Crashed lost files

A folder with a question mark appeared on the desktop and I could not get into the system to retrieve files.
Thought it would be similar to OS9, I reinstalled the system software but lost all work files etc.
Is there an unerase software to retrieve the lost work as we could do OS9.
Any advice please.

  • Itunes crashed, lost files??, files wont play.

i just tried itunes for the first time, i am running windows vista and if i had bean aware of the problems between itunes and vista i probably would not have done this. anways my problem.
when i first installed itunes it ran good and i setup an account and all was well, i made my frist purchase, which was scooby doo season 1 (16 eps) ,
however, while it was downloading the episodes my computer crashed several times, where i was taken to a blue screen where it said somthing about a crash dump and i had to restart, it did this many times durring the downloading of the files, but it always resumed,
after all the files had finished i noticed only 12 out of the 16 files were in the scooby doo folder, and whenever i tried to play any of these 12 files through itunes, windows just crashed back to a blue screen again, so i tried playing through quicktime player, the played but they played skippy where the video would freeze but the sound would keep going.
i tried there trouble shooting faq about increasing video performance but nothing worked.
    so i guess i want to know, how do i get my 4 missing files back???, and.. are the 12 files i currently have bad? or is it vista???? is there some kind of support email i can send this to? or does anyone know the answere to these questions? if not im out 24.95 =( , and i guess i cant trust itunes again, which i dont want to be that way ;_;

  • My Garageband project crashed, the file lost/damaged! How to recover it?

    Guys,
I've been working my garageband project when suddenly the window was closed and the notification asked me to reopen, report or ignore it.
This is my second time my project crashed. The first time, I chose 'reopen', and my file reopen. All the midi datas still there, but the sample sounds were empty. So I had to put it one by one. What a job because I had more than 15 instruments there.
But those jobs was better then what I experienced today. After my project crashed, I chose 'ignore' with assumption I would open the last saved file. But it didn't. I really lost my file. The size for one GarageBand projects is about more than 1 MB. But my file after crashed is about 56 KB! So some solutions like 'right click' and 'show package content' didn't work at all because I worked with midi data, not live recording. I tried to find the script file at projectdata and compared it with my other projects, they have more bytes than my lost project file.
So, if you have a same problem like me, just choose 'reopen'. I hope it will save your midi data so you don't have to work it out from beginning (just like I have to do after write this post ... x) )
So guys, is there any idea how to recover my crashed file? I've sent a report to Apple and still waiting their answer.
    Thanks a lot
    Andito

Reinstalling iTunes won't ever repair damaged libraries or find lost files.
Unlike nearly all Windows software double-clicking an iTunes Library file does not necessarily open the selected database. Rather, iTunes opens the last database it successfully opened, or if that was in the "normal" <User's Music>\iTunes location, but is missing, it will create a new empty library.
You can open an alternate library file, or create a new one, by holding down shift as you start iTunes. Although you can open the library files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder this way, your library will perform better if you restore the archived library database to the main iTunes folder in the way that I have described.
Your most recent library may be present in the main iTunes folder as a .tmp file, or recoverable via a file undelete tool, however either of these files, if found, may be partially corrupt getting you no further forward.
The two most recent releases of iTunes were June 11th and March 28th 2012..
Yes I read your post, but I don't know if you know all of the above. If you had a full backup of your library you could just restore that. It is possible that what you've tried so far hasn't yet brought back the most complete version of your library that is available to you. As a last resort you will have to work with what you have and add in whatever media is not in that version of your library, accepting the loss of recently added ratings, playlists & play counts.
You can simply add the entire iTunes Media folder using File > Add Folder to Library folder which should ignore everything already in the library and only add new (to that database) stuff. If there is any chance that your iTunes media folder contains .m3u playlist files the import process will also import all of those, which may not be what you want. iTunes Folder Watch would then present a better approach.

