Crawly artifacts in footage fixes?

I have some older footage shot on tape in SD on a green screen. I'm not sure of the process of how the vendor got it from tape to digital, but they told me it was the highest quality footage they had. When I pull it into Ae, it's got alot of crawly artifacts on his suit and hair, as seen here:
Actually the compression that adobe put on the image you can hardly see them in this image, but believe me they are there. What can you do with that? I've tried curves, to crush the blacks a little, and that helps, but is there a better solution?

What I see is typical interlacing artifacts from tape captured by a video card. I also see what could be DV color compression artifacts. They can be fixed in a number of ways. The first thing to check is interlacing.
First, make sure that the video is interlaced and that the fields are properly separated. The easiest way to do this is to drop the footage in the new composition icon at the bottom of the project panel or select the footage in the project panel and select Create New Comp from selection.
Open up the interpret footage panel and set separate fields. if the footage is NTSC and 480 pixels high it's likely lower field first. If it's PAL it's likely upper field first. AE may have already made an educated guess.
With the composition open open up the composition settings and double the frame rate by selecting it, moving the cursor to the right and typing in *2.
Now step through the comp one frame at a time and check movement of the edges. There should be two distinct frames all moving in the right direction. You can use the page up or page down keys or Cmnd/Ctrl + Right or Left arrow keys.
If there are two distinct frames and the footage is moving in the right direction then the fields are properly separated. If the action goes back and forth, one frame to the right and the next to the left then the fields are separated in the wrong order. If you have 2 duplicates and then 3 or 2 duplicates and 1 in any kind of pattern then the footage has had 3:2 pulldown introduced. You'll have to remove that. Let me know if you think there's 3:2 pulldown. If there is, then I'll help you fix that.
Here's the worst case scenario, duplicate pairs of frames. This means that someone took interlaced footage, didn't properly separate fields, then rendered the footage as progressive. If that is the case then you'll have to figure out how to minimize the effects in other ways.
Now let's deal with the color artifacts from DV 4:2:0 color compression. What happens is that the luminance data in a DV signal is sampled a pixel for a pixel, but the color sampling gives you 4 pixels for every color value. There are some plug-ins that can help remove these artifacts. You can do it yourself by duplicating the footage adding some blur, changing the blend mode of the top copy to blur or overlay, adjusting the levels of the blured copy, pulling your key from a pre-comp if the two layers, and then using that key with some matte choking as a track matte for the original footage.
Here's a thread on DV artifacts. I talk about some of the solutions.
Try looking at your footage at 800%. I think you'll see the artifacts are in 4 pixel blocks.

  • CS6 Project - Hang on start up - Move Footage Fixed ?

    Hello,
I have tried searching for an answer to this one, but difficult to find an answer. It's a tricky one I think.
I have three projects with CS6. This problem, which is very worrying, is happening with two of them.
System has had no changes. WIn 7 64 BIt, 16 GIG Ram. Tons of storage on video and system drives.
Project complete and edited. Once I reload project. Its hangs. Just sit there and crash. The project consist of a three camera edit.
If I move rename the source Camera 1 video files to a new name, reload project, CS6 ask for ne wlocation. I point to the renamed folder. The project opens find.
This is a temp fix, I'm pretty scared that one day the project wont open! :-(
I'm pretty sure all all to do with the Media Cache folder.
Recently I moved this to a different drive, as i thought it would help with CS6 Multi-Cam editing performance (it didn't).
Thank you in advance for any help offered :-)

    Hi
Is the version of premiere pro updated?
Also we need to check if there is any latest graphics card driver available for graphics card in the computer.
Once launched , then we can use the project archiver to export the project to a different location.
Seems like a corrupt sequence or so, Can be also fixed by nested sequence to save this project.
    Hope it Helps

  • Firefox showing artifacts, how to fix it?

Almost always when I use firefox it shows pink squares with a text-like shape, it also happens when I open .pdf files.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

  • CS 5 OnLocation not any faster with HDV than CS3?

