Crashing of iPhoto
All of sudden my iPhoto started crashing while I was working on a book layout that I have been working on for awhile. It happens when I start moving the photos around. I have version 5.0.4 and about 1500 photos in my library. I have tried removing preferences and restrarting program and computer. That does not seem to work. Can anyone help me?
Thank you!
Marcie
Thank you for your suggestion. I did try everything, however, nothing seemed to make a difference. Somehow, I stumbled on a solution that does seem to work for me. When working in my Book, occasionally I would drag a photo from the book back up to the unused photo window. Many times iPhoto would crash on me. I started using the delete key in the book to remove a photo (it just puts it back up in the unused window) and, lo and behold, it has not crashed on me since I started handling it that way. A few times I did forget to use the delete and did a drag, iPhoto crashed on me. As I said I stumbled on this solution, it works for me, hopefully it may work for someone else who has this problem.

I have an iMac which I've upgraded to Yosemite. then I experienced a crash on iPhoto and needed to restore the entire (135 GB) iPhoto library through Time machine. Now I can see the iPhoto library through finder but can't move them to iphoto
Can you help me please? thanks so much!Try the following on your library:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 - select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2: Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired. -
I've lost my photos (crashed hdd, iPhoto library on Time Machine corrupt too). Is there a way to create a picture from the thumbnail that remains in iPhoto? The quality is obviously poor, but better than nothing.
Time machine should have a good copy - how are you determining that it is corrupt
If you want the thumbnails as photos right click on the iPhoto library and make a copy of the data folder and then import it into a new iPhoto library - it contains your thumbnails

IDVD crash when iPhoto exports slideshow
My G5 1.8 Ghz crashes when iPhoto exports slideshow. Help!
Drag both these to the trash and restart your mac:
com.apple.iDvd.plist
com.apple.iPhoto.plist
Then Repair Permissions from apple's disc utilities.
Run apple's software updater but do not install just yet. Just post back and let us know if apple system pref / software updater sees any required updates. (Pay close attention to QT as well).
Hope this helps but if not come on back.

My mac is slow, crashes if iPhoto is opened, doesn't boot sometimes
Hello.
In the last time, my MacBook Pro is very slow and crashes sometimes if I open iPhoto or some other programs.
Sometimes, there comes a black display with some thin white lines and then I have to restart the computer.
Also, sometimes the mac doesn't boot right (you see only a grey display after the apple symbole).
I already repaired the system with Disk Utility and erased it to install a backup of my system.
Thank you for your help!
Best regards....

Keep crashing after iPhoto update,
I have had nothing but trouble sine the latest update I have Iphoto 11. I cannot do my work and it willcrash very soon even without opening iPhoto.
I have done..as below but it has got worse. Desperate now..Thanks george Uk......before it crashes again!
Make a temporary, duplicate copy of your library and apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your HD/User/Home(http://oldtoad.net/Forum/Homemini.png )/ Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your HD/User/Home(http://oldtoad.net/Forum/Homemini.png )/Library /Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #3

Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to theFile ➙ Rebuild Library menu option

Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

OT.got a grey line running from left to right, apple icon and spinning gear......this took some time as I held shift eye down
That what appears as repairs are being made to the HD and system files. Once it's done you're in safe mode. Since it crashed in safe mode the next thing to do is create a second user account, not an administrative account. It's great for testing as it will have none of the add-ons that you have in your primary account.
If iPhoto runs OK there then you account has something that's interfering with it. Post back with the results.
If iPhoto behaves the same in the other account you should reinstall iPhoto. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/ folder,
Then install iPhoto from the disks it came on originally and apply any necessary updaters. -
IPhoto Library 'disappeared' after Yosemite crash and iPhoto upgrade
I have upgraded my iMac to Yosemite and have been using iPhoto fine since then (although it is a bit slow), yesterday iPhoto crashed the computer, after several restarts the computer was ok, but iPhoto wouldn't load and then said it needed to be upgraded - So I did this and when I opened this again it crashed then said that it needed to upgrade the library and then it crashed (iPhoto) when I restarted it started with no library and would appear to have overwritten the iPhoto (default) library, I have checked this and although there are other libraries, I am aware of these and these are not my missing library. I found some information on http://www.scanyourentirelife.com/all-my-pictures-in-iphoto-disappeared-how-to-s afely-get-them-back/ and this talks about looking in the 'Masters' file but to be very careful as altering this will cause problems with edits etc. Anyway I found that in my directory a file called 'Old Masters' as well as 'Masters' and it would appear that all of my pictures are now in 'Old Masters'.
So I am opening the right file but how do I make the 'Old Masters' the 'Masters' - is it as easy as shifting the files or changing the name on the file?
Tech Stuff - My iMac is running 10.10 Yosemite and is about 1 year old 27" version and I keep everything up to date (for my sins) - My library 700+ events and is about 176gb in size
Your help would be appreciatedArmelle,
there is unfortunately not yet any known way to repair an iPhoto Library, that got corrupted during the upgrade by a crash.
You can either restore your iPhoto library from the last backup you made before you tried to upgrade the library, and then try to upgrade again.
Or if your last backup cannot be restored or is too old, copy all photos you can find in the iPhoto Library package and import them into a new iPhoto Library.
but I can see my picture in "old Thumbnails".
The "Old Thumbnails" are only smaller sized versions of your photos. Don't you at least have "Old Originals" or "Old Modified"?