Excel crashed and when it autorecovered my file upon restart it opened the original file with none of the data I had added.
To find the autorecovered file I followed the instructions here: How to find a lost file in Microsoft Office Autorecovery
But now I cannot open the file without seeing the following error code. This happens even if I change the file type listed in the previously mentioned tutorial.

  • IBook lost file

I've had a lot of problems with my iBook and have recently had a new hard drive installed. Since the new hard drive was installed, I've reinstalled Word. Word crashes at least once a day and usually several times a day.
Most recently, I finished a document, saved it on my flash drive, then closed Word. I reopened the document to make a few changes, tried to save but was alerted of a permissions error and could not save. I closed Word to reopen the original, but it was no longer on my flash drive. I've checked the temporary folder by going to the Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and entering /private/tmp/. I've also checked my trash to no avail.
    Any help would be great.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you need to know you won't recover your lost file, never, unless you spend 300-600 bucks for a professional file recovering service.
This has happened once to me (with a powerpoint file), and once to a close friend of mine (also with powerpoint).
The common scenario is this: You are working with an already saved file (in any location, hard drive, flash drive, etcétera) and suddenly the application crashes and the file literally dissapears.
It is not on the folder it was, it is not on the trash, not hidden, etc... it is gone. Why? I don't know. How? Don't know either. Just know is something related to a Microsoft program, always.
When I posted this (a year ago and about 4 months ago, first happened to my friend in Monterrey, then to me in México city), no one even believed me, much less have any idea of what had happened.
Since then I stoped using word and powerpoint for working, now I only work with pages and keynote, and when I need to share, export to .doc or .ppt. It is safer.
My friend lost a presentation for a class that almost got him suspended, and I lost a presentation for a conference on which I had been working for at least 2 weeks (several hours a day) and it happened just the day before my conference. I had to skip sleep that night and came up with a bad copy of the highly polished presentation I had prepared.
I can't imagine what would I've done if Microsoft's Office apps had done me this on my 2-year long thesis documents (.doc, .ppt, .xls and .sav -ok, .sav is not a MS propietary format-) that I presented just 2 weeks before this first happened to my friend.

  • Firefox crashes - No crash dump file - No longer works

For some reason, I've had a few problems with Firefox recently. The latest is that each time I try to load it, it crashes straight away, occasionally letting me send an error report, others not. It always comes up with an error that states: Firefox had a problem and crashed. We'll try to restore your tabs and windows when it restarts. Unfortunately the crash reporter is unable to submit a crash report. Details: The application did not leave a crash dump file.
I've tried restarting my computer in safe mode to see if it works then, but it is coming up with the same error. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, yet nothing has helped at all. I've also got problems opening Chrome and Safari, and now Explorer seems to be the only browser that works on my computer. I've downloaded malwarebytes by recommendation from a family member, yet that isn't finding any viruses/malware on my computer. As that's what I initially thought it could be. As I'm unable to open Firefox at all, I'm unable to obtain any previous crash ID's. I do have the details that come up in the 'Details' box when Firefox says that it has crashed, but unsure whether that would help establish any sort of information to help with the issue. I'm not that technically minded, so if someone could help me out with it, I'd really appreciate it.
I'm stuck using Opera, and it was alright for a while, but now I'm getting annoyed that Firefox isn't working at all. It won't even open.
I really would appreciate the help!

    Do you have Roboform installed?
Do you have a SSO (single sign on) extension installed?

  • I accidentally formatted my portable hard drive when setting it up for time machine. Is there any way for me to get back my lost files?

