23.97fps?

I've been using speedgrade cs6 all year and this has never happened to me and I'm not sure how to fix it. I've gotten all the update patches for it and it still crashes when rending footage to frame rates. Any ideas what the problem could be?

My in codec is H.264, Linear PCM and my out codecs I've tried is Apple ProRes 4444 @ 23.976fps and Apple ProRes 422 (LT) @ 23.976. All the footage is from a canon 60D recording 60fps.
My setup is a macbook pro running OS X 10.8.4. Processor: 2.6 GHz Intel core i7. Memory: 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3. Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB.

  • Premiere CS4 Crashes when rendering audio

This is the first time I have encountered this issue.  I am working on a nested 4 camera sequence and have performed a multicamera edit.  I have been cutting the multicamera timeline for a couple of weeks now and today I had a issue where I was rendering the audio on the multicamera timeline and premiere crashed.  The computer crashes every time I render the audio or shortly afterwards.  If it makes it through the render the program crashes soon after when I am scrubbing through the audio.  No specific error just "Premiere Pro has encountered and error and needs to close"  I've tried deleting the rendered files then recreating them.  I've tried replacing the audio layer 1 from the source sequence with a new .wav then rendering the audio in the multicamera sequence but neither has worked.  I also tried starting a new project and importing the multicamera project into the new project I had just created but I still could not render the audio.  Now I'm wondering if one of my clips within the project is causing a problem but I don't know how to go about testing this theory other than deleting each audio asset one at a time from audio layer 1 of the source sequence timeline, then attempt to render my nested multicamera sequence.
Anyone ever have this problem before?  It's driving me crazy!

Thanks, that is a good option.  I was able to find and remove two clips on the raw footage timeline that seemed to be causing rendering problems.  I have not had any crashes since.  If I do, I will use your advice.

  • "Error Compiling Movie: Unknown Error" or program crash when rendering

I just built a new PC because my Macbook Pro couldn't render fast enough. Now that I have built this brand new computer, I can't render at all! I render once and get the "Error Compiling Movie: Unknown Error" and if I try to render again, the program crashes.
My files are not corrupt as I can render them without problems on my laptop (just slowly) and on a friend's PC. I can export fine but the project I am working in is currently very small. I have 450gb of space and when using After Effects, rendering is a breeze. I have restarted, uninstalled and reinstalled and nothing seems to be doing the trick.
I feel like this must be a bug in Premiere Pro CC. Has anyone had this problem and/or come up with any solutions?

You may have more luck getting help with this kind of problem on the AME forum. Or at least have a look at this page from the AME forum prompting you for the information that can help in isolating the cause of this problem: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1011883.