I've been using CS3's OnLocation for dozens on on-site shoots for several years now and regularly sings it praises wherever I travel.  I've used an older 2.1 Ghz single processor Dell laptop, and more recently been using a Quad-core I-5 Toshiba.  My primary camera is a Canon XHA1s; among others, I also use a Sony FX7 and Z5U.
Recently I've been increasingly shooting HDV to tape with a desire to capture same to my laptop using OnLocation with its field monitor.  After initial testing showed ongoing artifacts in my video stream (both recorded and on-screen), I changed to an external SIIG Firewire card which completely resolved those problems for artifact-free footage.
One problem which remained, however, is unacceptable field monitor performance using OnLocation with HDV.  With full frame-rate features enabled, I was getting as much as a 10-second lag time! (yes.. 10 SECONDS).  When I cut back which frames are being displayed (OnLocation settings), the lag goes down somewhere between .5 and 1 second (still pretty bad IMO), and is pretty stuttery.
I was hoping that CS5's OnLocation would be more optimized for HDV and perform better, and installed a friend's version of CS5 OnLocation to test this out.  Sadly, not only did it perform *NO BETTER*, but after some period of capturing (10 minutes one time, an hour another time.. did not seem consistent) the laptop's screen would go blank (not off) and the computer remained unresponsive (required a hard boot).  After this repeated several times, I tried using CS3's OnLocation again, but it too was experiencing the "blank screen then lock the laptop" problem -- although I haven't tested it, I do hope that uninstalling CS5's OnLocation and re-installing CS3's will remove the offending DLL or Codec and avoid future "lock-up" problems.
My question here is -- is the lag and stuttery (like a low frame rate or shutter speed) field monitor the expected behaviors with OnLocation and HDV?  Yeah yeah.. I've read excuses that "HDV requires more processing" but I've captured and previewed full framerate HDV using Sony Vegas's capture while simultaneously capturing a DV stream using the same software, and had no issues at all while experiencing fluid previews.
Any thoughts on what's going on?  If I knew CS5 would fix the problem and/or was more optimized, I'd happily pay for the upgraded Master Collection, but my experience has not proven so well
    Help?!
    :-/ Rob

heres a test. try importing a single 42gb timeline of 1080p into encore cs5, and now do the same thing for cs6. rendering may or may not be faster for menus, but you can get right to work on your project in cs6, while it processes in the background, vs cs5 having to stare at the yellow status bar for 90 minutes (it seemed, lol)

  • Keylight, random Horizontal lines

In After effects using Keylight, I have an issue with Horizontal lines appearing out of nowhere, appearing behind the subject in one frame of the video. I've tried getting rid of it by changing a setting in keylight, but the lines appear somewhere else in the video.  I've tried restarting, uninstalling/reinstalling, but to no avail. I have the image below. We shot on an Sony Ex3 1080p/24. The project setting is 1080p/23.976 in premiere & After Effects. I'm running version CS6

I can see that it's an MP4 from the screenshot, but I was just wondering what the actual codec was. I'm assuming an H.264 variant.
What happens if you try to transcode the clip to a production codec?
I don't think the 11.0.4 update fixed issues with block artifacts in footage, but it is usually a good idea to be running with the latest bug fixes.

  • How do I undo BC Partition repair in disk utility?

