Crashes on battery power

Totally weird. After upgrading to Yosemite a couple of months ago I get sporadic system crashes on my MacBook Pro. They occur periodically, usually once or twice a day; often when there was no apparent activity or app work being done. After several weeks of living with this, I detected the following common factors:
1 - the system does not crash if it is on mains power
2 - remaining power in the battery is usually around 30%
3 - it is not possible to generate a crash, even with these conditions in place - the crash just happens without warning.
It is not a kernel crash in the sense that the system does not goes into auto reboot.  All power is lost and the power button has to be activated to bring the system back up.
For a while, I thought it might have something to do with the Parallels/Win7 VM, but the crash also recently happened again when neither of these are open.
When reviewing the Mac system logs, there was no indication of any activity or abnormal condition immediately before the crash. In fact, in most instances there were no console log entries for several minutes before the crash. I have not yet contacted Apple support, but wanted to know if any other users have experienced anything similar before I do that? Incidentally, the same MacBook Pro never crashed like this with Mavericks.

I now suspect the problem to be a faulty battery.  Inspection of the battery health shows 825 cycles and only a 68% 'health'.  However, the fact that the system does a sudden shutdown when 30% of battery charge is shown as remaining is troubling. I think a visit to the Genius Bar is on my calendar.  The battery is only just over 2 years old.

  • Powerbook crashing on battery power after repair

I just performed a repair of my PB (replacing a screen hinge). It's okay, except that now it freezes on battery power.
The pattern is very strange: if I reboot with the battery, it makes it all the way to the login screen and freezes when I try to type.
If I unplug it while it is already booted then the screen dims (I have it set to do that on battery power) and then freezes a second or so later.
All activity ceases, the cursor becomes unresposive. It's not that the computer is not getting power: the screen stays lit, for example (and of course, it can boot all the way to login screen on battery power; it also can operate for quite a while in single user mode on battery power; I tried it long enough to fsck the disk).
The specific symptoms of the the problem are just so bizarre that I'd suspect a software problem if I hadn't just done this big repair. (By the way, I've repaired the disk (no problems) and, even though I think it's useless, I repaired permissions too, just for good measure; neither had any effect.)
Does anyone have any clue what I could have done to precipitate such a weird problem? Could there be some screw that is over- or under-tightened? A connector that is loose? Should I just take the thing apart again and put it back together again?

Well, the problem is solved, though the mystery remains. I carefully took the computer apart again and tested it after every piece was removed. It failed every time. Finally there was not enough left to actually boot. Then I reassembled it and, behold, it works!
I removed the keyboard, modem, airport card, fan connector, and PCMCIA cage and still had a crashing system. (I'd also removed and reconnected the battery cable, and moved the DIMMs around.)
So then I just finished the job. I disconnected the following from the logic board: hard drive, DVD drive, display, speakers/mic, power button (yeah, yeah, there's a few more I could have removed and kept a bootable system, but I was starting to get bored). Then I removed the logic board, looked at it stupidly, put it back, and reconnected all those connectors.
Then it worked. (So I put back all the other stuff, and it still works.)
So presumably one of those connectors was lose, or else the logic board was somehow incorrectly mounted.
I still don't really understand how a loose connector or incorrectly mounted logic board would lead to the symptoms I was seeing, so if anyone has a hypothesis, I'd love to hear about it.

Laterly my macbook, which is uses very often, suddenly crashes every now and then when it's on battery power. Even when it's is (almost) full. It's 18 month's old. • Issue with computer crashing and saying i have no battery power!

I have been having an issue when the power cord is not connected and my macbook pro w/ retina has been powering off and when i press the power button it says that i have no battery. When i plug the computer in it will turn on fine, then the battery says that there is battery power still. I think it may be a graphics card issue but I'm not sure. THIS HAS ONLY BEEN GOING ON SINCE I HAVE UPDATED TO YOSEMITE! Why is this issue happening and what can i do to fix it??

    Hi tyler260,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with the Yosemite update. If you are having unusual power or battery issues on your MacBook Pro since the install, you may want to try resetting the System Management Controller (SMC), as outlined in the following article:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
If you are still having issues after the SMC reset, you may also find this article helpful:

  • Laptop freezes while on battery power.

I have Arch 64 bit install on a Thinkpad T510. While the laptop is plugged into power, it is rock solid and can run for days without a crash.
The laptop freezes up quite often when it is running on battery power. After anything from 15 minutes to an hour, it will probably freeze. I cannot switch to a tty, I just have to do a hard reset.

I'm not sure if tracker could be causing the problem, or if it is something else.
I have the discrete graphics card enabled - NVIDIA Corporation GT218 [NVS 3100M]

It might not necessarily be caused by loss of power, but maybe if the battery power dips? Or if the battery gets too hot and something overheats, then that could cause freezing. I'm only going by what I've found on google.
Anyway, I found another thread (not sure why I didn't see it before) that suggests that it might be caused by bluetooth (bluez specifically) https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=115814, but it seems like that was more of a locking up problem than freezing completely. I've remove bluez and disabled bluetooth for now anyway (unfortunately can't remove it completely because I'm on Gnome Shell) and I'll run on battery for a good while and see if things freeze again.
EDIT: also followed this - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HDAPS in case the problem was caused by the hard drive being moved about.

