Crashes & corrupted imports in Aperture; reinstall?
I have a MacBook Pro that had Aperture preinstalled when I bought it 2 years ago. I recently upgraded to Lion 10.7.5 and Aperture version 3.4.1 after having multiple crashes, but the crashes continued to happen. They happened usually (but not always) when I was using the loupe to inspect images for focus quality. I have repaired the library (after each crash) and also rebuilt the library. I was advised by a tech at the local Apple Store to create a brand new library with all new images and work with it for a while. If it did not crash, that might suggest my old library (or files within the library) was damaged or corrupted in some way. So I created a new library with 4 new projects. Aperture has not yet crashed, but now I am seeing lots of errors on imports from my SD cards. Some files cannot be imported and are put directly into Aperture trash. Others are marked with a badge that indicates the "referenced" originals are missing, but I don't use referenced files, only managed ones. The badges seem to be appearing on different photos each time I launch Aperture. So now I am thinking I should reinstall the software -- but since it came preinstalled, I don't have a CD or App Store purchase. How do I reinstall it?
If it had SL installed when you bought it its a bit more complicated then. Are you sure you did not get a DVD of Aperture? You should have. Did you at least get a serial number for the application? If you have a serial number you can download the application and use your serial number to unlock it. If you did not get either of those you will have to contact Apple to try and get the application.
What you describe is a kernel panic. Very rare for a single application to cause this. Did the crashes only start happening since you installed Lion? If so did they start right away or after some time?
Creating a new user as I wrote will possibly indicate where the problem lies. If the new user account runs OK then the problem is in something in your current user environment and would lead us in one direction. If the problem continues to occur with the new user then it would lead us in another direction. Again this is just a troubleshooting step I'm not suggesting you permanently run as the new user.
Looking back at your first post I see you've had the machine in to an Apple Store already. The best thing for you right now might be to continue working with them. I'd also bring up the fact that Aperture came installed on your system when you bought it and you didn't receive a DVD or serial number (assuming those are both true) and that you were entitled to them and you want them for backup purposes.

Aperture crashes when importing images after Montain Lion upgrade
Hello all,
I upgraded recently my MacBook to Montin Lion. Since this upgrade, Aperture is craching everytime I import pictures (jpeg). Aperture imports 10-20 images then crashes.
I have read all the communities discussions and tried all the soutions without success (delete raw pset, reinstall Aperture, reinstall Mountain Lion, rebuild library,...)
Any other ideas ?

Aperture crashes while importing from Canon Eos 5D
as from today aperture crashes while importing RAW pictures directly from my Canon eos 5D. did not have this problem before. after restarting aperture trys to recover the 4 or 5 imported pictures and then crashes again. As i'm on holyday and not having the original aperture DVD i can not reinstall aperture. Using iphoto is no problem, but importing the same pictures from iphoto into aperture results in crashing. anyone knows about this?
HugoBefore 10.5 came out, there were lots of rumors from fairly reliable websites about 10.4.11 imminent releases. In fact, plenty of us were hoping it would come out before 10.5, and with the expanded list of supported RAWs. But it's been over a week since 10.5, and there's no update from any of those rumor sites on 10.4.11. So, who knows...
I can definitely your frustration. But 10.5 is probably a worthwhile upgrade for most Mac users. Unless there's specific reasons (like there's a software you use that's known to be incompatible), you may want to upgrade now.
I am very happy with 10.5, and the the 40D RAW files look good on Aperture. No sRAW support though, which you may already know.

Having some import problems with Aperture and would be grateful for advice.
Aperture works fine except at import from SD cards. The photos import just fine and then I get a message asking if I want to delete the imported images from the SD card and eject the card. This is where the crash happens. Aperture quits, the images are not deleted from the card and the card is not ejected. This happens with all my SD cards. I have reformated the cards but this hasn't helped.
Any advice or information gratefully received.There are several reports recently on Aperture crashing after importing images, when the option "delete images" is chosen.
Send a bug report to Apple, when the crash occurs, and - for the time being - refrain from deleting the images from the card this way, until this bug has been fixed. It is much safer anyway, to delete the images in the camera and not to let applications delete from the card and to wait with deleting from the card, until you have checked that the images imported correctly.

