Crashing quark/no boot cd's/no decompression of sitx files

Hello,
Running Dual 867 PPC G4 MDD w/ OS 10.4.11 w/ regular apple software updates
System is used in graphic arts local network... has been stable for 18 months.
Symptoms began several weeks ago... application Quark 6.1 would crash when opening files.
These were normal files that had been regularly accessed for years.
Other than regular apple software updates nothing new has been added to system, and no changes have been made other than normal permissions repair and disk maintenance routines using Cocktail 3.8.3.
After the crashing started I ran all the normal tests/diagnostics/fix attempts including:
Ran Disk Utility - Repair permissions
Log out user, log back in
Log in as different user
Ran Tech Tools Pro 4.0 - all tests passed except surface scan which I did not run.
Reloaded Quark several times.
Reloaded Suitcase Fusion 12.1.2 (font application) several times
Ran font diagnostics - all clean
Reloaded OS from original disks, then reloaded applications (again)
Tried opening Quark only without Suitcase (to eliminate font conflict)
None of these attempts solved the problem... Quark still crashes... Sometimes when launching, sometimes after opening a couple of files, sometimes after opening up to seven files. However, all other applications on machine seem to be running ok.
I have posted this problem to graphic arts forums and most replies seem to center around font conflicts or Quark preferences. However, the test of opening Quark without Suitcase should have eliminated the font issues, and reloading Quark should have eliminated the preference issues. Files will open fine on all other machines on network running same versions of Quark/Suitcase and using same font database, so it seems unlikely that it is a corrupt font.
Two other things have happened since problem began:
A downloaded .sitx file would not open and decompress, and the CD drive will not mount disks.
Not sure what to make of this.
Would welcome any clues.

Update for anyone interested... problem was bad optical (cd) drive. replaced drive, quark crashing problem is gone. keep it in mind for future troubleshooting.

  • Windows 7 crashes seconds after booting up.

Windows 7 is crashing everytime I boot up into it.  I'm on a Mac Pro 2010 (MacPro5,1) with OS 10.7 Lion.  The installation goes fine through Boot Camp Assistant, but after the "Windows Support Software" (Boot Camp drivers), downloaded through the Boot Camp Assistant and burned to a disk, installs and restarts, Windows 7 crashes.  Any ideas?
I've spoken to Apple support twice.  First time the advice was to reinstall everything including the BOOTCAMP partition.  I did that.  Windows 7 runs just fine until the "Windows Software Support" drivers are installed.  The second time I call to Apple support I'm told there is no solution for this.  He said maybe I could just install the drivers manually and not install the ones I don't need and see if that helps.

I think there is some misunderstanding as to what is happening, when, and also why.
Pull all the drives other than the one Windows will be installed to.
To install Windows 7, nothing is needed.
Boot Camp Assistant included, unless you really want to share a drive with Mac OS on it also.
Nothing will get installed until after Windows is installed, and that is when Apple drivers are needed - except in some few cases (USB-DVD, MacBook Air, a trouble booting from a Windows DVD otherwise).
A Mac Pro does not need assistance booting Windows 7. It is as close as can be to a stock PC workstation.
Boot Camp from 10.6 work fine.
There has not been a tech note I've been able to find as to what BC 4.0 offers, maybe able to 'work around" the presence of the Lion Recovery partition - which itself is optional unless using FileVault2, and can be on another disk drive than the primary boot drive.
After Windows is installed is when you need to provide hardware drivers; Apple TimeServices; and others. You still will need ATI and Realtek after that.

3GS Crashed today. Booted a few times by would automatically go into reboot upon use of any app. Now just has the plug into iTunes screen. Retore ran, but did not fix the issue. Still plug into iTunes screen. Any thoughts?.

First thing,I would like to tell you that it is not advisable to downgrade the router's firmware...the router may damage. As you already downgraded the firmware, reset the router and reconfigure the router from scratch...
If you disable the SSID broadcast on the router, the mobile phone will not pickup the hidden wireless signal.
As you were loosing the internet connection, try the following settings on the router...Open the setup page of the router and Under the Wireless tab...Change the Radio Band to Wide-40MHz and change the Wide channel to 9 and Standard Channel to 11-2.462GHz...Click on Advanced Wireless Settings...Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Fragmentation Threshold to 2304 Change the RTS Threshold to 2307 and Click on Save Settings... Also uncheck the option "Filter Anonymous Internet Request" under Security tab...Now,turn off the router for 2 minute and check...