    Here's the summary:
8-core MacPro2,1 running 10.6.8, Paragon NTFS for Mac, Bootcamp Win7.
4 internal HDD drives: two 1.5TBs for data, one 1TB for MacOS, one 1.5TB for Win7 bootcamp.
I mostly use the Mac side for music production (but rarely), and the Win side for business and everything else. Scores and scores of Win apps installed over the years. [4 monitor system], well over 500K files on the drive.
I just backed up the data from the two data-only drives, and made a bootable clone of the MacOS drive (SuperDuper). I have never successfully been able to clone the Win7 Bootcamp NTFS drive (even with Winclone back in 2009) because of volume sizes (or something). I decided to try again, from WITHIN Windows this time (all other attempts were from the Mac OS side).
I bought, downloaded, and installed Acronis True image from within the Win7 bootcamp system. [I obviously did not know that it was gonna modify my MBR, and I had no idea at the time that the GPT and MBR areas were somehow 'mingled' on a bootcamp drive.]
So, when I performed the Acronis-requested reboot (my default boot is into the Bootcamp/Win7 drive), it failed to boot and requested some Windows recovery media or something. I was concerned that anything i put in the DVD drive would sabotage my priceless (in retrospect) stable/optimized Win7 bootcamp system. So, i just hard-powered down the Mac and tried to restart.
I did the Alt/option key, and i was presented with the Mac or Win drive icons. I selected Win, and then I got a different boot error message--'no MBR found'.
But this time i realized that Acronis had stepped where it shouldn't have, and I figured the Mac side could fix the boot problem (maybe with bootcamp assistant or something).
If i had stopped THERE, and searched the forums i could have found how to fix THAT problem--that has been answered tons of times…
But, instead, i went to Disk Utility and asked it to repair my Bootcamp partition (I have Paragon NTFS and it has worked for years, and so I did not have a reason to doubt Disk Utility's ability to Repair an NTFS volume--not that i have tried it before, of course).
Disk Utility repair ran for about 10-15 minutes and said it fixed about 10-20 things.
The drive information (in the side bar and below) still had the BOOTCAMP partition, reported that it was NTFS, said that there was 308 GB still available of the 1.5TB drive, and that it contained 1.19TB 'used'. Looked normal to me.
I closed Disk Utility and then opened a Finder window to see if DU left any 'artifacts' of its 'fixes' on the BOOTCAMP partition, and all the files were gone! Even though DU said it had 1.19TB 'used', all of my files are gone. [I rebooted also, to verify that it was not some 'delayed reporting' issue.]
When I enable 'hidden files' to show, what I get on the Bootcamp partition are these three entries:
.DS_Store (16KB), .fseventsd folder (with a 1KB UUID file inside it), and a .Trashes folder with zero KB.
At this point, I panic and assume the position of despair. There is no 'undo' key for the D/U that I can find. I do an orderly shut down of the system, physically remove the Win7 BC drive, and make/verify a sector-by-sector clone of the drive (on a Win7 laptop, using Acronis--22 hours).
In Win7 Disk Management, the GPT partition (on the original drive) shows up and the BOOTCAMP partition shows up--with the proper size--but windows does NOT recognize the partition as being NTFS. It reports it as being RAW and 'urges' me to format it (yeah, right…).
So, I place the sector-by-sector duplicate back into the Mac, boot up (only the Mac OS is given as an option), and am ready to 'work on' recovering the Win7 BC partition (if possible).
I am avoiding trying to fix the booting problem, because recovery of the 1.2TB of a working system is much more critical for me.
The clone HDD reports the same in DU, except now the GPT partition shows up as greyed-out 'disk1s1', right above the "BOOTCAMP" partition in the sidebar. [I understand from researching this that disk1s1 is somehow related to the bootloader for BC?]
I used the demo version of Data Rescue 3 to scan for recoverable files from the drive, but it doesn't even report the .files. (I am running the deep scan now, but will take about another 9 hours to complete that).
Has anybody got any suggestions on how to reclaim this partition and its system?

  • Minidv - the strangest thing I've ever seen

I started a thread last week asking if minidv was dead. I asked this because it appeared that my Panasonic minidv camera was broken and I wondered if I should make the move to a different format. Bottom line: There was no need to leave minidv at this point in time . . .just get another minidv camera and I'd be fine for the foreseeable future.
As a continuation of that discussion, I have encountered the strangest thing I've ever seen and I'm wondering if anybody can provide insight. I'll try to make a complicated story as concise as possible.
The reason I thought my Panasonic camera was in need of repairs was because large blue streak suddenly appeared across the screen when I played back or recorded video. This was not a problem with the tape, because I checked a few different tapes. In addition, these blue streaks showed up on previously recorded footage that looked perfectly fine when I dumped it to FCP a while ago.
So I bought a used Canon on eBay as a replacement. When I inserted a couple of tapes into the Canon, I saw gray streaks in the same manner I had seen blue streaks on the Panasonic. As far as I could tell, this meant one of two things: 1) there WAS a problem with the footage on the tapes, or, 2) both cameras were malfunctioning in a similar matter.
After an hour of going back and forth trying to isolate the problem, I decided to record some new footage on the Canon. When I did this, there were no gray streaks on playback of the new footage. Out of curiosity, I went back and looked at the previous footage that appeared to have gray streaks, and now the gray streaks were gone.
Wondering if some kind of miracle had happened, I took the tape out of the Canon and inserted it into the Panasonic. Still the same blue streaks on the Panasonic. Since recording a few seconds of new footage on the Canon seemed to be a miracle cure, I decided to try the same thing on the Panasonic. Voila! Blue streaks are gone. I tested other tapes . . .all blue streaks gone from the Panasonic and all gray streaks gone from the Canon.
If recording new footage on the Panasonic somehow magically realigned the heads or something, that should have fixed it last week when this problem first arose on my Panasonic. I tried all these same tests on the Panasonic and the blue streaks wouldn't go away on both newly recorded footage and previously recorded footage.
How is it possible that both of these cameras were working incorrectly in the same manner with several different tapes and then, simply by recording several seconds of new footage, they were miraculously healed? This is bizarre!!!
The only thing I did differently in all this troubleshooting was eat a banana. After that, things were fine. I say that half jokingly, but that is literally what I did. I took a break and at a banana, then 5 minutes later I tried exactly the same things and the cameras worked.
I guess I should be happy that both cameras are working now, but since I have no clue what the common denominator was that caused them to malfunction, and I have no clue how they both healed themselves, I'm worried about using them when I'm trying to record important footage.
Any serious thoughts about how this miracle has happened? (Yes, I know that user error is usually the next thing to consider, but I took very methodical steps to isolate the problem, so I really think the odds of that being the cause are very slim.)