I have an external hard drive of the brand Western Digital.
Before I got my iMac I moved a lot of my important files from my PC to the hard drive and today I went on and connected it to my iMac to move my files over to it.
When it had connected a window popped up that asked if I wanted to use this hard drive with the program Time Machine and create backups. Without thinking it trough enough and reading the warning properly (I'm stupid I know) I clicked "yes". I then realised how stupid it was and cancelled the formatting of the hard drive. But somehow the program still managed to delete all my important files and can't find any way to get them back. Neither can I connect the hard drive to my PC anymore so I can't check if the files are still there (which I doubt they are since I can't see them on my iMac either).
And now I wonder: is there any way for me to get back my lost files or are they lost forever?
    Thank you in advance!
    //Gina

A data recovery specialist or some data recovery programs should be able to help.  Most format simply rewrite the directory tree saying no files are on this disk.  The bits that represent the files are still flipped appropreiately so they still exists, you just don't have the location info to get at them.  Secure formats and erases rewrite each bit to a zero or 1 or random so the data is then truely gone.  This type of format takes a long time to complete.
I'm not making a recomendation of a particular program but here is one company that does what you ask:
http://www.remosoftware.com/mac-recovery  The cost is pretty high but I'm sure they don't sell many copies and need to cover their development costs.
Good luck and don't write anything on the freshly formatted disk until you decide what to do.

I Lost of my document saved in my previous adobe after upgraded itunes, can I get the lost file again?

Would you provide more information so that we can troubleshoot the problem?

  • External Drive Partition, Lost Files

As the title suggests, I made a mistake that "erased" all my files on a backup external hard drive, after splitting a partition in two and installing Mac OS X Leopard on the new partition. I use quotes in "erased" because the data itself is still there, but the access to it isn't anymore. Before thinking about using recovery software and going through the harsh process of churning through hundreds of GB of data to recover files that could be corrupted in the end, I wanted to seek the opinions of more knowledgeable people to see if there are alternative solutions that could be more simple.
Here's my situation and all the steps that lead to my current state. I have a iMac with Core 2 Duo Intel processor, 2.66 GHz, 2 GB of RAM and an internal hard drive of 320 GB, with Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.8) installed. For backup and temporary transfer of files, I use an external USB hard drive, a Seagate FreeAgent with 500 GB (500 billion bytes = 465 GB actually).
I wanted to boot from my external hard drive to do some maintenance on my iMac's hard drive. So I used Disk Utility to split the current partition (the only one) on my external drive. The drive had 465 GB, give or take, with approximately 50GB free. The other partition to be created was 10GB. I know this is the kind of delicate operation that should be done with caution, but Disk Utility was saying explicitly that "this partition will not be erased", refering to the big partition that will become approximately 455 GB, the one that contains all my files. I say to myself, okay, that is safe.
Now, here comes the thing that I'm not 100% sure about. At this point, I don't know if the big partition was already erased. Both partitions (455GB and 10GB) always mounted on the desktop just fine. I was probably just "presuming" that everything went fine.
Then I proceeded to install Mac OS X Leopard from the installation DVD on the small 10GB partition, which went fine. It's only at this moment that I realised that my big partition was empty. Shortly after, I set the permissions of the big partition to read-only, assuming it would minimize further damage.
That's about it. At this point, my first thought was, what exactly just happened? In my mind, playing with one partition should not affect the other ones, but apparently, something did anyway, for a reason that is beyond my knowledge. Right now, I'm still wondering what operation did do the damage, the partition split or the installation of Mac OS X? Why would any of these operations erase the big partition?
And here's another important point to ponder. Before the partition split, my external hard drive was formatted as APM, Apple Partition Map. After the split, or after the Mac OS X installation (which one, I don't know), the partition scheme had changed to GUID. Maybe this is the key to solve the problem.
I know that my data is still intact, at least in most part, and I know that the file structure (B-Tree information, and stuff like that) seems to be intact (completely or partially) as well, because I visualized some sectors of my drive with a tool called iBored, and I recognized some folder and file names.
That's all the details I can provide. Right now, I feel like any low-level operation on my external drive is like defusing a bomb. One little mistake, and boom! So I prefer to do nothing until I can get some advice from others.
    Thank you for your help!