  • IPhone4 constantly freezing & crashing to to boot screen

    Hey folks,
Think I've got a lemon here, but was wondering if anyone else was experiencing simaler issues...
Since I got the phone, it's been freezing up and/or totally crashing to the reboot screen for no apparent reason. First time it happened, I had set an alarm on the clock, alarm went off & I turned the alarm off and put the phone down. Went back to it 10 min. later and phone was completely shut off. (And yes, I'm positive I did not turn it off, and no one else touched it, lol.)
A few hours later, I tried to send a simple txt msg, iPhone crashed to boot screen again. Rebooted phone, everything was fine again for awhile, tried the txt again, and it went through ok.
After that, I'd be using random apps on the phone for awhile, and it would freeze up or completely crash and shut off, and automatically launch the Apple logo boot screen. Sometimes the little spinning icon thing would appear over the Apple logo and just freeze up again. I'd have to hold down the home & wake buttons to force it to reboot again. Sometimes that would take 2-3 tried before the phone would fully boot up. So I did a restore from scratch and everything seemed to work ok for a few hours...
Then it started again - just random freezes and crashes to the boot screen w/ Apple logo. I thought maybe a particular app may be causing problems, but cannot trace to any one specific app... happens at random, in many different apps. I also tried killing everything in the multitasking "drawer", but still have problems.
On Saturday afternoon, problems started again with the crashing, so I restored again for a 2nd time... didn't load any 3rd party apps, just the Apple stock ones. Used the phone for a few hours and crashing started again, for no apparent reason. As it stands now, when I try to launch the App Store or iTunes apps, they start to launch for a second, then automatically quit and close.... what the??
So what do you think it is? Just a defective phone?
Like I said, I've restored it twice now, set up as "new phone" each time, etc. Problems happening both with 3rd party apps installed, and also on a fresh restore with only stock apps. Blows my mind.... otherwise, phone is perfect - no screen or antenna issues.
I've made an appt at the Genius bar for Sunday, I'm hoping they just replace the phone and don't ask me to restore it again... Hope that they even have some replacements left!

Yeah, I thought it was iOS4 at first too, or a rogue app that was causing the problems, because it kind of made sense, right? But I also installed iOS4 on my 3GS and there have been no problems at all with it.
I went to see the Genius Bar, the tech looked it over, and after I explained the problems, he let me exchange it for a new one, absolutely no hassles at all. The tech didn't seem too shocked at all when I told him the problems I'd been having, it was quickly determined that the phone was indeed defective. He hooked it up to a Macbook and ran some kind of diagnostics program on it so the results could be sent to the engineers. Asked me if I would mind if they called me to further describe the issues, I told him no problem at all.
Funny thing is, when they gave me the new iphone and took it out of the box, it had a deep nick in the center top of the metal band. I pointed it out and they gave me yet another iphone right there on the spot.
So the new phone I have now seems to be ok... been using it for about 11 hours with no problems at all, I'm syncing it for the first time in iTunes as I'm writing this and it seems to be going ok.

  • InDesign crashes every time you double click to open an .indd file on Windows system

InDesign crashes every single time you double click to open an InDesign file and has done so since replacement of the original version of InDesign introduced in the Creative Cloud launch.  Does anyone else have this problem?  I'd say it was unique to my system if I hadn't experienced the issue repeatedly on several different systems now.  You have to relaunch InDesign which then opens the file from recovery, so it saw the file you tried to launch in the first place.  This leads me to believe the problem lies with the file association registry of InDesign inside Windows systems.  I find it unbelievable that this problem still exists and remains unreported and that a solution hasn't been implemented by Adobe to rectify the issue.
The double click is a fundamental tenant of opening files on a Windows system in the same way a single click is on a Mac.  Does InDesign crash ever time a Mac user clicks to open their files, I think not.
Anyone got any ideas other than the obvious which is Adobe actually got their figure out and fixed it.
    Cheers,
    Pat Doyle

