Crashing Airport Express (multiple units)

Several (ten or so) Airport Express base stations
Many (All?) Express base stations seem to crash in the sense that computers connected to them lose internet connection. Some computers show a phantom signal (bars) in the Airport menulet(icon in the top right of the menubar) that gets them nothing in the way of internet, others simply cannot join the network no matter how close to the Airport they get (the computers are mostly laptops, and mostly Macs). Also the light on the base stations stays solid green like they are still OK, even when this is at its worst (ie no internet for you!).
All Airport Expresses have firmware 6.3 so far as I know, and I even recommended putting one on a UPS to eliminate power fluctuations as a potential problem.
Suggestions welcome.
Possible conflicts:
3rd party wired router hooked up via cable to WAN port
Other Airport Express barely (weak signal) in range of first
Incompatible PC wireless cards
Powermac G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have experienced about the same problem with 2 AE´s.
Never had the problem before upgrading to the multiple speaker
option that came with one of thr itunes upgrades. But then I could only play one at a time, the idea is great but its no fun if the music stops every few minutes
Have you been able to fix your problem ?

Why do I need to reset my Airport Express multiple times a day?

I purchased an Airport Express (AE) in 2008. Ocassionaly since I've owned the device, I've had a problem connecting to it via iPod touch, iPhone, Macbook Pro, Macbook, etc. I would see the AE in my wifi router list, I just couldn't connect to it. I simple reboot always seemed to fix the problem. As time has passed, I found myself having to reboot it more and more often. Within the past few months, it seems to be a daily occurance. Within the past couple weeks, I've had to reboot it multiple times a day. I have also performed a facory reset via the button and via airport utility - neither seem to affect the issue.
I like the AE for the simple fact that it has AirTunes abilities, this is quite frankly the only reason I have it. I would like to replace it, but I fear another unit would have similar issues.
Is anyone else having these same problems on a 2+ year old AirPort Express? if so, is there a fix action? thanks.

Hi, I'm having the same problem and have to reboot my Airport Express at least once a day. It is extremely frustrating.

Airport Express/Multiple Speakers/Drop Outs

Question -- I have a wireless network at home -- a Linksys wireless router which I use to connect my Dell laptop and my powerbook to the internet. I have two airport express stations ... one for my living room stereo, and one for kitchen speakers. Streaming itunes to one set of speakers works fine, but when I stream to both sets of speakers I get constant hiccups and sound drops during the playback. Any thoughts/suggestions how to fix this problem?

I had this problem. It was because I had interference (ie poor reception to ONE of the airport express units). When the one would cut out they BOTH would cut out. It was really annoying. You can check if this is your problem by placing both of the airport express right near your router (ie in the same room) and see if you get the dropping out (you shouldn't).
My solution was finally only solved by buying a new router and setting up a WDS network. I got a linksys WRT54GL and use the DD-WRT firmware. There are lots of instructions on the net on how to set this up. Then each airport express acts as a repeater. They seem to support each other, and the result for me was that I got wireless coverage EVERYWHERE in my house, and the music stream stopped dropping out.
Also with the DD-WRT firmware you can change the xmit power of the router (and increase it!) to improve coverage.

Airport Express - Multiple speakers

I have 3 airport express connected to 3 different stereo systems. When I use only one speaker, everything is ok. When I use 2 speakers, the signal stops for 2 seconds about every minute. When I use 3 speakers, signal stops for 2 seconds very frequently.
On "advanced settings" of iTunes the streaming buffer is "large".
Any idea to solve the problem ?

Airport express multiple profiles and Lion.

Hi. I have an old export express that allowed me to use multiple profiles. Having learned that Airport Utility 6.0 did not allow for many configuration changes I downloaded and istalled as suggested the old 5.6 version for Lion (had to extract the package because of the installation incompatibility with Lion). However, even in Airport Utility 5.6 I can't find the profiles tab or selector. Any ideas?

Yes, unless you have another device handy on the road with a 5.x version of AirPort Utility installed.

No, you must manually "switch" to the profile that you want to use at any given time.

Can't install AirPort Express, and unit is flashing amber

I've just bought an Airport Express unit, with the aim of playing iTunes remotely (I have a separate wireless connection to the net). I have two problems:
1) When I try to install the Airport Express software provided, the setup tells me that I have a later version of iTunes and cannot install Airport Express. Does that mean iTunes v7.0 (which I am using) already contains Airport Express?
2)My Airport Express unit is flashing amber. Resetting the unit makes no difference. I suspect this is due to the problem of 1) but am really stuck on how to progress!

When I open the AirPort Utility.app, a window opens called AirPort Utility, the twirly/stopwatch icon goes into motion next to the words"Discovering Base Stations." After this happens for some seconds, these words appear...
"AirPort Utility was unable to find any AirPort base stations. Please make sure the AirPort base station you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, and then click rescan to try again."
My express is plugged in five feet from my computer. What to do....?

Airport Express + Multiple Computers

I just have a really simple question I can't seem to find the answer to on apple.com. If I have a Time Capsule with an Airport Express connected to it connected to a stereo through an optical cable, can two computers connect to the airport express through the time capsule? I don't mean sending music simultaneously but if one isn't using the external speakers can the another?
Also my buddy has a Vista laptop, can he connect to the airport express through itunes for windows in order to steam music like i can with my mac?