Aperture 3 (retail, not trial) is crashing every time I try to import my 17k iPhoto pictures. I have already tried rebuilding my iphoto library. It tends to crash at random times, sometimes i get 3k pictures, sometimes I get 6k, but it always crashes before it is done. Any suggestions?
I've been able to resolve the issue doing the following crude process.
Details
110GB library
18K+ photos from iphoto 09 -> aperture 3 64-bit referenced masters
macbook pro 4GB ram
Process
1. Disable Faces
Preferences > General
Deselect Enable Faces
2. Show numbers on projects - this is to see the progress and make cleanup easier
Preferences > Appearance
Select show number of versions for projects and albums
3. Begin Importing
File > Import > iphoto Library
Select your iphoto library
- even if you've selected it before and you see it in the folder you must select it. You can tell it's selected when it is highlighted in gray
Select the location you want to move your photos
- to make the import nondestructive, you can only copy the files
Select Do not import duplicates
- I know some boards say that this causes it to fail faster but it works this way. If you don't use this option the import has to work in one try. Using this option you can build on each previous import.
Select the subfolder structure you want
- I use Image year/ image date / project name
Select the file name
- I use the image name
Click import
4. It will fail eventually. When it does, follow step 3 again making sure the don't import duplicates checkbox is checked.
- It took me about 2 days of importing to get this to fully import my library.
5. Cleanup empty folders. You will see that each time you restarted your import it recreated the same project structure. They are indexed by iterations. Now that you selected to show the number of photos in a project when you expand the projects you will see the empty projects. You will also see that in earlier iterations you imported photos for most projects and as you approached your last iteration you imported into fewer projects.
Expand the folders to the project level where you see projects with 0 images
Multiselect all projects with zero photos using command-click or shift-click
Delete all empty projects with command - Delete or right click and select delete items
Empty your trash can by right clicking Empty Aperture Trash
6. Reorganize your photo populated projects so that they work for you.
I share a lot of the same frustrations I've been reading in the posts. It does seem that with the last set of releases of apple products (mobile me last year, aperture 3, ilife last year, snow leopard) that quality is taking a back seat to meeting dates. It is too bad because Apple used to stand for quality first. Although, apple has the lead by far on usability and beauty, the quality is starting to normalize with the industry. Good luck. -
Computer crashes during iPhoto slideshow export
I've been creating several slideshows in iPhoto and then exporting them as Quicktime movies. Some are 6 or 7 minutes, some 14 or 15. When I started doing this, all went well. Then when I had done a few successfully I started experiencing crashes (kernal panics) after 25-50% of the slideshow had been exported. When this first happened I found some large (>6MB) Photoshop files in the slideshow. I made then smaller (< 1 MB) as jpg's and that made the export problem go away.
Now I've made another show that's 13 minutes long and can't get more than 30-40% of it exported before a kernal panic. I've tried logging into another account and doing it and still have the problem. I even booted from another internal drive with the same results. I've repaired permissions and verified the drives in question. Nothing else is running when I export so the whole system is devoted to the process.
Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas for a fix? <br>
Digital Audio 533 G4 with 1.2Ghz processor; 896 MB RAM Mac OS X (10.4.3) all apps at latest revision (QT, iPhoto, etc)Randy:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Do you have any 3rd party addons to the system like APE, Application Enhancer, etc.? Does your iPhoto crash log give any indication of what's conflicting? In my case the offender was usually listed at or near the end of the report.
Also whenever I get a kernel crash I immediately boot into single user mode and run the File System Check, FSCK. Often it will find some damage and repair it. Here's how:
FSCK - File System Check
To start up in single-user mode
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the startup sound, press and hold both the Command (Apple) and "s" keys on your keyboard. The computer will display a series of text messages, at which time you may release these keys.
When the computer has started up, it will display a command line prompt (#). The computer is now in single-user mode.
How to Run the File System Check from the Command Line
Once you have reached a command line, follow these steps to use fsck:
1. At the prompt, type: fsck -fy (NOTE, there is a space between the k and the “-”)
The fsck utility will go through five "phases" and then return information about the disk's utilization and fragmentation. Once the check is finished, if no issue is found, you should see "** The volume <name of volume> appears to be OK."
If fsck alters, repairs, or fixes anything, it will display the message:
**** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***
IMPORTANT: If this message appears, repeat the "fsck -fy" command until this message no longer appears. It is not unusual for your computer to require several "passes" of fsck, because first-pass repairs may uncover additional errors. Run it until you get two consecutive times with an "OK" result.
3. When fsck reports that no problems were found, type: reboot
4. Press Return.
Have you run the usual maintenance operations? Like cleaning out all of the caches and running the cron maintenance scripts. I use OnyX for that. -
Constant Crashing of iPhoto after updating to Mountain Lion and iPhoto 11
I recently updated to Mountain Lion and also to iPhoto 11. iPhoto crashes constantly. From reading other posts I opened while holding the option key and started a new library. It seemed to work then, but now what do I do to get my old photos?
That is a test and it shows that the application is ok. The problem is with your library. Not to data (the library)
So the next thing is to see if we can fix your library. Go back to your main library and post the first 50 lines of the crash log. Also any error message, recent changes, any other observations that might help