    Hi Michael,
I'll give it a go.  Don't really like messing with the registry on Windows boxes.  Yes you can do it, but it can end up being a case of the operation was a success, but the patient died.
Just was rather hoping someone else had already experienced this problem and posted the registry tweak.  Didn't want spend hours reinventing the wheel.  Not because I'm lazy, but I have so many demands on my time that resolving a minor issue that effects me only seems like it should be pretty low priority.
The system I'm using is brand new, but the problem seems to have followed me regardless which may indicate that it is seated in my synchronization information somehow.  Really don't know how that could happen as I'm not an Adobe engineer or have the remotest idea where to even start looking.  So I think I'll mark your suggestion as the "Answer" and just learn to live with it.
Windows eh! Can't live with - can't live without it.  I'm sure Mac can be just as temperamental. Just have to chalk this one up as being just another ghost in the machine.
Thanks for all the advice you have kindly offered, much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Pat Doyle

Will installing Boot Camp drivers allow me to both read and write to the OS X Volume from windows?
This is important as if it will it means i can make the windows partition a lot smaller and keep all my files on the OS X partition which would be preferable.
    Jon
No, OSX will be read only (from Windows) and vice versa. (you can install 3rd party utilities on either or both partitions, to make read/write possible)

MS word keeps crashing on my macbook air. it tries to recover all files when I try to open it then immediately crashes or freezes. It's ms word 2011 and I'm running OS X 10.7.5

I am having the same problem. When I save a document in word, particularly with track changes and comments, it freezes and crashes. I fould this forum as I was reading help posted in a previous forum and the "helping" comments were saying this must be a problem on the user end - but that can't be right as so many people are posting this problem. Its clearly an incompatibility between the software from two competing companies. Figure it out Apple!

  • Various application crashes after safe boot

On start up of Mac OS 10.6.2, safe boot was initiated automatically. (Possible system crash during previous run?) Since this point I have restarted in normal mode. Now all applications that were not already running during previous normal session quit on start up, (icon gets as far as jumping stage, but no further). Time Machine opens, but quits when attempted restore is chosen. Most applications run OK in safe mode. Have already reset PRAM but no change. Unable to open Crash report as well to post on here. Any ideas? Thanks.

Thanks Neville, have tried that. Carried out necessary repair which was successful. Re-ran repair and message confirmed no further repair needed. Restarted in normal mode but still have same problem. The only programs working are Mail, Safari, itunes, and Finder. These are the ones that were running before problem. Tested crash report no difference. Re-ran Time Machine but now 'restore' button is shaded out, whereas previously able to select and only crashed when tried to replace desktop files to previous point.

  • Re: Satellite A210-10A, crashes when changing boot order

    Hello,
I have a serious problem with my Toshiba laptop, Windows Vista 32bit, 1.8Ghz, 2Gb RAM, AMD Turion 64 x2
There is one hard disk partitioned as two 75Gb drives (C and E).
The problem is that, whenever I enter the Boot menu (to boot from CD), or if I change within the BIOS the boot order and then restart, the computer crashes (power cuts off suddenly).
Then the only way to recover, is to plug out the AC/DC adapter, wait 5 min, and start again. Then, either everything goes on normally, or Windows system recovery launches, after what it will reboot and work fine.
It might be important to know that I repartitioned the E drive to have 30Gb for installing Win7 later on. The annoying thing is that I never tried changing the boot order before repartitioning, so I don't know whether it has something to do with the problem or if it was there before.
Any help or suggestion would be appreciated.
    Thank you,

It looks like the Bios related issue. Have you tried to update it or reflash?

Maybe this took place before but you didn't check.