I had the EXACT same issue last night.
Today, I downloaded Disk Drill and it is scanning and recovering my lost files from my external hard drive.
    http://www.cleverfiles.com/partition-recovery.html
I thought I was going to have a heart attack when none of my files showed up on my Finder and I did not have a clue what I was going to do as my hard drive has practically my whole life on there!
As we speak, disk drill is in the process of scanning my hard drive and locating lost files.
Next step is to recover the files..
    Estimated Time Remaining: 3h 20m
I will let you know if this was fully successful. It looks like it wil be though so I say you do what I'm doing and start recovering!

  • Dups, sharing problems and lost files on NAS drive

I have been trying ot set up a "shared library" on a network storage drive.  The process has been painful to say the least I have over 17k music files and 400+ audio books.
My first problem was creating duplicate files when pointing a new PC to iTunes media files. After trying multiple 3rd party software product unsucessfullly I finally bite the bullet and used the iTunes feature display duplicates feature.  Because I did not want to delete compliations and greatest hits dups I had to browse dups by album and manally sort through over 7,000 songs. Took me a week to complet but I did it. The larger problem I am now facing is lost files.
I sucessfully had both compurter pointed to the same media folder and everything was working great until I accidentally selected all of my file (yes 17,000+) and proceeded to delete them. I was trying to deleted all of the songs in a album that was duplicates... I caught my error only after a few secs but I am afraid the damage is done. The weird part is the songs are still in the library in iTunes but I now have close to 5,000 missing files icons and when I look for the files in the album folder, they are missing.  What is more irritating is not every song from every album is missing. so If I reimport from the original cd (I hope they are not too scratched) it creates dups of the file that are already there and I have go through and do a manual dup clean up again!!!
Anyone have a thought as to where the missing files are (they are not in the trash under deleted files).
Anyone know of a better way to share a large library between mutliple computers and iOS devices without haveing to have multiple copies to sync(i.e. Home sharing).
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

    Hi Rajnish,
As you mentioned "quota limit", it is set via FSRM or specific function on NAS?
Meanwhile could you confirm the number 185GB is accurate? Sometimes a part of used space is just not calculated. You can confirm with checking the total space on NAS locally.
If the number is correct and quota is set via FSRM, check if it is the Disk Quota which not re-calculated the released space. Try to clear the Quota setting and reconfig with 300GB limitation and see if issue still exists.

  • Photoshop CS5 has lost file associations

I recently installed both Photoshop and Dreamweaver CS5, deleting the CS4 versions after installation. I have lost file associations for all Photoshop-related files: eg jpg, tiff, gif and so forth, and the psd extension as vanished altogether. (That means that if you click on a .jpg file, it opens in a free MS utility like Paintshop rather than where you want it to go: in this instance, to Photoshop.)
I have taken the following measures, none of which have worked:
Manually altered the associations in Folder Options. I can browse to photoshop.exe, but nothing happens when I select it.
I have gone into the registry and deleted all associations under the relevant file types, eg .jpg etc. Restarting folder options replaces them exactly as they were, and I still cannot associate anything with Photoshop.
I have run Photoshop from the command prompt with the tag /regserver which ought to re-register it. Nothing happens. (If you want to try this, open the Start > Run box, browse to the .exe file and append (separated by a space) /regserver
I have changed and saved all file associations in the Bridge Options section. They are still there after I restart Bridge, but it has no effect on the overall file associations.
So that leaves me stuck. Both CS5 programs are registered in the program list, and both appear in the Start menu list of programs. Neither appear in the Folder Options list. I am running on XP Pro with today's (16 Sept 2010) MS updates. Can anyone help with this?

