Crashed and lost my bookmarks

Is there a way to get my bookmarks back after a crash wiped them out? (I shut down without closing Virtual PC, my computer got really mad...took me most of the morning to reconfigure everything, grrr)

The strange part is the hard crash on the shutdown,
losing unrelated files to Virtual PC and yet having
no errors reported on the HD. You could look at the
crash reporter in your log file (accessed via Console
in your Utilities menu), however, it's beyond me to
dicipher that type of information.
So here's my suggestions for more efficient
computing:
A few things that can make
computer life easier:
In Safari:
- Each day, go to the Safari Menu and "empty cache".
- In your User Library>Safari folder, you'll find a
file called "bookmarks.pilst". This file holds your
Bookmarks. Single-click on the file, then command
key + D to make a duplicate copy. Do this every few
weeks or whenever you add a lot of bookmarks. This
way, if anything weird happened to your bookmark file
(corruption), then you have a back-up to revert to.
- keep the cookies file clean of unnecessary items -
you can see the Cookies file in your Safari
Preferences>Security panel - click on the "cookies"
button. Remove any items you don't use regularly.
The one's you want to retain are those for banking
and credit card sites, Apple, and any other sites
requiring passwords. The rest can go simply by
single-click and then "remove".
Routine System Maintenance - This is so
important. Otherwise, little problems that go
unnoticed can become bigger ones, slowing down the
system, or even corrupting the hard drive. For
routine maintenance I use
OnyX. There is no charge for the
software, but I believe the developer asks for a
donation.
It's very easy to use. I run it twice a month. Once
it is installed, you would double click on the OnyX
icon in your application folder (or drag an icon to
your dock for quick access) to open the application.
After entering your administrator password, you
would select "automation". The panel looks like
this:
Select the same items I have checked and then select
"execute". The program takes about 5 to 10 minutes
to run. Leave your computer alone, that is don't
use it for anything else until OnyX is finished.
Once complete, restart the computer and you're good
to go.
Lastly, the most effective maintenance is having a
full backup of your system on an external hard drive.
All machines fail eventually, despite the best
maintenance. If you had a hard drive failure
without any backup, then you would lose all your
information, including documents, images, songs,
etc. Not a pretty picture.
For your system, you would purchase either an
external firewire drive for the older Mac machines
(G5/G4 or G3), or a USB or Firewire Drive for the new
Intel Machines. The key here is creating a "clone"
backup on the drive, which you back up regularly, or
at least once a week. For the backup process I use
SuperDuper. Very easy to use.
The initial backup takes about 1 to 2 hours.
Subsequent backups take 5 to 10 minutes. Total $$$
investment can be anywhere between $100 - $250
depending on the size of your Hard Drive.
Lastly, Please mark this post "solved" or "helpful"
to the right of my name (you'll need to log-on to the
forum). Helpful for others looking for a solved
solution to a similar question, also helpful for me.
Aloha from Big Island.

RAM 250 gb HD/iBook G4 1.33 ghz 1.5gb RAM 40 gb HD
Mac OS X (10.4.8)   LaCie 160gb d2 HD Canon i960
printer
I have finally completed all the suggestions you had for me. I have aquired and installed Onyx which is cool, and I bought a back-up hard drive. I have a USB connection to it, and maybe that is why it is sooooo slow(?). I have Super Duper, and the idea of creating a clone sounded good, but the copying process was going to take a day and a half (rough estimate) at the rate it was going. Should I do it anyway?
Thanks for your help again on this old topic made new again. -garden girl

My pc has crashed and lost a considerable amount of music and videos from iTunes the files are still in iTunes but are empty, will iTunes Match restore my content over the cloud?

Hm ... I guess I can't edit the post above. Anyway, I seem to have solved it by ...
    Quitting iTunes.
Going into Home / Music / iTunes, and renaming the file "iTunes Library.itl" to "iTunes Library (corrupt).itl".
Entering Time Machine, and restoring the "iTunes Library.itl" file from a few days ago. I went back two days, which seemed far enough back to be "before" the problem but not far enough back to have trouble with recent acquisitions.
Re-opening iTunes - and everything seemed to be back in order.
So that's fine for now. We'll see if the solution is stable.
Very, very tentative assignment of blame: I believe iTunes crashed earlier today after I'd synced photos from my iPhone to iPhoto, and then iTunes crashed while iPhoto was closing (and taking its sweet time doing so). If that was indeed the case, that's at least the second time in the past couple of months that trying to sync iPhone photos to iPhoto has caused me significant problems. (The last time led to 80% of my iPhone suddenly being occupied by "Other", and a full restore of the darn thing.)

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to backup, not good, then you can redownload some purchases in some countries.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

system crashed and lost library, want to recover

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't know how to fix the xml file or prevent it's damage except to keep a current backup copy of the domain.sites2 file. You can do that on an hourly basis with Time Machine or use a backup application like Synk Standard which can do incremental backup (i.e. copy just those new or changed files) at any time.
As for separating the sites into their own domain files I use iWebSites to manage over 75 individual sites. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process and move it to another location on your HD until you're satisfied the separation process is completed and what you want.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.
There is a downside to this method if you're publishing to MobileMe. When publishing multiple sites to MMe from their own separate domain file the last published site will be the default site when using the default URL for that MMe account: http://web.me.com/MobileMeAccountName/. That could mess up any CNAME forwarding if you have a domain name pointed to your default MMe site.

If you open your current profile folder, do you have a bookmarkbackups folder in there?
Help > Troubleshooting Information > Open Containing Folder button
If so, copy those somewhere safe before proceeding.
If not, do you ever back up your profile folder?
You also might navigate up a level and see whether you have any other Firefox profiles.
If you cannot save any new bookmarks, I wonder whether your places.sqlite file (stores history and bookmarks) in your profile has become corrupted. You might need to rename that file and allow Firefox to create a new one before you can save new bookmarks again. I wouldn't delete the file just yet, as it might contain some useful stuff.

  • Upgraded to latest firefox and lost my bookmarks

i just upgraded to new version of firefox and lost my bookmarks. i reviewed you section on lost bookmarks and suggestions do not seem to apply to getting bookmarks back. please advise and thank you!

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • HT203167 Computer crashed and lost all music.  How can I get a listing of all prior purchases and get them downloaded again?

Compaq computer crashed and lost all music that was on the computer. How would I go about getting a listing of all purchased items and download them again? I know when i first got set up it said I could download up to 2 times when purchased and I have only downloaded once.  But need a listing of songs as well.

One thing that I also recommend in the future is to back your iTunes library up relatively regularly.  You can get your purchases in the cloud just fine, typically, but at the very least, it will save some time by backing it up.