My HDD crashed and I had to reinstall my boot and programmes on a new HDD. I managed to recover my library.itl. How can i import it with the new version of itunes? When i try imprt playlist, it replies that it is not a validly exported file.
It should be like the very first time you synced your phone with I-Tunes. It will notice you haven't synced before and just copy everything from your phone into I-Tunes. It shouldn't delete anything from the phone, at least it never has for me. It just puts a copy of everything into I-Tunes and even if you delete an app for example from your phone and you decide you want it back later, you can just go back into I-Tunes and copy it back over. Hope this helps.

I'd run a maintenace app like Onyx or Cocktail and restart the Mac before installing it. -

I've been using Aperture for around 6 months on a Mac Pro (2x 2.66) and it regularly crashes when importing images. I shoot on a Nikon D2x & D200 and import around 1500 images at at time. It sometimes helps if I split the import into smaller batches (<300) but even then I still have problems. When I say crash, I mean the whole system hangs & nothing, not even force quit works. I have to re-start the computer & when I do so, it will crash again when I try to open the project I was importing at the time.
(I've read that importing directly form a CF card can cause problems, so only import images that are in a folder on the desktop)
The only thing I can then do is to delete the project & start again (a side question on deleting the project: Why when I restart aperture does it appear again? - it only properly deletes if I re-build my entire library).
Help!I've been using Aperture for about a year and only started having problems about a week ago. It doesn't completely crash, but the screen suddenly turns black and takes about a minute to come back up with my username and password. It will run for a few minutes, then do the same thing again. I realized just this evening that it will do it even when I'm not importing. It's really frustrating.

Aperture Crashes While importing iPhoto 11

I hope someone can help as I'm getting desperate. I have spent hours on the phone with Apple tech support to no avail.
I have an iPhoto library of 45K photos that I am attempting to import to Aperture 3. However, Aperture repeatedly crashes before completing the import. This happens at different times in the import (sometimes after importing 100 or so events, other times >300 events, but it never makes it to the end.
So far, I have tried the following (each time into a new Aperture Library):
1. Duplicated and rebuilt the iPhoto library with command-option (crashed).
2. Shift opened Aperture to disable background processing (still crashed).
3. I tried importing a few events at a time, but with 45K photos that required the patience of job which unfortunately I do not have.
I am running on Aperture 3.1.1, iPhoto 11 (ver 9.1.1), OSX 10.6.5, on a 2.66 Quad Core Xeon MacPro with 8 GB ram and 6 TB hard drive space.I figured out a "work-around" and I was able to import my iPhoto Library into Aperture. But in order to do it, I had to break up the iPhoto Library and import year-by-year, with each year going into a different Aperture Library. Most of the years imported without an issue, but there was 1 set that crashed a couple of times, so I assume that that's where the problem was.
At any rate, now my iPhoto Library is entirely converted to Aperture, but in 6 different Aperture Libraries with all the photos residing within the Aperture Libraries themselves. Is there a way now to consolidate them into 1 Aperture Library? Or do I have to create a 7th Aperture Library and import them in 1 by 1?

Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a new MacBook pro with Retina display, to better manage Aperture and Photoshop. I took the advice of the genius (and after spending all night messing with permissions, etc.), opted out of using Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant and decided to transfer my files manually (as the two systems weren't merging properly the first time -- it was a giant mess). Long story short, I tried to transfer everything from my previous MacBook (operating on 10.5.8 with Aperture 1), and Aperture 3 couldn't handle it. It was crashing, and crashing so badly that NO button could be activated in the program (I FINALLY got Aperture working by disabling previews, and by moving from a managed library to a referenced library).
I initially dragged and dropped all photos from my previous MacBook to my external, and imported. I obviously lost folders, edit history and any other information that I needed to know what edits had been done on the file. Additionally, any movie that had been imported into Aperture was corrupt (the file was not transferring over correctly). I searched and searched for different methods, and finally found that I could export each project from my original MacBook as a "Library" and consolidate masters, or not, etc. I took the time and did this for each project. When I went to import these into Aperture 3, it said I was not able to because the libraries were from a previous version of Aperture.
Is there any way to bypass this? Or another way to transfer my projects? I understand I won't be able to do this for my entire library... but I'm wondering if there's any way to transfer my changes made, projects and details from Aperture 1 to Aperture 3? (and for those who might pose upgrading my original MacBook as an option, I cannot. It's too old. I think the best I could uprade to is Aperture 2, IF i can update the OS. Though, I definitely don't think I should be forced to do that since I've aleady re-invested in a new computer, AND had to re-buy Aperture for the new one.
Any/all advice is VERY much appreciated, as I really want to move forward and FINALLY start appreciating this program and computer (i.e. my investment) and move forward business wise. Thank you!Hi Jack,
Thanks for responding (as it seems as though no one else has been able to provide any insight as of yet)! Not sure if you saw my recent post, but the version of Aperture on the 2008 MacBook has been upgraded to 3.1.2 (not sure how; I bought it in 2009, but only have OS X 10.5.8... which apparently can't house 3.1.2 of Aperture, but hey, like many other anomalies i'm encountering, I'm no longer surprised!). I am unable to upgrade it any further, as it warns me that my OS X does not fit the requirements. I exported the projects as libraries; however, like I posted before, apparently these are from too old of a version for the new Aperture (3.3.1) to handle and import.
It's getting to the point where I'd almost pay to upgrade the OS X on my previous MacBook (10.5.8) to something newer in order to THEN update Aperture to a newer version; however, my previous MacBook simply cannot handle this (the specs are awful -- hence my decision to save up and upgrade to the newest MBP with Retina).
I've spent hours upon hours transferring files, libraries as projects, previews, versions, even masters (though, apparently some of them aren't accessible?) with no luck. I've rebuilt the library and reprocessed everything. And this is all after having to return one MBP already since Aperture 3.3.1 is glitch-y as it is, and froze everything for having a "managed library". So, now that I know that I have to deal with a referenced library in Aperture... I just need to actually transfer my previous library to my new one (hopefully WITH adjustments since these are years worth of photos and work).
Again, any help is appreciated. I've lost enough sleep, time, and vision health over this at this point.
Also, I know Migration Assistant is an option, I was told that it wouldn't work properly anyway because of the different operating systems, and the potential for problems. -
Crashes while importing TIFFs. Also, how to import directly into an album?
Just got Aperture last night in the mail. Upgraded to 1.1.1.
I have about 250 CDs with TIFF images that I've created over the years. The TIFF files were created by a Nikon film scanner. Some of those images were later re-touched and re-saved using Photoshop.
In any event, I started importing all those CDs into Aperture to consolidate all my photographs in one place. On the first CD, Aperture crashed unexpectedly for no reason. The Aperture database would also get corrupted and I would have to delete it, and start from scratch.
Here's what I discovered. If I wait for Aperture to generate a thumbnail of all the images in the CD before I click on the "Import All" button, there are four images in the CD for which Aperture does not generate a thumbnail. Furthermore, if I tried to import the same CD into iPhoto, all files but those four would get imported. At least iPhoto doesn't crash, and after the import is finished it would tell me that four photographs could not be imported because the format was not recognized. The interesting thing is that Photoshop can open every single file on the CD (again, all of them are TIFF images)
So my (painful) workaround is to import all my CDs into iPhoto first, and then import into Aperture from iPhoto, which works very well. That way the Aperture repository doesn't get corrupted.
So, question 1: does anybody know if there's a special setting in Aperture that would stop it from crashing and gracefuly skip over any photographs that it can't recognize?
Question 2: I want to import every single CD into its own album so I later know what CD I can find the image on. Aperture seems to import always onto the project, not the album. Is there a way around this?
When I import into iPhoto, I create an empty album and then drag the files from the CD onto that album. If I then import the iPhoto album into Aperture, Aperture automatically creates an album, which is nice. I'd love to do the same but with iPhoto out of the picture (excuse the pun). That would speed up the import process tremendously.

