Crashing Mac OS X and really slow start up

My Mac Book Pro with OS X 10.5.3 keeps rebooting.  I get a screen that states that the computer has run into a problem and must reboot.  When it reboots it takes a long time to start up.  After loggin in it asks to send a report to Apple about it crashing.  What can I do to prevent my computer from crashing.  During the times it has crashed I have had at most the following programs open: Safari, Mail.  So I am not doing strenuous computing.

Here is the most recent one.  There are 2 crashes one on the 9/11 and 9/15 plus 2 other panics.  Should I post all of those too?

There is nothing wrong with your Dell, it will work fine with any MacbookPro. I have been using Dell displays for over 12 years with many different Mac models. I have two 21" Ultra Sharp displays working side by side to design a Keynote presentation right now.
    The issue your having is with the way Keynote  takes control of the video output to both displays, it sends the presentation signal to one and the presenter display to the other, this is set up in;
    Keynote preferences > Presenter display.
If you want to show a wesite or another app on  either display,  use application switcher:
press the the  command key on the keyboard, then the tab key; a row of applications will show what applications are running, choose which one you want to show. Use command  > tab to return to Keynote.

If push comes to shove, create a bootable flash drive and completely wipe you hard disk and reinstall os x. But that means starting fresh, so save pictures and important files to a flash drive.

  • My brand new mac book pro runs really slow., My brand new mac book pro runs really slow.

I just bought a mac book pro a couple days ago. It was fine the first couple days, but now it runs really slow.

    what antivirus are you using?
that might be the one causing your issues - uninstall it and see what happens.
do not install any antivirus software in your Macbook Pro

  • My MBP really hot and really slow recently

    Hi,
My MBP has become really hot and noticably slower recently (within the last 4-5 months). Before I could keep it on my lap for hours watching video using VLC and run a bunch of other applications (like Safari, Firefox, iTERM, Nisus Writer Pro, TextMate, etc.) without it getting unbearable.
Now, even when it's nearly idle (running just Safari, with Quicksilver in the background) the temperature is around 130 deg. Fahrenheit, give or take 10 degrees. And the usually silent fans continuously give out an evil hiss.
The only changes I made to the MBP within that time are:
    1. Upgraded to 10.5.6
    2. Added growl (which I turned off for now)
    3. Purchased some software via MacHeist, which includes:
    acorn,
    appshelf
    boinxTV
    CroMag Ralley
    Espresso
    iSale
    Kinemac
    littlesnapper
    picturesque
    SousChef
    Hitlist
    Times
    Wire Tap Studio
    World of Goo, and
    eventbox
    4. Upgraded to Safari 4 beta
And that's about it. Safari seems very sluggish on the initial launch, giving me the spinning ball, and more often than not, it would freeze and I would have to force quit. But then again, the previous version crashed quite often too, but I seem to remember it to be pretty perky on launch.
The only things I run in the background and/or login items are:
    1. Font Agent's font activator
    2. Quicksilver
    3. iTunes Helper
    4. Stuffit's MagicMenu
    5. MenuCalendarClock iCal version
    6. Expandrive
    7. Little Snitch
    8. MacFuse
Also my wireless connection to the USB drive on my AEBS seem to have slowed a lot too. At one point, I was reading and writing to it at almost the same speed as if it were plugged directly into my MBP's USB port. Now, it's around regular ethernet speed (not fast ethernet, nor gigabit, just regular 11Mbps).
Anyone have any idea? I'm thinking of just reinstalling from the 10.5.2 DVD I have, but that means I have to backup everything and I know I'll lose something during the process, because I have a WD 320GB disk and have used it all up except for about 10GB. It's gonna take a good part of a day (or two) to do the complete reinstall.
Any help as to why my MBP's so sluggish and hot would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    S

Yes, you need more free space on your HDD, for sure. But...
Let's back up a minute. I just re-read your original post - 130 °F is NOT hot. That's barely warm. Most of us are used to looking at temps in Celsius (at least, I am). 130 °F = ~55 °C. My CPU is at 49 °C right now, 5 minutes after waking the machine up from an overnight sleep in a cool downstairs office. Normal MBP idling temps are in the mid 50s °C (the 130s °F), so you are most definitely not having a temperature issue. Running a heavy CPU load will push the temps into the 70-80 °C range (160-175 °F); fans normally don't spin up past idle speed until the CPU/GPU temps are in the 70s °C (your idle speed is 2000 rpm).
So, if the fans are making an 'evil hiss' that's not due to temperature.
To conclude - your initial issues were 1) really hot, 2) noticeably slower and 3) an evil hiss from the fans. So, #1 is a non-issue, since your temps are quite normal. #2 is most likely due to lack of HDD free space (you've run out of room for virtual memory and swap files). That leaves #3 - just how evil is that hiss? What fan speeds does your monitoring software (iStat Pro, for example) report?
Have you run the Apple Hardware Test? (Insert Install DVD 1 and reboot with the d key pressed.) That will check out your fans, sensors, etc.