  • X220 won't start up on battery power after BIOS update 1.24/1.25

This is a really strange issue.
I had been using my laptop with the oriiginal 1.10 (or whatever the very first one was) BIOS until yesterday with no problems. I head that there were some important fixes in the newer BIOS versions so I updated to 1.25. Everything seemed to be working fine until I went to work and turned on my laptop. It kept  crashing before Windows would load (after the post screen but before any of the windows screens. It just stays black for a long time and then flashes a BSOD and restarts). I tried downgrading to BIOS 1.24 but the problem persisted.
It turns out that it does this whenever I try to start the computer without it plugged into the ac adaptor. When it is plugged in it starts up as normal but when unplugged it won't boot into windows. Once Windows is loaded I can unplug it and nothing happens but I still can't restart it without plugging it back in
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is this a known issue? Any suggestions for what could be causing this strange behaviour?
If I can't get it figured out right away I will have to try to downgrade to the original BIOS version.

LOL! I just tried updating to 1.28 BIOS and had forgotten about the problem I had last time (when I tried updating to 1.24/1.25). I was just looking up what to do and came across this thread. I took me way too long to realize I was reading my own post from months ago! Boy am I slow.
I don't know if you are still subscribed to this thread Aamir but a hard reset is when you turn off the computer by holding down the power button until it turns off. Are you (were you) having the same issue with the newer BIOS versions as I am?
I think that the x220 is an amazing laptop spec-wise but are there ever a lot of driver/software problems! I keep trying to use the newer BIOS versions but I always have to revert to the original because Windows 7 won't start if I am on battery power (so basically anytime that I am not at home). I just bought a mSATA SSD (which is why I tried to use the newest firmware, I heard that older ones don't support them) and though the BIOS recongizes it, now Windows won't start if the SSD is installed! There is not much use in having a laptop with lots of ports and expansion options if it doesn't work when you use them!

  • Macbook works very slow and consumes a lot of battery power when closed

    Hi@all
I hope someone of you can help me. My Mac crashed yesterday. I got a warning saying "there was a problem, your Mac will reboot" (I didn't get the exact words because it vanished quite fast and the MacBook rebooted itself). Since then my Mac is working very slow and freezes every few minutes. I looked at the CPU usage but this is always under 25% so there shouldn't be a programm that causes this problem.
    In addition:
When I close it, it seems to go to sleep mode normally but is still consuming quite high amounts of battery power and get's warm. When I work with it the temperature stays normal.
I have a MacBook Pro (mid 2012) with 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 running with Mavericks.
It would be great if someone has an idea what could cause this kind of problems.
Thanks a lot in advance for your suggestions :-)

    sternblume,
for the high energy consumption in sleep mode, you could try resetting its System Management Controller.
For the slow working and freezing, you can try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode.

  • Crashing and Battery Reporting

I've been having problems with my iPhone since iOS4, starting with 4.0, my phone started dieing when it was reporting 40% battery (and I had only used it enough for it to reach 40%). I upgraded to 4.0.1 this past week with a fresh restore), and that didn't seem to solve the issue (so I restored fresh again). Today I was browsing the app store, and the whole OS crashed with 50% battery. The phone started going into a restart loop, crashing the moment I would try to put in my code to unlock the screen. After about 7 reboots, the phone now says it has no battery power left and has to be plugged in. Anyone else experience anything like this? Anyone have any help? I'm thinking of going shopping for a brand new Android phone this weekend =/

i have this same problem! its so annoying i want a new phone too! ive dropped this iphone a bunch though i thought maybe that was the problem! but apparently this has happened to a bunch of people

  • PowerBook battery calibration - reserve battery power - Dr. Battery

    Hello,
I have a new replacement battery from Dr. Battery for my 12" PowerBook G4.
I decided to calibrate the battery as described by Apple.  That is, from a full charge, keep working on battery power and keep doing so when it gets to near zero when you see the 'plug in to power or computer will go to sleep' message.  The reserve battery power will kick in and the computer will sleep after a few minutes; you'll see the twinkling light on the latch come on.  Shortly after that, charge the battery to full.
This is how my original Apple batteries used to work, always.  But the Dr. Battery battery simply crashed or shut down my PowerBook soon after the 'plug in to power or computer will go to sleep' -- the laptop couldn't/didn't go to sleep.  What's more, when I restarted it, the date had reset to 1-1-1971.  Does this mean that a Dr. Battery battery cannot store reserve battery power?  Is there some way to fix it?
The strange thing is that the first time I calibrated in this way with this new battery in the first week of January, it *did* work like it should.
    Thanks for any info.