Sounds like dirty heads to me....
I had a similar problem a few years ago. Weird streaks started showing up in my footage, so I used my friend's camera to figure out if it was a problem with the tape or my camera. I ended up transferring dirt from my camera to my friend's with the tape I was using. The footage was ruined, but I ran a head cleaning tape through both cameras and never had the problem since, although I haven't used MiniDV in a few years now.
Sounds like you did the same thing as me....meaning you're right twice: 1) the tapes had dirt on them, and 2) both cameras were having the same problem because the tape was dirty
it seems weird that recording new footage fixed the problem, but its possible that it cleaned the dirt of the heads (temporarily). I'd say buy a couple head cleaning tapes and you'll be fine....and maybe try eating more bananas

  • Secondary colur correction mask not working! Help!

I am currently working on Premier Pro CS6 editing a music video. I have edited my footage, fixed the tonality and I am now onto color grading it. I took the saturation down to take out the colour and applied RGB curves to add blue into the shadows and then another fast colour corrector to give the video a blue/black depressed feel.
Going through my footage I wanted to take out certain colours that were too vibrant still. So I thought to make a mask. This is where my problem starts. I open up the three way colour corrector and the RGB curves and go down to secondary color correction and go to mask. When I try to take a sample from the dropper Premier doesn’t pick up the colour from where I want but selects it in other areas of the footage but never on the area I want! I have tried this on my mac book pro and the same is happening. When I have tried it on rushes it seems to work. I don’t understand why it doesn’t work when I have colour graded my footage?! I have tried many different discussions but nothing is pointing me forward. If anyone has any idea of why this is happening and how to solve my problem I would be so thankful!

    Hi ACD,
After Effects and Photoshop CS6 take .Looks via the LUT engine. That indeed allows for using primaries with low mid high differentiation and should yield really good results.
Secondaries can be expressed in a LUT as well, but I would typically not recommend using them when you want to integrate .Looks with your After Effects workflow. Here's why:
    - a LUT is never as precise as you'd want it to be for something as complex as secondary color grading - a LUT is always based on interpolation (as opposed to applying the effect in SpeedGrade - there it's all native, no interpolation at all)
    - For a good key you would typically use the denoise and the blur function in the secondaries. Both (by nature) don't translate at all into a LUT, so you'd have to give up using these 2 important tools
    - For a lot of work you'd want the LUT to be accompanied by a mask. That's something that also can't be described in a LUT.
Think of the LUT support for .Looks you created in SpeedGrade more as a really helpful tool for matching your comps to an overall look you design, not necessarily as the tool to apply a final grade.
    Hope this is helpful.

  • Video Clip Speech Mux Pain in Logic Pro :(

    Hey there,
ok, since the last entry on Normalization dates back to 2006 (at least the one I found), I would like to throw this one out there.
I have a conference with different volume levels (voices at different distances from the mic) that needs to be muxed to a (post-prod) slide presentation in Final Cut X.
    My questions are:
    - how can I quickly normalize the audio track (all voices) to about the same levels without losing all of my hair?
    - how can I speed up / slow down speech for a slide without affecting pitch?
    - how can I do this in the most effective workflow between Logic Pro and Final Cut X?
    - do I need any other software that can speed this up?
    All help is much appreciated,
    videonoob

Thanks for the swift answer, kc.
The problem is that I don't have a continuous audio track, but need to cut it into pieces using logic. These pieces will then be used for the video presentation, so we know that sync-ing will be a paaain.
"Do your thing in Logic, bounce the results of your work to HD and import the audio into your FCX project."
Believe it, or not: I've been using Logic since 1998 (yeah, Emagic days FTW) and I STILL have to stumble upon a A/V tutorial that is specifically geared towards "doing my thing", aka knowing how to tweak the plugins correctly. I guess that's why Apple just introduced the presets: because of people like me.
    So, to reiterate:
    - demux audio from video from original footage
    - fix audio (normalize, tweak, cut)
    In the meantime:
    - export slide presentation to .mov
    - arrange bits and pieces in Final Cut Pro X
    - sync bits and pieces of audio to it
    - render and pray
Did I forget something? Any plugs that can help make my life less miserable in any of the steps?

  • Removing sound on iMovie

I've had my Macbook Pro for a while now and i paticulary enjoy using iMovie. The issue is that when i make my movie and put the music on to match tge video clips, i can steal hear the sound of the video clips in the background of the music. I have tried to mute the clips but the problem still lies. Is there anything that i can do?
    Thanks.