Airport express multiple configuration and iOS utility

Just wondering if there is a way to toggle configs on iOS 5 devices iPad :iPhones with the new airport utility?
Reason : I use it as an audio device to my sound system , but when I travel ( hotel , offices , etc) it becomes my own hotspot while cconfiged as a router from the stored configs on the device .., But I have to use my MBP !
Or change it before I leave ....

Airport Express Multiple Uses, Airport Express Multiple Uses

Can you have one Airport Express for several uses? I have mine extending the network but if I plugged it into the stereo would I be able to use AirTunes too?

It all depends on the type of audio imputs that your amplifer is using.
The Express can provide an optical digital signal through a standard Toslink cable, or an analog signal. The jack on the AirPort Express accepts a 3.5 mm stereo mini plug.
If you are not sure which cable to get, take a picture of the back of your amplifer on your camera phone and take an AirPort Express to a Radio Shack, Best Buy, or other electronics superstore. They will have what you need.

I have a huge house and need wifi all over. Theres one base extreme connected to the modem and an airport express wirelessly exteding the network. In my farthest room, I dont have good signal so can I buy another express to extend the already extending express?

This configuration can work, but it would have to be configured as a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) and not as an 'extended' network. The reason is because the 802.11n version of an extended network works more like a wheel. That is, the extended base station would be at the hub of this wheel and each extending base station would be on a spoke of that wheel. What you appear to want is a linear combination of base stations and this was only available in the older 802.11g WDS network.
Unfortunately, a WDS network has two major disadvantages: 1) It can only operate in the 802.11g mode which would, effectively, negate the advantage of your 802.11n base stations, and 2) For each base station added in a WDS, the overall wireless bandwidth (speed) would be cut in half.
Another option would be if your home is pre-wired for Ethernet, you could configure a roaming network which would be superior to both.

Airport Express Multiple Use

Hi, I have an Airport Express (upstairs) which connects wirelessly currently to my BT homehub (downstairs) and I currently use the Airport Express to provide me with Airplay use of a speaker system to wirelessly play music using my iOS device.
I am looking at replacing the BT Homehub with an Airport Extreme.
My question is this:
Is it possible for the Airport Express to be used for both Extending the Wifi range from the Airport Extreme AND to use it for Airplay functionality, or am I restricted to using it for one function only?

The Express will perform both functions simultaneously. In addition, you could add a remote printer to the USB port on the Express if you wanted to do so.

Itunes, Airport Express, Multiple Speakers... can't play both at same time

Set up 2 aiport express units with speakers attached. Connected to my wi fi no problem and can play through either speaker... but can't play through both at the same time? Any suggestions gratefully received . Thanks

ok, was being thick. In the multiple speakers box in itunes I need to drag and resize the box so that I could see all the speakers I have attached, now everything is working fine.... and I'm loving it!
Would be nice if the multiple speaker box automatically resized to show everything attached.... but I'm bound to say that aren't I lol.

Airport Express multiple base detection

I have updated the firmware and Itunes now gives me the option of checking the speaker boxes. Every time I check the additional AP Express base it cuts the other one off.
What am I doing wrong?
Also I have to choose to either use an AP express base or the Linksys but it won't let both run together!

Not all 3rd party routers are compatible with Airport Extreme and Express.
Depending on what type of Network you are trying to set up,
WDS, Client mode or what.

You may simply need to disable the feature of assigning IP's on the Express.
Both Routers can't be set to assign IP's,there are 2 Linksys (WRT54G and WRT54GS [not version 5]) that are known to work.

How to use more than one airport express with multiple speakers

I have 2 Airport Express. Prior to the multiple speaker enhansement I changed spekers by changing the wireless network. Each of the Airports is recognised as a wirelss network. Is there any way I can make my computer and itunes to see all of my Airports so I can use the Multiple Speaker function for both of my Airports at the same time withour having to change wireless network.

You need to have a single wireless network.
If you con't have a wireless router, then you will need to configure one of the Airport Express (AX) units to join the existing wireless network of the other AX.

Has anyone connected a scanner to the AirPort Express unit?

I have an AirPort express wireless unit right now running as a range extender. I have not connected a printer to it yet and I was wondering if the unit only allows printers or would a scanner or other similar USB device also work?
I am more curious right now, and simply wondering if anyone has been successful connecting a non-printer to that port.

That article does not exclude scanners in the list of devices that don't work.
A scanner is "close" to a printer. Certainly closer than a disk drive, and as Spok says, "There are always possibilities."
I was told that the AirPort Express device would not work with my LinkSys SRX200 and it works fine as a range extender.
I will first connect a printer to the USB port just to get my feet wet and after I get that working I will unplug it and connect my scanner to it and see what happens. The very worst thing would be that the world comes to an end.
Anyway, I will report back what happens. Certainly something should happen such as an error message or a driver error or some such thing or it might work.
Being a born hacker, telling me it won't work is music to my ears.
OK, maybe it won't work. But so far, nobody has told me why.