I am not sure what is going on. I have kept current with all upgrades and now when I attempt upgrades my system will hang on the white screen, forcing me to turn the machine off and on.
iPhoto has been really buggy (latest version) - keeps telling me that I need to repair my photos. Last night I was working on a photo book and it crashed twice.
Once it rebooted the iMac, the second time while uploading the book it crashed iPhoto.
Since this is past apple care - I am not sure what to do. I am in the US and I can't find any information on pricing for a visit to the genius bar.
The only thing I have going on with this machine is two seperate user accounts that access a shared iPhoto and Music library on the shared portion of the HD.
Thanks for any help.Back up all data, then follow the instructions in the support article linked below:
iPhoto '11: If you see a message that iPhoto can’t access one or more photo files
If you still have problems, try the other options in the "First Aid" dialog. -

Hi can someone help me? iPhoto was causing me issues, always crashing so I updated to OS X and then reinstalled iPhoto but it still crashes. Rebuilt the database too. Here's what it says...

Kernel Crashes on iPhoto Movies
Lately, my MacBook Pro has been crashing with the updates of iPhoto and Mavericks almost continously when selecting movies in iPhoto. It is a kernel crash. Appears to be related to the graphics card. Any help greatly appreciated:

13A603You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It has a defective logic board that may be covered by this recall program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
The model was discontinued in February 2011, so the replacement program will be ending quite soon.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching.

IMovie '08 crashes on iPhoto thumbnail creation (at launch)
ok, I've finally figured out that if I say No to creating thumbnails from iPhoto at launch, iMovie will open okay. But, presuming I want them, any time I launch and say Yes it freezes and than crashes. And I see no way to manually generate them after iMovie opens. Help!
There are several threads in this forum about the iPhoto thumbnail creation bug in iMovie 7.1. The only way around this so far is to put all your iPhoto video clips into the iPhoto trash (but not empty the trash). Then add a few back at a time, launching iMovie after each addition. This "small bites" approach allows iMovie to create the thumbnails without choking/crashing.
Unfortunately, this workaround isn't feasible for those of us with large video collections in our iPhoto library.
