Crashed drive with Grey Apple Screen and Spinning Circle!!

I need some help!!
My G5 desktop computer had Font error, and then it crashed. I pressed the power button to restart and it won’t booth up! All I get it the Grey Apple Screen and Spinning Circle with loud fan noise.
I’ve tried using the install CD to booth up to use the Disk Utility, but it won’t let me select the primary Seagate drive (I do see the drive name), therefore I can’t repair or do anything.
When I tried to re-install the OSX, the system won’t even see the primary drive to reinstall.
Is this drive dead? (I never had clicking noise before) or is the Drive corrupted? How do I fix this problem?
Can someone please help me?

I’m not sure which button I pressed, but I was able to see my Hard Drive with OSX and OSX Disk, but when I clicked on the Hard Drive it just does the gray screen
So, I used the OSX install Disk to boot up to run the Disk Utility.
I can see the drive name, but when I click on the drive nothing happens. Verify and Repair buttons are grayed out.
I’ve tried the Safe mode but it won’t start up.
I never had Applejack installed on the hard Drive so I can’t test it that way either.
How can I save this hard drive?
Is there another way to repair this?

Mac Air locks on startup with grey apple screen and spinning wheel

when I start my MacBook Air all I get is the grey screen with the Apple and the spinning wheel. This screen does not change. Ive shutdown and allowed to charge overnite with no success. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I cam in to work this morning and found my Mac on with fans blazing the the display just showing the grey Apple screen and spinning circle. I have it set to turn on before I arrive at work and it has been doing so flawlessly for all the years I've had it. When I shut down last night everything was working fine. Now this.
I've scanned some help forums but can't quite determine what the cause might be. Old battery on the memory card, a bad memory chip, ...I'm not sure.
As I said, things had been working flawlessly for years.
I've tried unplugging and re-plugging in the power cord (nope), resetting the PRAM (didn't work), Pressing the PRAM button on the memory board (again no), resetting things from Open Firmware (Using these commands: reset-nvram, set-defaults, reset-all -- no luck)and now have Disk Utility repairing permissions from the install DVD. That doesn't seem to be doing anything, it has been "Determining correct file permissions" from my startup disk for about 20 mintues now...usually it goes a lot quicker.
Any thoughts? This is my primary work machine and if I can't get it running I'm dead in the water. I'm accessing these forums from a PC in the office and would rather not have to, hahah.

I repair the hard drive that contains the Startup volume, unless multiple partitions are present.
In that case, only the startup volume.
Rather than "repair permissions", "Repair Disk" is what you should run on the startup volume.

nephew had mutliple tabs open and shut down the iMac by hitting the button on the back instead of closing everything corectly. Now the only screen i get is the white with apple logo and the loading circle icon. i have attempted restart and c key with disk in but cant even get a menu to come up. What can I attempt from home before having to haul this into the store?

wireless keyboard and mouse were working prior to safe mode attempt, i was able to eject disk. still waiting on the safe mode restart. I'm not sure what I should be looking for to confirm safe mode and what the screen should look like if successfully processing. it seems to be putting off a lot of heat. BRB

I have a 1.83 Ghz MBP with 512 mb of RAM (lame I know). The other day someone was using my computer to burn a CD on iTunes when all of my programs began failing. On instinct I rebooted my computer to solve the problem. Alas, now I cant boot past the grey apple screen, and the gear is spinning away. Saddest part of the story is that I had time set aside to back up my computer the day after this happened . Anyway what is the best thing to do from here? I haven't made any moves to fix it yet really, so what is the best thing that I can do to try and get my files back?

Hi, I posted to you in yoour other thread.
I very much doubt Disk Utility or fsck will fix an +Invalid Node Structure+ error. That's a pretty serious error and DU is just not robust enough of a utility to repair it.
If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair. I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy. Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand.
If you have a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install will also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!

p.s. If the +Invalid Node Structure+ is real bad, there's a risk even the mighty DiskWarrior will not be able to help. Normally it will come thru; it's only in the severe cases it won't be able to do it. If you don't have a backup, and need the data bad, it's worth the try!

Gray screen could be any number of things, bad third party at boot kext file, a bad Apple one, a bad install/upgrade of OS X, drive corruption etc.

I tried to view a pdf from a website and a little window popped up. At the time i thought it was to save the pdf but i guess it was in fact asking me to find the adobe acrobat program. I quit out of it and now keep getting the grey screen and spinning circle when i try to download the pdf. How do I get it so i can open pdfs if find on websites? thanks!

Have exactly the same problem with my wife's MacBook Air. After restaring in Restore mode and trying to repair the disk (Disk Utility showed errors in the verification), the system tells me to backup as much data as possible (how?), re-format the disk and restore backed-up files. Error comes up when "updating boot support partitions for the volume as required".
Original restart action was done due to software update requesting it, if I remember correctly, iTunes was updated.
I don't want to start a painful back-up procedure (although I do regular back-ups): how should I know, where iPhoto stores it's data or where my mails are (yes, still using local mail)? How can I access the data if I can't boot?

Restart the computer and immediately hold the Option key down.
Select the Recovery partition and continue.
On the next pane, select Disk Utility and continue.
When DU opens, select your hard drive in the left column, click the First Aid tab, the click Repair Disk.
When that is done, quit DU and restart in the usual way.

Whenever i start my macbook pro the screen remains gray with the apple symbol and the circle timer below. The screen stays this way even if i leave it for hours.

When i turn on my macbook a box appears telling me i need to restart my computer (in different languages) and in order to do so i have to press on the off button for a lil while. Even after doing this the same box appears and it never restarts correctly. This box appears every single time. I rarely turn my computer off. I just place it on sleep mode and restarts it only when i get prompted to. I brought it to genius and they couldnt figure out what the problem is so i was told it needed to be shipped to get fixed. I didnt have anything backed up. All i want saved are the pictures because i went to 2 events where i was the assigned photographer and i didnt get to save it to an external memory. Genius said that when shipped i cant give instructions like make sure to save the pictures and if they are unable to, call me if they should go on with the process. I was wishful thinking that to fix the problem they might not even have to touch the pictures memory part. I brought my MBP back home hoping it will miraculously starts and id be able to back it up but now all it does when i turn it on is the screen remains gray with the apple symbol and the circle timer below. The screen stays this way even if i leave it on for hours. Please help me fix this!!! cant i really specify to the technicians at apple to please make sure not to erase the pictures? Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. Maybe this will let the iPad reboot and then you may need to restore again but see if this helps to start the iPad first.