I tried: cleaning computer and deleting files, also got rid of Bootcamp which I don't use Windows, ran MacKeeper, also removed all Login Items under accounts. It takes 1min 45 secs to get to the blue screen, and another minute to finally get all the icons in place.
    Help.

  • Whenever I turn off my Mac Pro, everything becomes really slow for hours. Help!

Whenever I turn off my Macbook Pro (mid 2012), everything becomes really slow, and it takes minutes to open a file. This happened a week ago when it told me to install osX again. But at that time, I repaired my mac, and it got to normal in a day, but this time its not. Help?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • My external hard drive goes in to constant access mode and really slows down my computer

I'm using an external hard drive for time machine.  After working for an hour or so the drive goes into a constant access mode and realy slows down my IMac.  I look at activity monitor and everything looks good, no high CPU usage or memory issues.  The only fix is to use the power button to shut down my IMac.  After restart it works fine for a while.
If I turn off time machine the problem seems to not happen.  I tried disk utility on the external hard drive and it says the dirve is fine.  I change out external drives and the problem still occures.  Any thoughts?

I didn't realize my profile stated otherwise.
Please check near the bottom of your original post above to see OS X (10.7.2).  You might want to update that to avoid confusion and save some time in the future.
OK, please take a deep breath.
Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme....likely because it is not reliable. You might want to review this Apple Support document to confirm:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2038
So, we are not going to be able to provide you with much assistance on that issue.
Some users seem to be able to make this work....some have some problems....and some (like me) who have tried this have nothing but problems.
Sorry, I can't help on this one, but maybe another user who has had better luck will post to provide his secrets.
The iTunes and iPhoto libraries and files are my only copies now.  I moved everything from my Macbook to the external then deleted the originals.
Not sure if you have thought about this.
If you deleted the "originals", then your only copy of your data is on one hard drive. You have no backups if the drive has a problem.
A minimum backup plan would be to have a copy of important data on two different drives. When....not if...one drive fails, you have the data on the "other" drive.
You have no "other" drive according to the information that you have provided.
Further.....Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point....you cannot know when.....Time Machine will pick up the change on your Mac and delete the iTunes and iPhoto data from your Time Machine backups.
The files might stay there a few months, or even longer. But, I have seen instances where the files were deleted within a week or two.
So my advice would be to only delete data from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

  • I have a mac 10.4 and won't start up, just a blank screen with the restricted icon appears

Last night I forced shut down on the computer because the colro wheel wouldn't let me do anything.
In the morning i turned it on normally from the  power button and it never started up.
    Just a blank screen, forever...
I tried the safe mode and nothing happened.
Also tried holding the shift key after boot up and the apple appeared, then the RESTRICTED ICON.
I tried holding the option key and nothing either.
Tries command, option +P+R and I got the same restricted icon!!!
I can't remember when it appeared the march kernel erro in a black screen and then nothing...
I don't have the installation cd.
    What can I do now?
Whatever I do I get the restricted icon.
I am at my witts end...
I know is an old mac, but can't afford a new one..and I have al of my work info and files there!
    (most was backed up though!...phew...)
THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP..

Tough without the Install disc, but some things to try...
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

  • Apple Ipod touch freezing up, turning on and off by itself and really slow!!!!

I have a Ipod touch 8GB and have been having problems with it like freezing up turning on and off by itself being really slow and just all around taking a mind of its own is there any idea what I could do i have tried everything like restoring and everything else.
What I dont understand is when it is sitting on my desk it turns on and off by itslef while sitting there.

Did you already try to set it uup as new device without using the latest backup?
How to back up your data and set up as a new device

  • My Mac Book Pro is really slow

Following are the specifications of my mac:
    Process 2.9Ghz Intel Core i7
    Memory 8GB 1600Mhz DDR3
    Software OS X 10.9.3
    HDD 750 GB
Inspite of decent specifications my mac is performing slow. Safari and VLC quits unexpectedly. My re boot time is way pass 60 seconds. Sometimes Finder gets stiuck and I am not able to operate the system.
I have cleanmymac2 installed but after repeated use nothing seems to work. I have also cleaned my dekstop and login items. But I dont see any solution. Please help.