1. You can indeed create an album under a Project in advance and Import direct to that. One Album per CD? Works fine. Just point the Import Arrow at the Album. NOTE: the Masters are actually held in the Project (this is true across Aperture) and Pointers are held in the Album .... but the effect is of Albums with photos > Project containing all the photos.
2. These TIF files are not corrupt, if Photoshop or iPhoto opens them. This has got to be an Aperture bug and I have the same issues with TIF's. Created a thread about it, so I hope the Aperture development team did read it (please, please, please). You could convert in Photoshop to .PSD vs. resaving (unless this is what you did) as I haven't noted this problem with .PSD files -

This is a brand new Aperture 2.1 install on a new (received Sunday 1st June 2008) iMac 3.06GHz Dual Core, 4GB Memory, NVidia 512MB (MacOS X 10.5.3). I imported 40GB of photos - my first import session, left to run overnight.
When trying to use this morning, Aperture screens were corrupt and it refused to shut down. I had to power off then boot back into Mac OS X. When I restarted Aperture it worked, but it still seemed to have problems taking over the machine - eg, I wasn't able to send mail from Gmail within VMWare Fusion until I closed down Aperture. I never have problems with VMWare Fusion.
I've seen a post elsewhere on the forums suggesting this may be related to 10.5.3. Has anyone seen this in Aperture on 10.5.3 or other versions of MacOS?Calm down, reinstall, try again

ITunes crashes when Importing music from CD
Hi,
Im having trouble importing CD's using itunes. The process begins and then midway through the first track i get an error message saying that itunes need to close. I have run the CD diagnostics, but dont really understand what they mean. If anyone can offer any ideas on how to fix this it would be very gratefully recieved.

Iphoto crashes when importing or exporting
I try to solve this for a longtime on the is Mac. Nothing works, reinstall of iphoto 08 from backup, disc, creating new library etc. iphoto still crashes when importing or exporting images. edit etc works fine for images already imported. iphoto also crashes when trying to rebuild library with iphoto manager. First time ever that I had such a hideous problem with Apple software. Please advice.

Can you create a new empty library: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
If so, try and import a few pics to this new Library and see if you can avoid crashes.

My desktop crashed and I had to reinstall itunes software. My iphone has all my apps with their data, contacts, photos, videos & music. How can I import all of the information and data on my iphone into itunes? I downloaded one app that is a to-do-list but it indicates that if I sync with my iphone I will lose all data on my iphone and it will be replaced with the data on itunes. I do not want to lose my data! I have a lot of information and I cannot understand why Apple would not have a way to restore my data from my iphone to my itunes. PLEASE HELP!
It should be like the very first time you synced your phone with I-Tunes. It will notice you haven't synced before and just copy everything from your phone into I-Tunes. It shouldn't delete anything from the phone, at least it never has for me. It just puts a copy of everything into I-Tunes and even if you delete an app for example from your phone and you decide you want it back later, you can just go back into I-Tunes and copy it back over. Hope this helps.

Picture - broken/crash after Import
Hello, i have a Problem with my new MacBook Pro (NOT Retina) Mountain Lion and Aperture 3.3.2:
when i Import RAW Files fom a card reader some of the Pictures Crashes/break after Import (while Aperture is reading the JPG Infos). The Data File is distroyed.
(This problem is NOT with my MacPro2008 Mountain Lion and Aperture 3.3.2)

Thank you.Well, I did the third tape now with some breaks during importing. Each time I dragged all clips into timeline and saved the project. This worked, but each break will result in a short interruption that is not as the original tape was. I also would prefer to let the importing work during times I am not sitting at the computer, so I am still looking how to solve that problem.
Maybe it just is that iMovie can not handle more then 250 clips in the clip-list?
I know that the timeline handles more then that, because I was importing 2x60 minutes tapes before, with well over 300 clips in timeline.