Are you using iMovie 09 (Version 8.06)?
If so, are you using any speed changes? Fast or slow motion? If so, there is a bug when you use a custom speed change like 58% or 139% that will cause random audio artifacts.
The fix is to change all speed changes within your project to one of the pre-sets such as 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, 200%, 400%, ETC.

  • White border on cut out

I meticulously cut up a person by using the eraser tool but when I move her to a neutral gray background there is a white border around the cut out so it obviously looks pasted. Any suggestions?

    John:
There are many ways to go about fixing her. The first would be to stop using the eraser tool in the future. Particularly for this application. Instead, learn to use a layer mask. You can then live preview your cutout on any background, including the one you intend to use. A typical approach is to test white, black and gray to quickly spot any artifacts.
To fix her, you can select the transparency of your lady by holding ctr and clicking on her layer icon in the layers palette (or load selection... woman layer transparency). You should now see the marching ants around her. Make sure your woman is the active layer, and then create a layer mask by hitting the mask icon at the bottom of the layers palette (the white circle in the gray box). Your selection should have disappeared and been replaced by a mask (black and white icon linked to your woman in the layers palette). Now, go to filter... other... minimize, and play with the value (probably 1 or 2) to see if this works.

  • My 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

My 2006 - 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV 1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. However, when I open the project on my other Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and FCP 6, the footage works fine as it does on my newer Imac running Mavericks and FCP 7. I have tried a Quicktime update on the Mac Pro that the footage doesn't work on but it says that I already have the newest version of Quicktime installed. I have also tried reinstalling the Final Cut Pro Studio twice, still no fix. I'm completely out of solutions and need to be able to edit HDV footage on this machine. Any help would be great. Thanks.

there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up.  Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests.  But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum.  there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc.

  • How do you fix the audio from drifting sync on DV footage?

I know there has been some discussion about this, but the solution doesn't really make sense.  Basically, I am having a huge problem with audio sync on anything shot on MiniDV.   Sometimes the footage will pop at the beginning and the footage will immediately be off sync --- sometimes it takes halfway through the tape to start drifting.  We work with pro-level camcorders and recording decks, and basically the only solution I can find it use legacy FCP or iMovie to capture the footage.  Which is not a solution.  I've also tried the re-time fix, which *sometimes* works ------ but only sometimes.   Is this being addressed in any way?

Did you load the Presenter presentation in a Share pod or are you using screen sharing?

  • Flicker footage in Premiere Pro CC 2014.2. Tested on different computers. When waiting for fixes this bug?

Flicker appears solely the fault of Premiere Pro CC 2014.2. Tested on different computers. Used as nVidia Quadro and GeForce GTX770. Drivers were different. Everywhere equally evident flicker. Incidentally, it defies logic and may occur at different film pieces. If re-render that flicker may occur on another spot in the video.
It can occur even in the parts without filters !!! But no all time.

    Hi Aleksey,
Flicker appears solely the fault of Premiere Pro CC 2014.2. Tested on different computers. Used as nVidia Quadro and GeForce GTX770. Drivers were different.
Have you tried with the Mercury Playback Engine set to "Software Only?" More info please: FAQ: What information should I provide when asking a question on this forum?
Everywhere equally evident flicker. Incidentally, it defies logic and may occur at different film pieces. If re-render that flicker may occur on another spot in the video.
Is this a brand new project or one you updated from an earlier version? What kind of footage are you exporting? Which preset are you using?
When waiting for fixes this bug?
If I can repeat the case here with the same hardware, GPU, and drivers, that would be easier to fix the bug. Currently, I cannot recreate the bug.  If you or anyone else can provide me with steps to recreate the bug, that would help immensely. It sounds like this will be the difficult thing.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • My iPad is logged into my iCloud account, but my wife's iTunes. I have uploaded video footage from my iPhone to my iCloud. It appears on the iPad but is not accessible in iMovie? What's the fix?

My iPad is logged into my iCloud account, but my wife's iTunes. I have uploaded video footage from my iPhone to my iCloud. It appears on the iPad but is not accessible in iMovie? What's the fix?

You shouldn't have to change your iTunes account to not have to purchase it twice.  If your devices are using different iTunes IDs, just purchase it on one device, then import it to your iTunes library by connecting the device to your computer, opening iTunes and going to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.  Once in iTunes, you should be able to sync it to your other device (assuming both devices are syncing with the same iTunes library).  (And even if they were syncing with separate libraries, you could use Home Sharing to copy the app from one library to the other.)
    Or, am I missunderstanding something?