"CleanMyMac" is a scam that purports to "clean up" "junk" files. What it really does is to corrupt the operating system and many applications.
The first thing you need to do is remove that software according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again. Then see below.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • My mac is suddenly running really slow framerate?

Processor: 2.9 Gz Intel Core i7
    Memory 8GB10 MHz DDR3
    Version: 10.7.5
Recently i've had some problems with my macbook pro, when i place the computer on my lap i usually do, any slight movement would cause this horrible sound to come out from the mac. It's similar to a fan hitting the surroundings, and it would settle down after i put my computer down. Then my computer suddenly kept redirecting me to websites like anchorfree and such, and i found out it was because of my Hot Spot Shield that i downloaded, so i deleted that. Which seems to have fixed the redirecting but now my computer is very slow. The framerate is slow, moving my cursor around the screen would look like the cursor is jumping around. Adjusting the volume would take forever. Trying to type would also take very long. None of these things would've happened let's say three days ago.
I checked my activity monitor an the top one would vary, but mostly it would be "Finder" at about 5.9 CPU and sometimes "mdworker".
Not to mention that my computer is very heated at the bottom. Feels like it's burning but there isn't much sound at the moment.
Any ways of fixing this framerate and lag issue? Am i infected with a virus or something? Thanks. I'm currently backing up some important files and right now evetyping i hard.

You may have more than one problem, but the "horrible sound" alone is reason to have the machine tested at an Apple Store or other authorized service center.

  • Really Slow Start-Up, force shut-down, only with one user....

Lets see. I've had this puppy since August of 2005. We've been through a lot together. Im sure this is apple telling me to buy a new computer BUT all I want is to make sure I do not lose ANYTHING of importance. THE PROBLEM:
So, I used my computer on Saturday, came home late on Sunday to check my e-mail. And I turned it on, logged into my Administrator account and go distracted, 30 minutes later the desktop hadn't fully loaded. The background picture came out, the tool bar from the little apple to the Help loaded, but my google notifier, airport and time and finder did not load. The application bar at the bottom loaded, but nothing happened if i moved the mouse over it. I had maybe 10 files and 4 folders on the desktop, so i tried moving them. I logged into another account to delete stuff I didnt need. It got a little better. I was able to actually move the folders into the HD icon on the desktop, and TRIED to take the picture off the desktop, but I ended up having to go to bed after hours of trying to fix it.
I would have copied everything to disks, but a few months ago my CD/DVD ROM failed. Well, I never got it looked at because i've been in transition to LA. But it just spits any disk that is put in.
I thought maybe I have too much stuff on the HD, causing it to be slow, but its not even 1/2 full. So that really can't be it.
I have 2 accounts on my iBook. One is mine, the Administrator and the second is the Guest account for anyone borrowing my computer. I tried logging into the Guest account and it works perfectly. No problems with it at all. I am sooooo confused as to why overnight there is another problem with my computer. I have an appt with a Genius on Thursday, I do have my OSX Install Disks. I just found them!!
Any thoughts or suggestions GREATLY appreciated.

I've been trying to help another individual with an issue similar to yours. That case is a little less extreme--only certain applications cause trouble, not the whole works.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1862986
See if any of that helps you. If not, it's probably best to ask the Apple experts when you go see them--my final idea is to erase and install the OS, which isn't an option for you since the CD/DVD drive doesn't work.

  • Re: Satellite P300 - POST screen blank on booting up and very slow start up

    Hi,
I have a laptop Satellite P300. On booting up vista the microsoft logo comes up and then when the POST screen should be showing me what the bios is checking the screen is blank.
It remains blank for 5 to 10 mins then the pointer appears then it finally goes to the desktop.
I suspect the bios is hanging on something but I can't see cos the screen is blank. I suspect there is a setting somewhere. I can enter the bios but can't find anything in there.
Also regards to the extremely slow boot, I have disabled nearly all the start up programs but it has made no difference.
    Has anyone any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi
Everything runs slowly but finally the Windows OS boots up properly. Right?
Hmm. you can access the BIOS press F2 immediately after power button has been pressed.
This should allow you to access the BIOS. There you should press F9 to set the BIOS to default settings. Save the changes and reboot the unit again.
Additionally I would recommend checking the HDD. You could use a tool called Drive Fitness Test. This tool can be downloaded for free (google for that).
By the way; did you try to recover the notebook using recover disk?
Maybe you should try this but note; this would format the HDD so backup the date before starting recovery.