  • Crash Won't boot or mount

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard. I was browsing in Firefox and typing up a comment for a Wordpress blog when it started to beachball. The system become unresponsive. Couldn't launch anything. Waited it out. Tried opening Activity Monitor from the Dock. Again, just unresponsive. Most recent thing I did was install a firmware update to a Linksys router via this machine.
I forced a shutdown. Booted back up and tried to go into Single User Mode. That worked, but when I tried an fsck, it said it could not mount the drive.
Booted off the CD. Ran Disk Utility. The disk shows up, but the named disk is greyed out. Only the #'d 250GB name shows. A repair of either one reports no errors. I cannot mount the disk inside Disk Utility, even after a repair.
The OS X installation doesn't show that disk as an option, so I can't do a clean install. I can't select it as a startup disk.
Disk Utility on a second Mac (attempting Target Disk Mode over Firewire) gave me the same kind of picture, except multiple instances of this drive started showing up in the Disk Utility sidebar.
Did a PRAM zap. Didn't loosen anything up.
    Thoughts?

It has been a while since this happened, so I don't remember exactly what I did. I do know that I resorted to a reformat and a reinstall. Here I am in December and I'm doing just fine. I was able to back up my data from the mounted drive using DiskWarrior.
I usually back up often, so when that happened, I had to do some of the more recent large projects I had been working on. I wish someone had responded to my question too. I have no idea what caused the crash in the first place. Very odd.
I had to use what I knew to get back up and running. In the past, DiskWarrior has always been very useful. It doesn't fix everything, but in a pinch, you can at least get something going like I did.

  • System Crash after updating Boot Camp beta 1.3 to 1.4

After dowloading the latest BootCamp version 1.4, I double clicked on the icon and the Installation started. I have an option to upgrade the BootCamp currently installed in my system which is version 1.3. And so I clicked on the "Upgrade" button, I waited for about five minutes but then nothing happened. So clicked on the "Go Back" button and just cancelled the installation. I restarted the system and then the screen just went black and the BSD something prompt appeared. I restarted several times but the same Black screen with the BSD prompt happened. I called up support and was able to recover my system after reinstalling the entire OS. The support guy told me they already got several calls with the same system crash problem after updating the BootCamp. Just wondering what just happened?

I just bought the new Mac OS Leopard, it already comes with built-in Boot Camp.

  • Kernel crashing during first boot on VirtualBox

I'm trying to get install Arch Linux on VM running on my Windows 7, I set up the machine and everything else that was in the guide on wiki, but during first boot, I get kernel error and machine freezes.
    This is screenshot of error:

I'm new to Linux so I might have missed something obvious, don't be too harsh on me please
-- mod edit: read the Forum Etiquette and only post thumbnails http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/For … s_and_Code [jwr] --

Mhm, I only have to suggestions (I am not a kernel-pro though):
Enable PAE/NX at the "System -> Processor" tab in the vbox configuration
If that does not work disable it and try to reconfigure the vm with minimal settings in virtualbox. For example, disable audio, networking, usb, 3d etc... and see wether your machine crashes or not.

  • IPad keeps on crashing and re-booting

Since yesterday afternoon, my iPad (16Gb, wifi) crashes after every 2-3 minutes of use.
The Apple logo appears, followed by the passcode screen.
Reset ("Erase all content and settings") did not help, it keeps on crashing; even when charging using the wall-outlet (very slowly I noticed, still at 31% for almost an hour) it keeps on re-booting every 2-3 minutes.
I have used it in the morning to check my mail before going to work yesterday. I didn't notice anything special, I did not install any new apps. I left it on the table and went to work.
When returning in the evening I started to use it like I have been doing since I received it two weeks ago. But after two or three minutes, the Apple logo appeared and I had to log-on again.
But now it keeps on re-booting all the time!
Does anyone have a suggestion how to resolve this?
I understand the new OS will not be coming to the iPad until Fall and I do not want to install some kind of jailbreak or anything...
    Could it be hardware-related?

After making an appointment and waiting over a week I was a few minutes late for my appointment I was told by apple I would have to make a new appointment. The shop was Chatswood in Sydney and the manager Mathew was very pathetic. I travelled 1 hour each way and was treated very poorly I must comment and say this was my first Apple devices and I will never understand how come people are buying these devices. The apps seem really good if only the hardware and the support could match. I really wish this manager all his best to Matthew in his next position somewhere else he obviously should not be in the position of managing an Apple store.