    Solution
I have found how to fix this, for me at least and on an XP machine. Some users may find the procedure a bit unnerving. You should anyway back up your registry before making these changes.
    Start > Run > regedit
    Go to:
    HKCurrentUser\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts
That will give you a long list of file extensions: ex .jpg, .png
Scroll down to and select the relevant ones, one by one. This is moderately laborious, but what follows is repeated exactly. (I found the .tiff extension was slightly different and left it alone. I never use tiffs so I don't know if it works unchanged.)
When you click on the + box for e.g.  .jpg, two 'folders' open. These are
    OpenWithList
This sets the list of potential programs to use for this extension, lettered a,b,c etc.The last entry in the 'folder' is MRUList which sets the priority order for these programs, eg if it has 'bcade' then program 'b' is first, 'c' is second etc. You can edit this order by clicking on it.)
    OpenWithProgIds
This stores what kind of image this is. Under .jpg I found that I had 'jpefile' and something like Photoshop.9 (I don't recall exactly.) This refers to a very old  version of Photoshop, certainly not the last one on this machine. All the other relevant image files had much the same terms associated with them. Some had four or five older Photoshop references: you can delete these entirely by right clicking on them. You then right click on the remaining Photoshop reference and alter it to read Photoshop.Image.12 Do not change the identity entry, e.g. the term 'jpefile', as mentioned above.
It is also worth navigating back up to
    HKCurrentUser\Software\Adobe\Photoshop
I found that I had reference to five separate versions of Photoshop. You can delete all but (numerically below) the 12.0 folder.
Close regedit and reboot. You will find that Folder associations now recognise Photoshop as a valid program and assign it to the files that you have changed. I have not tried adding to the list in Explorer > Folder associations.
This is pretty shameful, frankly. Adobe's installation program should clean out all preceding registry entries when it de-installs a version. It should most certainly write Photoshop12 refereces when installing. This must be a pretty geenral problem.

  • Photoshop CS3 crashes on File Open (related to Version Cue)

    Hi all,
I found some threads on PS crashing on file opening, but none of these were describing my issue, nor were the suggested fixes working.
    Here is what happens:
PS opens fine. I can open a file in PS if I open it from Bridge (or Explorer). If I select 'File > Open' in the PS menu however, the open file dialog attempts to open, but hangs and that's it. I can not escape out of it, and if I click close in the system tray it says PS is 'Not Responding' and sends an error message to Microsoft.
    This is what fixes it:
In 'preferences' - if I disable Version Cue, Photoshop works perfectly again. Only thing is, I need to use Version Cue!
Anybody else have this issue? Any ideas for fixes???
    Thanks all,
    Anne

Memory address issues can be tough to track down. Often, they will occur when a program either mis-reports the memory addresses used, or tells the OS that it has released them, when it has not.
Though written with video editing in mind, there still might be some tips for setting up your computer, in this ARTICLE. If you have Win7, please look down-thread for Black Viper's tuning page.
Now, Adobe programs have always been great at reporting their memory usage, but it could still happen - I've just never encountered it over the decades.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • I recently updated the iOS on my ipad 3 and lost all my files in the process. How do I recover my lost files which were not previously backed up?

I recently updated the iOS on my ipad 3 and lost all my files in the process. How do I recover my lost files which were not previously backed up?

If you don't have them backed up somewhere, then there's little possibility of recovering them. There are some utilities that can in some cases recover an inadvertently-deleted photo, but I've found none that can recover photos or other data from an iPad that was erased as part of an iOS upgrade. You can do a web search for something like "iPhone photo recovery" and you'll find some utilities you can try.
    Regards.

  • Is there any collective way to have Lightroom 5 find lost files?

Though I have tried to move folders and files only with Lightroom, I note that a good number of my images shown in thumbnails in Library cannot be opened because Lightroom 5 cannot find the files.  I assume I have moved files among drives accidentally without Lightroom's knowledge.  I also note that I can control click and try to find individual files.  Is there any way to do this find process for entire folders or drives?  Can I import files from a drive (which is the original source of the lost files) in mass and run them through the import function on Lightroom and return them directly to the file from which they were imported?  Would this create a new thumbnail in Library but duplicate the files in the affected folder and drive?

Lightroom isn't going to allow you to import images a second time. In the left-hand panel of the library module you can Ctrl-click on a folder and choose to update the folder location or find the missing folder. Have you tried that?