The reason the time and other Prameter RAM settings were altered is because the G4 "12" Powerbook does not have a separate PRAM battery to maintain these values. Instead it uses a small capacitor which will maintain the PRAM settings only for a short time such as when changing a battery. The battery evidently spent it's charge when your PowerBook shut down.
I use a neat utility named coconutBattery to monitor battery status.

  • Crashing when battery 2/3 used

I have been experiencing some crashes when on battery power. I'm using a MacBook Pro. When the screen goes blank I expect it is just the battery loosing power. When I plug it back into main power it does not wake but needs to be restarted. Very unusual. Any ideas?
I really am trying to avoid reinstalling the OS again.

I too am having this problem, it generally happen around 35%. it started when i updated to 10.5.3, the install wak abnormal and then this problem started to happen. i hoped that the 10.5.4 would solve it, but no such luck.
my system doesn't give me any warning, the running on reserve power notice is nowhere to be found!!!!!
what is going on? how do we fix this?
    thanks

  • Twice experienced an unusual problem with my iPod touch 5th generation running iOS 8.0: crashes and disables power up. HOME and POWER pressed together to reset.

iPod touch 5th generation running iOS 8.0. iOS crashed twice, disabling power up. The only recovery was pressing and holding the home and power buttons together for several seconds. The iPod touch then went into restore mode. I've never experienced, heard or read of an iOS crash preventing normal power up: device has known battery charge, does not respond to pressing power button or connecting to AC charger.

    That happens some times. Try:

  • T61p freezes randomly when on Battery Power

I recently got my new T61p and i'm absolutely loving it. However, randomly (and only when the laptop is not plugged in to AC power) the system will hang on certain tasks, usually web surfing since thats what I'm usually doing, and I'll have to do a hard reboot. Consequently, internet explorer and mozilla firefox tend to freeze sometimes when I'm on battery power. When I'm plugged into AC power everything runs perfectly.
According to this website http://www.utheguru.com/lenovo-ibm-t41-random-crash, this guy had similar problems with his t41. I have all the latest versions of power management and updated all drivers and patched vista. Any ideas on what to do? I don't want to uninstall power management b/c its so useful
edit: I use the 'Energy Star' profile for my power setting
another edit: Apparently it is to do with the Intel turbo memory. i'll try the solutions in this post and give u my progress: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=51908

I got my T61p last Friday.  I'm having the same issues after applying all patches and driver updates.  I can run fine on AC power, but as soon as I unplug the machine, the screen goes blank and I have to do a hard reboot.  I have not been using Turbo Memory.  For a few days it worked just fine, but then the problem started up again yesterday.  I think it has something to do with the GPU.

  • "System must restart" on battery power

    Hi all,
Recently I've noticed an issue that I just now was able to find some consistency to on my MBP. Whenever I'm on battery power, in under 5 minutes of unplugging, the screen will fade from top to bottom to a dark color and I get a message telling me I need to restart. The computer is less then 8 months old, so I doubt its a bad battery (During the USGP a couple weeks ago it was fine!). Any suggestions on what's happening? It will crash whether 10 or no applications are open.
On a related note, how do I see what the error report says? On every restart I get a message where I can Report or OK, I ALWAYS click Report but get nothing afterwards.
    Thanks your help!

Okay, here is the latest one. I'm unsure about what I'm looking at, so if someone could decode it for me I'd appreciate it.

  • MBP running out of battery power before sleeping - Help!

    Hi
My MacBook Pro has been running out of battery power before the memory-saving sleep mode kicks in, so it dies with a little click of the HD. It's not a hibernation state as when I reattach the power supply it boots up a new session.
I've noticed this since upgrading to Snow Leopard last year, but put it down to an old battery that had 45% charge and wasn't powering the MBP properly. I now have a replacement A1175 5600mAh battery which is giving me 2-3hrs usage (which I'm pleased at), but now it still dies before sleeping!
I have tried to cycle the new battery, but can't. I have reset the SMC several times, with no effect.
I used to cycle the battery every week or two, running it down until it would no longer wake from sleep, recharge overnight etc, but now I can't do this because it will die before sleeping!
I've read quite a few articles over the net about this issue, but there seems like no cure. It's really annoying me now as I frequently work on the move and a dying MBP could potentially be disastrous.
Can anyone shed some light on this issue? Is there something I haven't tried yet? I think it's a late '06 MBP.

If you are not getting a warning, then there is something amiss with your battery. If a SMC reset and calibration does not fix the problem, then you may need to make an appointment at the genius bar and arrange to have your battery tested.
My old battery started doing the same thing--shutting down without warning. I replaced it, and the replacement battery started doing the exact same thing. I then returned the replacement, and the next replacement battery behaves in a normal fashion.
My first battery was worn out. My second battery was defective. My third battery is good.
Your battery should still be under warranty. Go back to where you got it and show them what it is doing and see if you can get a replacement.
    Good luck!
